Telnet Connection Works, Sql Cmd Connection Works, SQL Server Managment Studio 2005 Does Not
Jun 20, 2007
I'm having a strange problem with this but I know (and admit) that the problem is on my PC and nowhere else. My firewall was causing a problem because I was unable to PING the database server, switching this off gets a successful PING immediately. The most useful utility to date is running netstat -an in the command window. This illustrates all the connections that are live and ports that are being listed to. I can establish a connection both by running
telnet sql5.hostinguk.net 1433 and
sqlcmd -S sql5.hostinguk.net -U username -P password

Both these utilities show as establishing a connection in netstat so I am able to connect the database server every time, this worked throughout yesterday and has continued this morning.
The problem is when I attempt to use SQL Server Management Studio. When I attempt to connect to tcp:sql5.hostinguk.net, 1433 nothing shows in netstat at all. There is an option to encrypt the connection in the connection properties tab in management studio, when I enable this I do get an entry in netstat -an, see below:
TCP 81.105.102.47:1138 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT
TCP 81.105.102.47:1139 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT
TCP 81.105.102.47:1140 217.194.210.169:1433 TIME_WAIT
Amost as if it's trying the different ports but you get this time_wait thing. The error message is more meaningful and hopefull because I get:
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I would expect this as the DNS has not been advised to encrypt the conection.
This is much better than the : Login failed for user 'COX10289'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) that I get, irrespective of whether I enter a password or not.
This is on a XP machine trying to connect to the remote webhosting company via the internet.
I can ping the server
I have enabled shared memory and tcp/ip in protocols, named pipes and via are disabled
I do not have any aliases set up
No I do not force encryption
I wonder if you have any further suggestions to this problem?

Hi,I have an interesting scenario. I have a SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition instance running on Computer A. I'm trying to access it through computers B and C.Computer B has Sql Server 2005 Express Edition installed and I was able to use its Management Studio and connect to instance on Computer A.Computer C has SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition installed. When I try to connect to the instance on Computer A, I get connection failed message.I checked some settings. Both TCP/IP and Named pipes are enabled on the instance in A. The TCP/IP port is set to 1433 for both client and server.Please give me some ideas as to how I can solve this problem. -Thanks

Hi All,
I have a web serivce written in C++ and I'm trying to connect to a database. I'm using the same connection string that works from an aspx page written in C#. but when I copy it over to the C++ environment, I get:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
Note the username shows up as null in the error... My C++ looks like:
using namespace System:ata:qlClient;
String^ cs2 = "server=192.168.1.47;database=MyDB;integrated security=true;uid=myuser;pwd=mypassword";
SqlConnection^ myConnection = gcnew SqlConnection(cs2);
myConnection->Open();
Again, this works in C#. Interestingly, a sniffer shows a difference in an NT Authentication Packet as it's sent from my development machine to the database across the network. For the C# call, the NT Authentication packet has a username of "myuser" - from the connection string. It then gets acknowledged from the database. For the C++ call though, the username is sent as "ASPNET" - seemingly ignoring the username in the connection string. It's also rejected by the database in the next packet with the message above.
Any idea what's up with this? -- Curt

Hi all,I'm having a big problem here. I can't seem to connect to a database of MSSQL Server 2005... Here is what I've did:1. Under the Server Explorer>Data Connections. Right click and choose "Add Connection..."2. Data Source was "Microsoft SQL Server Database File". Click OK.3. I browse to the database in the MSSQL.2/MSSQL/Data folder.4. Click on the "Advanced" button, and change the default DataSource from .SQLEXPRESS to .MSSQLSERVER. Click OK5. Received this error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default setting SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) Only .SQEXPRESS that I was able to connect to... i've tried the solution from Microsoft, opened SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration and enabled "Local and remote connections", checked the option "Using both TCP/IP and named pipes" but it didn't help. This is frustrating because I can't get the Membership provider, login to work on my host. Please help. Thank you very much,Kenny.

Hi,
I am trying to connect to a remote SQL Server 2000 database using ASP.NET. This is my connection string
"Server=LOL-DEV;Database=Livelink;User ID=sa;Password=xxx;Trusted_Connection=False"
With this I get 'access denied or sql server doesn't exist'. If I use exactly the same code in a WinForms app, the connection works OK.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be?
Cheers

Hi,
I can use Http connection to Analysis Services 2005 from Excel but when I try to use IIS it fails.
AS and IIS are on different machines and not in the same domain.
In the event log of the server with AS i can see following event:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSOLAP ISAPI Extension: \?C:Inetpubwwwrootolapmsmdpump.dll
Event Category: (269)
Event ID: 10
Date: 5/20/2008
Time: 10:17:02 AM
User: N/A
Computer: *******
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 10 ) in Source ( MSOLAP ISAPI Extension: \?C:Inetpubwwwrootolapmsmdpump.dll ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: .
I assume it's permission issue. Excel and IIS must be using different user to connect to AS. I tried with different authentication methods on the iis but without success.
How can I make IIS connect with proper permissions?

If this post belongs somewhere else I appologize. I have spent several days trying to solve this problem with no luck. My site is online. Hosted at NeikoHosting. I can connect to the database remotely when adding a datacontrol. It tests fine. But when running the page it won't connect. Even if I go in and change the Web.Config connection string to a local Data Source provided to me by Neiko, it still won't work. It just won't connect. Here are the two connection strings in the Web.Config, minus my login info: Only the remote string will pass testing. Neither works on the site. <add name="yourchurchmychurchDBConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=MSSQL2K-A;Initial Catalog=yourchurchmychurchDB;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=me;Password=pwd" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
<add name="yourchurchmychurchDBConnectionString2" connectionString="Data Source=66.103.238.206;Initial Catalog=yourchurchmychurchDB;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=me;Password=pwd" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

Hi all, I hope this is a simple issue that I'm overlooking something or have contradicting permissions set somewhere. I have a fairly basic site with a subfolder containing an aspx page. The user logs in to gain access to the subfolder. That part works fine.On another page(also within a subfolder in the subfolder), they can post form data to a database (SQL Server 2000) which exists on a different server than my web server. This page opens fine, but when submitting the data (only one value to one field for my testing purposes), it bombs and returns the error "Login failed for user"...In my connection string I've specified the username and password which I assigned to the db in Enterprise Manager (not sa, btw). I've also tried letting IIS control the UID/PW, and even specified no UID/PW in either the connection string or the db. Anonymous access enabled in IIS for this virtual directory also returns the error. (?)I should mention that in Visual Studio, the connection string was automatically set to my local development machine's workstation ID. I removed that and have tried replacing it with the server name, blank, etc.(in notepad) - to no avail. dll's are in their proper places, etc. The only thing not working is the database connection.Using: IIS v6, SQL Server 2000, and Visual Studio.NET 2003 (1.1 framework)Anyway - any suggestions? There are so many places to enable/disable permissions, it's getting confusing. I hope it's something I'm overlooking and not a problem with our SQL installation...Thanks!--Donnie

I have a very basic / stripped connection manager with only one property (SSIS 2012). It works fine in design time (you can open the connection manager editor and change the value), but in runtime it only works in 32bit mode. The runtime-validate-method does work, but if everything validates OK then in 64bit it throws an error when you run the package:
Exception deserializing the package "The package failed to load due to error 0xC0011008 "Error loading from XML. No further detailed error information can be specified for this problem because no Events object was passed where detailed error information can be stored.". This occurs when CPackage::LoadFromXML fails.
The 2 VSÂ projects are .Net 4 class library projects with the Build Platform on "Any CPU"
I only add references to:

Hi,
I'm attempting to extract some yearly average figures from our DB. I've written a SELECT statement in SQL Server MS which returns exactly what I need:
SELECT YEAR, CAllSource, AVG(CallTotal) AS [Average calls per day]
FROM (SELECT COUNT(CallID) AS CallTotal, DATEPART(YEAR, Recvddate) AS Year, CASE WHEN CallSource IN ('Auto Ticket', 'Email')
THEN 'Email' WHEN CallSource IN ('Phone') THEN 'Phone' ELSE 'Other' END AS CallSource
FROM Calllog where
DATEPART(MONTH, Recvddate) = 3
AND DATEPART(dw, RecvdDate) NOT IN ('7', '1')
GROUP BY RecvdDATE, callsource) as sub
GROUP BY YEAR, CallSource
ORDER BY YEAR, CallSource
The problem is that when I attempt to use this in SSRS I get the following error:
"sub.Year is not a recognised DATEPART Option".
Now as you can see, "sub.Year" is not even mentioned in the expression. However I noticed that when running the query, SSRS automatically adds "sub." before the YEAR in the section highlighted in yellow above. a) Why is it doing this, and b) does anyone know of a workaround/fix?
Thanks
Matt

I have a report problem. I'm using a parameter to dynamically control visibility for two tables. If the parameter is set to one value, I want to switch one of the tables to invisible, if the parameter is set to another, I want the other table to be invisible instead.
This all works fine in Visual Studio. When I publish it to my report server, the visibility controls no longer function and both tables always display. Any ideas here?
I'm running 2005, SP2 CTP.

Hi
I'm a relative SQL Server newbee and have developed a function that converts mm/dd/yyyy to yyy/mm/dd for use as in a DT_DBDATE format for insert into a column with smalldatatime.
I receive the following erros when using the function in the Derived Column Transformation Editor. First, the function, then the error when using it as the expression Derived Column Transformation Editor.
Can anyone explain how I can do this transformation work in this context or suggest a way either do the transformation easier or avoid it altogerher?
Thanks for the look see...

I have just been able to configure remote connection on SQL 2005. I can also access the AdventureWorks database remotely via ODBC on port 1433. The install directions of a some software instruct me to do telnet <hostname> 1433 to check for connectivity. It doesn't work! I gave my instance the name RM and I also tried telnet <hostname>RM 1433 but again failed.
When I try just telnet <hostname> it works.
Can anyone help?

I just created a stored procedure in SQL Server 2005 management studio. I went to my db and expanded the programmability folder then right clicked the stored procedures folder and created a stored procedure. I saved the procedure as sp_getDistance in the default folder SQL managment studio picked. Now when I went back to that stored procedure folder I did not see my stored procedure sp_getDistance, all that was there was the system stored procedure folder. Did I save the stored procedure in the wrong place, or what did I do wrong. I can't find the procedure anywhere, its just sitting in my My DocumentsSQL Server Management StudioProjectssp_getDistance.sql folder. Thanks,Kyle Spitzer

I have an ASP.NET/ADO.NET page i wrote. It was based off of the development database during most development, and it switched over seamlessly to the production database.
Except for yesterday, when i went back to edit the page. It simply stopped returning results on my queries. To see if it was caused by bad values being passed to the sqldatasource, i tried it in the "Configure Data Source..." window, and it returns zero rows. When passing all of the exact same parameters to the same procedure in the same DB engine, even using the same login information, it works.
Just not in my ADO.NET app anymore...
Can anyone tell me what the hell could be going on here, please? I already rebuilt the page from an older version this morning, being very minimal on changes, and the last thing i changed before it stopped working was the connection string... *BUT* I have triple-checked that against the canon string we have always used in every working copy.
I'm losing a lot of hair over this . Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Basically I've been using Visual Studio 2005 for a few weeks now moving a Pocket PC project from 2003 to 2005. When I hit the Start Debugging Button every time until today the project would rebuild and deploy to my pocket PC allowing me to debug etc but now I get
The remote connection to the device has been lost.
Please verify the device conection and restart debugging.
I used to get this problem in VS2003 sometimes and just like the numerous posts on different sites that I've looked at the problem eventually goes away and I'm none the wiser. One guy said that he found that if he went to bed the problem was resolved when he came back!
My PDA running Windows 2003 2nd Edition is directly connected to my PC via a USB port. I've rebooted my PC and done a soft reset on the PDA but it didn't help. I'm using ActiveSync 4.1.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

I just installed sql server 2005 and trying to pick it up before I start a new job as a developer using sql server 2005. The problem is that I have three instances installed, the one that works was installed prior to installing sql server 2005 when I installed System Architect a CASE tool which utilizes sql server for its encyclopedias.
My initial installed I used the default settings with the default instance and that does not work. I later ran set up again and installed another instance and that does not work. For some apparent reason the POKIN10SQL instance is over riding everything rendering every other instance non-functional.
When I try to connect to the one of the other instances, the error message is
"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connection to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL does not allow remote connections. (Provider Network Interface, error: 26 - Error locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)"
I don't think the remote connection is the problem as I went into the properties settings and checked the connection settings and allow remote connections is checked.
In terms of locating the instance, I installed SQL Server as specified in the handbook ... with the default instance and then a named instance.
Something seems to be wrong with the POKIN10SQL instance which was installed with System Architect, I need System Architect so I need a work around rather then an uninstall.
Can someone help please?

I've created a new database and restored the database from a backup. I'm wanting to import raw data from an excel spreadsheet into the tables of the new database.
When I right click on the database, and hover over tasks the import/ export data menu options are not in the menu.The menu items ends at 'Generate Scripts'.
I'm connected on a local instance to a registered server.
Can anyone advise?

I have a bit of an odd problem in an sql statement where it works in management studio but not in c# when setting up a table adapter the sql is:
DECLARE @week char(2)
SET @Week = 7
SELECT student_id, acad_period, register_id, register_group, week_no, absence_code, attendance_type
FROM dbo.sttdstud
WHERE (student_id LIKE '%') AND (register_id LIKE '%') AND (register_group LIKE '%') AND
week_no = Case @Week when null Then '#' Else @Week End
the idea is if they don't enter a number it would bring up all records. This works in mangaement studio but c# brings up the error sql server doesn't support udt on excecution of the sql. This is sql server 2000. Any ideas why this doesn't work and how to fix it.

Hello, How are you?
I have a problem when I try to create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE. When I€™m going to choose the data source, the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition provider doesn€™t appear in the list. I installed the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from this page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=%2085E0C3CE-3FA1-453A-8CE9-AF6CA20946C3&displaylang=en. In the additional information says by installing SQLServerCE31-EN.msi installs the provider (System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll) in the GAC (global assembly cache) and registers the OLEDB provider (sqlceoledb30.dll). So, I don€™t understand why couldn€™t I create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE?
I appreciate your help€¦

Most of my packages that I've created in BIDS will NOT run in SQL Server 2005. The simplest one that I have fails during a script task that calls external managed code. I've done all the steps outlined in "Referencing Other Assemblies...", but I'm still getting "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Here's a sample of a script that's having a problem. The line in green is the one that seems to be cause of the error. This is extremely frustrating. This code will even run from a command line console without error. Why is it so difficult to deploy one of these projects with managed code?
Code Snippet
Public Sub Main()
Dim variable1 As String = DirectCast(Dts.Variables("packagevariable1").Value, String)
Dim variable2 As String = DirectCast(Dts.Variables("packagevariable2").Value, String)
Dim variable3 As Integer = DirectCast(Dts.Variables("packagevariable3").Value, Integer)
Dim variable4 As String = DirectCast(Dts.Variables("packagevariable4").Value, String)
Dim filePath As String = DirectCast(Dts.Variables("filePath").Value, String)
Dim variable5 As String = DirectCast(Dts.Variables("packagevariable5").Value, String)
Dim results As Boolean
Dim fileGenerator As IProviderInterface
Dim intFactory As integrationServiceFactory = New ProviderIntegrationServiceFactory()
fileGenerator = intFactory.GetProviderEnrollmentGenerator(variable2, variable5)
results = fileGenerator.GenerateFile(variable3, variable1, filePath, variable2)
If results Then
Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success
Else
Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Failure
End If
End Sub

I installed the SQL Server 2005 Trial and am now having trouble connecting. When I bring up the ASP.NET Configuration tool and Go to "Provider configuration" "Select a single provider for all site management data" AspNetSqlProvider Test I get the following message.
"Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider. "
I have already run the aspnet_regsql command-line utility.
Can anybody give me some information on how to set this up.
I am currently working with the club web site starter kit.

I have one computer running Visual Studio 2003, and another running SQL Server 2005. I am trying (unsuccessfully) to add a connection to a sqlDataAdapter from an application in the Visual Studio 2003 computer to the db on the SQL 2005 machine.
If I go to the machine running sql 2005, where I am running visual Studio 2005, I can create this connection with no problems.
Is there a way fromvisual Studio 2003 to create a sqlDataAdapter with a connection to SQL 2005?
