Time Zone Challenge - All Ideas Welcome
Nov 9, 2006
Hi all,
I have been tasked with an interesting challenge and was wondering if any of you experts out there might have any ideas on a solution. Basically, I have a table of packages:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tPackage] (
[PkgID] [int] NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ,
[PkgDelivZip] [char] (5) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[PkgDelivDate] [smalldatetime] NULL ,
[HasBeenDeliv] [bit] NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
INSERT INTO tPackage VALUES (1, '30022', '11/9/06 10:30 am', 1)
INSERT INTO tPackage VALUES (2, '30022', '11/9/06 10:30 am', 0)
INSERT INTO tPackage VALUES (3, '30022', '11/9/06 06:00 pm', 0)
INSERT INTO tPackage VALUES (4, '96801', '11/9/06 10:30 am', 1)
INSERT INTO tPackage VALUES (5, '96801', '11/9/06 10:30 am', 0)
INSERT INTO tPackage VALUES (6, '96801', '11/9/06 06:00 pm', 0)
And I need to retrieve a list of those packages which are late for delivery. Now if location was not a factor, I could just use the simple script:
SELECT * FROM tPackage WHERE HasBeenDeliv = 0 AND PkgDelivDate < GetDate()
Unfortunately, in the case of package 5, it is not after 10:30am in Hawaii, so this should not be considered late. I thought about having a table of zipcodes with their timezone differential, but the really big problem comes in when you consider the areas which do not observe Daylight Savings Time.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hi all,
I have created a report in SSRS 2005 which is being viewed by users from different Time Zones.
I have a dataset which has a field of type datetime (UTC). Now I would like to display this Date according to the User Time Zone.
For example if the date is August 07, 2007 10:00 AM UTC,
then I would like to display it as August 07, 2007 03:30 PM IST if the user Time Zone is IST.
Similarly for other Time Zones it should display the time accordingly.
Is this possible in SSRS 2005?
Any pointers will be usefull...
Thanks in advance

I am in need of a format string or simple vb code that can add the local time zone to the end of a time field.. Something like:
9:36 AM EST
9:36 AM PST
This timezone will just come from the machine that the reporting server is on. I don't see this listed as a standard format, and I have come up empty so far in my research - anyone got a solution for this?
Thanks a bunch!

I have used the GETDATE() function within an expression to create a directory name based on the current date. I am in the Sydney time zone and the new day's folder name doesn't change until after 11 am - so GETDATE() is picking up the date and not adjusting for the time zone. How do I either set the time zone within the package or make the GETDATE() function look at time zone of the system on which it is run?

Hi,
I have this simple SQL query which SELECTs the fields according to the criteria in WHERE clause. SELECT callingPartyNumber, originalCalledPartyNumber, finalCalledPartyNumber,
dateadd(ss, (dateTimeConnect + (60 * 60 * -5))+3600 , '01-01-1970 00:00:00') AS dateTimeConnect,
dateadd(ss, (dateTimeDisconnect + (60 * 60 * -5))+3600, '01-01-1970 00:00:00') AS dateTimeDisconnect,
CONVERT(char(8), DATEADD(second, duration, '0:00:00'), 108) AS duration
FROM Calls
WHERE
(callingPartyNumber = ISNULL(@callingPartyNumber, callingPartyNumber)) AND
(originalCalledPartyNumber = ISNULL(@originalCalledPartyNumber, originalCalledPartyNumber)) AND
(finalCalledPartyNumber = ISNULL(@finalCalledPartyNumber, finalCalledPartyNumber)) AND
(duration >= @theDuration) AND
((datetimeConnect - 14400) >= ISNULL(convert(bigint,
datediff(ss, '01-01-1970 00:00:00', @dateTimeConnect)), datetimeConnect)) AND
((dateTimeDisconnect - 14400) <= ISNULL(convert(bigint,
datediff(ss, '01-01-1970 00:00:00', @dateTimeDisconnect)), dateTimeDisconnect))
If you notice, in the SELECT, I add 3600 (1 hour) to adjust the time according to the current DayLight saving setting. Similarly, while comparing in WHERE clause, I subtract 14400 seconds (4 hours) to adjust the comparison according to EST (-5 GMT, but doing -4 GMT since daylight saving) and daylight saving.
Also, dateTimeConnect and dataTimeDisconnect fields save time in UTC seconds.
Now this application may be used by clients in different timezones. The application may be hosted on their server which would mean a different time zone. What would be the best way to make this time zone and daylight adjustment more dynamic instead of hardcoding the values.

Most developers running SharePoint in integrated mode have been experincing issues when displaying SRS reports in a web site other than the default zone.
There is a blog http://www.sharepointblogs.com/nrdev/archive/2007/06/21/ssrs-in-sharepoint-2007-site-using-forms-based-authentication-sharepoint-integrated-mode.aspx that explains that this is a bug and may be fixed when SP3 is released.
We are usi ng dual authentication for a particular site that hosts SRS reports and the default zone is windows auth and the internet zone is FBA. Since we cannot display reports using the RSViewerPage.aspx that comes with RS sharepoint addon, I decided to look for some way to display these reports in a non default zone. This method may help those experincing ths issue but the method assumes that you have one default zone or default zone [0] is the zone where reports are deployed from Visual Studio.
Here are the steps.
1. Go to your Layouts/reportseerver folder in your MOSS installation.
2. make a backup of RSViewerPage.aspx
3. Open RSViewerPage.aspx in visual studio and on the header declarations change the following line that looks like
<%@ Page language="C#" Codebehind="RSViewerPage.aspx.cs" AutoEventWireup="false" Inherits="Microsoft.ReportingServices.SharePoint.UI.RSViewerPage,Microsoft.ReportingServices.SharePoint.UI.ServerPages,Version=9.0.242.0,Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91" %>
to
<%@ Page language="C#" AutoEventWireup="false" %>
4. Add the following script line to the page
<script runat="server">
protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e)
{
SPSite site = SPContext.Current.Site;
if (!Page.IsPostBack)
{
String RelativeReportUrl = Request["RelativeReportUrl"];
if (site.Zone != SPUrlZone.Default)
{
foreach (SPAlternateUrl url in site.WebApplication.AlternateUrls)
{
if (url.UrlZone == SPUrlZone.Default && RelativeReportUrl != null && url == site.WebApplication.AlternateUrls[0])
{
String path = url.Uri.AbsoluteUri.Substring(0, url.Uri.AbsoluteUri.Length - 1) + RelativeReportUrl;
m_sqlRsWebPart.ReportPath = path;
}
}
}
else
{
m_sqlRsWebPart.ReportPath = site.Url + Request["RelativeReportUrl"];
}
}
//add nav
SiteMapPath map = new SiteMapPath();
map.SiteMapProvider = "SPSiteMapProvider";
map.RenderCurrentNodeAsLink = true;
m_breadCrumbs.Controls.Add(map);
}
</script>
5. This script section just points the web part in the RSviewerPage to the report file hosted in the MOSS default zone.
Thats it.
This should work in either of the MOSS zones.

I am using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition & SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
In a database that is role-manager-enabled, you will have some tables like apsnet_Users, aspnet_Roles, etc.
And some Columns like CreatedDate, LastLoginDate in the tables.
My problem:
The datatime values in the aforementioned fields are updated based on GMT instead of the client's local time zone.
Is this the way it is?
No matter true or not, how to fix it?
Many Thanks in advance :)

I've migrated a server with SQL Server 2008R2 and Reporting services into a new box with SQL Server 2014, but forgot to change the timezone to the correct one. I've changed it later, but it seems like the reports are running by the old default timezone. The schedule says that the report should run at 6:30am, but the Last Run column shows 8:30 PM.
I need to fix it without manually updating each subscription with some date/time conversion.

hello again,
This is another pending issue.
It is another package accessing the same database of the same system ("Sage" for commercial and accounting operations).
When run, it gives an error message, as following (also translated from french):
Simba ODBC Driver[CBase]: Very Small/Insufficient Buffer Zone. Data is truncated.
it seems there is a bug in the database, as when we run the same package on another database, it runs successfully.
It may be possible that the database needs a maintenance. Is it possible to advise how to do it, if it is so?
May you help in helping resolve this issue?
thank you in advance.
Leïla
P.S: How is it possible to attach a file?

Hello, all
I have developed a SSIS package using a transaction
1. Users upload excel file to web server(139.223.15.xxx)
2.Excute SSIS package in web server to import excel file to SQL SERVER 2005(139.223.3.xxx)
If web server and SQL server are in the same network zone, the package will work successfully.
However, the two servers are in the different network zone, it encounters an error :
DTS can't enlist OLE DB in distribution transaction. Error Code: 0x8004D00E
How do I set any configurations?
Environment:

I just don't have the skills to work this out...maybe there is an SQL guru out there that can solve this:I can't work out how to do a recursive query so I'm using this function:Public Shared Function FindFriendsFriends(ByVal userID As Integer)Dim iUserID As Integer = userIDDim friendAdapter As New TableAdapters.FriendsTableAdapterDim oFriends As New FrontEnd.FriendsFriendsDataTableDim oTemp As New Data.DataTableDim oContainer As New Data.DataTableoFriends = friendAdapter.GetFriendsByUserID(iUserID)For InLoopCounter As Integer = 0 To oFriends.Count - 1oTemp = friendAdapter.GetFriendsByUserID(oFriends.Rows(0)("UserID"))oContainer.Merge(oTemp)NextReturn oContainerEnd FunctionWith this SQL statement in the table adapter is:SELECT tblFriends.FriendHashID, tblFriends.cCreated, tblFriends.UserOwnerID, tblUsers.UserID, tblUsers.Displayname, tblUsers.EmailAddress, tblFriends.RequestStatus, tblFriends.FriendUserID, tblUsers.ProfilePhoto FROM tblFriends INNER JOIN tblUsers ON tblFriends.FriendUserID = tblUsers.UserID WHERE (tblFriends.UserOwnerID = @UserID) AND (tblFriends.RequestStatus = 2) UNION SELECT tblFriends_1.FriendHashID, tblFriends_1.cCreated, tblFriends_1.UserOwnerID, tblUsers_1.UserID, tblUsers_1.Displayname, tblUsers_1.EmailAddress, tblFriends_1.RequestStatus, tblFriends_1.FriendUserID, tblUsers_1.ProfilePhoto FROM tblFriends AS tblFriends_1 INNER JOIN tblUsers AS tblUsers_1 ON tblFriends_1.UserOwnerID = tblUsers_1.UserID WHERE (tblFriends_1.RequestStatus = 2) AND (tblFriends_1.FriendUserID = @UserID)I want to replace the SQL statement with a recursive query that I simply pass the UserID to and get rid of the function which is very inefficient!

Ok, here's the problem. I have CA's Unicenter ServiceIT Enterprise Edition 5.0 running on a production box that has NT4 (SP6) and SQL server 2000 running on it.
Just before we continue, this is about backing up the database that ServiceIT connects to.
I know that you can schedule EM to make backup's of a specific database over a certain time, but this is part of the problem. What i have since discovered is that ServiceIT will not run on a database backed up and restored by EM.
It will however run on the restored backup created through the dos command pdm_backup (comes with ServiceIT).
What i am trying to figure out is to try a find a way that i can run a dos prompt command to do the following tasks at a specific time of day:
Stop the Paradigm Server Daemons (service)
Run a DBCC CHECKDB on the database AHDTEST50.
If there are no errors, create a verbose backup using the dos command pdm_backup -v -fC:ackup[todaysdate]
If there are errors run a script to correct them, then run a backup
Restart the Paradigm Server Daemons

Hi all
I am fishing for ideas on the following scenario and hope someone can point me in the best direction.
I create a new table and insert data from relevant other tables but i want to set the data in the new table colums to set widths that have leading zeros where applicable.
I.E the new table column is varchar (10) the data going in to the column is coming from another table where the size was varchar (8) but the data was only 2 characters in size so i want to pad it out to the full new varchar (10) with leading zeros if that makes sence.
I am really just trying to get some ideas on the best possible way to do this thanks.

Hi everyone
We've got currenlty around 500 dts 2000 in production.
In order to know in what ETL processes we have Oracle connections, or FTP tasks or whatever, we did a VB6 app using dtspkg.dll which load all the properties for each DTS into Sql server tables. So that, then you could see from a specific DTS how many connections, Sql Tasks it had and so on..
How to accomplish the same with SSIS? I know, doing the same but using .Net, of course, but is there any else approximation? I am little bit concerned when we will have hundreds of them up.
Maybe 2005 is offering this feature automatically, I don't know.
Thanks in advance for your time/advices/ideas,

I have four tables in two completely separate networks {AB} {CD} and I want to populate one of the tables D based on the information from tables A and C with the following scenario I get data from from table A make a lookup transformation to check what did has changed if the data has changed or if there is a new entry in table A get the identity key from table C {they both share a common field} and add the identity key as part of my data inserted in table D
A ----lookup <
data that has changed --- get the identity key from C ---- insert data from table A + identity key into D

Since you cannot change variables until the post execute, what are my options?
Hope that's clear

I have some performance issues which I can not explain; The database it is running on on a dedicated SQL server box with 8 cpu€™s 4 GB memory. Users are connecting with a fat client.
There is hardly on users using it but they are getting long delays. So I kicked of a profiler trace and sp_blocker. I noticed some queries taking over 30 sec to complete in profiler but when I run them in query analyzer they run in under a second.
I check the output from the blocker and there was no blocking over that time period and it was the only processes actually running.
How can it be so slow I have run out of ideas please any ideas would be welcome
Many thanks

Hello guy!
I wrote a stored procedure that searches for user on my table depending on the search option chosen by the person doing the search. But my challenge is displaying users without a picture. On my members table, i used -1 to indicate a user that doesn't have or set his/her picture, this makes it difficult for me to track that person when the person searching chooses to display members with or without pictures. What happen is that my inner join of the photos table dat reference the user primarypictureid does not exist in the photos table. How do i overcome this challenge. My script
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[spSearchMember]
@username nvarchar(30),
@searchfor char(1),
@firstage int,
@secondage int,
@countryid varchar(50),
@withpicture nvarchar(5)
AS
IF(@withpicture = 'False')
SET @withpicture = '%[0-9]'
IF (@withpicture = 'True')
SET @withpicture = '%[0-9][^-]'
IF(@countryId = '-1')
SET @countryid = '%'
BEGIN
SELECT m.UserName, m.MemberId, m.Gender, m.PrimaryPictureId, DATEDIFF(year,m.BirthDate,GETDATE()) AS 'Age',
c.CountryName, p.PicFileName
FROM Members AS m

I have a challenge for all DBAs. I am getting INCONSISTENT TIMINGS for Querry Results from a SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition on a HP Proliant 2 CPU Server with 4 GB RAM and SCSI DrivAFAe.
Our Database is 72 million records and have 8 columns. Most of them are indexed, which are used in the “Where… clause. In addition to independent indexes, we also have a covering index for 3 most frequently searched fields.
My challenge is that out of the 7000 odd queries that hit the server with various search conditions in a Week, 5% of the queries return result in less than a minute.
The same query at a different Time or with a different Value, returns results inconsistently. For e.g. searching FirstName = “Anna; LastName = “Williams returns result in 0.01 sec. Searching for FirstName “Benjamin; LastName = “Watson returns in 5 minutes.
Any kind of help is welcome and will be highly appreciated.
