TableAdapter Can't See Stored Proc Returned Fields When Using Temp Table
Apr 16, 2007
Hi,
Summary: When my stored procedure uses temporary tables then the TableAdapter won't be able to work out the field names and so won't work. I get an error in the TableAdapter configure wizard saying: Invalid object name '#TempTable'.
I'm not doing anything unusual so this must be a common problem. Let me explain:
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2000.
Detail: I've written a new stored procedure (SP) that uses a temporary table in calculating the resulting results set (several fields with several rows). I recon the temporary table bit is significant.
I've created a new DataSet in VS2005 and dragged the stored proc onto the DataSet design surface.
I right click on the TableAdapter and enter the 'configure'. The problem is that the wizard doesn't think any fields are being returned by the SP.
If I try and do it another way I get the same problem: Right click on DataSet and add new TableAdapter (same thing happens, it won't recognise that there are fields being returned from the SP).
FYI: If I do it for an SP that doesn't use any temporary tables it all works like a dream (problem is that I need to use temporary tables as its complex ).
Thanks for any advise

Hi,
Can we validate the returned order of fields from a stored procedure? Infact, i am taking a query as user input and extracts the results based on the query but for that order of fields specified in a query is important.
Can i check the order after the query is run i.e if this is entered "select field1,field2,field3 from table" then i need to check the order of the resultset generated. I can't check the query before the resultset is generated because a user can enter bunch of queries.
Any way will work, tsql or .net app.
Thanks,

I take the information below in query analyzer and everything runs fine-returns 48 rows. I try to run it as a stored proc and I get no records. If I put a simple select statement into the stored proc, it runs, so it's not permissions. Can anyone help me with why this won't execute as a stored procedure? Articles seem to indicate you can do this with temp tables in a stored procedure. Thanks

I have a stored proc with a query which checks whether an identical
value is already in the database table. If so, it returns a value of 1.
How do I caputure this value in an asp.net page in order to display a
message accordingly? (using ASP.NET 1.1)
Currently my stored proc looks something like this (snippet only):
If Exists(
SELECT mydoc WHERE....
)
Return 1
Else
...INSERT INTO.... code here.

Note I would be happy if I could just return the number Zero if no records are returned. Can someone please help me out here?Here is my query so far in SQL Server. I just don't know how to return a value based upon the result of the records returned from the query.

I have an sql file that contains several queries that are generating numbers to populate a sql table. The sql file is too large for a single sp so I am nesting them. I have 4 nested stored procedures. Each of the queries in each stored procedure dumps into its own global temp table. The final stored procedure needs to insert into a sql table all the information gathered in the global temp tables. So the final stored proc. looks something like:
"Create procedure usp_myProc_4 AS EXEC usp_myProc_3
INSERT INTO mySQLTable (a,b,c)
SELECT a, b, c FROM ##myTempTable (which was created in usp_myProc_1)
INSERT INTO mySQLTable (a,b,c)
SELECT a, b, c FROM ##myOtherTempTable
INSERT INTO......etc;"
I have done this befor and it worked fine. The only difference is that when I did this before these insert statements were being called from within an sp_makewebtask procedure.
Now when I try to save this final stored procedure it tells me "Invalid Object Name: ##myTempTable"
How do I call on these global temp tables from my final nested stored procedure?
Thanks for any help.

Here is the scenario,
I have 2 stored procedures, SP1 and SP2
SP1 has the following code:
declare @tmp as varchar(300)
set @tmp = 'SELECT * FROM
OPENROWSET ( ''SQLOLEDB'', ''SERVER=.;Trusted_Connection=yes'',
''SET FMTONLY OFF EXEC ' + db_name() + '..StoredProcedure'' )'
EXEC (@tmp)
SP2 has the following code:
SELECT *
FROM SP1 (which won't work because SP1 is a stored procedure. A view, a table valued function, or a temporary table must be used for this)
Views - can't use a view because they don't allow dynamic sql and the db_name() in the OPENROWSET function must be used.
Temp Tables - can't use these because it would cause a large hit on system performance due to the frequency SP2 and others like it will be used.
Functions - My last resort is to use a table valued function as shown:
FUNCTION MyFunction
( )
RETURNS @retTable
(
@Field1 int,
@Field2 varchar(50)
)
AS
BEGIN
-- the problem here is that I need to call SP1 and assign it's resulting data into the
-- @retTable variable
-- this statement is incorrect, but it's meaning is my goal
INSERT @retTableSELECT *FROM SP1
RETURN
END

--create the procedure and insert into the temp table without creating it.
--no compilation error.

I don't know if it's a local issue but I can't use temp table or table variable in a PP query (so not in a stored procedure).
Environment: W7 enterprise desktop 32 + Office 2012 32 + PowerPivot 2012 32
Simple example:
declare @tTable(col1 int)
insert into @tTable(col1) values (1)
select * from @tTable
Works perfectly in SQL Server Management Studio and the database connection is OK to as I may generate PP table using complex (or simple) queries without difficulty.
But when trying to get this same result in a PP table I get an error, idem when replacing table variable by a temporary table.
Message: OLE DB or ODBC error. .... The current operation was cancelled because another operation the the transaction failed.

I'm missing something before the JOIN command. The temp table needs to know which fields need be updated.

How can I get the value that is being returned from the stored procedure and either continue or stop the job depending on what is returned?

Hi
I have a search page having four fields. Giving any one of the field as input should retrieve search results in Gridview.
In GridView1 i have child Gridview for displaying details related to Gridview 1.
now i have to write storedprocedure for getting values in two grids.
there is one matching column in two tables i.e CNo.from first select statement we have to capture CNo and basing on that retrieve second table values.
I have a stored procedure for that but my problem is
i stored CNo in temp table i.e @MyTable .after doing select statements from two tables
i want to delete @MyTable. But iam not able to. so pls help me
My stored procedure code is here:
set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[search1]
(@val1 varchar(225),
@val2 varchar(50),
@val3 varchar(50),
@val4 varchar(50))
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @MyTable table (CNo varchar(255))
INSERT @MyTable
Select CNo From customer where
((@val1 IS NULL) or (CNo = @val1)) AND
((@val2 IS NULL) or(LastName = @val2)) AND
((@val3 IS NULL) or(FirstName = @val3)) AND
((@val4 IS NULL) or(PhoneNumber = @val4))
--Now do your two selects
SELECT *
FROM customer c
INNER JOIN @MyTable T ON c.CNo = T.CNo
Select *
From refunds r
INNER JOIN @MyTable t ON r.CNo = t.CNo
END
The output of storedprocedure is like this:
Iam getting all the columns of two tables but the CNo column is repeating twice in both the tables.
so please some one help me.
The CNo colum shouldnot repeat.
Thankyou

I am working with a large application and am trying to track down a bug. I believe an error that occurs in the stored procedure isbubbling back up to the application and is causing the application not to run. Don't ask why, but we do not have some of the sourcecode that was used to build the application, so I am not able to trace into the code.
So basically I want to examine the stored procedure. If I run the stored procedure through Query Analyzer, I get the following error message:
Msg 2758, Level 16, State 1, Procedure GetPortalSettings, Line 74RAISERROR could not locate entry for error 60002 in sysmessages.
(1 row(s) affected)
(1 row(s) affected)
I don't know if the error message is sufficient enough to cause the application from not running? Does anyone know? If the RAISERROR occursmdiway through the stored procedure, does the stored procedure terminate execution?
Also, Is there a way to trace into a stored procedure through Query Analyzer?
-------------------------------------------As a side note, below is a small portion of my stored proc where the error is being raised:
SELECT @PortalPermissionValue = isnull(max(PermissionValue),0)FROM Permission, PermissionType, #GroupsWHERE Permission.ResourceId = @PortalIdAND Permission.PartyId = #Groups.PartyIdAND Permission.PermissionTypeId = PermissionType.PermissionTypeId
IF @PortalPermissionValue = 0BEGIN RAISERROR (60002, 16, 1) return -3END

We are migrating a SQL 6.5 application with 1900 stored procedures that use 100's of temp tables to SQL 2000.
A problem we have encountered was that we started out getting an "invalid column" errors on certain procedures. Investigation determined that the error was being generated in a nested procedure. The table that caused the error ended up being a temp table that was created using "select into". The following select statement from that temp table gave the invalid column error.
First thinking it was the "Select Into" we then discovered that the outer most procedure had created a temp table of the same name prior to executing the lower level procedure. After the select into, the next statement was a SELECT that went against what it thought was the inner temp table. However, it grabbed the outermost temp table and then couldn't find the appropriate columns and generated the error.
The solution, of course, was to rename the inner most temp table. We also remove the "select into" in the procedure by explicitly creating the temp table.
We tried creating some test procedures to attempt to reproduce this scenario without complete success.
Our test created 3 procedures (sp1 calling sp2 calling sp3) to mimic the current scenario. Sp1 created a temp table and executed sp2, which executed sp3. Sp3 created another temp table using the same name as the one created in sp1.
If we create all three procedures at the same time, it doesn't matter if we change the order in which they are created or whether we create the inner temp table explicitly or with a "select into", SQL Query Analyzer won't let us create the procedure because it finds that the temp table has been declared twice. If we create the procedures separately however, they compile and allow sp3 to create a temp table by the same name as sp1. After creating the procedures independently, they runs properly in all cases with everything in proper scope and no problems.
Admittedly, this is bad coding to start with, but what is happening with the scope of the temp tables within the stored procedures?
Thanks,
Glen Smith

I'm working on building a report and asked a developer which table some data comes from in an application. His answer was the name of a 3500 line stored procedure that returns 2 result sets. I could accomplish what I'm trying to do using the second result set, but I'm not sure how to put that into a temporary table so that I could use it.
Here's my plan according to the Kübler-Ross software development lifecycle:
Denial - Ask the developer to make sure this is correct (done)
Despair - Look hopelessly for a solution (where I am now)
Anger - Chastise developer
Bargaining - See if I can get him to at least swap the order that the resultsets are returned
Acceptance - Tell the users that this can't be done at present.

Hi all,
I've a requirement to store the output of the stored procedure into temp. tables/ table varibles.
I've 4 select statements as my output of the stored procedure. How do I store the results of all the 4 select stmnts into 4 different temp tables.
Simplified SP is as...
Create procedure usp_test
as
begin
select c1,c2 from table1
select c3,4 from table2
select c9,c8 from table3
select c5,c7 from Table4
end
I'm expecting something like this...
declare @table1 table (c1, c2)
insert into @table1
Exec <Sp_Name>
select * from @table1
I know the above stmnt works, if my SP has only 1 select stmnt as output.
Please help me to acheive this for multiple select statements.
Thanks,

Upon entering data into the database, my fields fill the entire length specified.
For Example a name field with char type and allocated for 50 spaces when entered with SAM returns SAM and 47 spaces. When I have to modify the record, I need to first delete the 47 spaces. Any ideas as to why this is happening or what I can do to alleviate the problem? This happens with all types and lengths.
Thanks.

/* Run SP and Insert Value in TempTable */
INSERT INTO #tempTable (MyDate, IntValue)

If the above does not work or there is a better way to accomplish this goal, how to change the sql?

Recently someone told me that I could use a Parameter in a Stored Proc as a text placeholder in the SQL Statement. I needed to update a table by looping thru a set of source tables. I thought NOW IS MY TIME to try using a parameter as a table name. Check the following Stored Proc
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_Update]
@DistributorID int,
@TableName varchar(50)
AS
UPDATE C
SET C.UnitCost = T.[Price]
FROM (tbl_Catalog C INNER JOIN @TableName T ON C.Code = T.Code)
GO
NEEDLESS TO SAY this didn't work. In reviewing my references this seems to be a no no.
Is it possible to use a parameter as a table name? OR is there another way to do this?
Thanks in advance for your help!
