Taking Data From A Different Databases/Data Warehouses Using A Sequel Server 2005 Based Database.

Apr 1, 2008

I'm in the middle of developing a Database for a hospital that measures its audits, inhouse operations, and finance. What we currently have and do everyday is collect data from a large database that is real time with patient data, progess, infomation, etc and dump it into a data warehouse that runs on TSI/Eclipsys. We run reports using a number of programs and dump it into Excel sheets that have charts, reports, etc. This Database for which I'm developing won't come soley from the TSI/Eclypsys source, but this is the only source thats updated regularly. I don't want to have in sync with TSI/Eclipysys in fear that every day when it updates data may be lost, not read, or worse won't be up date if there is a problem. My question is is it possible to run a query from Sequel Server 2005 that will take that data upon request using the reporing features on Sequel Server 2005. i.e. What if I need to run a report on measure B in department 12 from Jan 1-Feb 1, instead of being in sync, can I just write queries to take that information rather than double the data and take up twice the space and trouble. FYI, these datatypes rarely change in the TSI/Eclipsys data warehouse. This sure was long question and didn't intended it to be . Thanks for listening and hope to hear back.

On The Subject Of Data Warehouses, Data Cubes && OLAP&….

Jul 20, 2005

On the subject of Data Warehouses, Data Cubes & OLAP….I would like to speak frankly about Data Warehouses, Data Cubes andOLAP (on-line analytical processing). Has it dawned on anyone elsethat these buzz words were created by some geek who decided to take astab at marketing? Knowing that to the backwoods manager who knowslittle of technology that new innovative names for old concepts wouldhelp to sale their products.I mean seriously, what is the story here? In a nut shell, and pleasestop me if you disagree, but isn’t a data warehouse simply adatabase? Can’t you do everything on a conventional databaselike SQL Server, Oracle or DB2 that you can do on these newproprietary Data Warehouse constructs? I mean who are they trying tofool?Take a look, for instance, at Data Cubes. Who hasn’t noticedthe striking similarity between data cubes and views used in all themore robust databases? Also, what about OLAP? OLAP is nothing morethan a report generator. There’s nothing you can do with thesemillion dollar price tagged Data Warehouse total solution packagesthat I can’t do with SQL Server, Oracle or DB2…for thatmatter Microsoft Access. As an example some sales people for Metadata Corporation has the VicePresident of I.T. in Nashville, for Healthspring, sold on their totalsolution data respository which is such a scam. All they had to dowas throw a couple of buzzwords at him and they have him hypnotized.Personally, I feel that these kinds of marketing practices undermineour industry. It helps to unravel what little standards orconsistency we have. What do you guys think?Stuart

SQL Server 2014 :: Move Data From Database Taking Into Account Identity Keys

Oct 9, 2013

I'm trying to move specific data from three linked tables on a source database to three tables on a destination database by generating dynamic SQL INSERT scripts but am getting stuck on the last set of INSERT statements. I don't think I can use SSIS because the source autonumber fields may already exist on the destination side but I could be wrong.

For simplicity, Table 1 (T1) has one autonumber key of PK1 as well as other fields (A1, B1, etc.).

Table 2 (T2) has one autonumber key of PK2 and a foreign key (FK1) that links back to PK1 as well as other fields (A2, B2, etc.).

Table 3 (T3) has one autonumber key of PK3 and a foreign key (FK2) that links back to PK2 as well as other fields (A3, B3, etc.).

Like this:
T1: PK1, A1, B1, etc.
T2: PK2, FK1, A2, B2, etc.
T3: PK3, FK2, A3, B3, etc.

So, I'm able to query the source database T1 to generate my dynamic SQL INSERT statements that will be run on the destination side. I'm also able to generate my dynamic SQL statements to insert into T2 but when I get to T3 I currently am stuck figuring out how to insert because the destination side is unable to match it's FK2 to the just inserted PK2. It throws the below error.

Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

Coming To Grips With Data Warehouses

Mar 18, 2007

Hi again,

How's everyone doing with 2005? I still feel like my heals are dragging a bit. The "knowledge" out there still seems a bit sparse. Am I right?

I'm about 1/5 the way through a BI book and decided the course will probably be necessary as well:
http://www.kimballgroup.com/html/kucourseMDWD.html
There seems to be a lot to come to grips with.
So that's all paid for.

It's been years since I've been on a course of any kind. Too busy working! What's the etiquette? Trousers and T-shirt? Tie? Sandles & three quarter lengths?

This particular course seems to cover the "general overall approach" - which I am pretty sure is a necesary part of what you need to be able to do. The book that is related to the course (which I have already bought) seems really helpful and valuable.

But I don't think it will cover the nitty gritty of SSIS - where most of the grunt work happens. They have another course for that. But I can't wait that long. You can spend your whole life just reading books!

Are all the new little things in 2005 SSIS just a little to specialised? A little too clever? Does it limit us? Or empower us? Can we use it to get the job done? Or will it be a case again of "clever workarounds" when we travel far down a road that we find out (when it's too late and we are committed) can't provide us with what we want. Is it really saving us time? Are we better off writing the scripts ourselves?

------------------------
Me: What do you want to know from your data warehouse?
Client: Err...Emm...Everything
Me: OK, that's great. That's all I need to know. I'll see you when it's done.

Transferring Data From Postgres 8.x Databases To SQL Server 2005

Feb 4, 2007

I have a requirement to pull data from several large tables residing in a Postgres 8.x (PG) database into our SQL Server 2005 warehouse every night. I have been doing this via data dumps to a file then bulk loading said file into SQL2005 but I am running into character encoding issues and newlines embedded in some of the strings which is causing the bulk loader some problems.

I would like to take advantage of the power of SSIS to move the data. I cannot find a current working OLEDB driver for PG and I cannot find an ODBC Data Flow Source in SSIS to use the ODBC driver that is available for PG so I am stuck.

If someone would be kind enough to shed some light on whether this is possible and if so where I could get the instructions on how to do it I would be most appreciative.

Thanks.

Find The Best Approch To Insert Data In Sql Server Database Based On Perfrmance Metrics

Nov 5, 2007

I have two VB.NET dataclient program A abd B.

What i want to do is .. to find the best way to insert the high speed data( that comes at every 10 ms) to the sql server express database table .

I have two options to store the data in the table . One is to insert all the data in one row , the other is to divide it into many rows in the same table . In approach A i will get like 10 records per second and in approach B i may get i may get 30 - 50 records per second based on the amount of data that is comming . i.e i am creating a new row in the table for every extra column added in Approach A and duplication the other columns.

I wanted to find the better way to insert the data based on the performace metrics like CPU usage and memory usage.

SQL Server 2008 :: Function To Replace Data In A Column With X Based On LEN Of Data

Sep 4, 2015

I need to create a function that replaces the data in a column with an 'X' based on the LEN of the data in the column. I created one that does a replacement, but it fills the column based on the max data length, and not the current length of the string or integer. An example of what I'm trying to accomplish.

Original data in a varchar(30) column:
thisisavalue
thisisanothervalue
thisisanothervalueagain
shortval

replaced with
xxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxx

My current function is replacing the data like this:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

How To Optimize Data Import With Huge Volumes And Joins Across Data Sources Not All SQL Server Based?

Jun 7, 2006

I need to periodically import a (HUGE) table of data from an external data source (not SQL Server) into SQL Server, with the following scenarios:
Some of the records in the external data source may not exist in SQL.Some of the records in the external data source may have a different value at different imports, but this records are identified univocally by the same primary key in the external datasource and in SQL Server. Some of the records in the external data source may be the same in SQL.

Due to the massive volume of the import, I would like to import only the records which are different from what I have in SQL Server (cases 1 and 2 above). In fact case 2 is the most critical.

I thought of making a query with a left outer join between the data in the external data source table (SOURCE) and the data in the SQL Server table (DESTIN). The join is done on the respective primary keys (composed keys of up to 10 columns) and one of the WHERE conditions will be that the value in SOURCE is different from the value in DESTIN.

The result of this query would be exactly what I need to import.
How to do this in SSIS??? I couldn't figure out how to join tables in different data sources yet.

In fact I cannot write a stored procedure to do that, since one of the sources is in a datasources not SQL Server.
I have seen the Lookup transformation in this article http://www.sqlis.com/default.aspx?311 but this is not exacltly what I want to do.
Another possibility is to use the merge join, but due to the sorting I believe its performances would be terrible!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Exporting/Importing Database Data (Sql Server 2005 To Sql Server 2005)

Nov 5, 2007

I'm really new to the whole database deal (as well as VB.net) - specifically with the capabilities surrounding VB and SQL Server 2005. My question is open to any recommendations...

What I have is an application that a user uses to create 'new' products. They are presented a form to enter the information regarding the product they wish to create. They enter the details of the product and also locate an image that represents the product, too. Currently, this application saves the product information (including binary image data) into a SQL Server 2005 Express Edition database. This application and database reside on a client pc. What I need to do is to be able save updated and newly created product data into a file of some sort. That file will make its way to a memory stick (USB) and then be transported to a 'field' machine. Quite simply, what is the best way to do this? Are there walk-throughs on this sort of thing? The target database is also SQL Server 2005. I thought I'd post this question on here to get the best design ideas... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sequel 2005 Installation Perflib Problem

Apr 19, 2006

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to install SQL 2005 developers edition on my local PC and I get the following error during the System Configuration Check:

- Performance Monitor Counter Requirement (Error)

Messages

Performance Monitor Counter Requirement

The System Configuration Check for Performance Monitor counter registry value has failed. For details, see How to: Increment the Counter Registry Key for Setup in SQL Server 2005, in the readme file or in SQL Server Books Online.

I looked it up in MSDN and i'm having problems resolving the problem.

How to: Increment the Counter Registry Key for Setup in SQL Server 2005 says I should match the values of "Last Help" and "Last Counter" from these two nodes:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPerflib]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPerflib09]

However, my Perflib09 is empty. And i've tried adding values to it but the problem presists.

Here are the values i have in my Perflib node:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPerflib]
"Base Index"=dword:00000737
"ExtCounterTestLevel"=dword:00000004
"Last Counter"=dword:0000149c
"Last Help"=dword:0000149d

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPerflib09]

Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

Error Copying Data To A Remote Sql Server 2005 Database.

Jul 26, 2006

When copying data to a remote SQL2K5 destination from a SQL2K5 source database, both using mixed sql server security mode, my job generates the following error:

[Transfer SQL Server Objects Task] Error: Execution failed with the following error: "Cannot apply value null to property Login: Value cannot be null..".

This occurs after the destination database tables have been truncated and replacement data from the source would begin to copy.

The same process can be successfully completed from the Management studio with a simple data export process. However, when I run the saved package again from the BI interface, I get this error.

My search engine searches have yielded numerous hits of others having the same problem with one microsoft rep indicating it was a bug and would be resolved in sp1. I am working with sp1. Oddly, there is only mention of this in the forums. No KB article from MS addresses the problem and I do not see it addressed elsewhere at sqlservercentral.

It appears that others have switched to Integrated Security and resolved the problem. However, I do not have that option with a remotely hosted database.

Does anyone have any information concerning this problem?

How Can I Get The 'entire' Database, Structure And Data, From SQL Server 2008 To SQL Server 2005?

Jun 20, 2008

1) I can't get the 'copy database' function to work from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2005. I connect ok. Everything goes to the last step and then it fails.2) I cant get a SQL server 2008 backup to restore on SQL SEerver 2005 either.
The only way I know that works is to script the creation of all tables then export and import. This does work.
How can I get the 'entire' database, structure and data, from 2008 to 2005?
ThanksSQL newbie.
