I have a constraint on a 3rd party app that I can't change the app but can add a constraint at the table level. The constraing works but the error message back is ugly. Is there a way to do some kind of raiserror on a constraint that could send better info back to the user, I have done this in triggers, is the an approach for constraints?
i need the t-sql statement for a check constraint that has a custom error message that shows the proper fromat for column entry.... i know its confusing...
example... if im using the authors table in the pubs database and the numbers in the au_id column reads xxx-xxxxxx where x represents numbers... what must i do so that the error message reads the proper format... ie. use proper format XXX-XXXXXX, is what i might want the error message to read.
You get the idea. So logproc just logs that the procedure has started or stopped to a table so we can monitor it easily.
The procedure is then run by an agent job every morning. This morning we had a little bit of an odd one. In the example above we effectively got to 'proc3' being started (as it was logged). However there was then an error of String or binary data would be truncated (severity 16 i believe). However when proc3 was then manually run it worked (the data was unchanged). Then going back proc2 works fine, and its actually proc1 that has the error.
I have looked through the procs in question (and the wrapper) and cant find any error handling that is relevent (there one try and catch block completely separate at the end of the wrapper procedure for a small routine).
I execute a script that someone else wrote and I get Query Completed with Errors but there is not an error message. If I highlight and execute parts of the script, it completes successfully.
I am trying to setup an indicator value for an SSRS report to show green and red values on a report, based on the NRESULT value. The problem I am facing is that I have several different CASE statements that have the same logic, and they are processing just fine. NRESULT is a decimal field, so no conversion should be necessary. I do not know why I am getting the "Arithmetic overflow error converting varchar to data type numeric." error message.
Below is the CASE statement where the error is occurring. It is in the part of the ELSE CASE. The first CASE works just fine when the ELSE CASE is commented out. If I also change the ELSE CASE statement to say "else case when LEFT(NRESULT,1) = '-' then '0'", then it processes fine, too, so it has to be something I am missing something in the check on negative values. I do need the two checks, one for positive and one for negative values, to take place.
case when LEFT(NRESULT,1) <> '-' then --This portion, for checking positive values, of the CASE statement works fine. CASE WHEN LEFT(ROUND(NRESULT,2),4) between 0.00 and 0.49 THEN '2' --Green ELSE CASE WHEN LEFT(ROUND(NRESULT,2),4) > 0.49 THEN '0' --Red ELSE '3' --White END END else case when LEFT(NRESULT,1) = '-' then --This portion, for checking negative values, of the CASE statement is producing the conversion error message.
[code]....
I checked the NRESULT field, and there are not any NULL values in there, either.
The other day developer asked me to create a new table that had a FK constraint to an existing largish table on the largish table's primary key.
When i ran the script, it took it about 4 seconds to complete, and in the meantime i had 3 deadlocks show up from other processes attempting to use the table the FK was being created from. The new table was empty at this point.
I've never seen this behavior before so I'm curious if creating a new FK constraint will cause a table lock on the source table for the FK.
I have a case where if the Id field is a specific value, I don't want to allow null in another field, but if the Id value <> a specific value, null is ok.
In the example below, inserting the first record should succeed, the second should succeed, and the 3rd should fail. Right now the 2nd two fail. I gotta be missing something easy, but I can't figure it out.
USE tempdb GO IF OBJECT_ID('tempdb.dbo.CheckConstraintTest') IS NOT NULL DROP TABLE tempdb.dbo.CheckConstraintTest; CREATE TABLE CheckConstraintTest
We are using SQL CE 3.5 on tablet PCs, that synchs with our host SQL 2005 Server using Microsoft Synchronization Services. On the tablets, when inserting a record, we get the following error: A duplicate value cannot be inserted into a unique index. [ Table name = refRegTitle,Constraint name = PK_refRegTitle But the only PK on this table is RegTitleID.
The table structure is: [RegTitleID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [RegTitleNumber] [int] NOT NULL, [RegTitleDescription] [varchar](200) NOT NULL, [FacilityTypeID] [int] NOT NULL, [Active] [bit] NOT NULL,
The problem occurs when a Title Number is inserted and a record with that number already exists. There is no unique constraint on Title Number. Has anyone else experienced this?
The problem is as follows. SQL Express 2008 R2, backup is made by the means of bat file and sp. Need to have a table that would hold columns like 'date_of_backup', 'duration', 'message' (the one that appears on 'messages' tab in the result area after backup completion/failure). This is an example of real message that I want to catch:

What I am trying to do, Extract the data from SQL table and Insert in Email Body and email to user. I got good article on Internet, I follow all steps as it is, but still I am getting error.
Here is the link : [URL] ....
But I am getting Error:
Error: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.FormatException: Index (zero based) must be greater than or equal to zero and less than the size of the argument list. at System.Text.StringBuilder.AppendFormat(IFormatProvider provider, String format, Object[] args) at System.String.Format(IFormatProvider provider, String format, Object[] args) at ST_7f59d09774914001b60a99a90809d5c5.csproj.ScriptMain.Main()
We have a database where many tables have a field that has to be lengthened. In some cases this is a primary key or part of a primary key. The table in question is:-
/****** Object: Table [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] Script Date: 09/25/2014 14:05:09 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO SET ANSI_PADDING ON GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd](
[Code] ....
The script I am using is
DECLARE@Column varchar(100)--The name of the column to change DECLARE@size varchar(5)--The new size of the column DECLARE @TSQL varchar(255)--Contains the code to be executed DECLARE @Object varchar(50)--Holds the name of the table DECLARE @dropc varchar(255)-- Drop constraint script
[Code] ....
When I the the script I get the error message Could not create constraint. See previous errors.
Looking at the strings I build
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] DROP CONSTRAINT PK_DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd ALTER TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] Alter Column [Patient System Number] varchar(10) ALTER TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] ADD CONSTRAINT PK_DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED ([Patient System Number] ASC,[Episode Number] ASC,[CensusDate] ASC) WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]
They all seem fine except the last one which returns the error
Msg 8111, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot define PRIMARY KEY constraint on nullable column in table 'DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd'. Msg 1750, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 Could not create constraint. See previous errors.
None of the fields I try to create the key on are nullable.
I have an File System Task that copies a file from one directory ot another. When I hard code the target directory (c:dirfile.txt) it works fine. When I change it to a virtual directory (\serverdirfile.txt) I get a security error:
[File System Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Access to the path '\gracehbtest oS2TMM_Live_Title_000002.xml' is denied.".
I would like to supress an Informational error that SQL is returning when I run a stored proc that I created. The error message returned is:
Warning: Null value eliminated from aggregate.
The values returned from the stored proc are the results from a 'select * from #tmp_tbl". Before returning the values, I simply create the temp table, populate it and then run the select statement. Prior to getting my results, I get the error message. Can I suppress it and how?
I'm trying to use an XML Task to do a simple XSLT operation, but it fails with this error message:
[XML Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "There are multiple root elements. Line 5, position 2.".
The source XML file validates fine and I've successfully used it as the XML Source in a data flow task to load some SQL Server tables. It has very few line breaks, so the first 5 lines are pretty long: almost 4000 characters, including 34 start-tags, 19 end-tags, and 2 empty element tags. Here's the very beginning of it:
<ESDU releaselevel="2006-02" createdate="26 May 2006"><package id="1" title="_standard" shorttitle="_standard" filename="pk_stan" supplementdate="01/05/2005" supplementlevel="1">
This package contains the standard ESDU Series.
There is only 1 ESDU root element and only 1 package element.
Of course, the XSLT stylesheet is also an XML document in its own right. I specify it directly in the XML Task:
Hi there, Can anyone help me in catching @@error value. I have a stored procedure which return @@error value, I need to read that in my dataaccesslayer and act according to it. how do I catch the return value from stored procedure in my dataaccesslayer. if I am not wrong @@error return a bool value
dear friends i am writng a store procedure to insert into a two table .table 1 data inserted but when i inserting into a table2 it have some error at that time table 1 data also want to delete.give suggestions
I am writing a stored procedure that loads transaction logs to a database and I am having trouble trapping meaningful error messages. When ever the load fails, it gives me two error messages, the first one is meaningful and the second one just states that the load ended abnormally. Unforunately, when I capture the error using @@error after the load statement, it is the second error message that I am getting.
Is there anyway to trap the first error message as well?
I currently have defined a source server, a transformation, and a destination server using DTS. How and where do I create an error routine that would capture any and all errors that would occur. This would include connection error, transformation errors etc. I know the errors can be written out to a text file but I would like them written to a table on my destination server.
The DTS package will be called from an external program using the xp_cmdshell extended stored procedure. We are using it this way as a flag so if one transformation fails it will return a 1. If all are successful it will return a O. These will be our flags to check the errors table in the destination server.
Could someone tell me where this code is to go and what the code will look like. Samples would be the most help.
is there any way to do sometype of Error handling with in a Stored Proc? Example, If I have a deadlock, can I trap that error and execute other sql code or will always simply kill the stored proc?
I have a composite unique key on the audit_hub table that includes TimeStamp, UID, Type, Mailbox all as part of the unique key.
I’m trying to do inserts, and know that in some cases I will violate unique index.
I’m using stored procedure, and want to handle the error gracefully there – just move on.
Reading from text-based log files via .vbs and get back the nasty popup window.
Looks like I have it right but obviously I don’t considering how it’s (not) working.
I thought error handling would be the simplest way to avoid dupe records. Might be necessary to run the same log in more than once, and only want to add the new records since the last insert session.
Here’s what I have. It obviously simply halts and complains immediately after the insert attempt.
ALTER procedure eml_HubInsert @TimeStamp bigint ,@UID varchar(255) ,@Type varchar(255) ,@MailBox varchar(255) ,@ServerID varchar(50) as insert into audit_hub (TimeStamp,UID,Type,Mailbox,ServerID) values (@TimeStamp,@UID,@Type,@MailBox,@ServerID)
1 question: What Error-Handling msut i mplement in a trigger, who is updating permanently two tables in a database (with the follow commands: insert, delete and update) ???
I have some stored procedures that insert information from a third party plugin that hooks into our database (so I can't do any client side validiation). The problem I am encountering is that some of the fields I use need to be in DateTime format. In order for SQL SERVER 2000 to be able to insert this field, the Date has to be in the correct syntax or an error is thrown.
Is there any way to do something like this in SQL SERVER 2000
Code:
DELCARE @SomeDate DateTime
Try Set @SomeDate = CONVERT(DateTime, Parameter1, 101) Catch return custom error describing what field is formatted wrong and exit stored procedure END
I am running some bcp copies through a Sql job. I am copying 35 tables in individual steps. However, sometimes the bcp step fails to copy the data, and I want the step to fail if the data is not copied properly. Is that possible? If so, how? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I have this stored procedure that I need to add error handling to. How would I do that??
REATE PROCEDURE November2000 AS SELECT TM#, LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME, FINALSUITDONE FROM dbo.EmployeeGamingLicense WHERE (FINALSUITDONE BETWEEN CONVERT(DATETIME, '2000-11-01 00:00:00', 102) AND CONVERT(DATETIME, '2000-11-30 00:00:00', 102))
i wrote this sql, seems v.straightforward to me. It works first time round, sets the foreigh key, but second time round should error out to the handler - but it just reports the errors to the message out and dosn't seem to fire the errhandler.
Its gotta be a simple mistake - perhaps you could show me.
Can i any one help regd error handling while executing stored procedure.
Sample Sequence of execution :
CREATE procedure RBI_Control_sp as begin set nocount on
begin try BEGIN TRANSACTION --Truncating the Table in ramcovm392(fin_ods) exec fin_ods..trun_sp
--Data Transfer From the Live Server to Dw-Server exec fin_ods..RBI_Data_Transfer_sp
insert into fin_wh..Status_report([object_name],row,[date]) select 'Data Tranfer','SUCCESS',getdate()
COMMIT TRANSACTION end try
begin catch [i need to insert the type of error in status report table] rollback transaction insert into fin_wh..Status_report([object_name],row,[date]) select 'Data Tranfer','FAILURE',getdate() end catch
I am calling some stored procedures from ASP. These strored procedures have to deal with lots of deletes and updates. So i have thought of implementing transaction commits and rollbacks. But if a rollback occurs in these stored procedures, i want to get a value back to asp page, based on this value i will run the next stored procedure.
hello. below is a very simple SP i have coded to insert a user into my database. i have created a unique index for the username column on my database table. if the username already i want to convey this to my C# code which is attempting the insert. i am using a combination of TRY/CATCH, RAISERROR and @@ERROR here to achieve my aim. could somebody please look at my code and tell me if the error handling code is OK, or is it overly complicated?
