Hi, i have a table in sqlexpress named Contacts: ID (int) -primary key- name (varchar(30)) lastname (varchar(30)) phone (varchar(15)) fax (varchar(15)) desc (text) In my default.aspx page, i have a GridView that has the conecction to this table. Im reading in a CSV wiht double quote text delimiters. Data came from mySQL.
One column in mySql is text(65535) which is equivalent to varchar(max) as far as i understand.
This particular column can be blank, not null, just blank. If its blank i want to put in a value so i added a Derived column shape and added the following formula:

I have tried this without casting but still get an error. As I have configured the column in the flatfile connector as DT_TEXT, im not sure where its getting DT_STR from.
I'm trying to read a data table with all text fields using C# in ado.net. However, when my query runs, it always returns this error:

The SQL statment is "SELECT field1, field2 FROM table WHERE field1 = 'value'"
If I leave out the WHERE clause, it runs fine. There are NO varchar fields in my entire table (It's a test table). I've tried using both parameter objects and Convert (See commented section) with no luck. A packet trace shows the SQL string is being delivered in tact and the SQL server is returning the error. I don't know if it's a C# client issue, or a SQL Server 2005 Exp issue. The table was created using MS SQL Server Management Studio Express I'm currently using the SqlClient object like this:

I have a package that works fine in development. I move the package over to test and it fails validation in the lookup transform.

What strikes me as odd is the fact that I don't have a way of specifying the data types. I just specify the column I wish to return as a new column with the same name. Anyway, why would this work in one instance but not another?
I am importing the values for field Atype from a .csv file as DT_STR, 13 and I need to fit them into a bit type CType field.
When I write the conditional split ((ISNULL(Atype)?"a":Atype)!=(ISNULL(CType)?"9":CType)) it says that the DT_WSTR and DT_I4 types are incompatible and that I need to explicitly cast with a cast operator. I haven't been able to make it work, how to explicitly cast?
I am running a Access97 front end with a SQL Server 7 backend. On records with an ntext datatype, you are only allowed to update records if the ntext field is null. The tables are linked from access. You get a "cannot update linked table" and "ODBC error #306." Any suggestions??
I have an application where I'm trying to store xml data in a db field defined as ntext. I have a dataset and table adapter setup in VSNet 2005 and SqlCe 3.1. When I look at the table adapter in the VS designer it shows the field with a type of String and a size of 2147483647 which appears to be correct. Also, if I look at the code generated by the MSDataSetGenerator tool it shows the parameter defined in the same way as in the following param = new System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeParameter(); param.ParameterName = "@Questions"; param.Size = 2147483647; param.IsNullable = true; param.SourceColumn = "Questions"; this._commandCollection[2].Parameters.Add(param);
My problem is that when I run the application and try to insert an item into this column the application throws an exception related to corrupted memory. Trying to debug the problem I found at run time, the param.Size value for the ntext parameter had been set to 255. Since the specific xml I was trying to insert was 410 characters in length I'm guessing that this is what is causing the crash.
Is the expected behavior (the setting of the size to 255 that is)? If not, am I missing some trick here?

I have to run a dynamic sql that i save in the database as a TEXT data type(due to a large size of the sql.) from a .NET app. Now i have to run this sql from the stored proc that returns the results back to .net app. I am running this dynamic sql with sp_executesql like this.. I have a table with a field that has a numeric data type (15,2) and length of 9. The problem is that it won't display the actual negative sign for any values less than 0 when running a query. Any ideas? I've used Query Analyzer as well as Access.
What are the drawbacks with using a varchar max datatype? varchar stretches on insert/edit to fit the required amount of data (yes/no), IM gussing this makes it slower? I don't think I can Avoid using this data type, but should I try to avoid its usage if possible,
I am coming to SQL Server from Access and using it mostly for making ASP.NET web apps.
I am not sure I correctly understand the characteristics of the varchar data type and I'm so far unable to find a basic explanation.
It seems that the benefit of this data type is that the actual disk storage involved varies according to what is in a given record's column. So for a column defined as varchar(500), a record where the column uses all 500 characters will use more bytes on disk than a record where the column uses only one.
This would seem to imply that unless there were some reason to limit the characters allowed into a column, it would be an advantage to define large columns, say varchar(8000), especially for memo type fields, or fields such as addresses where it seems like clients are always asking for more space as time passes.
Is this right? Is there any downside to defining large varchar columns assuming they do not conflict with business rules?

There are a few databases I work with that have been designed where varchar columns are used to store what actually displays on the front end as Ints, Decimals, Varchars, Datetimes, checkboxes.
I often have to write integrations with these databases bringing data in and prefer to validate the data whilst loading from the staging tables.
I have seen allsorts of values being passed into the staging tables that will load into the target database because the columns are all varchars but the values don't display on the front end because the app actively filters bad values out.
What I would like to do is for my validation scripts to warn up front of potentially invalid datatypes. My problem is that forexample the ISNUMERIC() function return 1 for the value ',1234' but a CONVERT(NUMERIC, ',1234') or CAST(',1234' AS NUMERIC) will fail with a "Error converting data type varchar to numeric).

Is it possible to convert a nText column in the source to varchar in the destination. I tried using a DataConversion block but there is no option for Ntext, I think am misising somehting here. Can someone guide me here?
Does anyone have any basic, simple scripts of sp's that I can give mycomputer operators to use to monitor for serious conditions on our sqlservers? We are new in the ms-sql arena, a small shop and we cantreally purchase any tools to monitor these servers, but we need somebasic checks that we can use to make sure a server is performing in areasonable fashion, no blocks, cpu<xx%, memory not pegged, IO working,etc...and we need to be able to do this without bugging ourprogrammers every time we are wondering why things are slowwnig down.We are a split shop between as400s and sql servers, and our operationsstaff has no problem performing this type of duty on the 400s. I thinksince the sql servers are so easy to deploy into production, the ideaof how to monitor these things health got lost in the shuffle andallowing the programmers to do it just serves to destabilize ourenvironment.Please help! Hi, We are in process of converting all of the data type of the fields from CHAR/VARCHAR/TEXT into NCHAR/NVARCHAR/NTEXT (DBCS). Having more than 900 store procedure its look like real pain to make modification in all of the SPs.
After failed to find any help from GOOGLE, I am posting this request. I am basically looking for any automated tool which are convert data type in SP based on the field of the table used in the SP. Or at least which can provide me some sort of list which can helpful for doing manual reactoring.
I´m exporting an ms-excel file, then I use a lookup transformation to get a field from a SQL Server 2005 table. The Lookup transformation editor, after selecting the table, shows a warning that says:
at least one mapping between a column from available input columns ans a column from available lookup columns must be defined on the columns page.
So I try to make a relationship in the Lookup transformation editor's column tab where I find the Available input columns and the available lookup columns but I get the following error:
The following columns cannot be mapped: [Department, DEP_CLEGALCODE] One or more columns do not have supported data types, or their data types do not match.
The field in SLQ Server is varchar(10) and the input field is a derived column transformation; I have tried different Data Types but I always have the same error.
