TRANSACTIONS In A WHILE LOOP. Flow Question
May 8, 2006
When I attempt to manage Transactions in a WHILE LOOP @@TRANCOUNT is
off. I obviously do not understand error handling as I should. In the
loop below where does the point of execution move to after an error?
RESULT:
Server: Msg 266, Level 16, State 1, Procedure flowcontrol_test, Line
111
Transaction count after EXECUTE indicates that a COMMIT or ROLLBACK
TRANSACTION statement is missing. Previous count = 0, current count =
1.
CREATE PROCEDURE flowcontrol_test
AS
-- EXECUTE SOME CODE
WHILE @current_Row <= @row_Count
BEGIN
IF BLAH -- Some Conditional
BEGIN
-- Do some other stuff
BEGIN TRAN tran_TEST
-- X Doesn't Exist. Where does the point of execution
go???
UPDATE X
SET update_dtm = @dateTimeStamp
WHERE v = @V
SET @errorCode = @@ERROR
IF @errorCode = 0
BEGIN
-- -- intentional error introduced. Where does
the point of execution go???
UPDATE tbl
SET field_with_noncompatible_data_type =
@dateTimeStamp
WHERE v = @V
SET @errorCode = @@ERROR
IF @errorCode = 0
BEGIN
-- intentional error introduced. Where does
the point of execution go???
DELETE FROM child
WHERE child key
EXISTS in parent table
SET @errorCode = @@ERROR
END
END
IF @errorCode = 0
COMMIT TRAN tran_TEST
ELSE
ROLLBACK TRAN tran_TEST
END
BLAH -- RESET SOME STUFF
END

I am running the following query, which deletes around 800 million rows from the table.
I would like to introduce transactions with in this code and also, if success entire deletion process should be committed and number of rows deleted, table name and success should be inserted to the log table.
If there is a failure, transaction should be rolled back and table name and error message should be inserted to the same log file
Select 1
While @@ROWCOUNT > 0
Begin
DELETE Top(100000) FROM [dbo].[Table1]
FROM [dbo].[Table2]
INNER JOIN [dbo].[Table3] ON [Table2].[PracticeID] = [Table3].[PracticeID]
INNER JOIN [dbo].[Table1] ON [Table3].[InputDevicePracticeID] = [Table1].[InputDevicePracticeID]
WHERE [Table2].PracticeID =55;
End
how to achieve this?

I am having a problem getting error rows to redirect between an OLE DB Source and an OLE DB Destination when using transactions. Each time I turn on the transaction control I get an error stating:
"[OLE DB Destination [48]] Error: The input "OLE DB Destination Input" (61) cannot be set to redirect on error using a connection in a transaction."
I get the above Error when using MSDTC. I have the data flow inside of a Sequence Container with the transaction option set to REQUIRED and the Isolation Level set to Serializable. I have tried all the Isolation levels.
I have the error rows piped off to a seperate OLE DB Destination. I have also tried using native SQL transactions with Execute SQL tasks to BEGIN, COMMIT or ROLLBACK the transaction. This does not work either. It looks like it works properly when the data flow is successful but using profiler I can see SSIS opens up a seperate process for the BEGIN and then another one with the Data Flow task. When I intentionally fail the Data Flow the Rollback always fails. I made sure I had RetainSameConnection turned on for the Connection I was using.
I am speculating that the Data Flow does not know what to Rollback the actual rows that succeeded or the error rows that are getting piped off.
I am fairly stumped on this one so any help is appreciated.
Thanks

how to pass the variables as the data source in data flow in for each loop( ADO enumerator)?

In my Control Flow, I execute a data flow that opens a flat file and populates the file into a recordset.
Back to my Control Flow, I have a ForEach container that uses a ForEach ADO Enumerator. Inside the ForEach, I execute an "Execute SQL Task" that updates a table.
This is where I'm confused, while in the ForEach, I also want to call a Data Flow and use the current record (record in my ForEach) and perform several lookup tasks. Unfortunately, I'm now sure how to use the ForEach record as a source in my Data Flow....What am I missing?
Thanks,
Gary

All:
I am sure I am missing something really silly but I am not able to figure out what. The For Each Loop uses an ADO Enumerator and passes variable values to a data flow. In executing the package the loop runs fine but nothing is happening to the data flow. When I move the data flow out of the loop it runs fine. What is going on?
Thanks!

Hopefully this is an easy question:
Inside of a for each loop (looping through an ADO record set of objects to import) I have a data flow task (along with many other processes).... if the dataflow task suceeds I log success in a table. If it errors I want it to fail the dataflow task (which will fire off my Event Handler for that data flow and log the failure, email etc) BUT I want it to continue the loop - I can't seem to figure out how to get the data flow object not to fail the whole loop. If any other objects inside the foreach, other than the data flow, fail I would like the whole loop to fail. Also if possible (but not a requirement) I would like it to have a threshold where if the data flow fails X variable times it will fail the package.
I am having difficulty how to not fail the loop when the import data fails..... just looking for a simple "on error next" type logic for that specific object in the foreach but not the rest. Thanks in advance for the help/advice.

I have a package that runs fine by itself. But when I run it inside a Foreach Loop container on a parent package, I got a buffer error after a few loops. Here are a couple of the error lines:
A buffer failed while allocating 49085616 bytes.
The attempt to add a row to the Data Flow task buffer failed with error code 0x8007000E.
I already played around with the Data Flow task€™s DefaultBufferMaxRows and DefaultBufferSize properties, and I am still getting the error. Just wondering if there is a memory leak or something with the Foreach Loop task. I haven€™t install SP1. Maybe SP1 fixes this issue?

Suppose if I have a “Foreach Loop Container” that iterates over a list. Is it possible to execute different data flow tasks based on the input?
Example : List contains elements L1, L2 & L3.
ForEach Loop Container checks the input. If its L1 then it should execute DF Task1, If L2 then execute
DF Task2 and similarly for L3.
Is it possible to achieve this?

Hi there,
I have decided to move all my transaction handling from asp.net to stored procedures in a SQL Server 2000 database. I know the database is capable of rolling back the transactions just like myTransaction.Rollback() in asp.net. But what about exceptions? In asp.net, I am used to doing the following:
<code>Try 'execute commands myTransaction.Commit()Catch ex As Exception Response.Write(ex.Message) myTransaction.Rollback()End Try</code>Will the database inform me of any exceptions (and their messages)? Do I need to put anything explicit in my stored procedure other than rollback transaction?
Any help is greatly appreciated

Hi, All,
I need to pass a parameter from control flow to data flow. The data flow will use this parameter to get data from a Oracle source.
I have an Execute SQL task in control flow to assign value to the Parameter, next step is a data flow which will need take a parameter in the SQL statement to query the Oracle source,
The SQL Looks like this:
select * from ccst_acctsys_account
where to_char(LAST_MODIFIED_DATE, 'YYYYMMDD') >?
THe problem is the OLE DB source Edit doesn€™t have anything for mapping parameter.
Thanks in Advance

I have an Execute SQL Task that returns a Full Rowset from a SQL Server table and assigns it to a variable objRecs. I connect that to a foreach container with an ADO enumerator using objRecs variable and Rows in first table mode. I defined variables and mapped them to the columns.
I tested this by placing a Script task inside the foreach container and displaying the variables in a messagebox.
Now, for each row, I want to write a record to an MS Access table and then update a column back in the original SQL Server table where I retreived data in the Execute SQL task (i have the primary key). If I drop a Data Flow Task inside my foreach container, how do I pass the variables as input to an OLE DB Destination on the Data Flow?
Also, how would I update the original source table where source.id = objRects.id?
Thank you for your assistance. I have spent the day trying to figure this out (and thought it would be simple), but I am just not getting SSIS. Sorry if this has been covered.
Thanks,
Steve

Dear All!
My package has a Data Flow Task. In Data Flow Task, I use a Script Component and a OLE BD Destination to transform data from txt file to database.
Within Data Flow Task, I want to call File System Task to move file to a folder or any Task of "Control Flow" Tab. So, Does SSIS support this task? Please show me if any

Hi everyone,
Primary platform is 64 bit cluster.
How to move information allocated in SSIS variables from Data Flow to Control Flow layers??
We've got a SSIS package which load a value into a variable inside a Data Flow. Going back to Control Flow how could we retrive that value again????
Thanks in advance and regards,

I'm currently setting variables at the package level with an ExecuteSQL task. This works fine. However, I'm now starting to think about restartability midway through a package. It would be nice to have the variable(s) needed in a data flow set within the data flow so that I only have to restart that task.
Is there a way to do that using an SQL statement as the source of the value in a data flow?
OR, when using checkpoints will it save variable settings so that they are available when the package is restarted? This would make my issue a moot point.

I have a foreach loop that is supposed to loop through a recordset, however it doesn't loop. It just repeats the same row, row after row.
I would like to look into the recordset variable but I can't because it is a COM object and the ADODB namespace is not available in the script task.
Any solution to this? anyone experienced anything similar

I have a table called Tbltimes in an access database that consists of the following fields:
empnum, empname, Tin, Tout, Thrs
what I would like to do is populate a grid view the a select statement that does the following.
display each empname and empnum in a gridview returning only unique values. this part is easy enough. in addition to these values i would also like to count up all the Thrs for each empname and display that sum in the gridview as well. Below is a little better picture of what I€™m trying to accomplish.
Tbltimes
|empnum | empname | Tin | Tout | Thrs |
| 1 | john | 2:00PM | 3:00PM |1hr |
| 1 | john | 2:00PM | 3:00PM | 1hr |
| 2 | joe | 1:00PM | 6:00PM | 5hr |
GridView1
| 1 | John | 2hrs |
| 2 | Joe | 5hrs |
im using VWD 2005 for this project and im at a loss as to how to accomplish these results. if someone could just point me in the right direction i could find some material and do the reading.

Hi,
I'm trying to implement an incremental data pull (Oracle to SQL) based on Andy's blog:
http://sqlblog.com/blogs/andy_leonard/archive/2007/07/09/ssis-design-pattern-incremental-loads.aspx
My development machine is decent: 1.86 GHz, Intel core 2 CPU, 3 GB of RAM.
However it seems the data flow task gets hung whenever I test the package against the ~6 million row source, as can be seen from these screenshots. I have no memory limitations on the lookup transformation. After the rows have been cached nothing happens. Memory for the dtsdebug process hovers around 1.8 GB and it uses 1-6 percent of CPU resources continuously. I am not using fast load to insert new records into my sql target table. (I am right clicking Sequence Container 3 and executing this container NOT the entire package in the screenshots)

The same package works fine against a similar test table with 150k rows.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg168/boston_sql92/8.jpg
The weird thing is it only takes 24 minutes for a full refresh of the entire source table from Oracle to the SQL target table.
Any hints,advice would be appreciated.

Good morning, all,
I am working on importing an Excel workbook, saved as multiple CSV flat files, that has both group level data and related detail row on the same sheet. I have been able to import the group data into a table. As part of the Data Flow task, I want to be able to save the key value for the group, which I will use when I insert the detail rows.
My Data Flow has the following components: The flat file with the data, which goes to a derived column transformation to strip out extraneous dashes, which leads to the OLEDB Destination component.
I want to save the value as a package level variable, so that I can reference it in another dataflow.
Is this possible, and if so, at what point do I save the value?
Thanks,
Kathryn

How can we change connection properties in a DTS pkg with connection?
You can loop through the connection count but the connection ID is not static one.So can’t rely on that.
Is there another way of changing connection properties?

Hi all....
I am currently designing a DTS Package to import data that is processed daily into a large database.
I have to design the package such that if any step fails when importing, I roll back the entire transaction.
I have designed the package with this in mind, checked "join transaction if present" and "rollback transaction on failure" in all of the workflows. I have also made all workflows serialized.
However, when I run the package, it fails on one of the data pumps with the error:
Transaction context in use by another session.
Any ideas?
Thank you,
Brian

Is there a point to wrapping a single UPDATE or INSERT statement in an explicit TRANSACTION:
BEGIN TRANSACTION
INSERT INTO Table (...) VALUES (...)
COMMIT TRANSACTION
I understand ACID and concept of transactions. However, I thought they were only necessary for multi-statement operations. I'm maintaining code that does this and am wondering if this is necessary. Does SQL Server guarantee ACID for single statements? Are single UPDATE/INSERT statements prone to race condition like affects without using explicit transactions?
