T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Adding N Prefix In Update Statement In Order To Store The Text Correctly?

The FirstName and LastName values being passed in are in cyrillic text.

How do I add the N prefix in the update statement in order to store the text correctly.

I've tried FirstName = N@Firstname

or FirstName = '''N''' + @FirstName + '''

@PersonId char(9),
@OriginalSID char(9),
@FirstName Varchar(50),
@LastName Varchar(50),

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Select Statement With Derived Order Status

Aug 28, 2015

Here is my requirement

Table 1 Order
order ID, Sales order ID order date, order type

Table 2 Order details
Order Details ID, Order ID, Order Stage

Table 3 Related Order details
Order ID(FK to Order ID), Related Order Details ID(FK to Order Details ID), Related Order ID( FK to Order ID)

Here is example

Table 1 Order
1, 1234, 2015-01-01, Refill
2, 1234, 2015-02-02, Extension

Table 2 Order Details
1, 1, Approved
2, 1, Approved
3, 2, Rejected

Table 3 Related Order Details
2, 1, 1
2, 2, 1

I have to Select Order, Order Details and Order Status

Order Status is determined from Order Stage as follows:

If, at least one order detail line(from Order Details and Related Order details table) is approved, that Order status=Approved.

For the example, Order Status of Order ID=2, is Approved based on order status for order details lines 3(from table 2) and order details ID 1 and 2 (from table 3)

How to combined order stage from table 2 and table 3 and then compute order status.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Update With Case Statement Not Working?

May 29, 2014

I have a situation where I want to update a column if and only if it is null.

UPDATE Employee
SET VEmployeeID = CASE WHEN E.VEmployeeID IS NULL
THEN ves.VEmployeeID
END
FROM Employee E
INNER JOIN VEmployeeStaging VES
ON E.EID= VES.EID

But what happens is when I run the procedure every other time I run it, it changes everything to null. The other times it puts the VEmployeeID in.

So what is happening is the times when it is not null (where it is not supposed to do anything) it puts a null in. The next time it works.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Generate Dynamic Update Statement

Aug 14, 2014

I'm trying to generate an update statement based off select statement results. A very basic example,

SELECT ListID FROM DListing WHERE Status = 2Results return 3 rows.
1234
2345
3456

How can I take those results and turn them into WHERE criteria for UPDATE statement?

Generated UPDATE statement should look like this.

UPDATE DListing SET Status = 1 WHERE ListID IN (1234,2345,3456)

I have started by creating a temp table to hold my SELECT results, but I don't know how to get those results into format for IN condition. Right now I get 3 UPDATE statements with 1 ListID in each IN condition.

CREATE TABLE #TempStatusUpdate(ListID INT)
INSERT INTO #TempStatusUpdate
SELECT ListID FROM DListing WHERE Status = 2
SELECT 'UPDATE DListing SET Status = 1 WHERE ListID IN (' + CONVERT(VARCHAR(30),ListID) + ') AND Status = 2'
DROP TABLE #TempStatusUpdate

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Script To Update Existing Full Text Catalog?

Mar 17, 2015

Have installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (includes SSMS tool) on Windows server 2008 R2 sp1 without any issues.Database created with no issues, full text catalog created via the wizard also with no issues but cannot run the process as a scheduled task of updating the catalog because the SQL agent is not available in the express version.

The full text index information is already being populated and updated by a third party application so this leaves just the catalog to be updated as and when new full text information is available.

I have a third party SQL scheduler which will run SQL scheduled tasks but requires a script to run the full text catalog update process

Is it possible to extract a script from the existing full text catalog to run the update process or how to create a script from scratch to do the same update catalog process in the third party scheduler?

Currentversion Property Not Set Correctly When Adding To Package

Feb 22, 2008

Hello all

I have a ssis component that begins like below. I recently added a new customproperty to the package and needed a way to detect when an upgrade from an old version was needed. As per microsofts directions I tried to use the currentversion property for this. This seemed to work fine until I noticed that newly added component to the dataflow keep starting at version 0 and going thru an upgrade making an duplicate of the new property. As below the new version has currentversion = 2 as a property. So why is this ignored. Or how do i make a component start out with the proper version so no upgrades happen?

Code Snippet
namespace itworkz.ssis.CustomComponents

[DtsPipelineComponent(
DisplayName = "ODS Tool v2",
Description = "proccess data for the operational data store",
ComponentType = ComponentType.Transform,

How To Correctly Update A Table Which Values Can Be Either Inserted/updated/deleted On Update?

Feb 16, 2006

Hi SQL fans,I realized that I often encounter the same situation in a relationdatabase context, where I really don't know what to do. Here is anexample, where I have 2 tables as follow:__________________________________________ | PortfolioTitle|| Portfolio |+----------------------------------------++-----------------------------+ | tfolio_id (int)|| folio_id (int) |<<-PK----FK--| tfolio_idfolio (int)|| folio_name (varchar) | | tfolio_idtitle (int)|--FK----PK->>[ Titles]+-----------------------------+ | tfolio_weight(decimal(6,5)) |+-----------------------------------------+Note that I also have a "Titles" tables (hence the tfolio_idtitlelink).My problem is : When I update a portfolio, I must update all theassociated titles in it. That means that titles can be either removedfrom the portfolio (a folio does not support the title anymore), addedto it (a new title is supported by the folio) or simply updated (atitle stays in the portfolio, but has its weight changed)For example, if the portfolio #2 would contain :[ PortfolioTitle ]id | idFolio | idTitre | poids1 2 1 102 2 2 203 2 3 30and I must update the PortfolioTitle based on these values :idFolio | idTitre | poids2 2 202 3 352 4 40then I should1 ) remove the title #1 from the folio by deleting its entry in thePortfolioTitle table2 ) update the title #2 (weight from 30 to 35)3 ) add the title #4 to the folioFor now, the only way I've found to do this is delete all the entriesof the related folio (e.g.: DELETE TitrePortefeuille WHERE idFolio =2), and then insert new values for each entry based on the new givenvalues.Is there a way to better manage this by detecting which value has to beinserted/updated/deleted?And this applies to many situation :(If you need other examples, I can give you.thanks a lot!ibiza

Adding A Full Text Search Across Multiple Tables (with Text Fields)

Sep 7, 2007

Hi, i'm trying to do a full text search on my site to add a weighting score to my results. I have the following database structure:
Documents: - DocumentID (int, PK) - Title (varchar) - Content (text) - CategoryID (int, FK)
Categories: - CategoryID (int, PK) - CategoryName (varchar)
I need to create a full text index which searches the Title, Content and CategoryName fields. I figured since i needed to search the CategoryName field i would create an indexed view. I tried to execute the following query:
CREATE VIEW vw_DocumentsWITH SCHEMABINDING ASSELECT dbo.Documents.DocumentID, dbo.Documents.Title, dbo.Documents.[Content], dbo.Documents.CategoryID, dbo.Categories.CategoryNameFROM dbo.Categories INNER JOIN dbo.Documents ON dbo.Categories.CategoryID = dbo.Documents.CategoryID
GOCREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX vw_DocumentsIndexON vw_Documents(DocumentID)
But this gave me the error:
Cannot create index on view 'dbname.dbo.vw_Documents'. It contains text, ntext, image or xml columns.
I tried converting the Content to a varchar(max) within my view but it still didn't like.
Appreciate if someone can tell me how this can be done as surely what i'm trying to do is not ground breaking.

Sysperfinfo Doesn't Update Counters Correctly. Help!!!

Mar 22, 2001

I'm using a performance monitor counter with an alert to catch merge replication conflicts. As you might have seen in my earlier psting this alert keeps running even if all conflicts have been resolved. After almost 2 days searching I found that in the table master..sysperfinfo there all the PM counters are stored still has the value 4 for conflicts/sec. When I manually create a new conflict this value becomes 5 which is nonsense since it's not the number of conflicts per second but the total number of conflicts since I started the server. If I check in PM it shows the correct value, whih of course is zero 99% of the time. Has anybody ever experienced the same kind of problem??

Or does anybody know a way of resetting the values in sysperfinfo. Even after allowing direct updates to systemtables I still can't modify the table.

Thanks in advance

Error Msg 6522, Level 16, State 1 Receives When Call The Assembly From Store Procedure To Create A Text File And To Write Text

Jun 21, 2006

Hi,
I want to create a text file and write to text it by calling its assembly from Stored Procedure. Full Detail is given below

I write a code in class to create a text file and write text in it.
1) I creat a class in Visual Basic.Net 2005, whose code is given below:
Imports System
Imports System.IO
Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic
Imports System.Diagnostics
Public Class WLog
Public Shared Sub LogToTextFile(ByVal LogName As String, ByVal newMessage As String)
Dim w As StreamWriter = File.AppendText(LogName)
LogIt(newMessage, w)
w.Close()
End Sub
Public Shared Sub LogIt(ByVal logMessage As String, ByVal wr As StreamWriter)
wr.Write(ControlChars.CrLf & "Log Entry:")
wr.WriteLine("(0) {1}", DateTime.Now.ToLongTimeString(), DateTime.Now.ToLongDateString())
wr.WriteLine(" :")
wr.WriteLine(" :{0}", logMessage)
wr.WriteLine("---------------------------")
wr.Flush()
End Sub
Public Shared Sub LotToEventLog(ByVal errorMessage As String)
Dim log As System.Diagnostics.EventLog = New System.Diagnostics.EventLog
log.Source = "My Application"
log.WriteEntry(errorMessage)
End Sub
End Class

2) Make & register its assembly, in SQL Server 2005.
3)Create Stored Procedure as given below:

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.SP_LogTextFile
(
@LogName nvarchar(255), @NewMessage nvarchar(255)
)
AS EXTERNAL NAME
[asmLog].[WriteLog.WLog].[LogToTextFile]

4) When i execute this stored procedure as
Execute SP_LogTextFile 'C:Test.txt','Message1'

5) Then i got the following error

Here is my Stored Procedure creation sql:

CREATE PROCEDURE sps_searchTitles(@searchTerm varchar(255)) AS

--- The above does not appear to properly check both prefix ("Term---") and suffix ("---ator") terms.

Adding Text To A TEXT Field (MS-SQL2000)

May 9, 2007

Hi everyone,

I'm extremely new to SQL so be nice

I am attempting to write a script to add onto the end of a text field the words " -- Disposed " (About 60 rows worth).
The field is a TEXT field, so unlike a varchar field I can't just use Update as shown below.

Code:

Update AR_Primary_asset
Set AR_Primary_asset.description = AR_Primary_asset.description + ' -- Disposed'
Where AR_Primary_Asset.ASSET_REF in ('1','2','4')

I found on the Mircosoft pages about UPDATETEXT, but this only seem to work to update one row (In the case below Asset_ref = 3, was the only row effected) .

Code:

DECLARE @Dispose binary(16)
SELECT @Dispose = TEXTPTR(DESCRIPTION)
FROM AR_PRIMARY_ASSET
WHERE AR_Primary_Asset.ASSET_REF in ('1','2','3')

UPDATETEXT AR_PRIMARY_ASSET.DESCRIPTION @ptrval null null ' -- Disposed'

So i wrapped it into a cursor, this worked on my test SQL server which runs SQL2005.

Code:

DECLARE @Dispose varbinary(16)

DECLARE cursor1 CURSOR FOR
SELECT TEXTPTR(DESCRIPTION)
FROM AR_Primary_Asset
Where AR_Primary_Asset.ASSET_REF in('1','2','3')

OPEN cursor1

FETCH NEXT FROM cursor1
INTO @Dispose

WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN

UPDATETEXT AR_Primary_Asset.DESCRIPTION @Dispose NULL NULL ' -- Disposed'

FETCH NEXT FROM cursor1
INTO @Dispose
END

CLOSE cursor1
DEALLOCATE cursor1

But when it was run on our SQL2000 server it gave the following error message

Quote: Msg 403, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Invalid operator for data type. Operator equals add, type equals text.

I've never used vars, cursors, updatetext or even text fields before. So maybe I am going about it totally the wrong way.

Is anyone able to tell me a better way to write this? or how to make it compatible to SQL2000?

Adding Columns In A Certain Order

Nov 20, 2000

I am familiar with the ALTER TABLE syntax that can be used to add columns to an existing table, but the columns are appended to the end of the table. Enterprise Manager allows you to insert a column in the desired place in the table, but I suspect that behind the scenes it creates a temp table with the new structure, drops the old version of the table and renames the temp table to the orginal table name (I could be wrong on this).

Is there a way to insert a new column in a specific place in a table using SQL rather than EM?

What Is The Best Way To Store A Shopping List Or Order?

Oct 17, 2006

After a customer decides to buy a shopping list, there is generally aneed to store/insert one master record and a variable number of childdetail records, preferably all wrapped in a transaction. There are lotsof ways to do this and I am wondering if anyone knows which is mostefficient.One approach is to use ADO.NET's transaction capabilities, definesingle-record insert procs for the master and detail tables, and callthe detail insert in a loop from the web page. This has N+1 trips tothe server, which is not too attractive.Another approach is to concatenate all the data into a bigstring/varchar variable and pass it to a decoder proc that would thencall the single record insert procs via a loop inside the decoder proc.This second approach would use T-SQL's transaction capability and haveonly one trip to the server, but it is more effort to code on the webpage and in the decoder proc.Surely this is a common problem. Are there any more elegant/efficientmethods that anyone can suggest? Can one pass an array to a proc? Isthis a place for a user defined data type?Any advice is much appreciated.

Adding Order By On Clustered Index

Jul 20, 2005

Hi allI recently noticed when trying to optimise a major query of a chess websiteI am the webmaster of, that adding an order by for "gamenumber" which is aclustered index field as in for example "order by timeleft desc, gamenumberdesc" actually speeded up the queries and reduced sql server 2000 timeouts.I have an ASP error log and I am fairly sure that a dramatic reduction insql server timeouts is simply attributed to adding an extra seeminglyredundant order by field - which is the clustered index. Is this phenomenaat all possible or is it my imagination?!Other special attributes of the query includes the use of "Top" to obtain amaximum specified number of rows. Perhaps it is just the uniquecharacteristics of the query, but I would have thought that the less orderby fields would imply faster performance. Has anyone else noticed that aseemingly redundant order by column on for example the clustered indexcolumn, can actually help speed up queries?!Best wishesTryfon GavrielWebmasterwww.chessworld.net

WhiteSydney 6548521007562 10.65

HOWEVER I need it to look like the following:

NameCity Client NoAccount No BalanceAccount No Balance

BrownPerth 9876541000879 5.461000880 7.51
WhiteSydney 6548521007562 10.65

The requirement is that if the Client No is the same that the Account No and Balance appear on the same row but just additional columns. There is no restriction on how many extra columns there would be.

Once the query is working it needs to go into Visual Studio so that the report can be set up as a subscription.

In What Order Does A Clustered Index Store Data?

Mar 26, 2007

Hi

I was going through the book by Kalen Delaney where she has mentioned the following paragpraph in Chapter 7 (Index Internals):

Many documents describing SQL Server indexes will tell you that the clustered index physically stores the data in sorted order. This can be misleading if you think of physical storage as the disk itself. If a clustered index had to keep the data on the actual disk in a particular order, it could be prohibitively expensive to make changes. If a page got too full and had to be split in two, all the data on all the succeeding pages would have to be moved down. Sorted order in a clustered index simply means that the data page chain is logically in order.

Then I read the book on SQL Server 2000 (on Perf Tuning) by Ken England. He says the clustered index stores data in physical order and any insert means moving the data physically. Also the same statement is echoed on the net by many articles.

What is the truth? How are really clustered index stored? What does physical order in the above statement really mean?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Summing - Adding A Negative And A Positive

Mar 20, 2014

I have a query that brings in a result from a table that I have to display as a negative, so I use ABS (tbname.fieldname) *-1

This works fine. (Learnt it here from a previous post.)

I have another query that brings in a result from the same table but as a postive. So that works fine too.

Now, I need to sum them together in a new query. If the total value is a positive, fine. If the total value is a negative, it displays as a positive.

My question. Is it actually possible to achieve what I'm trying to do?

Output example below - narrow result for testing.

idpt2 Value2SumQty
N1141307-80970 3.80 2
N1141S2G00009D070 26.16 2

The 3.80 is correct, it is a positive.

The 26.16 is incorrect as it is the output from sum 235.44 -261.6 so I need it to display as -26.6

I am calling Store Procedure from my C# Code and inside the SP, I am calling my SSIS Package.It is working fine. On my local because I have all rights to run xp_cmdshell COMMAND. Now I have to transfer this SP to QA and Prod and I don't have rights to run xp_cmdshell COMMAND.

Here is my SP.

declare @cmd varchar(1000)
SET @ssispath = 'SSIS Package Path where my .dtsx package'
set @ExcelF = 'Passing My source file name and full path'

select @cmd = 'C:"program files (x86)""Microsoft SQL Server"100DTSBinnDTEXEC.exe /F "' + @ssispath + '"'
select @cmd = @cmd + ' /X86 /SET Package.Variables[User::ExcelF].Properties[Value];"' + @ExcelF + '" /X86 '
exec master..xp_cmdshell @cmd

My question is, is there other way to run/execute above Store Procedure/SSIS without XP_CMDSHELL Command?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Group By And Order By - Location Starting With A And B

Jul 7, 2014

I am having below schema.

CREATE TABLE #Turnover (
location varchar(50),
Total int
)

insert into #Turnover (location,Total) values('A', 500)
insert into #Turnover (location,Total) values('AB', 200)
insert into #Turnover (location,Total) values('ABC', 100)
insert into #Turnover (location,Total) values('BA', 100)
insert into #Turnover (location,Total) values('BAC', 500)
insert into #Turnover (location,Total) values('BAM', 100)

Now i want output order by total but same time i want to create two groups. i.e. location starting with A and order by total and after locations starting with B and order by total.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Order By Numeric Doesn't Work

Sep 26, 2014

the select statement in the join orders the numbers asc and if you run everything below the case statement it works, but as you run the whole thing the order is no longer there.

I need the order to work. What am I missing?

--Assign Intern's students

Update tblObjectType3_14
Set [FldNumeric23764]= case when tID = 1 and Q.n <= 100 then 2
when tID = 2 and Q.n <= 150 then 2
when tID = 3 and Q.n <= 150 then 2
when tID = 4 and Q.n <= 130 then 2

[code]....
