The Prelogin Packet Used To Open The Connection Is Structurally Invalid
Dec 17, 2007
On one of the workstations being used by a developer we see the following entries in the event log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSSQLSERVER
Event Category: (4)
Event ID: 17828
Date: 17/12/2007
Time: 10:24:25
User: N/A
Computer: <removed>
Description:
The prelogin packet used to open the connection is structurally invalid; the connection has been closed. Please contact the vendor of the client library. [CLIENT: <local machine>]
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
<removed>
Searching on the internet we don't get a satisfying answer. This connection to the database is made through a .NET web service using the default client libraries from the Base Class Library. We are talking about a fully patched SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and .NET Framework 3.5.
Any clues?
I only found the following "relevant" link:
http://www.webservertalk.com/message1539518.html
But I am the kind of guy that likes to know what went or goes wrong instead of trying out hacks like the one described in the above link.

Hello,
While doing performance testing on a Tomcat based web application using the v1.1 JDBC driver connecting to SQL Server 2005, the tomcat server has been throwing the above exception at a fairly low rate. I have seen some related issues in the forums with v1.1 of the MS JDBC driver, but those were asking about connection reset related errors. In this case the 'invalid packet header' exception is consistently seen. I am in the process of repeating the test with some additional application side logging turned on, and have tried enabling FINEST level logging for the driver, but that leaves me with a 500MB log file and so far no instances of that exception in question being thrown. This is not unusual, the error has only been seen about 14 times in about 20 tests, with each test running about an hour and a half.
A few quick tests with the 1.2 driver did not throw this exception, but did throw a high number of '[Connection|Statement|Resultset] Closed'
While I gather more information, I was wondering if there is anything significant in this particular exception type that could point to a more specific set of tests I could run?
The exceptions seen so far:

I have an expression based project connection manager in an existing package and updating Packet Size parameter.
After update and clicking on OK, Packet Size value reverts back to 0 (which is old value). This connection manager is used by lot of Dataflow tasks in my package and recreating the connection manager and updating the reference is not a viable option.

Hi there,
I got an approach like that:
1) Read something from DB - check the value, if true stop if false go on2) Read the second Value (another SQL Statement) - check the value etc.
Now I could open the connection at 1) and if I have to go to 2) I leave the connection open and use the same connection at 2). Is it ok to do that?
The other scenario would be opening a connection at 1), immediately close it after I read the value and open a new connection at 2).
Thanks for the input!

I'd like to extend a package functionality.
I created it drag/drop way with hard-coded table names.
Now for the same source and destination connections I'd like somehow in a loop transform 20 source tables of the same structure to 20 destination tables of the same structure providing table names in a loop.
I also have in the package preparation SQL tasks such as dropping destination table if exists, and then re-creation , so it needs to consume a table name as parameter from my loop.
Is it doable ?

I am accessing SQL2005 with C# code using OleDbConnection.
A try and catch block catches the following error once a while between the Open() and Close() of the connection:
ExecuteNonQuery requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is closed.
I do not even have any idea where to start to debug this. The ExecuteNonQuery() runs a delete SQL query. It works 99.9% of the time. I do not see anything wrong when this error happens.
Any hint would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? My JDBC is erroring. I'm using the Microsoft 1.2 driver, I have a SQL Server 2005 back end with the following clients connecting to it:
ASP.NET 2.0 web application
Visual Studio C# console applications (*2)
Java command line client.
Everything runs hunky-dory on my dev. environment (laptop, local, launched via Visual Studio) but now it's on the server, the Java client is erroring.
When I use the 1.2 sqljdbc.jar file, I get:
25-Jan-2008 12:20:29 com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerConnection Prelogin
WARNING: ConnectionID:1 TransactionID:0x0000000000000000 Prelogin response packet not marked as a REPLY
My Error Trap:
--------------
SQL STATE : 08S01
ERROR CODE: 0
MESSAGE : The TDS protocol stream is not valid.
When I use the 1.1 file I get:
My Error Trap:
--------------
SQL STATE : 08S01
ERROR CODE: 0
MESSAGE : The TDS prelogin response is incomplete. The target server must be SQL Server 2000 or later.
I don't know what these errors mean. I've tried compiling as java 1.5 and 1.6 with the same results. It works fine on my laptop (Vista Home Premium) but won't when I try and connect to the server. I've searched the web on the error messages and can't find an answer yet.
Any help appreciated.
My drivers are the Windows versions. Also, everything else is working okay on the server: The consoles are up and running and the web browser connects and SELECTs, UPDATEs & INSERTs okay.
I ought to mention: My laptop is running SQL Server Development edition and the Server is running obviously something else.
My SQL Server version is 9.0.1399 and the OS is Windows Server 2003. SQL Authentication is mixed mode.

When trying to connect to a remote SQL 2005 Express Server, I get this error message: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (ParseConnectParams()).]Invalid connection.
I can remotely connect to the server with the same username and password using osql in command and I can also connect to the server remotely with SQL Server Management Studio installed on this machine.
Here is my connection string:
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Password=password;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=uid;Initial Catalog=EBM;Data Source=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxSQLEXPRESS;Use Encryption for Data=False
The same connection string works if connecting locally, via changing the ip address to the machine name:
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Password=password;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=uid;Initial Catalog=EBM;Data Source=machinenameSQLEXPRESS;Use Encryption for Data=False
Any help would be appreciated.

We have a remotely hosted website, but we have a SQL server in our company (powers our instore portal). I have set up our router so that i can connect to remote desktop and sql server. I can connect to the remote desktop and i can connect to the sql server with query analyzer. On our local site i can set up a connection to look at sqlserver.underpargolfutah.org and it works fine, everything goes well.
Now here is the problem. On the hosted site i have set up the following

Hi folks.
I'm a programmer, and very new to databases... but I've worked with 7 or 8 of them so far and I've had no problems. I just had a client get himself a server. He got it from his friend and that friend set it up and sent me the info. It has .NET 2.0 and 1.1 and it has MSSQL Server 2005 Express. He sent me the login info for the database and I connected fine via my enterprise manager... but, when I try to connection asp.net I get "invalid connection" I'm using the exact same info. I've tried setting the server as (local) and as the web address I used in my enterprise manager. I recieved the same error for both.
Any suggestions welcome, thanks!

Hi all,
We have recently been having some problems with our server, and im stuck for ideas of what to try next!
Basically we have a busy period every 2 hours where we have many records that need to be processed etc, but we are getting an error coming back saying 'Invalid connection string attribute'.
Now this would be fine but we are using a UDL and 80% of the records are going in fine and its just this few that are coming back with this error. This happens at 3mins and 55 secs past the hour everytime too.
Now i ran SQL profiler over this time and there are records and such being processed fine, then all of a sudden at 3min and 55 secs past there is a mass 'Audit Logout' noted in profiler.
It would seem to me it has nothing to do with the connection string as it was working perfectly fine before.
The processing is done using a VB6 dll being called through ASP on IIS 6.
Does anyone have any ideas on what to try next or advice?
Thanks all
Danny

Here's the connection string:

Anyone?

Hello!
This code sample stops when I try to open a connection (see below). Ther error message reads "pipe provider , error 40". The help suggests that the credentials are wrong. I donīt think so, could there be another problem? Tough question but, I would appreciate any help.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection sqlConnection1 =
new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["SwimAdminConnectionString"].ConnectionString);
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand cmd = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand();
cmd.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.Text;
string sql1 = Session["txtFirstName"].ToString();
string sql2 = Session["txtLastName"].ToString();
cmd.CommandText = "INSERT dbo.Member (mbrFirstName, mbrLastName) VALUES (sql1, sql2)";
cmd.Connection = sqlConnection1;
sqlConnection1.Open(); //EXCEPTION HERE!!!
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
sqlConnection1.Close();

Whenever I use "User Instance=True" as in the connection string below, I get an invalid connection string error. If I take it out, the connection string generates other errors.
"Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;User Instance=True;AttachDBFileName=|DataDirectory|DbName.mdf;Data Source=.\sqlexpress;"
Removing User Instance=True always eliminates the invalid connection string message.
BTW, I tried both Data Source=.\sqlexpress and Data Source=.sqlexpress.

Hi, Has somebody had a problem like this before? Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the
fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote
connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not
open a connection to SQL Server) That's part of the code: SqlConnection con; string sql; SqlCommand cmd; con=new SqlConnection("Data Source=elf/SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=logos;Integrated Security=SSPI;"); sql="SELECT max(id_kandydat) from Kandydat"; con.Open(); cmd=new SqlCommand(sql,con); int id = Convert.ToInt32(cmd.ExecuteScalar()); con.Close(); SqlDataSource7.InsertCommand="INSERT INTO Kandydat_na_Kierunek(id_kandydat, id_kierunku, id_stan) VALUES ("+"'"+id+"'"+","+"'"+DropDownList1.SelectedValue+"'"+","+'1'+");"; I don't really get it. I'm nearly 100% sure that before some changes in my project this had worked perfectly. Does anybody have any idea how to make it work again? I would be very grateful for any help. And, yesy, I know it is quite common error, but proposed solution found didn't help.Regards,N.

Hello, I have always closed my db connections asap after opening them and have always thought this was the best practice. But now I am wondering if I can just leave the connection open.
I created a windows service which runs on a timer and executes every 5 seconds. The problem is that the code takes longer than that to process and the code may be executing three times at once. Im worried that since I use the same connection each time the code executes that a connection opened by the first run through may be closed or reopened by the second or third running of the code resulting in an error. The connection is opened and closed about 10 times each time the timer event fires. Should I open the connection once and leave it open when the service is started and close it when it is stopped or on any error?
Thanks
