T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Additional Join Causing Duplicates?

Mar 9, 2015

I have this statement:

SELECT top 100 P.LastName ,
P.FirstName,
P.MiddleName,
P.PractitionerTypeID,
P.SuffixID,
A.Linenumber1,
A.LineNumber2,
Z.City,

[code]....

Seems like no matter which join type I choose i still get duplicates.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Rank Duplicates But Only Rows Involved In Duplicates?

Oct 22, 2014

I have a table with 22 million Business records. I can see that there are duplicates when I group by BusinessName and Address and Phone. I'd like to place only the duplicates into a table, with a ranking, oldest business key gets a ranking of 1.

As a bonus I'd like each group to have a distinct group name (although not necessary, just want to know how to do this)

Later after I run more verifications to make sure these are not referenced elsewhere I'll delete everything with a matchRank > 1 out of the main Business table.

DROP TABLE [dbo].[TestBusiness];
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestBusiness](
[Business_pk] INT IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[BusinessName] VARCHAR (200) NOT NULL,
[Address] VARCHAR(MAX) NOT NULL,

Table Joins Causing Duplicates?

May 15, 2015

I have a table with call data (ContactID, Queues Entered, Call Status, Date & Time Stamps etc). Each entry relating to a contact ID goes onto a new row. The first row for a contact is the date and time it is created. It then captures the queue (or queues) it enters before it is answered. Finally, it captures when the call is released (Completed).

I'm trying to link all this data into one single row per contact ID to make it easier to report on.

I started off by using DISTINCT to pull back all of the Contact ID's. I then used a Left Join to pull back the date and time of creation. I created a further Left Join to pull back the first queue that it entered and so on.

When I did this, I started getting duplicates. This is because some calls enter more than one queue.

How can I do this so that it only has one ContactID per row. Also, for the Queue, is there anything I can do to ensure it pulls back the first Queue it enters? (These are time stamped). Subsequently, I would then need to add the second and third queue it enters in other columns. (A call can enter a maximum of 3 queues).

Additional Criteria In LEFT JOIN

Jan 18, 2008

I have a stored procedure which is used to search records in the database based on the data sent from the web page. There are several search fields and all of them are in one table (Table1) except the "CallerName" field which is in a different table (Table2). Since I had to show CallerName also in the gridview apart from other columns, I did a LEFT JOIN (using field CallerNumber) to show all the required fields from Table1 and CallerName from Table2.
Now heres the problem. Since CallerName is a search criteria, its supposed to be in the WHERE clause after the JOIN or in the JOIN clause itself. The problem is, if I put it in WHERE clause, the result set doesn't show records from Table1 which do not have a matching CallerNumber in Table2. SELECT T1.CallerNumber, T1.DateCalled, T2.CallerName
FROM Table1 T1
LEFT JOIN Table2 T2 on
T1.CallerNumber = T2.CallerNumber
WHERE T1.CallerNumber = 'some number' AND T2.CallerName = 'some name' If I put it in the JOIN condition, it works just like a LEFT JOIN is supposed to work, showing all the records in Table1 and also those which had CallerName in Table2. SELECT T1.CallerNumber, T1.DateCalled, T2.CallerName
FROM Table1 T1
LEFT JOIN Table2 T2 on
T1.CallerNumber = T2.CallerNumber AND T2.CallerName = 'some name'
WHERE T1.CallerNumber = 'some number'

1st SQL won't work for me because it doesn't show all the records in Table1, even when no search criteria is specified.2nd SQL won't work for me because it shows more than required when just CallerName is sent from the web page as search criteria. It will show all the records where CallerName is "some name" and also all the additional records (since it is a left join).
Can I get the goodness of both in one or do I have to create two separate Stored Procedures?
Thanks all,Bullpit

Self-Join Duplicates - Help!

Oct 22, 2004

Can some kind person out there please help me, I've been stuck on this for daaaa-y-s.

I have a database that allows users to search for pdf's of technical drawings.

Basically I have one huge table with multiple columns, which the user can only search on any combination of one of these two columns
"drawing_series" eg 0100, 0046, 1000
"drawing_number" eg 0076000, 0000123, 0000004

There is also a Revision column(which the user can't see) that goes up by 1 each time a drawing has been modified and resubmitted to the database.
"revision" eg 01, 02, 03, ....... 99

So a search on 0046 series might pull back drawings

0046-0010000-01
0046-0010000-02
0046-0010000-03
0046-0076000-01
0046-0076888-01
0046-0076888-02

The problem is that I only want drawings with the highest revisions returned eg

0046-0010000-03
0046-0076000-01
0046-0076888-02

The code below worked like a charm in the test stages pulling back a few hundred records but now that i've uploaded 10's of thousands of records to the DB the whole lot dies if the search result pulls back more than a few thousand records.

SELECT * FROM dbo.Drawing_Database
where dbo.Drawing_Database.revision=(select max(revision) from dbo.Drawing_Database self where self.drawing_series + self.drawing_number = dbo.Drawing_Database.drawing_series + dbo.Drawing_Database.drawing_number) Drawing_Series like '0046' order by Drawing_Series, Drawing_Number

There must be a simpler way of doing this as i can pull out duplicate series + numbers using " HAVING Count(*)>1" but dont know where to go from there.

Help!

Help With A Join And Duplicates?

Jul 23, 2005

Hi All,I am banging my head against a brick wall over this problem, so anyhelp in the correct direction would be muchly appreciated!I have 2 SQL (MS SQL) server tables, realated to -a Property,Sales of that property.A property is uniquely identifed by its Roll, valuation Number andSuffix (not my choosing). Each property can only appear in the property table once, and can onlyhave 1 assessment - but can have multiple sales (ie - over theannalysis period the same property can sell more than once). There is approximatly 19000 properties relating to about 8000 sales. When creating a query to list property and most recent sale (if thereis any) I end up with somthing like this -SELECT [roll], [valuation], [suffix], [sale date]FROM [property]LEFT JOIN [sales]ON[property].[roll] = [sales].[roll] AND[property].[valuation] = [sales].[valuation] AND[property].[suffix] = [sales].[suffix](table names simplifed).I get rows where there is all the property data there, but sale date(etc.) is null (as I would expect from a left join), but the problem is- when there is more than 1 sale for a property it pulls out anothercopy of the property data.In short, because of that I come out with more records than properties.ie -roll valuation suffix sale date12 456789 A 1/1/200312 788988 B NULL14 123456 A 1/1/200314 123456 A 1/1/2004(Note - the last two are the same property).I didn't know that the left join can affect both joined tables! Is there any way around this? Any suggestions/hints in the rightdirection would be very much appreciated!THANKS!

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Delete Duplicates From Table Based On Two Columns?

May 20, 2015

Assuming I have a table similar to the following:

Auto_ID Account_ID Account_Name Account_Contact Priority
1 3453463 Tire Co Doug 1
2 4363763 Computers Inc Sam 1
3 7857433 Safety First Heather 1
4 2326743 Car Dept Clark 1
5 2342567 Sales Force Amy 1
6 4363763 Computers Inc Jamie 2
7 2326743 Car Dept Jenn 2

I'm trying to delete all duplicate Account_IDs, but only for the highest priority (in this case it would be the lowest number).

I know the following would delete duplicate Account_IDs:

DELETE FROM staging_account
WHERE auto_id NOT IN
(SELECT MAX(auto_id)
FROM staging_account
GROUP BY account_id)

The problem is this doesn't take into account the priority; in the above example I would want to keep auto_ids 2 and 4 because they have a higher priority (1) than auto_ids 6 and 7 (priority 2).

How can I take priority into account and still remove duplicates in this scenario?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Multiple Contact / Possibilities - How To Remove Duplicates

Aug 11, 2015

I have a bunch of contacts that I've scored how well their names match to other contacts in the same business. I can programmatically figure out how to parse the results, but would like to know how to do this via SQL. My problem is for Business_fk 968976 I have 7 contacts. In the end I should have 4 contacts based on name match. For the business key listed Gerardo Lopez is in the ContactScore table twice for Contact keys 7355719 and 57028145. I then have two rows like so:

PossibleBusinessContactMatch_pk BusinessContact_fk Business_fk BusinessContactMatch_fk MatchTypeCode MatchScore MatchRank FirstName LastName Phone Email
------------------------------- ------------------ ----------- ----------------------- ------------- ----------- ----------- -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ---------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1772960 57028145 968976 7355719 C 46 1 GERARDO I LOPEZ 8162214000
838834 7355719 968976 57028145 C 50 1 GERARDO

Each reference each other, and 2 is a good case, a more difficult case would have key 1 listed 10 times showing a ContactMatch_fk of 2 - 11, and then Contact_fk 2 listed 10 times with a ContactMatch_fk of 1, 3-11.I know 57028145 maps to 7355719 from the first row in the ContactScore table, so when Contact_fk of 7355719 comes up I should be able to skip it and not process that match. Hopefully that makes sense. Anyway here is the test data:

IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.objects WHERE object_id = OBJECT_ID(N'[dbo].[ContactScore]') AND type in (N'U'))
DROP TABLE [dbo].[ContactScore];
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[ContactScore]
(
[ContactScore_pk]INT NOT NULL,
[Contact_fk]INT NOT NULL,

Duplicates Using MAX Date Self-Join

Feb 6, 2014

Got a data set like this:

rowID PersonID Start Date End Date
===== ======== ========== ==========
001 6575556 19/06/2013 09/07/2013
001 6575556 20/06/2013 12/07/2013
001 6575556 21/06/2013 12/07/2013
002 9478522 15/05/2013 18/05/2013
003 7753423 22/08/2013 01/09/2013

Person can have more than one start/end date therefore I get multiple of the same row ID and Person ID when looking at their dates.

I want to display the most recent end date and associated data if there is more than one start/end date for the same person. I decided to do a self join with max Date aggregate using this against a main select from the Table1:

SELECT PersonID,
MAX([End Date]) AS MaxEndDate
FROM Table1
GROUP BY
PersonID

And join it this way:

select RowID,
PersonID,
[End Date]
FROM Table1 INNER JOIN (
SELECT PersonID,
MAX([End Date]) AS MaxEndDate

[Code] ....

When I run the sub-query on its own it gives me the single PersonID and Max Date but on self-joining with Table1 I still get the duplicates values.

Suppress Duplicates In Join Results

Sep 2, 2004

I really must be missing something here...

Trying to cross-update 2 tables.
Picture a checkbook reconcilliation without common check numbers. The checkbook has uniqueids and the bank has transaction ids but they are different. So the match is on date/payee and amount. So I wrote 2 checks to the same person, on the same day, for the same amount but forgot to enter one in the register.

when i run the update statement:
update b set b.bankid=c.myid
from checks c
join bank b on c.cdate=b.cdate
and c.payee=b.payee
and c.cost=b.cost

Both bank statement records would be updated to my one check record [can't happen]
Also: this will be running on a hundred thousand records per month with potential for duplication/ommission on either side.

What's a poor newbie missing??
I'm doing something similar on a lesser volume by running sequential statements through an ASP script but performance is poor. I know SQL can do this, just not how to approach it.

Thanks for any guidance
Dale

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Find Matching Phone Of Person Based On Relation Type - Duplicates

Aug 11, 2014

I have a patient record and emergency contact information. I need to find duplicate phone numbers in emergency contact table based on relationship type (RelationType0 between emergency contact and patient. For example, if patient was a child and has mother listed twice with same number, I need to filter these records. The case would be true if there was a father listed, in any cases there should be one father or one mother listed for patient regardless. The link between patient and emergency contact is person_gu. If two siblings linked to same person_gu, there should be still one emergency contact listed.

Below is the schema structure:

Person_Info: PersonID, Person Info contains everyone (patient, vistor, Emergecy contact) First and last names
Patient_Info: PatientID, table contains patient ID and other information
Patient_PersonRelation: Person_ID, patientID, RelationType
Address: Contains address of all person and patient (key PersonID)
Phone: Contains phone # of everyone (key is personID)

The goal to find matching phone for same person based on relationship type (If siblings, then only list one record for parent because the matching phones are not duplicates).

Getting Duplicates With Select Distinct (full Outer Join)

Duplicates Again! UNION Join - Remove Records With Column Diff.

Sep 9, 2004

Hello All,

We all were new at one point.... any help is appreciated.

Objective:

Combining two 49,000 row tables and remove records where there is only 1 column difference. (keeping the specified column value removing the one with a blank.)

Reason:

I have 2 people going through a list, coding a specific column with a single letter value. They both have different progress on each sheet. Hence I am trying to UNION them and have a result of their combined efforts without duplicates.

My progress/where I'm stuck:

Here is my first query/union:

SELECT * FROM [Eds table]
UNION SELECT * FROM [Vickis table];

As shown above, I have unioned these 2 tables and my results removed th obvious whole record duplicates, but since 1 column is different on these, a union without criteria considers them unique.....

an example of duplicates that I must remove are as follows:

142301 - Product 5000 - 150# - S (Keep)
142031 - Product 5000 - 150# - "" <--- Blank (Remove)

I am trying to run another query on my first query results so I don't mess my first query up. Here it is:

SELECT DISTINCT [Prod #], [Prod Name], [Prod Description], [Product Type]
FROM [Combined Tables]
WHERE [Product Type]<>" ";

Please Help! Thank you in advance.

5 minutes away from pulling my last one!

ref, initials
Ag-4xYS
Ag-6xYS,BL
Ap-1xKW
At-2x SAS,CW
At-3x SAS,CW

OR the above but using variable number of columns based on the maximum number of different initials for each row.this is not strictly required, but maybe neater for further work on the view

Ag-4xYS
Ag-6xYS,BL

Aug 20, 2013

I am facing issues with a LEFT JOIN in my query. It takes 45 secs to process on the production server due to huge number of records.building a query to avoid the LEFT JOIN. I am Trying to use UNION ALL and it works much faster except that I am stuck in the last bit.

scripts (sample):

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tbl_PersonDetails](
[PersonID] [int] NOT NULL,
[LeaveTimeId] [int] NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]

[code]...

Need Rows from tbl_PersonDetails macthing (all 3 below) following criteria :

1. tbl_PersonDetails.PersonID is present in tbl_PersonLeaveDetails
2.tbl_PersonDetails.TimeID does not fall between any of the aligned (matching personid) FromTimeID and ToTimeID in tbl_PersonLeaveDetails.
3. not using LEFT join

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Join On Clause With IN Statement

Apr 25, 2014

I've come across a piece of code which i have never seen before.

ON T.CT_YEAR in
(
case
.[DBO].[FN_GET_YEAR]
(
CAST
(
C.[YEAR] AS VARCHAR(4)

[Code] ....

The CT_Year column is simply C for current year L for last year, O for Other, N for Next.

The Function simply returns the year value.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Join Clause With BETWEEN Statement

Aug 12, 2014

I need to write a SQL script where a join condition is using date columns (effective_date, ineffective_date). The effective date columns can be slightly different (e.g. differ by a day) for some rows of data. I need the join condition to accommodate these date differences and return these rows of data as well.

I have a table which uses multiple joins to create another table but it turns out that the effective_date which is used in the join to match row together does not work all the time since some of the dates for the effective date column are out of sync meaning records that show data as missing even when the other table contains the data. I tried the SQL script below using the BETWEEN clause but it returning 6 rows instead of 3–

select t2.[entity_id]
,t2.[effective_date]
,[company_name]
,[last_accounts_date]
,[s_code]
,[s_code_description]

[Code] .....

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Statement Using Case And Join Together

Jan 29, 2015

I am trying to use this logic into a query:

Select P.S,E.S,E.R
from Pack P(nolock)
join Exp E on P.Id=E.O
on E.R is null
case when E.R is not null then ''
else ''
end
where P.s='PLT000044'

I have to query two conditions joining the tables. when E.R is NULL and when E.R is not null. but the value is coming from the join between the 2 tables :P and E.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: 2 Select Statements To Join By CalendarID

Jun 5, 2014

In t-sql 2008 r2, I have 2 select statements that I would like to join by calendarID . I would like to obtain the results in the same query but I keep getting syntax errors.

The first select is the following:

SELECT Section.number, Section.homeroomSection,
Course.number, Course.name, Course.homeroom, Calendar.calendarID
FROM Section
INNER JOIN Course
ON Course.number = Section.number
INNER JOIN Calendar
ON Course.calendarID = Calendar.calendarID

The second select is the following:

SELECT Person.studentNumber, Enrollment.grade, Calendar.calendarID, Calendar.name, Calendar.endYear
FROM Enrollment
INNER JOIN Person
ON Enrollment.personID = Person.personID
INNER Calendar
ON Enrollment.calendarID = Calendar.calendarID

I would like the following columns to display:

Section.number, Section.homeroomSection, Course.number, Course.name, Course.homeroom, Calendar.calendarID
Person.studentNumber, Enrollment.grade, Calendar.name, Calendar.endYear

Thus can you show me how to change the sqls listed above to obtain the results I am looking for?

If possible I would like the sql to look something like the following:

select Section.number, Section.homeroomSection, Course.number, Course.name, Course.homeroom, Calendar.calendarID
Person.studentNumber, Enrollment.grade, Calendar.name, Calendar.endYear
from
(SELECT Section.number, Section.homeroomSection,
