TCP/IP Settings In SQL Server 2005

Mar 17, 2008

I recently installed SQL Server on a machine running Windows Server 2003. Before it was on my desktop. When I checked the TCP/IP settings under configuration manager, I noticed it doesnt have anything for my IP address. I just have a entry for the 127.0.01 loopback address. I know when I had it installed on my desktop there was a entry for my IP address. Is this ok or did something go wrong and it didnt set the IP address? I can still login and access the databases fine from Managament Studio.

Also would it better to have the services run as a network service or a local service?

Memory Settings In SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition

Nov 9, 2007

Hi,

I'm having trouble finding the optimum memory settings for SQL Server 2005. I have 4 instances running on a macine with 8 dual-core processors and 18GB of RAM. I have tried the following memory settings so far:

No maximum - one instance used about 12GB of RAM so then the others struggled
Maximum of 4GB each (2GB left for Windows) - meant that 3 instances could be using 1GB each and then another at 4GB and needing more whilst 9GB sat unused.
Minimum of 2GB each - one instance would use up 10GB and then never give any back to the other instances.

I also find that setting a maximum then just causes a high amount of paging. What I would like to do is have each instance use a minimum amount, say 1GB, and then have each instance use a maximum of 13GB (3GB for other 3 instances running at a minimum level and 2GB for Windows). This 13GB should then be released and allocated to another instance when necessary, assuming it is no longer all being used. I do not want paging to occur if an instance reaches 13GB.

How do I go about configuring SQL Server to behave like this? Is it possible?

Thanks.

An Error Has Occurred While Establishing A Connection To The Server. When Connecting To SQL Server 2005, This Failure May Be Caused By The Fact That Under The Default Settings SQL Server Does Not Allow Remote Connections.

Jan 22, 2008

My site works fine in VWD2008 express, but I get this error when I try to use it on my live website.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
According to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277  I am supposed to:

1.
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Ok, there is no such program in this folder.  The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this:  All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication.  I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

Mar 2, 2008

My environment:

Home PC
Vista Ultimate
SQL Server Developer 2005

I'm about to go absolutely nuts. I've tried so many things including:

1) Of course making sure Remote connections and both TCP/IP and named pipes are enabled for SQL 2005
2) Verified my connection string works. I even tested it in Enterprise Library using the tool and it connects successfully via windows authentication
3) Made sure of course my logged in user is a member of the administrator group and that my user in SQL 2005 logins has db_owner and full rights to the DB I am connecting to. I also made sure the NT AUTHORITY as well as the 3 sql service users have db_owner rights as well as the adminstrator in the SQL Server logins all have db_owner to the DB
4) Started the SQL Server Browser service, SQL Server DB engine, and SQL Server Agent
5) Made sure my site is setup right in IIS 7. I checked the connection string in there as well as it shows up in IIS7 in one of the sections. Using Windows authentication and it is enabled for my site
6) Tried running the .net site using both localhost (IIS) and also tried using the Visual Studio built-in web server. Both give this message still

Server 2003 Running Sql Server 2005. Regional Settings Are Different From All Others We Have; Can We Safely Change It?

Oct 18, 2007

Hi
We have a bunch of servers running server 2000 & 2003 along with many sql server (versions 2000 & 2005) databases in a production environment pulling transactions then doing warehousing & reporting.

An audit has shown up 1 production server using English_US 'mmddyyyy' system date formats, all others being English_Australian 'ddmmyyyy'.

Is it safe to simply change the regional settings on this English_US server to English_Australian or will it mess up the data in our SQL 2005 databases? I've not been able to get a definitive answer from anyone yet!

many thanks in advance; GaryP

Jan 22, 2008

When my default.aspx page loads I get this error for the connection to my SQL 2005 DB.    An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that
under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL
Server) I have already gone to Surface Area Configuration to ensure that Remoting with both Named Pipes or TCP/IP is enabled and it's set to both for remoting.I verified that my local account has access to the DB.Not sure what else to check.

Dec 10, 2007

I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it.  Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error.  Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing.  I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do.  I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled.  I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss.  I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error.  I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

2005 X64 Cluster - Memory Settings

Apr 17, 2008

So I'm in the middle of building SQL Server 2005 on my new cluster hardware. I've got all the goodies this time around -4x PowerEdge 68004x dual core x64 procs in each box32GB ram in each boxWindows Server 2k3 R2 Enterprise x64 SP2SQL 2005 Enterprise x64 SP2Active Active Active Passive cluster (4 boxes, 3 instances)dedicated data, log, and tempDB 4Gb 15k fiber channel SAN Volumes for each instanceNow, this is the first x64 box I've configured, so I'm looking for some optimization tips for a couple things.First one's memory. On our 32bit systems, I always added the /PAE switch to the boot.ini file and enable AWE in SQL Server. From what I'm reading, that's no longer needed with the enhanced memory addressing. Is that the case? Is there an MS best practices KB doc in regards to configuration? I can't find one. Also, should I set anything special pagefile-wise? I know the old mantra is 1.5x system memory, but that would create a 48GB page file. Our current cluster has 6GB of ram dedicated to each instance (2k) and Perfmon tells me it's barely touching the pagefile. I'm thinking of just leaving it default, but I want to know if there is a best practice that I'm missing. Again, I can't find an MS doc that addresses this particular scenario.

Optimizing TCP-IP Settings For 2005 Version?

May 12, 2008

I see in several recommendations I found from searching for answers why we were losing the connection to the database. One of these was tweaking the Network Interface Card to ensure it is set to 1024 in the registery. Another was twaeking the TCP-IP setting for windows under

HKey_Local_machineSystemCurrentControlSet02ServicesTCPIPParameters.

Most of these did not mentioned SQL Server 2005. I wondering if someone of more experience with SQL Server 2005 than I can address if this action is required in the newer version.

Thanks for any feedback,

SSRS 2005 VD And IIS Config/settings Problem

Dec 3, 2007

We have SSRS 2005. The install put virtual directories under the website we wanted. We upgraded from Standard to Enterprise, and I put in virtual directories under the default web site so that the upgrade would work just fine. It did.

So, now I have 2 web addresses accessing the same database backend and the same files/folders on the same web server.

Someone added a mapping for .jsx extension and chose select all in the next dialog box and Reporting Services (under that web site) has not worked since. However, the one under the default web site works perfectly well. That leads me to believe that the files are fine, and the connection to the database is fine. I have tried deploying a report and it works.

The error I get from the http://server/reports interface is: Unable to connect to remote server

The error I get from the log files (ReportServerWebApp_) is:

Since it works with the same files and database on the default web site, and not on the website I want it to, I figure its an IIS setting or config problem/issue. I have looked at all the settings in the Properties for both Reports and ReportServer for both websites, but dont see a difference. I have also looked at the settings in the Properties for both web sites and while I know there are a few differences, there should be. (I did try to set them the same just to know, and it still didnt work). I have also deleted and recreated my Virtual Directories under the website I want it to work, with no success.

Anyone have any other suggestions, or links, or anything?

Thanks!

Identity Field Settings Not Copied By Import Wizard (2005)

Feb 26, 2006

It appears that when you use the import/export wizard from within Microsoft SQL Server Managment Studio, the identity attributes of the table being copied are not transferred. For example, say the source table has a column

[ref] [int] IDENTITY ( 1 , 1 ) NOT NULL,

When the import wizard is done the destination table will have a column named ref, but will not be an identity column. The column definition will be

[ref] [int] NOT NULL,

instead. Is there a way to change this behavior somewhere in the gui? When doing the import, the only options seems to be 'Enable Identity Insert', but checking this does not affect the definition of the column.

Error When Trying To Change Server Settings

Aug 4, 2004

I am trying to connect to a SQL Server machine using SQL security instead of integrgated security. However, the server was setup initially to use only integrated security. When I right click on the server and select properties, I get this error:

Error 0: Cannot load the DLL xpstar.dll, or one of the DLLs it references. Reason: 5(Access is denied.).

I googled this error but could not find a single solution. The dll will not register with regsvr32. Do I need to repair SQL Server and then re-run the latest service pack, or is there a simple solution?

Thanks,

Changing SQL Server Agent Settings On The Fly?

Mar 19, 2007

Hello all,

I have created a simple package that imports data from a flat file into a database. To run the package I'm using a SQL Server Agent Job. The location of the file is stored as a connection string in the Connection Managers tab in the SQL Server Agent Job.

Is there a way to change this connection string programmatically? If not programmatically, is there a way to change this setting right before I execute the package. I want to change the location of this file based on user input. Also, I'm executing the package using the sp_start_job stored procedure to run the job.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Memory Settings In 32-bit SQL Server On 64-bit Windows.

Dec 25, 2007

Hi all,

We have SQL Server 2005 Entp 32-bit on Windows Server 2003 Entp.Edtion 64-bit. ( Total memory = 16 Gb)

1) So, in this case , do i need to enable AWE Configuration from SQL Server Side ( 32-bit).

And what settings( AWE, /PAE) i should enable on OS (i.e.) on Windows Server 2003 (64-bit) in boot.ini file.
Because right now, i dont see any switches in boot.ini file.

2) And with 16 GB of RAM, what should be the ideal setting for memory ( Min & Max).

Default Settings SQL Server Does Not Allow Remote Connections

Apr 16, 2008

Please help a teacher at wit's end.
I have created a site using Microsoft Expression Web.  The site includes a create user page on which I placed the create user control (wizard), and a login page (which houses a login control) .  When the site sits on my local host all works well and I render the pages on my browser locally: the first time a user is created the aspnetdb.mdf file is automatically created into my app_data folder, the new user information is saved and can be accessed on the login page etc.  However,  when I upload to my hosting server. (godaddy) I can navigate to each of these pages seamlessly but when I try to use the controls on either page I get similar errors:

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
I am not a programmer, and am just beginning to learn asp.net.  However, I need to solve this problem.  GoDaddy cannot help me, they say, because this is inside of EW and that is a MS problem.  They have on the several ocassions I have contacted them, suggested compatibility issues (since they use SQL server 2003 and 2008 not 2005, or suggest that I need to script something to ensure that the .mdf file is recognized by their server, or that it was a database problem and that I may need a database programmer. They did tell me that it is important to note that the databases are hosted outside their server. I have not found anything in the EW side of this equation since most forums and support etc, deal more with the design part, than the online publishing part.  I have tried to find a programmer locally that could help me, and have yet to find one.  I am so close to being able to publish a site that meets our small school's needs, but cannot jump this one hurdle.  Can anyone tell me what I can do?
Any help will be appreciated.

DB Engine :: MAX And MIN Server Memory Settings For 2012?

Sep 8, 2015

We have a new set up on VM to run an application running 24*7 (migrated from SQL server 2008R2) with below configs:

1. OS- Windows server 2012 Standard 64 bit hosted on Virtual Machine

2. Memory 16 GB and Cores =4 with 2.4GhZ processor

3. SQL server 2012 SP2 , 64 bit Standard edition.

4. Total size of databases as of now 15 GB with biggest being 5 GB.

How should i go around in setting the MAX and MIN server memory settings. I have this set up for many of SQL 2005 and 2008R2 servers, but for 2012 i heard that things has slightly changed.

How should i start analyzing and setting the right value of this MAX and MIN?

SQL Server 2008 :: Database Level Selection Settings?

Apr 23, 2015

I have following table structure

SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[FAS_LEDGER](
[TID] [INT] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[TDATE] [DATETIME] NOT NULL,

[code].....

in this table I have 1571182 rows

the problem is someone did some changes in this LEDGER table

I can insert new rows in this table but when I try to fetch latest rows on the basis of following query then I did not get the latest row.

means

following query gives all the rows of this table

SELECT * FROM dbo.FAS_LEDGER ORDER BY TID DESC

and when I try to filter Master_code = '02-07-01-008-0001' and apply oder by TDATE I do not get latest rows

SELECT * FROM dbo.FAS_LEDGER WHERE MASTER_CODE = '02-07-01-008-0001'
ORDER BY TDATE DESC

SQL Server 2008 :: Script Out Database Mail Settings?

Sep 8, 2010

Script to Reverse Engineer / Script out your EXISTING database mail settings?

I set up a profile to use gMail, and it seems logical for me to export out the settings to a script, then run the script on my laptop, other servers, etc.

There's no built in option, so I figured i'd ping the forum before i do it myself.

There are example scripts where you fill in the blanks, examples how to set up dbmail, but i did not find anything that scripts out existing settings.

Save Custom Settings In SQL Server Management Studio Express

Apr 19, 2007

I use SQL Server Management Studio Express to work in several databases. What gets annoying, is that the databases I work in have 30+ tables in them, only 5-10 of which I actually work with. Then there's the stored procedures I have to sort through to find the ones that I need and so on. I set filters so that I see only what is applicable to me, but I hate having to set those filters every time I start Management Studio back up. Is there a way to save my settings so that it opens the same way every time? I've looked around and can't find an answer to this.

 Thanks!

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: 600 Instances Installed With Default Settings?

Mar 10, 2015

I am tasked with correcting 600 SQL Server instances default settings. I would like to use powershell, if possible to loop thorough each named instances (I have a list) and apply the following settings. I also need to query the server for the installed memory and apply * 80% logic for maxmem, and look at the VCPU count and adjust the MAXDOP to that number.

USE MASTER
GO
EXEC sp_configure 'recovery interval (min)', '0';
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE;
EXEC sp_configure 'allow updates', '0';
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE;
EXEC sp_configure 'user connections', '0';

[code].....

DB Engine :: Defining MAX And MIN Server Memory Settings On 2 Node Cluster

Sep 29, 2015

On first Node A: The server has 16 GB of physical RAM.
On second Node B: The server has 10 GB of physical RAM.

Now, this being Active Active, Node A can be clustered on failure onto Node B..Now reporting server is configured under these two nodes, with defined MAX and MIN server memory of 12 as MAX and 0 is min IN GB.Now with this setting on SQL whenever the cluster moves, such config make OS goes low on node for 10 GB.I am only left with option of switching this MAX and MIN to a default setting or is there any other alternative such as script which can change this setting accordingly when cluster moves to respective server.
