Tempdb Usage Per Process

May 27, 2008

Hi,
My problem is the following:
tempdb is currently 20Gb data space and still some applications request more space  .

Since this server contains multiple applications, I'd like to isolate the application
that uses most tempdb space / get a detailed view on who is using what.
It would be ideal if there was a way to find the SQL / temp table
that cause the problem.

Can anyone help me with this problem.

Thanks
Alren

TempDB Log Space Usage

Jul 21, 2015

I received an alert from our alerting system that log space for tempdb is used over 60%.

My question is what options do I have to troubleshoot and fix it? If it would be a regular user database, I would check for log_reuse_wait_desc in sys.databases, run another log backup, and maybe some other things. But what I can do with tempdb?

SQL 2012 :: How To Track SPs To TempDB Usage

Apr 10, 2015

I can get a snapshot of tables in tempDB, but I would like to track which procs are causing the load in the tempDB.

I think I can sample and record objects in the tempdb, but I would like to record the proc creating the most tempDB usage, and disk read/writes associated with those procs.

The DMV's give usage in the individual DB's, but what's a good way to correlate procs in the DB's to tempdb usage?

TempDB Corrupt - SSAS Usage

Oct 31, 2007

I'm hoping to find help here on the following issue. Here is the setup and situation. I'm running SQL Server 2005, including SSAS. SQL Server holds a database that is about 7GB in size and used to provide the data for my analysis project.

I successfully created cubes, deployed them and worked with them. Then all of the sudden I got error messages that all where related to tempdb and sounded like this:

<...
The operating system returned error incorrect page (expected 1:334039; actual 47:3211311) to SQL Server during a read at offset 0x000000a31ae000 in file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATA empdb.mdf'
...>

I run DBCC but nothing came up (please see below). After searching for hours, I increased the initial size of the tempdb and restarted. It was at about 2GB and I brought it up to 4GB. At first it worked but would then fail again.

My best guess is that is has to do with the amount of dimensions and measures that I use in my cube but compared to what I keep reading it is still very small in size.

I have 4 dimensions, 1 with 3-5 attributes and maybe a 150000 rows total in the view I used. Some of the tables hold more records though (~3 million).

Could it by that my server is simply not fast enough (I/O) to keep up with whatever SSAS is doing? I have a hard time to believe that.

Here is what DBCC CHECKDB ('mbox', REPAIR_REBUILD) came back with on my work DB:

Now, it turns out my HD was really defragmented so I'm currently running a defrag but this is already driven by pure hope.

Sorry for the lengthy mail but I'm really hoping to find help around here.

Any suggestions is appreciated!

Process Memory Usage

Feb 21, 2007

I am using a tool to monitor SQL Server and Windows. It is warning me that:

Process 1004:services has a virtual address space of 1,846.20 MB. This is close to the Windows two gigabyte address space limit.

When locate the process 1004, it shows 15 threads that Elapsed time for all of them is 1d, 3hrs. The Thread state is Waiting and the Thread Wait Reason is "Waiting for an Execution Delay to be resolved".

I think that 1d, 3hrs is from the time I rebooted my server.

Should I take any action? How?

DB Engine :: Transaction Log Space Usage On TempDB Ever Increasing

Jun 15, 2015

today I've put in production a big database accessed by 200 concurrent users, this database has READ_COMMITTED_SNAPHOT set to ON.I know that RCSI set to ON is very aggressive on tempDB so I'm monitoring it.I've noticed that the Transaction log space usage (%) on TempDB is slowly but ever increasing, I mean in the last 24 hours I've started from a 99% space free, now we are 37% space free...is it normal? TempDB log is 35GB in size.

Locked Process Hang Ups Not In Error Logs?? Memory Usage Too??

Jul 20, 2005

Details:MS SQL 2000 dual Intel 1.2 GHz processors.1 GB RAM2.1 GB dBDynamic Memory Managment. No other apps running on this server.First question:Since I have Dynamic Memory Managment setup, Is it usuall that thesqlsrv.exe process on the server steadily climbs and is in the 800 to900 MB range. There is only about 20 MB free. In theory this is howDMM can work, but do people really see it work this way.Second question:I had users complaining about lockups in the app I have to supportthat connects to this dB. At first I thought it was the large use ofmemory, but once I was able to see in Enterprise Manager that therewas process blocking several other processes. EM then locked up and Icouldn't get to the details of what the exact process was that wasdoing the blocking. After restarting SQL services things were fine. When I checked the logs there was nothing there about a hung process. The logs seemed very sparse. Why would there not be anything in thelogs about it. The logs actually seem very thin on any information.Thanks,T.

SQL 2012 :: TempDB Log File Usage Constantly Rising And File Keeps Growing?

Jun 16, 2014

The TEMPDB transaction log file keeps growing. The database server is new and the transaction log was presized to 1 GB on installation. After installing a number of databases, the log file grew over a day to 38GB. Issuing a manual checkpoint was the only way to free some space to allow it to be shrunk back to a usable size. The usage of the file is still going up.

I am struggling to find what process is causing the log to be used so heavily. Looking at the log reuse wait desc for tempdb returns "Nothing" and tempdb itself isn't being used very much or growing in size.

Sep 7, 2007

Hello, When I am seeing SQL Server 2005 Management studio Server Dashboard> I am seeing my(USERS) databases and msdb database usage is very small % of in CPU Usage(%), Logical IO Performed (%) Usage pie chart.

90% of Total cpu usage is showing for Adhoc Queries. what excatly this means in Dashboard? if application uses more than it would have shown in Database level or not?

sicerely this dashboard is good, if any one is watching daily, please advice their experiences here.

Thanks in advance. Hail SQL Server!

Tempdb Is Skipped. You Cannot Run A Query That Requires Tempdb

Jul 14, 2004

Has anyone seen the SQL Server error:

"tempdb is skipped. You cannot run a query that requires tempdb"?

We're running a .Net web application with a SQL Server 2000 backend, and we get the error intermittently. Restarting the SQL Server service seems to fix it, as it causes tempdb to be rebuilt, but this isn't a long term solution. Any direction or hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

I was trying to extract data from the source server using OLEDB Source and SQL Server Destination when i encountered this error:

"Transaction (Process ID 135) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.".

What must be done so that even if the table being queried is locked, i wouldn't experience any deadlock?

FCB::Open: Operating System Error 32(The Process Cannot Access The File Because It Is Being Used By Another Process.) Occurred W

Dec 3, 2007

Hello all,
I am running into an interesting scenario on my desktop. I'm running developer edition on Windows XP Professional (9.00.3042.00 SP2 Developer Edition). OS is autopatched via corporate policy and I saw some patches go in last week. This machine is also a hand-me-down so I don't have a clean install of the databases on the machine but I am local admin.

So, starting last week after a forced remote reboot (also a policy) I noticed a few of the databases didn't start back up. I chalked it up to the hard shutdown and went along my merry way. Friday however I know I shut my machine down nicely and this morning when I booted up, I was in the same state I was last Wenesday. 7 of the 18 databases on my machine came up with

FCB:pen: Operating system error 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.) occurred while creating or opening file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTest.mdf'. Diagnose and correct the operating system error, and retry the operation.
and it also logs
FCB:pen failed: Could not open file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTest.mdf for file number 1. OS error: 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.).

I've caught references to the auto close feature being a possible culprit, no dice as the databases in question are set to False. Recovery mode varies on the databases from Simple to Full. If I cycle the SQL Server service, whatever transient issue it was having with those files is gone.
As much as I'd love to disable the virus scanner, network security would not be amused. The data and log files appear to have the same permissions as unaffected database files. Nothing's set to read only or archive as I've caught on other forums as possible gremlins. I have sufficient disk space and the databases are set for unrestricted growth.

Any thoughts on what I could look at? If it was everything coming up in RECOVERY_PENDING it's make more sense to me than a hit or miss type of thing I'm experiencing now.

Execute Process Task Error - The Process Exit Code Was 1 While The Expected Was 0.

Jan 30, 2007

How do I use the execute process task? I am trying to unzip the file using the freeware PZUnzip.exe and I tried to place the entire command in a batch file and specified the working directory as the location of the batch file, but the task fails with the error:

SSIS package "IngramWeeklyPOS.dtsx" starting.

Error: 0xC0029151 at Unzip download file, Execute Process Task: In Executing "C:ETLPOSDataIngramWeeklyUnzip.bat" "" at "C:ETLPOSDataIngramWeekly", The process exit code was "1" while the expected was "0".

Task failed: Unzip download file

SSIS package "IngramWeeklyPOS.dtsx" finished: Success.

Then I tried to specify the exe directly in the Executable property and the agruments as the location of the zip file and the directory to unzip the files in, but this time it fails with the following message:

SSIS package "IngramWeeklyPOS.dtsx" starting.

Error: 0xC002F304 at Unzip download file, Execute Process Task: An error occurred with the following error message: "%1 is not a valid Win32 application".

Task failed: Unzip download file

SSIS package "IngramWeeklyPOS.dtsx" finished: Success.

The command in the batch file when run from the command line works perfectly and unzips the file, so there is absolutely no problem with the command, I believe it is just the set up of the variables on the execute process task editor under Process. Any input on resolving this will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Monisha

Execute Process Task - Error :The Process Exit Code Was 2 While The Expected Was 0.

Mar 20, 2008

I am designing a utility which will keep two similar databases in sync. In other words, copying the new data from db1 to db2 and updating the old data from db1 to db2.

For this I am making use of the 'Tablediff' utility which when provided with server name, database, table info will generate .sql file which can be used to keep the target table in sync with the source table.

I am using the Execute Process Task and the process parameters I am providing are:

WorkingDirectory : C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server90COM
Executable : C:SQL_bat_FilesSQL5TC_CTIcustomer.bat

The customer.bat file will have the following code:
tablediff -sourceserver "LV-SQL5" -sourcedatabase "TC_CTI" -sourcetable "CUSTOMER_1" -destinationserver "LV-SQL2" -destinationdatabase "TC_CTI" -destinationtable "CUSTOMER" -f "c:SQL_bat_Filessql5TC_CTIsql_filescustomer1"

the .sql file will be generated at: C:SQL_bat_Filessql5TC_CTIsql_filescustomer1.

The Problem:
The Execute Process Task is working fine, ie., the tables are being compared correctly and the .SQL file is being generated as desired. But the task as such is reporting faliure with the following error :

[Execute Process Task] Error: In Executing "C:SQL_bat_FilesSQL5TC_CTIpackage_occurrence.bat" "" at "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server90COM", The process exit code was "2" while the expected was "0". ]

Some of you may suggest to just set the ForceExecutionResult = Success (infact this is what I am doing now just to get the program working), but, this is not what I desire.

Can anyone help ?

Integration Services :: Dataload Process - Error Capturing Process

Aug 20, 2014

I'm pulling data from Oracle db and load into MS-SQL 2008.For my data type checks during the data load process, what are options to ensure that the data being processed wouldn't fail. such that I can verify first in-hand with the target type of data and then if its valid format load it into destination table else mark it with error flag and push into errors table... All this at the row level. One way I can think of is to load into a staging table then get the source & destination table -column data types, compare them and proceed.

should I just try loading the data directly and if it fails try trouble shooting(which could be a difficult task as I wouldn't know what caused error...)

Transaction (Process ID 66) Was Deadlocked On Lock Resources With Another Process.

Feb 14, 2007

Hi Folks,

I am having this table locking issue that I need to start paying attention to as its getting more frequent.

The problem is that the data in the tables is live finance data that needs to be changed and viewed almost real time so what I have picked up so far is that using 'table Hints' may not be a good idea.

I have a guy at work telling me that introducing a data access layer is the only way to solve this, I am not convinced but havnt enough knowledge to back my own feeling up. (asp system not .net).

Thanks in advance

Would someone know a way to identify the origin of the process 55?

I have already tried to execute the following request:
select * from SYSOBJECTS
where id=1784601646

But I have had no returns.

Renaud

The Process Cannot Access The File It Is Being Used By Another Process.

Aug 24, 2006

I have a File System Task Copy file operation to copy a file in an SSIS package. The package when scheduled as a job fails with the following error:

The process cannot access the file 'C:ETLConsignmentAppleAppleRawFile.txt' because it is being used by another process.".

However when I right click on the package and execute it manually from the Integration Services it runs successfully without any problem. I am not certain on how to resolve this issue any inputs will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Monisha

The Process Cannot Access The File Because It Is Being Used By Another Process.

Feb 6, 2008

Error: 0xC002F304 at Rename file 1, File System Task: An error occurred with the following error message: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.".

When running two File System Tasks after each other, with the same file, the file is still locked when running the second task. Resulting in an error: 0xC002F304 at Rename file 1, File System Task: An error occurred with the following error message: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.".

I found a workaround by addind a Execute Process Task before the second File System Task that pings to the localhost. This results in a 5 second delay, but there must be a better solution. Anyone?

A Connection Was Successfully Established With The Server, But Then An Error Occurred During The Login Process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, Error: 0 - No Process Is On The Other End Of The Pipe.)

Apr 7, 2008

i'm going nuts with SQL server notification thing. I have gone throigh this artical which tells how to set user http://www.codeproject.com/KB/database/SqlDependencyPermissions.aspx. This article show how to create new user and setup for sql server notification. But In my case user was alredy existing in database. which is very common senario in most cases. So i did following( check the SQL script below) but then i get this error
"A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)"
this my sql script

ALTER USER username WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = schemaname GO

We're not going to set the necessary permissions  * on the user-accounts, but we're going to set them on these two new roles. * At the end of this script, we're simply going to make our two users  * members of these roles. */EXEC sp_addrole 'sql_dependency_subscriber' EXEC sp_addrole 'sql_dependency_starter'

ASP.net, Database File, Process Cannot Access The File Because It Is Being Used By Another Process

Mar 19, 2008

Hi I am using VWD 2008, SQL Express 2005, Reporting Services, Win-XP, IIS5Basically let's say I have 2 pages:Page1: has a SQLDataSource control that populates a GridView from a table from a database file myDB.mdf  (no code behind)Page2: has a reportviewer control that show a report with data from the same table from myDB.mdf from the reportserver, (no code behind)I have attached myDB.mdf to the SQL Server Express using the SQL Server Management Studio Express. If I first open Page2 to display the ReportViewer it works ok. or using the Report ManagerNow this is the problem:If after that I try to open Page1 then a get an error message:Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'myServerASPNET'. Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'myServerASPNET'.Then I have to restart the SQL Server to fix it,Now I can open Page1 ok, but if after this I try to open Page2 (ReportViewer) againThen I get this error:"      An error has occurred during report processing. o      Cannot create a connection to data source 'my_Datasource'.  &And this error if open the report using the report manager:"      An error has occurred during report processing. o      Cannot create a connection to data source 'my_Datasource'. §      Unable to open the physical file "C:InetpubwwwrootWebsiteApp_DatamyDB.mdf". Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)".  &Now if i check the Management Studio Express again, you can see that myDB.mdf was detached. It seems to be there by it has no Tables or definitions, so I have to attach it again..Do you know how to fix this? Thanks in advance,Ed

Feb 15, 2000

I need to provide some infomation on how much (trans/request)SQL7 can handle.
I checked the white papers and testimonials, but don't see any actual numbers.
We have a clustered SQL7 environment sitting on some Compaq 6400 using 4 cpu's. Our database size is only about 3.5 gig and we are using IIS 3. Does anyone know where to get this information?

Please advise
Thanks
