Scenario is like that single dept can have multiple LocationHeads, If Location heads are multiple then they should display in single column using *starting the name as mentioned bottom under required output.
Below is sample of data:
create table #Temp(depID int, Name varchar(50),LocationHead varchar(50))
insert into #temp values(1,'test','head1')
insert into #temp values(1,'test','head2')
insert into #temp values(1,'test','head3')
insert into #temp values(2,'test1','head1')
insert into #temp values(2,'test1','head2')
Required output
depID Name LocationHead
1test *head1,*head2,*head3
2test1 *head1,*head2

I am trying to replace all special characters in a column with one special character.
Example:
Table: dbo.Employee
Column: Name
Name
-------
edwardneuman!"<]
mikemoreno)'>$:
JeffJensen"?>"
I am trying to get the namepart to the left of ANY special character. To achieve this, I am thinking of replacing all the special characters with a single special character so that I can find the first occurrence of that special character and grab left of the special character (SUBSTRING/CHARINDEX). This way I don't need to loop through all the special characters.
I am expecting the following results:
Name
-------
edwardneuman<<<<
mikemoreno<<<<<
JeffJensen<<<<

We have a database where many tables have a field that has to be lengthened. In some cases this is a primary key or part of a primary key. The table in question is:-
/****** Object: Table [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] Script Date: 09/25/2014 14:05:09 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
SET ANSI_PADDING ON
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd](
[Code] ....
The script I am using is
DECLARE@Column varchar(100)--The name of the column to change
DECLARE@size varchar(5)--The new size of the column
DECLARE @TSQL varchar(255)--Contains the code to be executed
DECLARE @Object varchar(50)--Holds the name of the table
DECLARE @dropc varchar(255)-- Drop constraint script
[Code] ....
When I the the script I get the error message Could not create constraint. See previous errors.
Looking at the strings I build
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] DROP CONSTRAINT PK_DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] Alter Column [Patient System Number] varchar(10)
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd] ADD CONSTRAINT PK_DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED ([Patient System Number] ASC,[Episode Number] ASC,[CensusDate] ASC)
WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]
They all seem fine except the last one which returns the error
Msg 8111, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot define PRIMARY KEY constraint on nullable column in table 'DTb_HWSQueueMonthEnd'.
Msg 1750, Level 16, State 0, Line 1

None of the fields I try to create the key on are nullable.

I have a script that loops through a series of tables to send data to a table from each of the tables. My issue is that not all tables have the columns I need in them. What I would like is to replace the column with another column when it does not exist. Something like below
Select Misisng_Column(A.Name, replace with B.Name) as Name
FROM SomeTable A
Cross Join (Select Name FROM AnotherTable) B
AnotherTable has one record in it. To avoid a Cartesian issue. Like I said just an example
In my real script the table aliased as A is from a list of tables in a sys.tables query that loops through to the end.

Writing this code using a CTE or any other method which do not use a table variable or a temp table as the users do not permissions to run this code from the application because of their roles which are required for creating and dropping the temp tables. I replaced table variable in place of Temp tables however the query never completes, probably because of the number of rows.

I have data like the following:
ID COUNTER DATA
1 10 BLAH
1 20 BLAH
2 10 BLAH
3 10 BLAH
2 20 BLAH
2 30 BLAH
What I want to return is:
1 20 BLAH
2 30 BLAH
3 10 BLAH
I want the top 1, having the highest counter from each ID. This is a highly simplified version of that I am pulling which also is between a date range, but same principle.
IE: SELECT * FROM Table WHERE ID in (SELECT DISTINCT ID FROM Table WHERE Date BETWEEN <date> AND <date>
I'd rather keep it in one statement if possible, but if I have to do it in multiple passes then so be it.

codcat = 'MK'
DATFIN = 01/01/2010
codpro = 'PIPPO'
codcat = 'MK'
DATFIN = 10/07/2014
I'd like to read both records but in SELECT obtain only the record with datfin MIN (01-10-2010)
I did the query but i was not able to do nothing of good. I obtain all times both records...
SELECT catalog.codpro AS CodProdotto,
catalog.codcat AS CodiceCatalogo,
MIN(catalog.datfin)

Here is my setup: I have the following tables -
tblPerson - holds basic person data.
tblPersonHistorical - holds a dated snapshot of the fkPersonId, fkInstitutionId, and fkDepartmentId
tblWebUsers - holds login data specific to a web account, but not every person will have a web account
I want to allow my admins to search for users (persons) with web accounts. They need to be able to search by tblPerson.FirstName, tblPerson.LastName, tblInstitutions.Institution, and tblDepartments.Department. The only way a Person record is joined an Institution or Department record is through many -> many junction table tblPersonHistorical.
People place orders and make decisions in our system. Because people can change institutions and departments, we need an historical snapshot of where they worked at the time they placed an order or made a decision. Of course that means some folks will have multiple historical records. That all works fine.
So when an admin user wants to search for webusers, I only want to return data, if possible, from he most recent/current historical records. This is where I am getting bogged down. When I search for a specific webuser I simply do a TOP 1 and ORDER BY DateCreated DESC. That returns only the current historical record for that person/webuser.
But what if I want to return many different webusers, and only want the TOP 1 historical for each returned?
Straight TOP by itself won't do it.
GROUP BY by itself won't do it.

I am working with some old code that we are trying to clean up and perform some performance enhancements. The performance is now, so Very much better. From over 3 minutes to under 2 seconds.
But I am still trying to get the multiple rows into a single row. I would like to place this into a CTE to get the multiples into a single row. I just cannot get my head around how is the best, most efficient way to write the query.
This is a small example of what the rows look like in the resultset, and what I want to single to be.
DECLARE @BillingCorrect TABLE

ContractNumber char(10)

I need to update multiple columns in a table with multiple condition.
For example, this is my Query
update Table1
set weight= d.weight,
stateweight=d.stateweight,
overallweight=d.overallweight
from
(select * from table2)d
where table1.state=d.state and
table1.month=d.month and
table1.year=d.year
If table matches all the three column (State,month,year), it should update only weight column and if it matches(state ,year) it should update only the stateweight column and if it matches(year) it should update only the overallweight column
I can't write an update query for each condition separately because its a huge select

Hi,
I have multiple columns in a Single Table and i want to search values in different columns. My table structure is
col1 (identity PK)
col2 (varchar(max))
col3 (varchar(max))
I have created a single FULLTEXT on col2 & col3.
suppose i want to search col2='engine' and col3='toyota' i write query as
SELECT
TBL.col2,TBL.col3
FROM
TBL
INNER JOIN
CONTAINSTABLE(TBL,col2,'engine') TBL1
ON
TBL.col1=TBL1.[key]
INNER JOIN
CONTAINSTABLE(TBL,col3,'toyota') TBL2
ON
TBL.col1=TBL2.[key]
Every thing works well if database is small. But now i have 20 million records in my database. Taking an exmaple there are 5million record with col2='engine' and only 1 record with col3='toyota', it take substantial time to find 1 record.
I was thinking this i can address this issue if i merge both columns in a Single column, but i cannot figure out what format i save it in single column that i can use query to extract correct information.
for e.g.;
i was thinking to concatinate both fields like
col4= ABengineBA + ABBToyotaBBA
and in search i use
SELECT
TBL.col4
FROM
TBL
INNER JOIN
CONTAINSTABLE(TBL,col4,' "ABengineBA" AND "ABBToyotaBBA"') TBL1
ON
TBL.col1=TBL1.[key]
Result = 1 row
But it don't work in following scenario
col4= ABengineBA + ABBCorola ToyotaBBA
SELECT
TBL.col4
FROM
TBL
INNER JOIN
CONTAINSTABLE(TBL,col4,' "ABengineBA" AND "ABB*ToyotaBBA"') TBL1
ON
TBL.col1=TBL1.[key]
Result=0 Row
Any idea how i can write second query to get result?

I’ve never written a query with multiple APPLY joins before and I’m running into some troubles with my first one. The below SQL statement runs within 10 seconds if I comment out either one of the APPLY joins and its corresponding field columns. However, when I try to execute with both APPLY joins, the query runs indefinitely. The longest I’ve waited before cancelling it is 90 minutes.
Now, I know there are probably other ways I could write this query to get me the results I’m looking for. I’m posting this on the board because I’m curious about finding out why multiple APPLY joins could cause SQL Server to run away. I’m hoping to gain some insight so that I can better understand how APPLY joins work so that in case I have a big need to do this again in the future (without suitable workarounds) I can code it correctly.
Here are some things I’ve tried so far…
1.Changed the States table into a subquery that only returns a single state
2.Change all the references inside the APPLY subqueries so that they had different aliases (just in case they were conflicting with each other).
3.Changed the CROSS applies to OUTER applies. States has 50 records and only 32 have matching permit data so the 18 extra iterations using OUTER APPLY don’t impact performance any when an APPLY is used by itself.
SELECT s.state_name
, COUNT(DISTINCT DUPS.PermitNumber) AS NumOfDupPermits
, SUM(DistinctPermits) AS DistinctPermits
FROM States S
CROSS APPLY (SELECT w.StateID, COUNT(*) as DistinctPermits
[Code] ....

Better method to detect records with one or more 0's, other than hard coding all of the potential values. For example, I need to detect account duplicates where the duplicate contains multiple/all 0's in the "MasterAccount" column:

INSERT INTO @Account

tblServer represents a server, tblInstance represents any SQL Server instances present on the server. They're related thru srvID.
I'd like to write a query that gives me servers with all instances, on one row. This dataset will populate a List in an SSRS report.
I have this but it's clunky and does not provide for more than 2 instances on the server. I'd like this to account for any number of instances all on one row without having to hard code multiple joins:
with serverInfo as

select
srv.srvType as Type
,srv.srvName as ServerName
,srv.srvIP as ServerIP
,ins.instNetName as InstanceNetName
