Testing Mode 90 In Sql Server 2005

May 10, 2006

Our database is in Sql Server 2005 Mode 80 at the moment and we need to switch it to Mode 90. We need a lilst of all incompatibilities that exist.

Essentially, we need a list similar to what the Upgrade Advisor provides for 2000 databases. The only problem is our DB is already in 2005 mode 80. Switching to mode 90 is easy but does not identify all potential problems for us.

Is there a tool that is similar to the Upgrade Advisor that we can run on 2005 Mode 80 databases?

Thanks

Error While Testing In Multithreaded Mode-

Oct 8, 2007

On 2 servers (Windows 2000 and Windows 2003) both with SQL Server 2000 - the Operating System Event Viewer - System Log - shows Event ID 2012 (Warning - Source = Srv;network error occured).

On the Client side - we get the following error:
unable to open table.: ODBC Error: ODBC RC=-1, ODBC SQLState=08S01, DBMS RC=11, DBMS Msg=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]General network error. Check your network documentation

This seems to only occur when the testing is done in a multithreaded mode.

Any ideas?

Is there any way or tool to check that the migrated data is correct and also to check if migrated database objects will work fine in 64 bit environment.

Any timely help would be greatly appreciated !!

I've begun some testing with the June beta of SQL 2005. One problemI've hit is with scalar-valued functions. The error I often get whenexecuting functions is "Select statements included within a functioncannot return data to a client.". These same functions are workingfine under SQL 2000.Has anybody seen this behavior or know what the deal is?

SQL Server 2005 SP2 Cannot Be Installed Because The Database Engine Setup Remains In Suspended Installation Mode

Feb 23, 2007

SP2 refuses to install for the Database Engine because €œthe previous upgrade did not complete€?, i.e. it detects a suspended installation. The same thing happened to me when I installed SP1. I then remember opening the maintenance dialog and completing the setup, after which SP1 installed just fine.

When I try to do the same thing this time, I€™m presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option, which when I run it reports the installation completed successfully. However, in reality the installation still remains in suspended mode for whatever reason. If I reboot and open the maintenance dialog, I€™m still presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option. I€™ve even tried to run it more than once, but it doesn€™t help. Needless to say, SP2 still refuses to install.

I don't know why the installation is in a suspended state. I know every part of SP1 installed successfully in the end, and the computer never crashed during the installation. I've been using it every day since then, without any problems. All other parts of SP2 did install successfully.

I created a feedback entry on Microsoft Connect, where you can find the log files created by Windows Installer. The URL is:
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=259606

Any ideas what I can do to resolve this problem?

Newbie Set Up And Testing Server

Mar 31, 2003

My previous experience is with php and MySQL.

I currently have Apache, MySQL and php running on my local machine to enable me to test php code on localhost

I've been asked by a colleague if I'll work on an SQL 2000 database they're having trouble with. They said they will provide Visual.net, SQL 2000 and any other software I need.

I'm completely in the dark on this, but have some starting questions:

To test my code, will I need to set up a sever on localhost?

Will I need other software than Visual.net and SQL 2000? I'm using DW MX for my web stuff.

Whre can I find a basic introduction to ASP / SQL 2000 in the form of a tutorial?

How fast does this combination run? The database has 25,000 rows and 6 columns. What would be a reasonal expect time for a result?

Any help appreciated

Stress-Testing SQL Server

Jan 28, 2005

What do you recommend for stress-testing the performance of key stored procedures (they have been identified) for our application? The parameters can be programatically selected, for example:
Select 'exec my_proc @id = ' + Cast(id As varchar)
From myTable
Where foo = 'bar'
I have the Support Tools Available For Stress Testing & Performance Analysis (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5691AB53-893A-4AAF-B4A6-9A8BB9669A8B&displaylang=en) from Microsoft's site and they are pretty good.

Recommendations appreciated, and thanks in advance!

SQL 2005 Compatability Mode

Feb 23, 2007

Hi,We currently have a fairly old product, which was originally onlycompatible with SQL 2000.When we upgraded our server to SQL 2005, the client product gave us a"This product is not compatible with this version of SQL server"error. We put the server into SQL 2000 compatability mode, and things worked. Then I tested a Windows Vista workstation client. The error returned.I realise that if we are simply dealing with a client incompatabilitywith Vista, then I'm in the wrong forum, but what I'm hoping is thatsomeone knows anything server side, perhaps where SQL 2000compatability mode becomes ignored for some reason, when the client isrunning Vista. The vendor pretty much no longer exists, and nothing I've been able todo with Vista's compatability modes has been helpful so far.

MSDE For Testing, SQL Server For Deployment...?

Jan 9, 2004

I'm going to be starting a web application this week. I have quite a bit of experience with Access Databases, and I've also used MySQL (back in my PHP days, thank GOD for ASP.NET).
The server we use to host our websites allows us to use SQL Server databases, so I want to move in that direction, but I'm not really sure where to start.
If I download MSDE, and start a database with it on a site I will be developing locally (on my XP box), will it be difficult for me to transfer the database (or layout of the database) to a production server running SQL Server. I know they're basically the same database, but I'm just afraid to start with an MSDE database and then get the site nearly complete, and then not know how to transfer it to a SQL Server DB.

I'm particularly interested to know if the majority of the database creation will be done through queries (similar to MySQL) because I figure if it is, then I can use the same queries to create the database on both the local and production server.

I just want to make sure that downloading MSDE will be a step in the right direction.

Perhaps links or tutorials or some information on things to watch out for as I take on this process would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Testing Linked Server Connection

Jan 16, 2001

I have a server with several linked servers. Before I execute sql against any of these linked servers I want to check to make sure the connection is active.

I created a small stored procedure that takes the server name. I am trying to get it to run a simple select statement. If the select statement runs without errors (meaning the linked server is active) I want to return a value for success. If the select statement fails I want to return a value for a failure.

The problem is that I am having trouble with the error. When I shut down the linked server and run the select statement I get the following error returned:

Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
General network error. Check your network documentation.

The stored procedure I have only returns this message and does not send the return value that I set. How do I get my procedure to return a failure value instead of the following error above? Is there a better way for me to check for this type of error?

Thanks

SQL Server 7.0 Beta/Testing ASP Application

Apr 7, 2004

Hi Group,
I'm trying to test an ASP application in 'isolation' and seem to be having problems with connecting to the Server.
The setup is EXACTLY like the production environment except for the fact that I am using the Beta version of SQL.

The error refers to SQL Server not existing. I get this error also if I try to open the Query Analyzer without FIRST starting the Services via the Service Manager - so I think it is probably something wrong with the Beta Installation rather than using the BETA version as a back-end.

I've tried using the Computer name as the Server to connect to as well as 127.0.0.0 - neither seem to want to connect.

I can connect manually and see the Database objects. I've even connected, left the connection open and tried running the application again. I still get the same error.

Has anyone experienced this before? i.e not being able to connect to a BETA version of SQL to test an ASP application locally.

TIA

RS 2005 SP2 In Sharepoint Integrated Mode

Mar 6, 2007

Up until an hour ago, I was using the Sql Server Reporting Services Report Viewer webpart in Sharepoint with forms authentication, and was not having an issue. The only thing that I did (or remember doing) before things went sour was upload a new report to the document list and since then whenever I try to access a report, manage the data source on a report, change the report URL in the webpart, I get the following message:

An unexpected error occurred while connecting to the report server. Verify that the report server is available and configured for SharePoint integrated mode. --> The request failed with the error message:
--
<html><head><title>Object moved</title></head><body>
<h2>Object moved to <a href="/_layouts/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f_vti_bin%2fReportServer%2fReportService2006.asmx">here</a>.</h2>
</body></html>

--.

I found some related posts and have tried the following, but none have helped:

Removed all reports and reuploaded only the one that was definitely working.
I changed the application pool for the report server to be the same app pool as Sharepoint (runs under domain admin account).
I changed the application pool for the report server back to it's original (which the Reporting Services Configuration prefers - was running under Network Service acct before the problem started, now running under domain admin acct)
I can browse to http://server/reportserver.
I'm running under forms authentication, which had been working.
I can access the three configs for Reporting Services under Application Management in Central Admin - I've tried changing the settings.
I can access http://server/_vti_bin/reportserver/reportservice2006.asmx as well as http://server/_vti_bin/reportserver/reportserviceauthentication.asmx (that was suggested in one post)
I've restarted IIS numerous times, and also finally rebooted the server.
I've created a new document list and set it for report content, just like the other list.

I also just noticed that even though I've set up my admin account as a site collection administrator, I now no longer see my report options under the New button in the document library (both the old and new). I don't know if this is related.

I'm sure that this is a case of something minor that I did that I forgot about. Any suggestions or other troubleshooting that I can do?

Thanks!

SQL 2005 TempDB In 6.5 Compatibility Mode

Feb 1, 2008

On my current contract we have a SQL 2005 box with a user database and the tempdb database in 6.5 compatibility mode. I would like to remove the user database and change the tempdbs compatibility mode. When you try and use EM just about everything fails with errors about collation or syntax. From what I have found it could be related to the tempdb being in 6.5 compatibility mode but either way I would like to remove this old unused DB.

My question is after I remove the user DB and reset the tempdb compatibility mode what will or could break? I haven't been able to find much on what would change or what to look out for after the change is made. Has anyone else done this? If so what issues did you face.

Thanks

Suspect Mode (no Icon In SQL 2005)

Jun 12, 2006

In SQL 2005 when a database is in suspect mode there is no obvious way to tell (via SSMS). In SQL 2000 the word "suspect" was displayed (via Enterprise Manager) next to the database, and the respective database icon was grayed out. Why was this behavior changed for SQL 2005? From a disaster recovery standpoint, it is very important to see immediately if a database is in suspect mode.

Query Executes Faster In Grid Mode Than In Text Mode!!

Mar 9, 2000

Hello,everyone!!

There is a query which when executed in the grid mode(ctrl+d) takes approx 0.02 seconds(about 21,000
rows) But when I execute in the text mode, it takes about 0.40 seconds!!
Why is this difference?
Also, when the records from this table are read from a VB application, they are equally slow (as in the text mode!)
Why is it so slow on the text mode & relatively faster in the grid mode?
Has anyone got any idea on ‘Firehose’ style cursor ?(which may speed up access of data in the VB application)

Rgds,
Adie

Correct Procedures For Testing Against NULLs From SQL Server

Jul 7, 2005

Hi all,

I have some C# code that is pulling data from a database where a majority of the values being retrieved are NULL , yet their initial column data types are both string and int, which means that I have to temporarily store these NULL's in int and string data
types in C#. Later on in my code I have to test against these values,
and was wondering if I am doing it correctly with the following code.

The following statement the variable or_team_home_id is of a string data type, but may have had a NULL value assigned to it from the database
if (!or_team_home_id.Equals(DBNull.Value)) {}

The following statement the variable or_manager_id is of a int data type, but also may have a NULL value assigned to it from the database.
if (!Convert.IsDBNull(or_manager_id)){}

Are these the correct way to test against NULL values retrieved from
teh database and that are stored in their respective data types.
