Timeout Errors When Execution Long Running Procedure
Apr 21, 2007
When I execute a long running procedure, I get timeout errors when other users try to execute other procedures with UPDATE or INSERT statements.
I suspect that the other procedures are trying to execute DML statements on tables that are locked by the long running procedure.
I have a sharred trigger on all my tables that creates and updates records in tables AuditLogDetails and AuditLogParent for keeping a log of modifications. I suspect that tables AuditoLogDetails and AuditLogParent are locked by the long running procedure.
How can I change the LOCKING behavior of the long running procedure to fix the time out errors that I get?
The long running procedure is displayed below.

Hi,
We have built two testing apps for sending and receiving files across the network reliably using SQL Express as the database backend. The apps seem to be working fine under light load. However during stress test, we always get the following exception:
"System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."
During stress test, both the sender and receiver are running on the same machine. Sender creates file fragments, store them in the sender database and then send out to the network. File fragments will be deleted from the sender database when the sender receives acknowledgement from the receiver. On the receiver side, file fragments will be stored in the receiver database as they are coming in from the network. Corresponding file fragments will be deleted from the receiver database when a complete file is received.
There is maximum of about 1500 updates and 1500 deletes per second on the sender database. On the receiver side, maximum is about 300 updates and 300 deletes per second. Our goal is to send 30 GB of data (it should run for about 10 hrs). As said before we never have a good completed test run, a "timeout" exception is always thrown from the sender app (when it tries to end a transaction). It could happen as early as 1.5 hrs after we started the test. Note that although we are sending 30 GB of data, but at any point in time the database shouldn't be too big (should be well within 4 GB limit) because we delete file fragments relatively soon.
Next we changed the "Query Wait" setting in the Management Studio Advanced setting from the default "-1" to a very big number, then we have a successful run of sending 30 GB of data.
- First of all, are we not doing this properly in terms of dealing with SQL Express? Is SQL Express able to handle long running heavy load transactions for hours?
- We also noticed even before we got the timeout exception, the memory usage of sqlserver.exe keeps growing. Maybe it doesn't have a chance to cleanup internally. If the app hammers SQL Express for hours, I wonder how does it handle fragmentation? I assume it needs some sort of de-fragmenation, otherwise performance will degrade significantly...
- Seems like the Query Wait setting plays an important role here, any guideline on how to pick a reasonable value? Or should we pick a relatively small number and then do re-try in our app when we get timeout exceptions?
- Is it possible that we are running into some SQL Express resource limits? Any idea of how can we tell other than the VM size of sqlserver.exe?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks very much
W Wong

I have a stored procedure being called from Visual Cafe 4.0 that takes over 30 minutes to run. Is there any way to backround this so that control returns to the browser that the JFC Applet is running in? The result set is saved to local disk and an email message sent to the user on completion.
Thanks, Dave.

I have a stored procedure in SQL 2005 that purges data, and may take a few minutes to run. I'd like to report back to the client with status messages as the sp executes, using PRINT statements or something similar. I imagine something similar to BACKUP DATABASE, where it reports on percentage complete as the backup is executing.
I can't seem to find any information on how to do this. All posts on this subject state that it's not possible; that PRINT data is returned after the procedure executes. However it would seem possible since BACKUP DATABASE, for example, does this.
Is there any way to send status type messages to the client as the sp is executing??
Thanks.

I have a vendor database that has a stored procedure that runs a long time.Eventually, the database runs out of log space.
Setting the database to FULL and doing frequent log backups does not work.
The log does not get truncated during this log backups.
The stored procedure in question has SET XACT_ABORT ON statement at the beginning.

Hi,
I'm running a CLR stored procedure through my web using table adapters as follows:
res = BLL.contractRateAdviceAdapter.AutoGenCRA() 'with BLL being the business logic layer that hooks into the DAL containing the table adapters.
The AutoGen stored procedure runs fine when executed directly from within Management Studio, but times out after 30 seconds when run from my application. It's quite a complex stored procedure and will often take longer than 30 seconds to complete.
The stored procedure contains a number of queries and updates which all run as a single transaction. The transaction is defined as follows:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
options.IsolationLevel = Transactions.IsolationLevel.ReadUncommittedoptions.Timeout = New TimeSpan(1, 0, 0)
Using scope As New TransactionScope(TransactionScopeOption.Required, options)
'Once we've opened this connection, we need to pass it through to just about every
'function so it can be used throughout. Opening and closing the same connection doesn't seem to work
'within a single transactionUsing conn As New SqlConnection("Context Connection=true")
conn.Open()
ProcessEffectedCRAs(dtTableInfo, arDateList, conn)
scope.Complete()
End Using
End Using
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I said, the code encompassed within this transaction performs a number of database table operations, using the one connection. Each of these operations uses it's own instance of SQLCommand. For example:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dim dt As DataTable
Dim strSQL As StringDim cmd As New SqlCommand
cmd.Connection = conn
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text
cmd.CommandTimeout = 0Dim rdr As SqlDataReaderstrSQL = "SELECT * FROM " & Table
cmd.CommandText = strSQL
rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader
SqlContext.Pipe.Send(rdr)
rdr.Close()
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each instance of SQLCommand throughout the stored procedure specifies cmd.CommandTimeout = 0, which is supposed to be endless. And the fact that the stored procedure is successful when run directly from Management studio indicates to me that the stored procedure itself is fine. I also know from output messages that there is no issues with the database connection.
I've set the ASP.Net configuration properties in IIS accordingly.
Are there any other settings that I need to change?
Can I set a timeout property when I'm calling the stored procedure in the first place?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

If I start a long running query running on a background thread is there a way to abort the query so that it does not continue running on SQL server?
The query would be running on SQL Server 2005 from a Windows form application using the Background worker component. So the query would have been started from the background workers DoWork event using ado.net. If the user clicks an abort button in the UI I would want the query to die so that it does not continue to use sql server resources.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks

Hi all,
If I use the following query for a Dataset and the execution takes a few seconds to show results
SELECT *
FROM dbo.ICParameter
WHERE (PatientID = @ID ) AND (LogTime > DATEADD(day, -1, GETDATE()))
ORDER BY LogTime
If I replace '99010200101' with @ID and enter '99010200101' when prompted for ID, the execution takes forever. Actually I have never got any results even after waiting for 10 minutes.
Could anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi all,
I have a query, rather complex one to deal with more than 1 million rows, used to run 40 minutes in SQL Server 2000 in query analyzer. Now, it has been 10 hours in SQL Server 2005 in management studio. And still has not finished yet! Anything can go wrong here. Basically nothing changes, except for I have my server upgrade from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. Seems something is wrong crazy in SQL Server 2005. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

There is this sp which is used in the webpage, it takes 3 seconds to execute from the
query analyser, but when it is called from the asp page it ends up in
"Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e31'
Timeout expired "
I know it is an General error and there can be many reasons to it,
but on setting a profiler I found out that the sp is called only when the page timeouts,
meaning for some time there is no activity say for 5 -8 seconds and after that the sp is called and
the page timeouts...
There is no rendering/formatting on the page. what can be the possible cause of it??

Or should I upgrade to the full version of SQL, My end result

I run a large support site - which was recently rebuilt from the ground up using the CSK - its hosted on a shared SQL server enviroment - and although bandwith and SQL server usage are huge - it was running fine.
But increasingly badly now - to the point where almost no internal pages will work in anything but the quietest times, we are getting sql timeout errors. This basically means most of the site (which is 1850 odd pages of dynamic) is offline. Since this is a support site and responsible for saving a great many lives - this is a serious serious problem.
the SQL DB, which is shared between the CSK, and a dotnetbb forum - is a little over a gig...big I know - but surely SQL is capable of managing tons more than that?
Has anyone heard of a situation like this - and perhaps shed some light? there are a number of connections that are set to sleeping (about 5-10 at a time) - but they tend only to be about 2 minutes old, and I am under the impression that only if they are sleeping for more than 5 minutes should you be concerned?
I really hope someone can help...because this is a complete nightmare.
Many Thanks,
Harley

Hello,
I am using a VB script active task object in a DTS package
to connect to one of my databases using an OLE DB connection.
I send an SQL string executing stored procedures, and depending
on the size of the procedures I get a "Timeout Expired" error
on execution of the DTS package. I have trimmed and tuned the
stored procedures to be much smaller and faster, but still
haven't beaten the timeout. How do i avoid, switch off, or
lengthen the timeout period?
Thanks, Joshua
PS, alternately, how might I modify the parameters of and execute
DTS packages from stored procedures?

I have problems sometimes with a package.
There is and SQL Agent job that starts a package (from a file system using cmd command). Usually job takes 8-10 minutes. But sometimes it get stuck for a long time (1+ hour).
DTexec process can be found with procmon, but it seems it just not doing anything (And package is not logging to file Start of the execution) After long wait it just runs a package quickly.
I've moved a package to SSIS catalog to try to get more detailed logging, but with no luck.
Job starts at 1 PM, package execution starts at 1:49 PM. Without any messages about the execution in SSISDB log.
First I've thought it might be long validation problem, but when package executes validation messages are there and they perform quick.

I continue to receive intermittent timeout errors from the SendMail task in my SSIS packages. I know that the SMTP server I am connecting to is often slow to respond to due other business needs, so my question is what property is available to increase the waiting period before a tiemout occurs with the SendMail task. I have not found a property in the task that allows me to say, wait 120 seconds for the SMTP server before throwing a timeout error.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

I have a pretty complex query that aggregates lots of data and inserts multiple rows of that data into a reporting table. When I call this SPROC from SQL Server Management Studio, it executes in under 3 seconds. When I try to execute the same SPROC using .NET's SqlCommand object the query runs indefinitely until the CommandTimeout is reached. Why would this SPROC behave differently with the same inputs, but being called from .NET? Thanks for your help!

Hi everyone.... I'm trying to execute this update statement... It takes an eternity... any ideas on how to rewrite or speed it up?
It's a several step process... below is everything that i run, one step at a time. The final update statement is what takes so long. It should only affect about 2600 rows out of a potential 9000. That's why I'm confused on the response time
select d.olddevicename, de.device, d.newdevicename into #temp9
from dns d, devices de
where de.device = d.olddevicename
update #temp9 set device = newdevicename where olddevicename = device
update devices set device = #temp9.device from #temp9, devices where #temp9.device in

Thank you!

Hi all,
I have 3 three scheduled job: one runs onece a day, one runs once per hour, and another runs every 17 minutes. It is a NetIQ application. I just scheduled SQL Server maintianace job last night which ran at 2:00Am and 4:00Am. This morning, I came in office and found all my jobs were still running; and they were all blocked by the first 3 jobs. I had to kill all of them. In this afternoon, I kicked off one of my many DTS packages which runs usually about 40 minutes, but it failed. I tried several times but no luck. I suspected one of user tables corrupted or one of stored procedures corrupted. After I recycle the server, and dropped the table and the stored procedure, and recreated them, the package went fine. The store procedure involves many updates and inserts.
The question I have is: is it possible to cause this problem because I killed the unfinished jobs (especially the sql maintanace job)?
NOTE: the sql maintanace job does not include the backup of database and transaction log.

I've got a server (SQL 2K, Win2K) where the backupshave started running long.The database is a bit largish -- 150GB or so. Up untillast month, the backups were taking on the order of4 to 5 hours -- depending on the level of activity on theserver.I'm using a T-SQL script in the SQLAgent to run thebackups. Native SQL backup to an AIT tape drive.Now, for no apparent reason, the backups are takingon the order of 24 to 26 hours. The backups completesuccessfully -- no errors, just taking an outrageouslylong time to complete. DBCCs check out AOK, noproblems with the database.No changes to the machine. No hardware changes. Nosoftware changes. Weird.Multiple tape media have been tried -- it's not a caseof a tape going bad.We've had no problems with this box for almost 4years. Now it's gettin' jiggy with us!Any ideas on where to start with this one?Thanks in advance.

Hi. I'm fairly new to SSRS, and very new to this forum. I have a report based on a stored procedure. I've optimized the procedure so that it runs from 2-4 minutes (previously over half an hour). However, when I run the report that calls the sp, it runs forever (well over 45 minutes in some cases), and the users basically give up on it. Any ideas of why this happens and what steps I can take to improve performance?

This package it's a master package and execute other packages; I log the start time and the finish time of the package in a table to manage future incremental loads.
I executed the package on sql server where it is saved, but after 8 hours it was running, a new package was started automatically. Then two more packages started .. each every two hours.
I set the MaxConcorrentExecutable = 4, this could affect this strange behavoir ?
Anyone could imagine wath happened ?

Hi,
I'm trying to optimize a long running (several hours) query. This query is a cross join on two tables. Table 1 has 3 fields - ROWID, LAt and Long. Table 2 has Name, Addr1,Addr2,City,State,Zip,Lat,Long.
Both tables has LatRad - Lat in radians, LonRad- Lon in Radians. Sin and Cos values of Lat and Lon are calulated and stored to be used in the distance formula.
What I'm trying to do here is find the nearest dealer (Table 2) for each of Table 1 rows. The Select statement takes a long time to execute as there are about 19 million recs on table 1 and 1250 rows in table 2. I ran into Log issues- filling the transaction log, so I'm currently using table variables and split up the process into 100000 recs at a time. I cross join and calculate the distance (@DistValues) and then find the minimum distance (tablevar2) for each rowid and then the result is inserted into another Table (ResultTable).
My Code looks like this:
Declare @DistValues table (DataSeqno varchar(10),Lat2 numeric(20,6),Lon2 numeric(20,6),StoreNo varchar(60), Lat1 numeric(20,6),Long1 numeric(20,6),Distance numeric(20,15))
Declare @MinDistance table (DataSeqno varchar(10) primary key,distance numeric(20,15))
Insert into @DistValues
Select DataSeqno,T.Lat Lat2,T.Lon Lon2,S.StoreNo,S.Lat Lat1,S.Long Long1,
distance=3963.1*Case when cast(S.SinLat * T.SinLat + S.CosLat * T.cosLat * cos(T.Lonrad - s.Lonrad) as numeric(20,15)) not between -1.0 and 1.0 then 0.0 else acos(cast(S.SinLat * T.SinLat + S.CosLat * T.cosLat * cos(T.Lonrad - s.Lonrad) as numeric(20,15))) end
from dbo.TopNForProcess T , dbo.Table2 S where Isnull(T.Lat,0) <> 0 and Isnull(T.Lon,0)<> 0
Insert into @MinDistance
Select DataSeqno,Min(distance) From @DistValues Group by DataSeqno
Insert into ResultTable (DataSeqno,Lat2,Lon2,StoreNo,LAt1,Long1,distance)
Select D.DataSeqno, D.Lat2, D.Lon2, D.StoreNo, D.LAt1, D.Long1, M.distance from @DistValues D Inner Join @MinDistance M on D.DataSeqno = M.DataSeqno and D.Distance = M.Distance
I created a View called TopNForProcess which looks like this. This cut down the processing time compared to when I had this as the Subquery.
SELECT TOP (100000) DataSeqno, lat, Lon, LatRad, LonRad, SinLat, cosLat, SinLon, CosLon FROM Table1 WHERE (DataSeqno NOT IN (SELECT DataSeqno FROM dbo.ResultTable)) AND (ISNULL(lat, 0) <> 0) AND (ISNULL(Lon, 0) <> 0)
I have indexes on table table1 - Rowid and another one with Lat and lon. Table2 - Lat and Long.
Is there any way this can be optimized/improved? This is already in a stored procedure.
Thanks in advance.

We run std 2008 r2. I've never been able to get to my ssrs server thru ssms as u can see as part of the question at
[URL] ..... but I've found workarounds to this point by knowing how to look at the rs db itself and by having access to the server itself thru rdp with an admin acct.
I'm looking at an error from a user that reminds me of what we used to call session timeouts. They would occur when the user has walked away from his desk long enough for ssrs to delete refs to the report he just ran.
I logged into the server itself hoping to find both exec and session timeout params via the rs config tool but did not see them there. What the config file is called and where i'd likely find it? Or perhaps a query I could use to see what the current values are?
