Now Sql Function can not modify data as Sql Procedure like other database, it's very troublesome at most case!
in most case, Sql Function is used to improve code structure then it can be maintanced easy! BUT only because it can not modify data, there are 2 troublesome way:

1. Make all callers in the path from Sql Functions to Sql Procedure. and the coder will cry, the code will become very
confusional , and very difficult to maintance.

2. Divide the Sql Function into a thin CLR wrapper to call a Sql Procedure, can only use another connection, BUT can not be in the same transaction context And the code is ugly and slow.

You should not give limitation to Sql Function, should just limit the using context of Sql Function!

The sql code is more difficult to read and maintance than norm code(C#), then the improving code structure and readability should be one of your most important task, that's why microsoft!

In the msdn SQL server document(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa172573(SQL.80).aspx), it states:

Transact-SQL cursors can specify the FAST_FORWARD clause on DECLARE CURSOR. This opens an optimized forward-only, read-only cursor.

But in the following section 'Implicit Conversion of Fast Forward-only Cursors', it states:

If a fast forward-only cursor is not read-only, it is converted to a dynamic cursor.

Now I am confused: is it possible to make a fast forward-only cursor 'not read-only'(updatable)?

A fast forward-only cursor by definition is read-only. Am I wrong?

I am trying to fill my table in different levels (hierarchy). The different levels are not properly processed. All layers now have the same value. It is intended that the layers are beaten flat. This implies multiple joins in order to be able to get the different levels.

'Ledgertableinterval' could be used to determine the hierarchy, but I did not come all the way out ...

So my suggestion is to fill with 1 character level 1, level 2 with 2 character and so on. If a level is not available anymore than filling up with higher level. For this you can use the replace function.

So effectively i have a table of names of stored procedures. I now have a store proc that loops around these procs and runs each one in order.

Now i am thinking i would like to be able to set the table it loops around in a variable at the start - is it possible to do this? So effectively use a tablename in a variable to use in the sql to define a cursor?

Multiple While Fetch Cursor Code

I seem to have a few problems with the below double cursor procedure. Probably due to the fact that I have two while loops based on fetch status. Or???

What I want to do is select out a series of numbers in medlemmer_cursor(currently set to only one number, for which I know I get results) and for each of these numbers select their MCPS code and gather these in a single string.

For some reason the outpiut (the insert into statement) returns the correct number 9611 but the second variable @instrumentlinje remains empty.

If I test the select clause for 9611, it gets 4 lines. So to me its like the "SELECT @instrumentlinje = @instrumentlinje + ' ' + @instrument" statement doesn't execute.

I don't understand using a dynamic cursor.

Summary
* The fetch next statement returns multiple rows when using a dynamic cursor on the sys.dm_db_partition_stats.
* As far as I know a fetch-next-statement always returns a single row?
* Using a static cursor works as aspected.
* Works on production OLTP as well as on a local SQL server instance.

Now the Skript to reproduce the whole thing.

Why does the fetch statement return more than 1 row? It returns the whole result of the select-statement. When using a STATIC cursors instead I get the first row of the cursor as I would expect. Selecting a "normal" user table using a dynamic cursor I get the first row only, again as expected.

I am trying to think of a way to read a control table, build the SQL statement for each line, and then execute them all, without using a cursor.

To make it simple... control table would look like this:

I get the error message as An INSERT EXEC statement cannot be nested when I execute if for Multiple Companies using another Cursor

Code Is Getting Compiled Even Columns Are Not Matching In Cursor Declaration

I have some stored procedure and there is a cursor inside it. I added some new columns to the table and those columns I included in the cursor declaration and fetch statement. In the cursor declaration I forgot to add comma (,) in between the new columns. So SQL Server it considers as a alias name for that column so syntactically it is correct. But logically in the cursor declaration having less number of columns than the columns in the fetch statement. So it should throw an error. But the procedure is getting compiled without raising any error. But if I execute the procedure that time it is throwing the error.

For example, below I have given the sample procedure. In this procedure, in the cursor declaration I removed the comma (,) between DOB and DOJ. If I compile this procedure it is getting compiled. But when execute that time only it is throwing the error. So I am interested in if any option is available to know the error in the compilation time itself.

I want to identify the list of alt codes available in the table.
