T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Selection With Conditional Insert Union

Apr 4, 2014

In this selection when there is particular segment found in the selection then need to add 2 records per segment otherwise just selected results

--Drop table #list
CREATE TABLE #LIST ( email varchar(20),Segment varchar(20), Addr1 varchar(20), City varchar(20),ST varchar(20), Code int)
--Drop table #subject
CREATE TABLE #Subject (Segment varchar(20), Fname varchar(20), LName varchar(20))

[Code] ....

---Selection results
SELECT L.Segment , l.email, l.Addr1 , l.City ,l.ST, l.code, s.Fname , s.LName into #expectedresult FROM #LIST L JOIN #Subject S ON l.Segment =s.Segment

--Now here what i am trying to get, union the below two record to the above "selection Results" for only segment ='VEC_BAL' or segment = 'PPC_BAL'

--2 records
SELECT l.segment , l.email , Addr1, City, ST, 999 as Code,'' fname, ''lname from #LIST l where email ='mmm@m.com'
SELECT l.segment , l.email , Addr1, City, ST, 888 as Code, '' fname, ''lname from #LIST l where email ='lrk@m.com'

--- expected results please execute below block ( per each segment 2 records will insert if there is segment ='VEC_BAL' or 'PPC_BAL' ). If there is no Vec_Bal or PPC BAL then no additional inserts, if there is only VEC_BAL no PPC_BAL then only 2 records insert
SELECT L.Segment , l.email, l.Addr1 , l.City ,l.ST, l.code, s.Fname , s.LName into #expctresults1 FROM #LIST L JOIN #Subject S ON l.Segment =s.Segment

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Using Union ALL Or Union Kills Performance On Stored Proc

Jun 12, 2014

SQL Server 2008 r2...

I have a query which does 3 selects and Union ALLs each to get a final result set. The performance is unacceptable - takes around a minute to run. If I remove the Union All so that the result sets are returned individually it returns all 3 from the query in around 6 seconds (acceptable performance).

Any way to join the result sets together without using Union All.

Each result set has exactly the same structure returned...

Query below [for reference]...

WITH cte AS (
SELECT A.[PoleID], ISNULL(B.[IsSpanClear], 0) AS [IsSpanClear], B.[SurveyDate], ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY A.[PoleID] ORDER BY B.[SurveyDate] DESC) rownum
FROM[UT_Pole] A
LEFT OUTER JOIN [UT_Surveyed_Pole] B ON A.[PoleID] = B.[PoleID]

Complicated Conditional Selection.

Aug 23, 2007

Befor question let me give you the tables, so simple:

tblProduct tblProductLang
ID ProductName Cost ID ProductName Lang
------------------------------------- -------------------------------------

1 Pencil 1 1 Bleistift gr-GR
2 Paper 1 2 Papier gr-GR
3 Button 2 3 Taste gr-GR
4 Mouse 15 4 Maus gr-GR
5 Monitor 45 4 Souris fr-FR

Ok. We have two table,
tblProduct: Keeps the product name and cost
tblProductLang: Keeps the product name in different language and short name of the language.

We are about the make a language file to our website. Default language is english. So no problem with the product name, user can easily understand. If yuser selects german , english names of the product will be nothing for him/her. We make a language table for products so when user changes language, he/she will get product name of the preffered language, if there is no equivalent name of that product, result will be default name. Let me give you a sample output:

If user wants gr-GR language , result will be: If user wants fr-FR language , result will be:

ID ProductName Cost ID ProductName Cost
------------------------------------- -------------------------------------
1 Bleistift 1 1 Pencil 1
2 Papier 1 2 Paper 1
3 Taste 2 3 Button 2
4 Maus 15 4 Souris 15
5 Monitor 45 5 Monitor 45

As you can see ID 1,2,3,4 came from tblProductLang as German, but ID 5 has no equivalent so it came from tblProduct as English.(Same thing for the french.) So question is how can i do that?

Conditional Union Possible?

Dec 15, 2005

I'm trying to achieve something like the following:

SELECT 'page' as type, page_filename as filename, page_title as title, page_metadescription as intro
FROM tbl_pages
WHERE CONTAINS(*, @searchterm)

IF 1=1 BEGIN
UNION all

SELECT 'news' as type, 'thiswillbeafilename.asp' as filename, news_title as title, news_intro as intro
FROM tbl_news
WHERE CONTAINS(*, @searchterm)
END
IF 2=2 BEGIN
UNION ALL

SELECT 'resource' as type, resource_filename as filename, resource_longtitle as title, resource_summary
FROM tbl_resources
WHERE CONTAINS(*, @searchterm)
END

I'm pretty sure this isn't possible using the approach i have here, however is there an different method i can use to ahcieve the same effect other than using dynamic sql?

Cheers,

TSQL: Conditional Union Statement

Jul 20, 2005

Is it possible to have a conditional union statement in a stored proc?Here's an example on the northwind database. If says there's a syntaxerror near the UNION statement. Looks like it doesn't like having theBEGIN directly in front of it.Is the only solution to create a dynamic sql string then call exec onit?Any help appreciated.Tom.CREATE PROCEDURE usp_test(@both int = 1)ASSET NOCOUNT ONSELECT * FROM territories WHERE regionid = 1IF @both = 1BEGINUNIONSELECT * FROM territories WHERE regionid = 2ENDGO

SQL Server 2012 :: Have Conditional Join / Union Based On Parameters Passed To Stored Procedure

Jul 15, 2014

I am writing a stored procedure that takes in a customer number, a current (most recent) sales order quote, a prior (to most current) sales order quote, a current item 1, and a prior item 1, all of these parameters are required.Then I have current item 2, prior item 2, current item 3, prior item 3, which are optional.

I added an IF to check for the value of current item 2, prior item 2, current item 3, prior item 3, if there are values, then variable tables are created and filled with data, then are retrieved. As it is, my stored procedure returns 3 sets of data when current item 1, prior item 1, current item 2, prior item 2, current item 3, prior item 3 are passed to it, and only one if 2, and 3 are omitted.I would like to learn how can I return this as a one data set, either using a full outer join, or a union all?I am including a copy of my stored procedure as it is.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Conditional Multiple ODBC Connections

Feb 4, 2015

If I have 100 ODBC clients all submitting the following SQL at the same time how do I know that the SQL inside the conditional only gets executed once. It appear SQL Server is preventing it from happening but was curious how. Or do I need to add something to prevent it from happening.

IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT name FROM sysobjects WHERE type='U' AND name = 'mytable)
BEGIN
CREATE table mytable (task int NOT NULL, first_name varchar(128), last_name varchar(128))

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Union Of Two Tables Returned Back To Main Query

Aug 18, 2014

Currently I have a standard query with a join to several tables. There are two additional tables MAS_CTB and MAS_STB. I would like to do a union between those two tables to get FIELDVALUE which will exist in either the CTB table or the STB table and then have that value be returned with the results of the original query.

I can of course write a UNION from the main query to the CTB and then to the STB table, however it's about 80 dummy fields I would have to replicate in the union which is why I was wondering if there was a more simple way.

Main Query:
SELECT Field1, Field2...Field80
From Table1
Join Table2

Union Portion:
Select FieldValue <------
From MAS_CTB
UNION
Select FieldValue <-----Return to main query above
From MAS_STB

Why Wont This Multiple Selection Listbox Insert Values Into Db

Jan 19, 2008

Hi, im a newbie. using VB.net / visual studio 2005 and SQL express
I have pasted my page code below
Basically i have a lisbox which is bound to an sqldatasource.  It allows the user to select multiple names.  I then have another datasource which when the page is submitted it posts various values from different fields into my db.  The insert works fine.My problem is that the multiple selection wont allow me to insert into my db, it just captures the first value.I used this sub below to prove  that when i click a button on my page it takes all my selected choices and puts them inside a text box, this works i can see them all.  I then bound the textbox text value to the one im inserting into the db, however once again its only inserting the first value from the text box, how is this possible, the text box shows all the values and its set to string, it should insert everything in the text box Protected Sub selectedContact_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
Dim alternatives As ListBox = CType(UploadPictureUI.FindControl("alternatives"), ListBox)
Dim TextBox1 As TextBox = CType(UploadPictureUI.FindControl("TextBox1"), TextBox)

TextBox1.Text &= alternatives.Items(intLoopIndex).Text & _

Conditional Insert

Oct 29, 2006

Hi,

Originally had 2 tables, fullsource and ssotarget. I did the following extract on fullsource due to its irregular schema and inserted into ssotarget:

INSERT SSOTARGET (pin, address1, address2, address3, MemberNo, Tel1, Tel2, Tel3, Tel4, DOB, Email, IDNumber, Title, Initials, Firstname, Surname, STATUS)

SELECT
PIN,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'ADDRESS DETAILS' AND PROPERTY = 'LINE 1' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS address1,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'ADDRESS DETAILS' AND PROPERTY = 'LINE 2' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS address2,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'ADDRESS DETAILS' AND PROPERTY = 'LINE 3' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS address3,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'ACOMPANY' AND PROPERTY = 'Membership Number' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS MemberNo,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'CONTACT DETAILS' AND PROPERTY = 'Preferred method of contact*' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS Tel1,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'CONTACT DETAILS' AND PROPERTY = 'Tel number (o/h) e.g. 011 2690000' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS Tel2,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'CONTACT DETAILS' AND PROPERTY = 'Mobile number e.g. 0821234567' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS Tel3,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'CONTACT DETAILS' AND PROPERTY = 'Fax number e.g. 011 2691000' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS Tel4,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'Date Of Birth' AND PROPERTY = 'eg. 04 Jan 1965' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS DOB,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'Email address' AND PROPERTY = 'Email Address' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS Email,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'ID Number' AND PROPERTY = 'ID Number' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS IDNumber,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'Member Information' AND PROPERTY = 'Title' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS Title,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'Member Information' AND PROPERTY = 'Initials' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS Initials,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'Member Information' AND PROPERTY = 'Firstname' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS Firstname,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'Member Information' AND PROPERTY = 'Surname' THEN VALUE ELSE NULL END) AS Surname,
MAX(CASE WHEN HEADER = 'ACOMPANY' AND PROPERTY = 'Membership Number' THEN STATUS ELSE NULL END) AS STATUS

FROM

FULLSOURCE

GROUP BY PIN

Now how can I reverse this to insert all the values back to tbl FULLSOURCE from maybe an updated SSOTARGET Tbl. FULLSOURCE looks like this:

SELECT [PIN]
,[SYSTEM]
,[Header]
,[Property]
,[Value]
,[Status]
,[ID_Header]
,[ID_Property]
FROM [fullsource]

Conditional Insert

Oct 22, 2004

I need to do a conditional insert. This is what I have tried, it does not work.
What am I doing incorrectly?

IF (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM TBL1 INNER JOIN
TBL2 ON TBL1.MODEL_ID = TBL2.MODEL_ID INNER JOIN
TBL3 ON TBL1.PRO_TYPE = TBL3.TYPE INNER JOIN
TBL4 ON TBL1.PRO_SITE = TBL4.WHDESC) > 0

INSERT INTO TBL5
SELECT TBL1.PRO_SITE, TBL1.MODEL_ID,
TBL1.NUM_SLOTS, TBL1.TARGET_DAYS, GETDATE() AS Expr1,
TBL3.TYPE_ID, NULL AS Expr2, TBL1.NUM_SLOTS AS Expr3, NULL AS Expr4, NULL
AS Expr5, 0 AS RAMP
FROM TBL1 INNER JOIN
TBL2 ON TBL1.MODEL_ID = TBL2.MODEL_ID INNER JOIN
TBL3 ON TBL1.PRO_TYPE = TBL3.TYPE INNER JOIN
TBL4 ON TBL1.PRO_SITE = TBL4.WHDESC

UPDATE TBL5
SET TEAMS=0
GO
UPDATE TBL5
SET TEAMS = (SELECT NUM_SLOTS
FROM TBL6 R1
WHERE (R1.TEAM_ID = TBL5.TEAM_ID)
)
WHERE (TEAM_ID =
(SELECT TEAM_ID
FROM TBL6 R3
WHERE (R3.TEAM_ID = TBL5.TEAM_ID)))
GO
UPDATE TBL5
SET TOTALTEAMS = TEAMS + RAMP
GO

I need to do a conditional because sometimes the select that returns data contains no records.

Thanks...

MS Access UNION With INTO Or INSERT INTO

Sep 17, 2004

I am using MS Access 2002 (SP-2) and I am trying to take fields from two different tables and send the output to a new table. My UNION logic works, but when I try to add logic to have the result set dumped into a new table, I am having trouble. The following two options have failed. Please help.
Thanks,
Mark

Option 1:

SELECT *
INTO xrmdurtn_auto_new
FROM
(
SELECT [RXC CODE], PXC, DAY

FROM [AUTOSEND DURATION]
WHERE ([RXC CODE] like 'Z2*')

UNION ALL
SELECT [RXC CODE], PXC, DAY
FROM [DURATION MM]
);

Option 2:

CREATE TABLE xrmdurtn_auto_new
(
[RXC CODE] Text,
PXC Text,
DAY Text
);

INSERT INTO xrmdurtn_auto_new
VALUES
(
SELECT [RXC CODE], PXC, DAY

FROM [AUTOSEND DURATION]
WHERE ([RXC CODE] like 'Z2*')

UNION ALL
SELECT [RXC CODE], PXC, DAY
FROM [DURATION MM]
);

INSERT Based On Conditional

Jun 4, 2008

Good Afternoon,

I am new to MSSQL and am trying to write a complicated SQL statement that I'm having trouble with. Any help that anyone can offer is much appreciated!

Here is the problem I am tackling:

I have a list of about 5,000 members of our organization stored in the MemberList MSSQL table. I have a separate MSSQL table (CityList) that has approximately 500,000 resident of a city.

I am trying to find matches between MemberList and CityList for the purposes of figuring out which of our members are registered voters.

The tricky part of this problem, is that there is no unique ID (such as a social security number) that is present in each list. Accordingly, I have decided to created several types of matches:

1. NameDOBMatch: Where the FirstName, LastName & DOB fields in MemberList table match the same fields in CityList table.

2. NameAddressMatch: Where the LastName, FirstName & Address fields in the MemberList table match the same fields in the CityList table.

3. DoubleMatch: A combination of the first two matches (i.e. where the LastName, FirstName, DOB, & Address fields in the MemberList table match the same fields in the CityList table).

My goal is to "loop" through the MemberList and CityList tables and to add a new row to a third MSSQL table (MemberMatch) each time one of the aforementioned matches is found. The MemberMatch table has the following fields:
1. MatchID (key)
2. MemberID (Unique ID of member from MemberList table)
3. ResidentID (Unqiue ID of matching member from CityList table).
4. MatchType (value of NameDOBMatch, NameAddressMatch or DoubleMatch, depending on match type).

If anyone could help me create an SQL statement that would accomplish that, I would very much appreciate it!

Thanks,
Bryan

Conditional Insert Trigger

Mar 14, 2006

Is there any way to create a "Conditional Insert Trigger"
My Scenario is this;
When a user adds an email address to the database, I want to look to see if the email address is like '%@acme-holdings%' and if it is then to change the value to 'Not allowed', otherwise to leave it alone and go ahead with inserting the original email address

TIA

Conditional Insert Without Using Exec

Dec 27, 2007

I've got a case where I am bringing older data into a brand new DB. Unfortunately, there are several versions of the old DB and I won't know ahead of time which one I will be running against. The data's basicaly the same, the table names are the same, but the column schema is NOT.
Basiclly, I want to use a conditional on the Insert.

Code Block

CREATE TABLE TestTable
(Col1 int NULL,
Col2 varchar(50) NULL)
GO

IF EXISTS (SELECT *
FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS
WHERE TABLE_CATALOG= 'TestDB'
AND TABLE_NAME ='TestTable'
AND COLUMN_NAME= 'Fred')

INSERT TestTable
(Col1, Col2, Fred)
VALUES
(1,'test', 'fredvalue')

This results in an "Unknown column" error.
What am I missing here and how can I accomplish it.
I know that I COULD build a SQL string and Exec it, but that is such a PITA and not very elegant.

Any help would be appreciated

Conditional Bulk Insert

Sep 19, 2007

Hi

I am doing bulk insert as follows. The @lastUpdate, @filePath, @formatFile comes as a parametes to stored proc

INSERT INTO Categories
SELECT CategoryId, @LastUpdate FROM OPENROWSET
(

BULK @filePath ,
FORMATFILE = @formatFile,
FIRSTROW =2
)
AS a
This works fine for me.

But my new requirement is that i shouldn't insert the CategoryId if it exists

How can we have conditional bulk insert? i am using Bulk insert as the file might have millions of category Ids.

Please provide your inputs that executes much faster

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Insert / Update Triggers When Insert Run Via Script

Oct 23, 2014

I'm working on inserting data into a table in a database. The table has two separate triggers, one for insert and one for update (I don't like it this way, but that's how it's been for years). When there is a normal insert, done via a program, it looks like the triggers work fine. When I run an insert manually via a script, the first insert trigger will run, but the update trigger will fail. I narrowed down the issue to a root cause.

This root issue is due to both triggers using the same temporary table name. When the second trigger runs, there's an error stating that a few columns don't exist. I went to my test server and test db and changed the update trigger so that the temporary table is different than the insert trigger temporary table, the triggers work fine. The weird thing is that if the temporary table already exists, when the second trigger tries to create the temporary table, I would expect it to fail and say that it already exists.I'm probably just going to update the trigger tonight and change the temporary table name.

Conditional Insert In SQL Server 2000?

Oct 17, 2005

I need to do a conditional insert, and I am afraid that if I do it in 2 steps it will create bugs...I have a table called customers and a table called lockscustomers has 3 fields CustomerID, FirstName, and LastNamelocks has fields LockID, CustomerID, UserID, SessionID, and TimeStampI need to check if there are any records in Locks for a CustomerID and if there are none, I need to insert One.This is going to tell my application that this Customer record is locked so no one else can edit it, until the Lock record is deleted.I just don't want to make 2 trips, One to check if the Lock exists, then One to insert the Lock, since this could allow 2 locks to be created if the timing is correct.Any ideas or comments?

Best Practice For Conditional Insert Else Select?

Aug 7, 2007

I have several places where I need to get the id (primary key) of a resource, inserting a row if the resource does not exist (i.e. an artificial key to be used as an FK for another table). I should probably change this varchar key lookup to use a hash index, but that is beside the point.

So the table is essentially like:
CREATE TABLE MyLookup(id int identity primary key nonclustered, mykey varchar(256));
CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX mylookup_cidx_mykey ON MyLookup(mykey);

I see two main approaches for how I can do my get-id-with-insert-if-needed.

(Approach 1)
DECLARE @id INT;
SELECT @id = id FROM MyLookup WHERE mykey = 'some key value';
IF (@id is null)
BEGIN

INSERT MyLookup ('some key value');
SET @id = SCOPE_IDENTITY();
END

(Approach 2)
DECLARE @id INT;
INSERT MyLookup SELECT 'some key value' WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT id FROM MyLookup WHERE mykey = 'some key value');
IF (@@ROWCOUNT = 0)

SELECT @id = id FROM MyLookup WHERE mykey = 'some key value';
ELSE

SET @id = SCOPE_IDENTITY();

From some quick tests in profiler, approach 2 seems to be a bit faster and have lower resource utilization. But I'm not sure if it maybe takes some more aggressive locks even in the unnecessary case where the mykey row value of 'some key value' already exists. Approach 2 also looks cleaner to me, but I don't mind a bit of extra code if it gives me better scalability through less lock contention.

Any tip on what is considered the best practice for a conditional insert like this, or a tip on how to get detailed lock info for a query? The lock info for profiler was all greek to me, it just had a hex value with each lock acquired/released, so I have no idea what it was telling me. Is my only solution to just run exhaustive tests and look at the perf numbers from the black box?

Insert Into Table, Query && Union Question...

Apr 17, 2007

i am do the following:
insert into table_a
([field1a], [field2a], [field3a])
select field1b, field2b, field3b from tableb
where datefield1b >= {variable datefield1} and datefield1b <= {variable datefield2}
which is working.
HOWEVER, i need to add/include 1 more record from tableb.
My first inclination is to do a UPDATE to add that first record BUT i am wondering if there is a way to do a UNION to get that record?
i need the next 1 RECORD that has a datefield1b value that is < {variable datefield1}
so if my date range is 01/01/2007 thru 12/31/2007 i need to also include the previous 1 record from tableb that is < 01/01/2007. that date could be from 1 month to 24 months old. I don't want all those records because there could be a whole lot of them in there.

GridView Based On SQLServerDataSource Using A Select Union Statement, Impacts On Update And Insert?

Jan 3, 2006

I have a GridView dispalying from a SQLServerDataSource that is using a SQL Select Union statement (like the following):

SELECT    FirstName,    LastNameFROM    MasterUNION ALLSELECT    FirstName,    LastNameFROM    CustomORDER BY    LastName,    FirstName
I am wondering how to create Update and Insert statements for this SQLServerDataSource since the select is actually driving from two different tables (Master and Custom).  Any ideas if or how this can be done?  Specifically, I want the Custom table to be editable, but not the Master table.  Any examples or ideas would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
