Testing Strategies For SSIS?
Aug 23, 2007
I have been somewhat dismayed by the lack of information available relative to testing SSIS solutions. At a time when both managed code and db code are getting tooling (through VSTS) to help drive an automated testing mentality into developers everywhere - there seems to be little out there for those using SSIS. I have seen people talk about having SSIS packages that test the actual packages - there is always the manual way to write the tests in something like C# and then programmatically invoke the package and manually validate the results. Anyone out there have approaches that are working for them?

Hello,
I have searched the forum, and have discovered that the DTS method using IsNumeric to check for numierc values (ActiveX) is not valid in SSIS. Most of what I have seen prescribes using the script component to handle this.
So formerly, I checked to see if a column was numeric. If it was, then I needed to use the numeric value as is, or in some cases, I needed to perform a calculation on the value and use the result. If the value was not numeric, then whatever the value was needed to be changed to zero.
Here is an example of how I would use the current value, or set the value to zero:
If IsNumeric(DTSSource("Col003")) Then DTSDestination("ADepTrnx") = CLng(DTSSource("Col003")) Else DTSDestination("ADepTrnx") = 0 End If
This is an example of how I would use the current value in a calculation, or set the value to zero:
If IsNumeric(DTSSource("Col012")) Then DTSDestination("AlliStdFee") = CLng(DTSSource("Col012"))/100 Else DTSDestination("AlliStdFee") = 0 End If
Does anyone have an example of how I would handle both situations in a script component?
Thank you for your help!

I am currently working on a project which needs to load over a 1000 xml files. The files are stored across 10 subfolders. I am using a foreach loop with a file enumerator, which is configured at the top of the folder structure and traverses the subfolders. This loops through the files, load the data and then moves the file to another folder. The package executes fine for a few 100 files but then hangs; this happens after a different number of processed files each time the package is run. While trying to resolve the problem we ran performance counters and noticed that the number open handles increased significantly just about the time Dtexec looked like it had hanged and DTexec also then started taking a lot of the cpu processing time. Has one else come across similar situations?

Im about to start a project that will be hosted by a third party web host. What is a common way to backup your database and have the backup saved ? The data may end up being several 100 MB of user settings, text etc (blog type stuff). If the DB gets to be several 100MB, then does making a backup and ftping it offsite sound reasonable ? Does ftp bandwidth usually count against your overall bandwidth usage ?

I'm trying to flesh out a good queue table design with our dev team.So here is a general overview of the scenario. First an application will hit a WebAPI and grab any updates to Content and store those ID's in SQL (queue table). Next is the fun part, different multi threaded apps will process ID's from the queue. One app will make updates to the data in a different SQL DB while the other will update an index (likely Elastic).
Obviously, we don't want multiple threads working on the same items. One strategy could be to use UPDLOCK & READPAST query hints. However, I'm not sure about the reliability or performance of this solution. I just started looking into setting up a service broker but that would be completely unfamiliar territory for me. Also I can see how a broker might work well within the instance but how would that work with the application making updates to Elastic?

It will be evenbetter if the paper has some kind of methods to quantify/measureperformance. Has anyone come across with any interesting paper aboutthis?Thanks,ewong

I have the requirement to implement archiving of some database old data.
The database is not used to store files, just table with text/numeric data, some data modification logs.
Which strategies do you usually use to archive old records from a database?
Do you move old/unused data to another similar database in another server?
The data needs to be accessible for read access, even when archived.

There is a great book on database refactoring that contains a comprehensive set or recipies on how to revise databases that are supposed to be always online and may have various clients that can't be upgraded at the same time. I guess this is a typical case with large databases and I would be surpised if Amazon stops their servers just to move a column from one table to another. The book describes necessary steps for such changes. Basically it's all about creating intermediate database schemas that would be used during transition period.
For example, if we need to move a column from one table to another:
Version 1.
Table A columns: Name, Price
Table B columns: Quantity, Date
Let's say we move Price to table B:
Version 2.
Table A columns: Name
Table B columns: Quantity, Date, Price
The book suggests an intermediate version:
Version 1_2.
Table A columns: Name, Price
Table B columns: Quantity, Date, Price
Additional trigger that will synchronize "Price" columns between A and B.
Version 1_2 can be used by both clients written for version 1 and 2. Software developers don't need to rush their upgrades, transition can last months and include several changes.
This technique requires accuracy in version control management, but looks very good to implement non-interruptible database schema upgrade. I wonder if this is the only option available for data schema upgrade with no downtime. I can't think about anything else - it this how large data warehouses updata their databases?

Now that we have a good programming model in SSIS - the question is whether to write automated unit tests for your packages, and would it generally be a good idea for packages?
Also - if yes to write tests - then where to find more informations regarding How to accomplish that?

I want to run remote procs from a local - central proc, but don't want to crash my proc if the remote NT Server or SQL Server is not available.
So, I want to test for NT and SQL availability first.
Here's my code.
====================
DECLARE
@DBName varchar(22),
@QueryString NVARCHAR(130),
@Resultsint,
@ResultsTxtvarchar(31)
/* I find the server-dbasename name in a lookup table, and then build dynamic script */
SELECT @DBName = "<SRVRNAME~DBASENAME>"
SELECT @QueryString = N'master..xp_cmdshell "ECHO >'
+ SUBSTRING(@DBName, 1,6)
+ 'pipesqlquery", no_output'
EXEC @Results = sp_executesql @QueryString
SELECT @Results /* <-- testing here.... */
=====================
If the NT / SQL is running, "@Results" should = 0 (success on the ECHO to the PIPE)
If the NT / SQL is NOT running, "@Results" should = 1 (error on the ECHO to the PIPE)
If I test in QA, I get the expected "@Results" values.
If I run the proc, I get "@Results" = 0 for both events, and them my proc fails on the remote proc call if the NT / SQL is NOT running.
I don't know how to write DMO in TSQL to try that.
I have also tried using 'odbcping' too.
HINTS? Better way to test remote NT / SQL is NOT running?
Thanks in advance.

Has anyone ever heard of using Response.Write to test sql queries in the query designer? Here is the actual suggestion I was given recently:
Response.write your sql query. Copy the query to your db query tool and run the query. Adjust the query as necessary to return the recordset you desire. When you have the proper query, adjust your asp code.
The query editor/designer doesn't like certain symbols and extraneous code. So how exactly can you use Response.Write with a sql query without getting errors in designer?

The error I often get whenexecuting functions is "Select statements included within a functioncannot return data to a client.". These same functions are workingfine under SQL 2000.Has anybody seen this behavior or know what the deal is?

I've started researching on Unit Testing and I must admitI had never heard of Unit Testing until a couple of monthsago. Obviously I am interested in Unit Testing StoredProcedures.I read the TSQLUnit documentation (not all of it) and i also raninto a newsgroup post saying TSQLUnit is very small comparedto NUnit. The conclusion I am making out of this post is thatI should rather spend time resarching/reading about NUnit thanTSQLUnit. Is that a good assessment?I would like to you what you use and if you use actuallyUnit Testing or some other method? I ran into White Box/Black BoxQA testing. All these are new to me. Any good place to read about"Extreme Programming"? I ran into one link that I saved it at work.That's one place i will read more.Any links, documentation or books you would suggest?I searched Amazon and I didn't find anything interestingregarding SQL Server and Stored Procedures.Thank you

How do I test failover to point to the mirrored database instead of the principal without having to stop the primary instance? I would like to just bring the mirrored database on the primary instance to an offline status and see that the same database on the mirrored instance getting activated as the primary. This does not happen if I try to put the database on the primary server "offline" as it complains that any database that is being mirrored cannot be taken offline.
