T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Combining Result In Column Level

May 14, 2014

Below is my sample table and data

With Item as(
Select 1 as ItemId,'ItemName1' as ItemName,100 as position union all
Select 2 as ItemId,'ItemName2' as ItemName,200 as position union all
Select 3 as ItemId,'ItemName3' as ItemName,300 as position union all
Select 4 as ItemId,'ItemName4' as ItemName,400 as position union all
Select 5 as ItemId,'ItemName5' as ItemName,500 as position union all
Select 6 as ItemId,'ItemName6' as ItemName,600 as position union all
Select 7 as ItemId,'ItemName7' as ItemName,700 as position),

Mapping as (
Select 1 as Parent, 2 as child union all
Select 1 as Parent, 3 as child union all
Select 1 as Parent, 4 as child union all
Select 5 as Parent, 6 as child union all
Select 5 as Parent, 7 as child )Expected Result:

ParentItemIdParentItemNameParentpositionChildItemIdChildItemNameChildposition
1ItemName11002ItemName2200
1ItemName11003ItemName3300
1ItemName11004ItemName4400
5ItemName55006ItemName6600
5ItemName55007ItemName7700

I was thinking to achieve using union all but if i use union all it will combine the result in rows level. but i need in column level.

Combining Results Of Two Similar Queries Into One Result Set?

Mar 5, 2012

Customers order a product and enter in a source code (sourceCd). This sourceCd is tied to a marketing program. Idea being we can see that 100 customers ordered from this promo, 200 from this catalog, etc etc. The sourceCd that a customer enters is not always accurate so there is a magic process that adjusts this OrigSourceCd into a final SourceCd, that may or may not be the same.

I am trying to generate a result set of customer count by sales program based on both the original and final source code. Problem is, I have to do each query separately because in one, I have to join SourceCdKey to SourceCdKey to get the program associated with that SourceCd and in the other i have to join OrigSourceCdKey to SourceCdKey to get the program associated with the original sourceCd. There are some programs is one results set that are not in the other, and vice versa.

I'm trying to generate a list of that shows customer counts before and after for each program, some which may be null for one, but have counts for the other. I have tries creating 2 separating views and joining them but that doesn't work because it only returns the ones they have in common.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Combining Multiple Rows Into One Row Per Employee

I'm working on a project where I need to retrieve employees data and then combine the data into single row per employee.

Sample Data:

WITH SampleData (PERSON, [DATA], [FIELD]) AS

SELECT 1234,'04/02/2014','Date'
UNION ALL SELECT 1234,'123','Department'
UNION ALL SELECT 1234,80.0,'Rate'
)
SELECT *

The results from the above are as follows:

PERSONDATA FIELD
123404/02/2014Date
1234123 Department
123480.0 Rate

The desired results would be:

PERSONDate Department Rate
123404/02/2014 123 80.0

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Combining Keys To Create A Master List?

Mar 5, 2014

I am struggling trying to clean some data and identify duplicate records. I used fuzzy grouping in SSIS and provided back a series of groups. The issue is some of the individual records can appear in multiple groups (so in reality the groups should be combined). This is best explained with an example:

Original Data
key1 key2
647942600014
647942285437
2324662490640
2324662285437
2324662066128
2222 2285437
2222 1111111
9999 1111111
9999 2222222

Should look like:

22222600014
22222285437
22222490640
22222066128
22221111111
22222222222

I only choose 2222 as the surviving key because it was the smallest number. I really do not care which number remains as long as it is the same across.

I tried playing with self joins between the tables but have had no success.

I am using Sql Server 2008 and the number of records could 500K to 1MM.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Combining Costs From Across Tables To Populate Temporary Table?

Nov 17, 2014

I have a temporary table (@tblResults) that has 4 columns that need to be populated with a calculation made from columns held within 2 other tables.

Joins
@tblResults tr JOIN dbo.MarketPrice mp
ON tr.Item = mp.Item
AND tr.[Month] = mp.[Month]
AND tr.[Year] = mp.[Year]
AND mp.[Date] BETWEEN tr.LatestStartDate AND tr.PriorEndDate

[code]....

Where the 2 dbo.MarketPrice and dbo.MillDifferentials date fields are NOT equal, the last (chronologically) dbo.MillDifferentials.Diff value should be used (or '0' if no previous value found).

so expected results where @tblResults.Id = 1:

The dbo.MarketPrice.Price value of '2014-10-29' should be combined with the dbo.MillDifferentials.Diff value of '2014-10-06' - this produces the combined Max value of 184.50
The dbo.MarketPrice.Price value of '2014-04-28' should be combined with the dbo.MillDifferentials.Diff value of '2014-04-28'
The dbo.MarketPrice.Price value of '2014-01-22' should be combined with the dbo.MillDifferentials.Diff value of '2014-01-20'
The dbo.MarketPrice.Price value of '2014-01-21' should be combined with the dbo.MillDifferentials.Diff value of '2014-01-20' - this produces the combined Min value of 111.50
The dbo.MarketPrice.Price value of '2014-01-04' should be combined with '0.00' if there is no matching or previous dbo.MillDifferentials.Diff value OR the top 1/max (most recent) dbo.MillDifferentials.Diff value if a record is found before the specified @tblResults.LatestStartDate

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Is Comparison Of Hash Passwords Happens At Client Or DB Level

Jun 18, 2014

I was told that the authentication is a process that concerns about security. So the authentication process should be hidden from the client as possible and the client should receive a flag value (1= password is correct and authenticated, -1= incorrect password) and/or user name of the authenticated user. So it should be a SQL operation that should occur in the back end. So the process in detail should be, client form sends user name and hashed /encrypted password to SQL, SQL authenticates and it sends 1/-1 with the user name to the client as the return value and the output.

But when i do research that was not the case, all the threads i have seen on web, either the app is windows or web, developers do two operations:

1. the salt value of the user is searched by user name then return the salt value along with the PasswordHash to the client form / or to the business layer

2. Then use the entered password and the returned salt value to generate a PasswordHash and then compare this passwordHash with the returned passwordHash. if match password is correct if not password is incorrect.

Is this actually how developers write code to authenticate a user in a login event? If so basically the password comparison happens at the client side(either in the form or in the business layer) then wouldn't this be huge security risk by exposing the actual salt and passwordHash to the client?

Combining Column Values Into One Column

Oct 30, 2007

Hi Folks, Im new to SQL, and I am trying to do the following:

I have a table Documents with DocID, Path and FileName.
A second table Keywords has KwdID, KeywordString
A third table DocumentKeywords links the two with DocID,KwdID. Multiple keywords are linked to one document.

I want to create a SELECT query that makes a result table that contains Path, FileName and Keywords columns where the Keywords column contains entries like "Keyword1,Keyword2,Keyword3" ie. a comma delimited list of keyword strings which have been built from the keywords that associate with a specific document.

I found a nice sample here
http://www.sqlteam.com/article/using-coalesce-to-build-comma-delimited-string
which shows how to return just the comma delimited string itself:

DECLARE @List varchar(100)

SELECT @List = COALESCE(@List + ', ', '') + Keywords.KeywordString
FROM DocumentKeywords
WHERE KwdID = 1

SELECT @List

I cannot seem to integrate this into the query so that it calculates the string for each row on the fly. My suspicion is that the capability is there. Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Thanks

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Rounding Off A Percentage Result?

Apr 30, 2014

how to remove the trailing chars from the end of a percentage calculation.

For instance:

SELECT
CAST(NULLIF(t.SLAHours,0) - t.TotalDownTime as REAL) /
CAST(NULLIF(t.SLAHours,0) as REAL) * 100 as [%Availability]
FROM DBName.dbo.TableName t

This gets me '99.00294' (example)

I may have gone about this totally the wrong way - but I just want to trim the unwanted chars from the end - I've managed to trim some off by using REAL but I only need the basic percentage number.

Both source columns are INT data type.

Column Level Constraints

Jul 17, 2001

Hello all.

First of all, I've been a reader of swynk.com for quite sometime now, and I'd like to say 'thank you' to everyone who contributes.

Today, I'm the town moron.. haha I'm having issues with column level constraints. I have a varchar(50) where I want to keep *,=,#,/, .. etc, OUT OF the value input. I don't want to strip them. I simply want for sql to throw an error if the insert contains those (and other characters). The only characters that I want in the column are A-Z and 0-9. However, it's not a set number of characters per insert. It always varies... There has to be an easier way to do this than creating a constraint for every possibilty... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jeremy

Concurrency Down To The Column Level - Sql

May 15, 2007

Using VS05 pro SP1...

(I AM REPOSTING THIS IN SQL FROM VB LANGUAGE BECAUSE I RECEIVED NO RESPONSES...ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED)

This is for a telephony application using Last In Wins concurrency...

Basically, we want to update only the columns that have changed in a row, not the entire row with the few changed columns. We are using TableAdapters exclusively.

We need concurrency down to the column level...that is to say, if a concurrency exception is thrown, we don't just want the new row to be UPDATED and overwrite the old row in the datasource...we only want the new columns to be UPDATED to the datasource...consider the following sequence...

- Fill table A and table B identically

- change column1 value in table A

- Update table A

- change column2 value in table B

- Update table B - this will generate a concurrency error.

Most of the help centers around using the merge command, to update table B, but in the situation above, we would lose the change to column1 (which we don't want to loose). Merge preserves the changes in table B (column2), but it would have the old value for column1, thus we would loose the value in column 1 when we updated the new merged table.

So, we need a way to build a datatable made up of the values in the datasouce plus the changes in the table B, which we will then update.

I have played endlessly with for/next type of constructs to build the new table of new column values using row version data, but I cannot get it to happen.

Upon exception for UPDATING table B, how do we build a temporary table from the datasource (so we get the change to column 1) and the new changes in table B, so we can update the temporary table and not loose any data.

Thanks!

Bob

Column Level Security

Apr 29, 2008

Hey,
I have 3 columns in a table Ex:
Select Column1,Column2,Column from TableName

No. 1. Person A should have permission to read values only (Column1, Column3 of the table) -
2. Person B, should have permission to read only (Column 2).

Here my question is , I have to write one single stored procedure to statisfy both conditions. Which means, if person A execute this stored procedure , he shoud get only column 1 & 3 values . similarly other person b should get column 2 value. Ex:
Column 1 - Empid
Column 2 - SSN (Only for Top user display)
Column 3 - Join Date
Person A & B as a SQL or Windows login

FROM SomeTable A
Cross Join (Select Name FROM AnotherTable) B

AnotherTable has one record in it. To avoid a Cartesian issue. Like I said just an example

In my real script the table aliased as A is from a list of tables in a sys.tables query that loops through to the end.

Unable To Resolve Column Level Collations

May 14, 2008

Hi,

When I try to execute a package I get this following error. I have a bunch of similar packages which runs fine on the same source(sybase) and destination(sqlserver 2005), just different tables. Only few of them fails and all of them have the same error of "Unable to resolve column level collations. Bulk-copy cannot continue". I checked for the dtatatype and length between source and destination, both are same. The user have all the required rights on the objects in both source and destination.

Error at Data Flow Task For Test1 - test_tbl_job [OLE DB Destination [16]]: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Unable to resolve column level collations. Bulk-copy cannot continue.".

Error at Data Flow Task For Test1 - test_tbl_job [OLE DB Destination [16]]: Failed to open a fastload rowset for "testdb..tbl2". Check that the object exists in the database.

On further trial and error I found that if I remove the fast load option, it works without glitch.

Its kind of wierd though....

Any body has faced this situation?

Thanks
Karunakaran
