This Is An Access Project Linking Tables On SQL 2005 Server.

May 10, 2006

Looks like the Office 2003 MS Access has no support for creating a linked server and implement design changes. While you could link to the SQL 2005 tables, which show up as queries in MS Access 2003, any further use of the linked queries are not supported unless the Access 2003 version came out after the SQL 2005 release. What kind of an update is needed, or fix is needed so that Access projects can be developed?

Connection Fails In Linking SQL Server 2005 Tables Into Access Using DAO 3.51

Aug 21, 2006

Hi,

I have an app that creates and attaches tables from SQL Server into an Access mdb using an ODBC link from VB6 using DAO 3.51 on Windows 2000. Recently I upgraded to SQL Server Express edition and tested it. It worked fine against the Express Edition. So, I installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on our Server hoping that they operate identically. How wrong one can be! the same code that worked against Express Edition does not work on Standard Edition.

It is strange that the App works for about 5 seconds which attaches about 38 tables and after that the connection drops and I have a hell of a time to get the rest of the tables linked. The error that comes up is:

Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 10060
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen (connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 11
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]General network error. Check your network documentation.

The PC that I am using to connect is in a different domain to the Server where the SQL Server database resides. I thought that domains might be the reason. But even joining the PC to the same domain as the server still does not work and behaves the same. So I do not think it is a domain related issue.

I have also looked at the SQL Server and database configurtaions. I cannot see anywhere any specific time out of around 5 seconds. Even the time out through the SQL Server ODBC driver is set to 30 seconds by default as far as I know. So, it looks like there is a time out somewhere but I am absolutely confused as to where this 5 second time out is comming from.

I also thought permissions on the database or tables might be the issue but after looking at the database and table permissions, they all look OK. The user has prettymuch the same access as the SA on the database.

Has anybody came across this problem? If so, I appreciate if someboday can give me a hint as to where I can start.

Thanks,

Linking Tables From MS Access

Is there a way to link MS Access tables with SQL Server tables so the client app sees them as tables from one database?

SQL 2000 Linking Tables To Access

Oct 23, 2004

Hi, I need to link an Access 97 database to sql server 2000. I can't use Enterprise Manager so I have created a simple asp.net page using sp_addlinkedserver and sp_addlinkedsrvlogin.

The mdb file is on a network share, then I have permissions problems: here is a sample

sp_addlinkedserver 'test', 'Access 97', 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'\SVKNFS080Pshareaccess97db1.mdb', 'efco'

sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'test', false, 'sa', 'Admin', NULL

I have no problems executing these stored procedures (the linked server is added in sysservers table), but when I try to query the access database

SELECT * FROM test...profile

I get this error

Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server][OLE/DB provider returned message:
The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\SVKNFS080Pshareaccess97dboutlet.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.]

The mdb file is not locked, I think is a permission's problem.

Can anyone help me ?

Thanks in advance

Using MS Access 2003 Project With SQL Server 2005

Mar 16, 2006

I continue to receive an error that states "The version of Microsoft Access doesn't support design changes with the version of Microsoft SQL Server your Access project is connected to. See the Microsoft update website for the latest information."

I'm using Access 2003 that I ran a database through the Upzinging Wizard with a copy of SQL Server 2005.

I have searched the Office Update pages and can't locate anything that helps, although I'm sure I'm probably missing something.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Canīt Open Sql Database Tables From Access Adp Project

Apr 1, 2004

hi there,

we canīt open most of the sql server tables from our Access
project any more, which has to be related to collation or
extended property problems.

trying to open any table will result in the information
"The stored procedure has been executed but did not return
any records" after the first try
and later on nothing will happen any more; tables wonīt
open.

basically this started to happen after recreating the sql
database due to resolution 1 in Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article - 318989:
collation of the server is Latin1_General_CI_AS
collation of the old database was
SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, which led to the error
described in the article.
collation of the new database is set to <Database
Standard>, now i have the problems described above.

anybody some good help on that?

ps: we canīt really rebuild the user database all the
time, because we got flight data in about 4 billion
records in there, so we will need anything quick and
easy...
thanks

Access Project Connecting To SQL 2005

Jan 12, 2007

Most of our users are using MS Access project to work with our data in SQL Server 2005. The problem we have is that in order for them to access the tables they need to be given db_datareader and db_datawriter permission on the database. Our goal is not to give access to the tables themselves but to views. Therefore, we've created several views and placed them into a particular schema. Now we want to give access to that schema, but when we assign select, delete, insert, and update to that schema user in ms access project aren't able to view these tables. When we give them db_datareader permission they are able to see the views but in parentencies does not show the correct schema; therefore, when you try to open that view it errors out saying it doesn't exist. Also since they now have db_datareader they are also able to access the other view and tables in the database.

What we are looking to do is give our Access Project users the permission to link to SQL Server 2005 views by schema only.

Linking To SQL Server In Access

Feb 6, 2006

We recently upgraded a number of databases from MS Access 2000 to SQL Server 2000. I need to make it so that users can display the data from the SQL Server so I created some link tables in Access for them to view the data without using SQL Server Enterprise Manager. This works fine in tables with only a few thousand rows of data. However some of the tables have 100K+ rows of data, and these are not displaying the data. When someone tries to view the data in one of these tables all they see is #Deleted in every column. Is it possible to link to tables in SQL Server with large numbers of rows and view this info in Access?

Linking To SQL Server To Access 97

Dec 7, 2007

OK here is my situation: I work in a laboratory with a 10 year old instrument that stores results in an Access 97 DB. The DB is beautifully designed and implemented. The problem is that since the software is so old, once the DB gets above a few MB in size the application starts to fail. So their solution is to Backup (make a copy) and Cleanup (delete data older than X days) once a week. So what I end up with is a bunch of copies of the DB, which fragments the data that I need. In order to get the data results I have been using an Access 2003 DB linked to this one (because I can't create Views in that database). The lab users then use the linked DB directly or I have written some automation code in Excel VBA (ADO) to simplify it for the other users. This allows us to query data immediately as it is produced.

My hope is that I can somehow get all of the data into a SQL Server DB. Now I have imported one of the backup copies of the DB in and the table structure and data imports fine into SQL Server, but I end up with duplicate rows because the different DB backup files have overlapping data, and for some reason there aren't PKeys. Also, I'd prefer to have some way of automating the input. Something like a trigger on the Access table so that any new data is imported into the SQL DB automatically. I doubt this is possible, but that is generally what I am trying to do and I am out of ideas. The ultimate goal is that the SQL DB will always be "updated" and I can use that as my query source and take advantage of the power of SQL Server.

Hopefully that all made sense... if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

Thanks for your time.

Linking Two Tables Within One Server

Mar 31, 2008

First off, I am a novice in regards to SQL server and have the rudimentary skills to navigate, execute, query under SQL Server Manager. So, please bear with me.

I am working on a program that was not developed by myself, it is for my business and the company that developed it has gone under, so I have no technical support. The program uses SQL Server and ASP.net. We had a recent hard drive crash and I am in the predicament of having to re-install a new instance of the server onto a new computer. I have the most recent saved "data" files within "Microsoft SQL server/MSSQL/Data" directory. It includes the master, model, MSDB, etc. files.

Long story short, I have been successful in making the program operational again and I can connect to the server properly. It even works when web connecting with internet explorer. The problem I am facing is that all of the data is missing. When I connect through SQL Server Manager, I can see that there are two databases, I will name them "data1" and "data2". When I run a query of the tables, all the data is in "data2". All the stored procedures and tables are identical in both "data1" and "data2".

I am assuming (hopefully I'm right) that "data1" and "data2" are somehow linked or joined in some way. Any insight in how to get these two tables to link would be very much appreciated. Again, I am a novice, and will need help with specific coding that I can put into a query window and execute.

Thanks in advanced.

Linking Tables To SQL Server

Apr 23, 2007

I'm new to SQL Server 2000. I decided to purchase this server because my old company (UPS) used the server to help expedite queries and manage on-line reporting. So, now it's up to me to utilize and understand the new server. I have been using MS Access as my front-end for several ad-hoc databases, so I'd like to keep utilizing this method. I want to test my first database using the SQL Server.

I've got everything set up. The IT department has installed the server software on my computer. Within my Access database, I link in tables from a database called "Progress" using a Merant driver. Queries, forms, macros and modules are all pulling from these "linked" tables. Do I need to link these tables into the SQL Server? How do I transistion this database over to SQL? I guess I'm confused about the relationship of how all of this should work.

Right now it looks like this:

PROGRESS ..... linked....... MS Access ....... reporting/results

Linking Tables Between Databases On Same Server

Aug 29, 2007

Hi, I have 2 similar databases on the same SQL server (due to licencing and customisation issues for off the shelf software).

I would like to create a third database with site specific lookup tables to map data across to site codes, to do summary queries for data reporting, and to create a single point for data access. I can't modify the 2 databases.

I have created the third database and added the necessary tables, relationships, views, etc. But, how do I link to tables in the other databases on the same server so that I can do joins in a query/view ? I have SQL Server Enterprise manager.

Thanks.

Why Would Tables Pulled In From ODBC In Access Be Different Than Tables In SQL 2005 Tables?

Jan 24, 2008

I'm new to my company, although not new to SQL 2005 and I found something interesting. I don't have an ERD yet, and so I was asking a co-worker what table some data was in, they told me a table that is NOT in SQL Server 2005's list of tables, views or synonyms.

I thought that was strange, and so I searched over and over again and still I couldn't find it. Then I did a select statement the table that Access thinks exists and SQL Server does not show and to my shock, the select statement pulled in data!

So how did this happen? How can I find the object in SSMS folder listing of tables/views or whatever and what am I overlooking?

Thanks,

Transferring MS Access Tables To SQL Server 2005: PRODUCT LEVEL TOO LOW Error

Jun 27, 2007

Hi,

I am using MS Access 2003 SP2 to maintain some data tables. I use SSIS to transfer them to SQL Server 2005, Enterprise Edition.

When I run the SSIS package from within Visual Studio 2005, the package runs without error.

When I try to run the same SSIS package by double-clicking on it in my File System (which invokes the Execute Package Utility, Version: 1.0) none of the tables get copied. Instead all I receive is a message for each table,

Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_PRODUCTLEVELTOLOW. The product level is insufficient for component "Data Conversion 1" (49).

The only data conversion I perform is double-byte characters to single-byte characters.

Bob Bojanic, MSFT, made a few suggestions about this in another thread -- but I have created this new thread to help focus on this specific issue. In particular, he asked if we have installed the complete SSIS support for SQL Server 2005, Enterprise Edition, and my network support and database support staff assure me that such complete SSIS support was installed.

Are others having this problem?

Dan

(I just took a look at some of the transformations in the Data Conversion task, and many of them are using an Output Alias identical to the Input Column name. Might that be causing the problem? I will try changing the Output Alias for some tables and see if they then transfer correctly. The "identical name" Output Alias values were created by the Migration Wizard for a DTS 2000 package.)

Linking A SQL Server 2000 DB To 2005

Aug 8, 2007

I am trying to link an existing SQL 2000 server to a new 2005 box, but for some reason it will not link. I tried another 2000 server and that one worked perfectly well.

When I link it and perform a simple query...
select a, b from [server1].[db1].[dbo].tablec

I receive a 7314 message with text "OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "server1" does not contain the table "].[db1].[dbo].tablec". The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table.

What's odd is that I was able to link the problematic server to other SQL 2000 servers with no previous issues.

Any ideas?

Visual Studio 2005 Automatically Sets SSIS Project As Startup Project

Feb 23, 2007

I have a Visual Studio 2005 solution which contains a Sql Server Integration Services (SSIS) project.

In this solution I have explicitly set a Web application project as startup project, but whenever I edit a DTS package within the SSIS project, VS automatically sets the SSIS project as startup project and the package I edit as startup object.

Needless to say, this may cause some really unwanted incidents when running the solution - thinking that you're about to run the Web application project (that was explicitly set as startup project), but instead, you run the edited package in the SSIS project.

Is there any way to avoid having the SSIS project automatically setting itself as startup project, any workaround here at all? :)

Thanks.

Access Project / SQL Server Connection Timeout Problem

Jan 31, 2007

Hello,

I have an Access .adp file that's connected to a SQL Server. I can run small queries just fine, but some of my queries take several minutes to run. When I try to run a lengthy query I get an error message that says "Timeout Expired".

I believe that this error is the one that is described here on MSDN online:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243464

I tried to implement a solution similar to this in .adp file by creating this subroutine:

----------------------------------------------

Sub BypassTimeout()

CurrentProject.Connection.CommandTimeout = 0

MsgBox "The subroutine ran"

End Sub

-----------------------------------------------

I know that the subroutine is running because I'm seeing the message in the MsgBox statement. (This sub runs everytime the .adp file is opened).

However, doing this still doesn't seem to prevent me from getting the "Timeout Expired" error message when I try to run a lengthy query.

Does anyone know a way around this? I believe the default timeout is 30 seconds ... but SURELY microsoft did not intend for .adp files to not be able to run queries that are longer than 30 seconds.
