Test To See If A Column Exist.

Jan 22, 2007

Do you know of some SQL that I can test a table to see if a column exists or not inside a stored procedure?

What I have is a table that contains data for a 10 year history. I asked at the time and was told at the beginning of every new year the table would create 2 new columns so I dynamically set up some of my stored procedure to provide for that….well as of Jan 22 they have not updated them so I have 2 options:

1) hard code the first year in there and change it when they tell us

2) test for the field if it is there start the countdown to grab the rest of the historic info….if not check for the next year until it finds the field in the DB.

I’d rather do 2.

Thanks for any help.

Select Into Local Variable Within A IF NOT EXIST Test?

Feb 10, 2004

Hi all,

I'm trying to be slick, but so far am just all wet *snicker*

I've got a table with rows that may or may not exist, and am trying to retrieve a column if an associate row DOES exist.

For argument's sake, my PIndex table looks like:
PID int
CreateDate smalldatetime
CloseID float

Here is my select logic that I thought would save an extra select to load my local variable if the row is actually in the table...

DECLARE @CloseID float

IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT @CloseID = CloseID
FROM PIndex
WHERE ((PID = '14') and
(CreateDate = '2004-02-06')))
SET @CloseID = 100

The SET afterwards is just to initialize the variable if it can't be had from an existing row in the table.

The trouble is, that it fails to compile with the following error:
>>>>> Line 3: Incorrect syntax near '='.

Any insights? My goal is to use a single select to load the value into my local variable if the associated row exists, or to set my local variable to 100 if it doesn't.

Thanks!
Paul

Derived Column Usage When Column Does Not Exist In Source (but Exists In Destination)

Sep 11, 2007

Posted - 09/10/2007 : 15:53:26

Hey all - got a problem that seems like it would be simple (and probably is : )

I'm importing a csv file into a SQL 2005 table and would like to add 2 columns that exist in the table but not in the csv file. I need these 2 columns to contain the current month and year (columns are named CM and CY respectively). How do I go about adding this data to each row during the transformation? A derived column task? Script task? None of these seem to be able to do this for me.

Here's a portion of the transformation script I was using to accomplish this when we were using SQL 2000 DTS jobs:

'**********************************************************************
' Visual Basic Transformation Script
'************************************************************************

' Copy each source column to the destination column
Function Main()
DTSDestination("CM") = Month(Now)
DTSDestination("CY") = Year(Now)
DTSDestination("Comments") = DTSSource("Col031")
DTSDestination("Manufacturer") = DTSSource("Col030")
DTSDestination("Model") = DTSSource("Col029")
DTSDestination("Last Check-in Date") = DTSSource("Col028")
Main = DTSTransformStat_OK
End Function
***********************************************************
Hopefully this question isnt answered somewhere else, but I did a quick search and came up with nothing. I've actually tried to utilize the script component and the "Row" object, but the only properties I'm given with that are the ones from the source data.

thanks in advance!

DataBinder.Eval Is Saying My Column Doesn't Exist, Probably Because It Has A Brackets [ ] In The Column Name

May 7, 2007

I am using a SQL command in ASP.NET to send a query to a an OLAP cube that returns a dynamic set of data that I load into a datatable and then bind to a GridView. I have made my own ITemplate implementaton for displaying and formatting the data, and the following line is causing me  problems:
RawValue = DataBinder.Eval(row.DataItem, "[Month].[Month].[MEMBER_CAPTION]")
 The error returned is:
Month is neither a DataColumn nor a DataRelation for table
My guess as to what is happening is that it sees the brackets in the field name and stops reading the field name at [Month], when the actual field name is much longer. I know that it knows about the column name because it displays it correctly in the header. Since I am loading this from an OLAP cube the names of my columns vary based on the criteria so I cannot alias the column because I don't know exactly which columns will be displayed. Does anyone know how I might get the DataBinder.Eval function to work with fields that contain square brackets [ and ] ?
If I use the GridView's "auto-generate fields" option it will show the data (and this is the column name) but I lose all control over formatting and the other custom code I'm writing in my ITemplate interface.
Thanks

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Replace Column With Another Column When It Does Not Exist

Jun 24, 2014

I have a script that loops through a series of tables to send data to a table from each of the tables. My issue is that not all tables have the columns I need in them. What I would like is to replace the column with another column when it does not exist. Something like below

Select Misisng_Column(A.Name, replace with B.Name) as Name
FROM SomeTable A
Cross Join (Select Name FROM AnotherTable) B

AnotherTable has one record in it. To avoid a Cartesian issue. Like I said just an example

In my real script the table aliased as A is from a list of tables in a sys.tables query that loops through to the end.

How To Test Column Value To Affect Calculation Of Another

Jan 30, 2008

Hi,
I have a column in table which tells me whether Tax should be calculated on a price. This is stored in a column called taxIncluded. I have a 'price before tax' column e.g. grossPrice. I want to calculate the price after tax e.g. netPrice if the taxIncluded column is set to 1. How do I form my sql statement to test whether the taxIncluded is set to 1 & therefore add the tax at say 20%.

e.g.
id name grossPrice taxIncluded netPrice <--- calculated within SQL
-- ------------- ------------------- ---------------- -------------
1 Product1 10.00 1 12.00
2 Product2 20.00 0 20.00

Column Delimiter In DTS Output Test File

Hello Everyone,

Hope someone will be able to help me out here.

I have a text file exported from my DTS package and it requires an '!' as a custom column delimiter.

Does anyone have any idea how I can use the '!' mark instead of the Tab or Vertical Bar as my Column Delimiter?

Would appreciate any suggestions.

How To Test If A Column Returns Null Or Not Using The Reader Object?

Apr 11, 2008

Is there a way to check for System.BDNull when I use the column name instead of column index? The column Photographer (in the excample below) sometimes contains the value null, and then it throws an error. DB Engine :: Replicate A Master Test Database To 100 Test Environments?

Oct 12, 2015

We are setting up a test lab environment with 100 machines.  We want one master testing db that gets replicated to each to run scripted application tests nightly.

My goal is to minimize the amount of work to move this thing to each of the 100 test machines.  I am wondering if we need to even have the sql local and invest in a monster db server with 100 copies of the db we restore and each test machine point to their own db on that server, or if I should use db mirroring or something to get the master test db to each of those machines instead.

Error 1911 Replication Column Does Not Exist

Jan 6, 2004

Source server MSSQL7.0
Destination server MSSQL2K

I'm setting up replication for reporting purposes to another SQL-server.
When I start the distribution agent I get the following error:
Column name '<here's the name of a column I didn't publish and don't need to replicate>' does not exist in the target table.
Error number: 1911

I assume this is because of some dependencies between the columns.

Is there any way I can replicate without those columns?

How To Test SSis Package And What Are The Things I Need To Test It ?

Nov 27, 2007

hi every one,
i need to test SSIS pacakge which will import data from different database where record count is around 5 millions.
iam planning to test it through c# code as well as manually also.
SSIS source : consist of 7 tables
SSIS destination :consist of 7 tables
Using c# code iam trying to run ssis package through batch file.
i am putting expected rowcount, column count in an excel file and comparing same with destination tables by writing query implementing ADO.Net concept.
am i going right way ,can any one suggest best and productive way to test the ssis package .
what are the other things i need to test it.
do any one can add test cases to it.

S.No

Test Case

1

Verify all the tables have been imported.

2

Verify all the rows in each table have been imported.

3

Verify all the columns specified in source query for each table have been imported

4

Verify all the data has been received without any truncation for each column.

5

Verify the schema at source and destination

6

Verify the time taken /speed for data transfer

7

Fields truncated due to difference in length of the field at destination.

Generates Msg 107, Level 16, State 2, Line 2 - Column Prefix Does Not Exist (Oh Yes It Does.. Anyone Got A Solution ?)

Aug 8, 2007

hi All,

Following code generates error 107 (SQL Server 2000, SP3a):

SELECT

*
FROM

dbo.AssessmentItemHierarchy Parent

INNER JOIN dbo.RaterCategory

INNER JOIN dbo.RaterType

ON RaterCategory.ID = RaterType.RaterCategoryID

INNER JOIN dbo.AssessmentRater

ON AssessmentRater.RaterTypeID = RaterType.ID

INNER JOIN dbo.AssessmentItem

ON AssessmentItem.ID = Parent.ChildItemID

INNER JOIN dbo.Assessment

ON AssessmentItem.AssessmentID = Assessment.ID

INNER JOIN dbo.AssessmentResponse

ON AssessmentResponse.AssessmentItemID = AssessmentItem.ID

ON AssessmentResponse.AssessmentRaterID = AssessmentRater.ID

INNER JOIN dbo.ImageInstance

ON ImageInstance.ID = RaterType.ImageInstanceID

INNER JOIN dbo.AssessmentItem ParentGUID

ON Parent.ParentItemID = ParentGUID.ID

Error on Run:

Msg 107, Level 16, State 2, Line 2

The column prefix 'Parent' does not match with a table name or alias name used in the query.

The only work-around I have found is a rewrite of order:

SELECT

*
FROM

AssessmentItemHierarchy Parent

INNER JOIN RaterCategory

INNER JOIN RaterType

INNER JOIN AssessmentRater

INNER JOIN AssessmentItem

INNER JOIN Assessment ON AssessmentItem.AssessmentID = Assessment.ID

INNER JOIN AssessmentResponse ON AssessmentItem.ID = AssessmentResponse.AssessmentItemID

ON AssessmentRater.ID = AssessmentResponse.AssessmentRaterID

ON RaterType.ID = AssessmentRater.RaterTypeID

ON RaterCategory.ID = RaterType.RaterCategoryID

INNER JOIN ImageInstance

ON RaterType.ImageInstanceID = ImageInstance.ID

ON Parent.ChildItemID = AssessmentItem.ID

INNER JOIN AssessmentItem ParentGUID ON Parent.ParentItemID = ParentGUID.ID

Not very pretty... anyone know why I'm getting this error message with the first version of my query?

SQL To Search Exist Or Not Exist Data

Nov 24, 2005

Hello all,

I have a branch a data, now i need to search through a database to check whther it is exist in that database or not, any syggestion?
Example:

Now i have data 123, 234, 345. Let say data 123 and 234 is exist in that database, but data 345 is not exist in that database.

What SQL am i suitable to use to get those result exist(123, 234) and those result not exist (345)?

The database structure is someting like this:
ID NAME O_NAME
-- ----- --------
1 120 123
2 234 234
3 345 345

1) The data consider 'exist' if it exist in column NAME or column O_NAME (either one).

2) The data consider 'not exist' if it not exist in neither NAME column nor O_NAME column

After the SQL query, someting is expected:

Exist:

ID NAME O_NAME
-- ----- --------
1 120 123
2 234 234

Not Exist:

ID NAME O_NAME
-- ----- --------
3 345 345

Select Column From Table 2 If Not Exist On Table 1

Oct 16, 2014

I am trying to pull a min value of a date column from table 1, if table 1 does not have any record I need pull a date column from table 2. Table 2 will always have a unique record ID (No duplicate ID's).

Table 1

ID date
1 1/1/2014
1 1/5/2014

Table 2

ID date
1 1/5/2014
2 10/15/2014

Here is the desired result when running for ID = 1 (select Min(date) where ID = 1, I should be getting 1/1/2014 from Table 1.

If I am running the same query where ID=2 then I should be getting 10/15/2014 from Table 2. So basically I need to check if a value exists on Table 1 first, if there is no value on Table 1 and then to grab the value from Table 2.

Now I'd like to use the HashBytes function instead over the same fields. But the HashBytes function accepts only one data value. What is the most effective and reliable way of getting an MD5 over several fields?

Test A Query

Apr 10, 2008

Hi.
I have an application where I allow users to type in their SQL queries. Before I store those queries I have to make sure that they are correct, both syntax-wise and data type-wise. For that I execute the query against the database and trap any errors that may be returned and that's how I judge if the query was OK.
In order to keep this test as quick as possible, I tried to add a WHERE clause to it like: WHERE 1=2, so no results are returned. But then I discovered that the addition keeps errors from happening if they are of ata type nature. For instance "select orderid + 'test' from orders where 1=2", run against the Northwind database, returns no errors, while OrderID is numeric and U'm adding a string to it!
Next, I tried to return only one row: "select top 1 orderid + 'test' from orders". This time the error is thrown, however the query still takes a looong time when run on a huge table. I don't kknow why that is, but it seems that the engine runs the query for the entire table and then gets the first row!
Does anyone have an idea ehat's happening or have a better suggestion on how I can perform my test without killing the database?
Thanks.

SQL Connectivity Test?

May 1, 2006

Hi -

I'm having a problem with a VB6 program I'm writing that posts data to a SQL server. The problem occurs when the SQL server is unavailable. When this happens it causes the program to hang for at least 30 seconds before releasing. The hang happens at the code that connects to the SQL server, because the server isn't there. I've added code found on this site to test the connectivity prior to making my actual data connection, but this causes the same hang. Is there any way to verify connectivity to an SQL server without actually trying to make the connection? I'm really trying to eliminate the hang that occurs when the server is unavailable.

Thanks
