Timeout Problem With Large Update Query From VB.Net To SQL Server 2000

Jul 20, 2005

Hi all,

I am doing some large updates,
that may update 10,000 plus rows.

This works fine when I execute the SQL directly
in Query Analyzer.

If I set the timeout on my VB connection to 0 (zero)
the connection should not time out????

But it does.

If I set the time out to a high value, say 1200,
I get the same problem well within 1200 seconds.

Also, I am getting the problem that the log fills up,
but it is set to auto grow????

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks
Greg

RESTORE DATABASE Timeout In SQL 2000 With Large Backup Files

Sep 11, 2007

Hello,

I am attempting to restore the database from within VB.NET application I am making the following 3 calls:

RESTORE FileListOnly FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat'

USE Master RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat' WITH NORECOVERY, MOVE 'MyDatabase' TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataMyDatabase.mdf', MOVE 'MyDatabase_log' TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataLDFMyDatabase.ldf', REPLACE

RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat'

using SMO. This logic works fine with small *.dat files, however when using *.dat file of about 4Gb I get an error on the 3d restore database call:

ExecuteNonQuery failed for Database 'master'.

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.

Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

Operator aborted backup or restore. See the error messages returned to the console for more details.

The same program/logic also works fine when I use MS SQL 2005 and it runs fine from MS SQL 2005 Query Analyzer for both 2005 and 2000 databases. There seem to be only problem with MS SQL 2000 from within VB.NET. Anybody has any idea? I'd appreciate any response. Thanks

Use Update Query In SQL Server 2000 ?

Sep 15, 2006

I have two tables in an inner join. I'm detailing the tables with some of their fields below. These tables are in a database I'm creating to manage backup tapes. Most importantly, this database will inform me when backup tapes which have already been used can be recycled (e.g. after all the jobs on the tape are over 28 days old). I want to write something which will look at each tape in turn and, if all related backup jobs on that tape are aged, the tape status will be changed from Active to Spare.

Tapes
--TapeNo
--Status (Spare / Assigned)

Jobs
--JobNo
--Name
--Description
--TapeNo
--AgedJob (BIT field indicating whether or not the job has aged)

Each tape can have 0, 1 or many jobs and each job can be on more than one tape.

Anyway, I have the tables and relationsips set up and they're ok. Again, what I'm struggling with is how I take each tape and look at all its jobs and, if all have aged, change the Status for the tape to Spare. I'm using SQL Server 2000 (Access 2003 as front end) and am pretty new to SQL. I was thinking this could be done by using some kind of update query and subquery, but I'm stumped. Could someone please help ?

SQL Server 2000 Timeout

Jul 3, 2006

I have been trying to do a query(view) in Enterprise Manger and QueryAnalyzer with a timeout result everytime. In EM in happens in about30 seconds and in QA it happens in about 45 seconds.I am running the query directly on a W2003SBS server with SQL Server2000 (V 8.00.2039 )running on the server. The message is simply[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expiredI have set all the time out properties I have seen and that have beenmentioned in these forums to no avail.I have tried rewriting several of these queries also to no avail.I am working with a database of 140 million records and have indexedall the pertinent fields.I have seen some info up here about a bug in SQL 2000 that impacts EMand not QA (Q247070), but I can't QA to work either. I seem to haveno impact on the length of the timeout. The query is not thatcomplicated, but does go against 140M records. I should be able toset thetimeout longer to let this run.Any ideas. Thanks,Brad

SQL Server 2008 :: Update Statistics With Large Databases

Feb 5, 2015

Currently our database size is around 350G. It will grow up to 1.5 TB

We have the

Auto create statistics option :True,
auto update statistics option :True,
auto update statistics asynchronously option : False

at database level

we have a weekly job, update statistics running very long time. It is created through maintenance plan using the option full scan.

Previously they tested with sampling but instead of full scan running with the sampling effected the queries.

Is there option to avoid the long time job duration.

If we didn't run the statistics manually what will happen? How do you maintain statistics with large databases

Querying Large Text Fields Resulting In Timeout Error

May 16, 2007

Hello:

I have designed a CV database with complete CV stored in a TEXT field. There is a keyword search which queries the TEXT field also. The query conditions are defined in T-SQL submitted through an ASP page. There is about 20,000 records now. Now while querying the database for keyword search I am receiving time out errors. Is there any solution other than Index server to rectify this situation. How can I speed up the query execution time. Please advise.

Bizarre SQL Server 2000 Timeout Issue

Jan 22, 2008

Background: We have an Asp.Net page where you enter a serial number (for a part my company manufactures), and it performs some updates to the data. Before it does, it does some simple selects for validation.Problem: Testers reported that the page will work fine for a while (5 minutes?), but then suddenly start throwing command timeout exceptions. I discovered that the timeouts always occur at the same validation query. Other queries are executed before this one, and they never timeout. The query is nothing fancy. It joins five tables, has a simple where clause, and selects a count of the records. It runs in Management Studio in under one second. The system is in a development environment under very little load. There's never a valid reason for the timeout. The where clause is parameterized, and the query itself is stored in our data access layer as a string. We execute it using SqlHelper's ExecuteScalar method. There's truly nothing remarkable about the query or how we execute it.After some playing with the page for a bit, and getting lots of successes, I'll get the timeout myself, and it will continue to occur for each additional attempt. If I let the system "rest" for a period of time (a couple of hours), it will be working again. The fun bit: When the system is in "timeout mode", if I go into our data access layer and add a single space character anywhere in the command text (where it has no semantic meaning) the timeouts go away. Take the extra space out, timeout again. Put it back in, no timeout. I did this (jaw agape) for a dozen times and the result was always the same!In previous attempts at debugging this problem, it would be in "timeout mode" and I'd make a semantic change to the query (hoping to fix it) and the problem would go away. I'd tell the testers it was fixed just to have them come back a day later and say it's not. That's what made me finally try the whitespace idea. Changing the string itself made the problem go away temporarily. What I do understand about this:SQL Server will cache the execution plan of a text query, and re-use it on successive queries. It probably caches it based on some hash of the query (just a guess), and changing one character would cause the hashing function to generate a different hash, hence it's a "different" query to SQL Server. So it won't use the same cached execution plan, and will make a new one. If the original execution plan was somehow borked, then that would explain why the timeouts return once I put the query back to it's exact original form. ('Cause it will use that same broken execution plan). This would also explain why letting the system rest would alleviate the problem. I imagine the execution plan eventually expires from the cache. One more thing: If I stop using SqlHelper, and contruct the SqlCommand myself, I can specify a command timeout. If I set it really high, it will eventually complete the query. It will just never do it within the default command timeout period. What exactly is going on is a mystery to me. I thought of a fix: Make the query non-constant and append a random comment at the end to make it appear different each time to SQL Server! LOL! If it came to that, I would immediately submit my own code to TheDailyWTF.com. :D

Sql 2005 Updating Table Definition With 'large' Amounts Of Data - Timeout

Feb 4, 2006

I'm trying to move my current use of an sql 2000 db to sql 2005.

I need to update a table definition (to change a field to an Identity)

I'm getting a dialog box (in SQL server management studio) on save saying :

'xxxx' table

- Saving Definition Changes to tables with large amounts of data could
take a considerable amount of time. While changes are being
saved, table data will not be accessible.

I press 'Yes' to the dialog box.

After 35 seconds, I get another dialog box saying:

'xxxx' table

- Unable to modify table.

Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

Well, the server is responding and I can query that talbe and other, I
can add/delete rows to other columns. I can modify other
(smaller) tables.

Any ideas where I can change this timeout?

SQL Server 2012 :: How To Quickly Update / Insert 3M Records In Large Table

Mar 28, 2015

Our system runs a SQL Server 2012 DB, it has a table (table_a) which has over 10M records. Our system have to receive data file from previous system daily which contains approximate 3M updated or new records for table_a. My job is to update table_a with the new data.

The initial solution is:

1 Create a table (table_b) which structur is as the same as table_a

2 Use BCP to import updated records into table_b

3 Remove outdated data in table_a:
delete from table_a inner join table_b on table_a.key_fileds = table_b.key_fields

4 Append updated or new data into table_a:
insert into table_a select * from table_b

As the test result, this solution is very inefficient. Step 3 costs several hours, e.g. How can I improve it?

Update SQL 2000 Query (converting An Old Access 2k Query To SQL)

Mar 30, 2006

Hello, I have the following query in Access 2000 that I need to convertto SQL 2000:UPDATE tblShoes, tblBoxesSET tblShoes.Laces1 = NullWHERE (((tblShoes.ShoesID)=Int([tblBoxes].[ShoesID])) AND((tblBoxes.Code8)="A" Or (tblBoxes.Code8)="B"))WITH OWNERACCESS OPTION;The ShoesID in the tblShoes table is an autonumber, however the recordsin the tblBoxes have the ShoesID converted to text. This query runs ok in Access, but when I try to run it in the SQLServer 2000 Query Analizer I get errors because of the comma in the"UPDATE tblShoes, tblBoxes" part. I only need to update the tblShoesfield named Laces1 to NULL for every record matching the ones in thetblBoxes that are marked with an "A" or an "B" in the tblBoxes.Code8field.Any help would be greatly appreciated.JR

Deleting Large Number Of Rows In SQL Server 2000

Jan 26, 2004

Hi,

I have some problems with our database which is growing too large, and was hoping someone might have some tips on what I can do!

I have about 100 clients, each logging about 10 000 rows of status logs a day. So after just a few days the db is growing very large.

At present it's manageable, since I don't need to "dig" into the logs more than a few times a day. The system it self is not affected by the size of the log or traffic on the server. But it will increase to about 500 clients in 2004, and 1000-1500 in 2005. So I really need a smarter solution than what I have today to be able to use the log efficiently.

98-99% of these rows are status-messages which are more or less garbage during normal operation. But I still need to keep them in case an error occurs, and we need to go back an hour or two (maybe a day) to see what went wrong. After 24-48 hours these 98-99% are of no use. I do however like to keep the remaining 1-2%, they are messages like startup, errors, etc. Ideally they should be logged in two separate tables by the clients, but unfortunatelly I cannot make the clients change their logging.

This presents problems on multiple levels. Mainly in searching, which often times out, but also with backup and storagespace. At the moment I check the system for errors, and every other day I just truncate the log-file. It works, but it's not exacly elegant......

The server is a 1100 MHz P3 / 512MB / Windows 2000 Server /
SQL Server 2000. Faster hardware would help, but the problem is more of a "bad design" than "slow hardware" problem.

My log is pretty simple, as follows:

LogId - int - primary key - clustered index
ClientId - int - index asc
LogTypeId - int - index asc
LogValue - nvarchar[2500], ikke index
LogTimeStamp- datetime - index asc

I have deducted 3 different solutions:

Method 1:
Simply run "Delete from db_log where logtyipeid <> stuff_I_want_to_keep".

This is the simplest and the one i prefer, but it takes too long time to complete. Any tips to speed this process up?

Method 2:
Create a trigger which runs something like "Delete from db_log where logtypeid <> stuff_I_want_to_keep and date < today_minus_two_days" every hour or so. This will ensure that the db doesn't grow to large. But if I'm away from work a few days we might loose data we'd wanted to keep.

Method 3:

Copy what I want to keep into another table, and empty the log. Sort of like "Insert into db_log_keep stuff_to_keep; drop db_log; create table db_log; " (or truncate, but that takes a long time too)

But then I would be stuck with two log tables, "48-hour_db_log" and "db_log_keep". I could use a view to "union" them so they would appear as a single table, but that's not ideal either.

However, it seems as this method is what will work best for my set-up, unless there are other suggestions??

Method 4:

...eagerly awaiting ideas!!! :-)

(Also, whatever tips and/or links to info on maintaing VLDB's are greatly appreciated. )

Thanks in advance for your help! :-)

Migrating Large Amounts Of Data From SQL Server 7.0 To 2000

Jul 20, 2005

I'm in the process of migrating a lot of data (millions of rows, 4GB+of data) from an older SQL Server 7.0 database to a new SQL Server2000 machine.Time is not of the essence; my main concern during the migration isthat when I copy in the new data, the new database isn't paralyzed bythe amount of bulk copying being one. For this reason, I'm splittingthe data into one-month chunks (the data's all timestamped and goesback about 3 years), exporting as CSV, compressing the files, and thenimporting them on the target server. The reason I'm using CSV isbecause we may want to also copy this data to other non-SQL Serversystems later, and CSV is pretty universal. I'm also copying in thisformat because the target server is remotely hosted and is notaccessible by any method except FTP and Remote Desktop -- nodatabase-to-database copying allowed for security reasons. My questions:1) Given all of this, what would be the least intrusive way to copyover all this data? The target server has to remain running and berelatively uninterrupted. One of the issues that goes hand-in-handwith this is indexes: should I copy over all the data first and thencreate indexes, or allow SQL Server to rebuild indexes as I go?2) Another option is to make a SQL Server backup of the database fromthe old server, upload it, mount it, and then copy over the data. I'mworried that this would slow operations down to a crawl, though, whichis why I'm taking the piecemeal approach.Comments, suggestions, raw fish?

SQL Server 2000 - Issue W/ UPDATE - Single Row Update Returns 2 Different Messages

Nov 11, 2007

I am hoping someone can shed light on this odd behavior I am seeing running a simple UPDATE statement on a table in SQL Server 2000.  I have 2 tables - call them Table1 and Table2 for now (among many) that need to have certain columns updated as part of a single transaction process.   Each of the tables has many columns. I have purposely limited the target column for updating to only ONE of the columns in trying to isolate the issue.  In one case the UPDATE runs fine against Table1... at runtime in code and as a manual query when run in QueryAnalyzer or in the Query window of SSManagementStudio - either way it works fine.
However, when I run the UPDATE statement against Table2 - at runtime I get rowsaffected = 0 which of course forces the code to throw an Exception (logically).  When I take out the SQL stmt and run it manually in Query Analyzer, it runs BUT this is the output seen in the results pane...
(0 row(s) affected)
(1 row(s) affected)
How does on get 2 answers for one query like this...I have never seen such behavior and it is a real frustration ... makes no sense.  There is only ONE row in the table that contains the key field passed in and it is the same key field value on the other table Table1 where the SQL returns only ONE message (the one you expect)
(1 row(s) affected)
If anyone has any ideas where to look next, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks

SQL Server 2000 - DTS Package Failure - Error: -2147467259 (80004005); Timeout Expired

Feb 5, 2008

Hi All,

I've had a DTS Package scheduled to run every morning since June last year, however on Monday and again this morning, the DTS package has failed on two of its steps. This DTS package runs on SQL Server 2000 and the server is a Windows 2000 Server.

Basically, the DTS Package steps that fail are populating a "cache" table from a "live" table and then performing Inserts / Updates on the "live" table from a CSV file depending upon whether data exists in the "cache" table and whether the CSV file contains an "Insert" or "Update" flag. The live table has just over 800,000 rows of data and our nightly CSV extract, containing both inserts and updates, has about 6000 rows.

The error / failure has only happened in the last two days and I'm not too sure if there's any "timeout" feature in DTS and if there is, how I can modify it, or whether this may be something to do with long transactions or temp dbspace running out.

The time that the DTS package runs was modified last week to run two hours earlier (03:00 instead of 05:00) and has ran okay for a few days. I don't know whether this change is a red herring, as I have checked other DTS packages on the machine and none appear to run at the same time.

Here's the message from the third step in the DTS Package (second one that's failing).

Linked Server Query - Timeout Error Under Load

Apr 23, 2002

Hello,

I am researching alternatives to a stored procedure that uses a linked server query that my ASP page uses to retrieve records to the page.

Should I:

Use replication (Data is constantly updated, so a snapshot won't do. Merge replication?)

Break up the stored procedure into subqueries?

Use a view on the remote server instead of the actual tables?

I am trying to reduce the amount of table scans, what is the best way to do this?

Here is the stored procedure I am trying to tune:
(@startDate and @endDate are parameters passed from the web page):

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.spELRMCcardXtionByDate @dcid nvarchar(255), @startDate datetime, @endDate datetime
AS
SELECT Store.[Str#], Store.[Dcid#], E.card_number, E.program_number
, E.start_date, E.end_date, E.card_number, E.event_number
, E.status, E.budget, E.scheduled_date, P.tx_time, P.purchase_amount
, L.merchant_name
FROM (Store INNER JOIN Event E ON Store.[DemoID#] = E.event_number)
LEFT JOIN (Location L RIGHT JOIN POS_TX P ON L.location_number = P.location_number)
ON E.event_number = P.event_number
WHERE (((Store.[Dcid#])= @dcid)) AND E.scheduled_date BETWEEN @startDate AND @endDate
ORDER BY Store.[Str#]
GO

Any suggestions on my sp or anything else that can implement would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Jul 22, 2015

Error below was returned from an agent job:

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server returned message "Query timeout expired". [SQLSTATE 01000]

A linked Server was set up against a remote database to backup a database and it runs perfectly well when executed directly against the remote server but returns the above error when set up through Sql Server Agent. Permissions are good as the step returns success. I reset the query timeout property to zero but error persist. What else should I be looking at to make this work?

From time to time i get this error "Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." so I tried to change the connection string by adding thie following "Connect Timeout=200; pooling='true'; Max Pool Size=200" but still it is giving the same error! so why is this happening ? and what can I do!
btw the timeout expired happens when a stored procedure is executed at the Fill method !
Thank you in advance
Hiba

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Completion Of The Operation Or The Server Is Not Responding.

Mar 1, 2007

Hi All,
I am facing a problem in SQL Server 2005 and the .NET Environment. I have an SP, which will return me the result within fraction of second when i execute it in SQL Server Management studio. But randomly (Frequently), its giving timeout when i execute it from .NET Envirnment.
If i execute it at that same time in Management studio, i am not getting the error. But getting the Timeout when i execute it in the Server Explorere of VS 2005 or in the Application which uses it.
Can any one figure out the solution.

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Completion Of The Operation Or The Server Is Not Responding.

Hi!
I am having a problem with my windows app in VB.net. I am just trying to do a very simple select command to retrieve some data. I am using a hosting server with a VPN.
When i click on the button it keeps giving me the error above. When I use server management express to do the same query it works fine and relatively fast.
So I have tried setting the CommandTimeout to 120 but when it stops, the debugger shows that the value of the COmmandTimeout is 30, although it stops after about 15 secs.
I am really lost and would need some help please! Find my code underneath.
 Private Sub RetrieveButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles RetrieveButton.Click
'Create a connection string to connect to the database. Associate it to a connection object.Dim connString As String = "Data Source=192.168.24.75;Initial Catalog=edenoverseasproperty;" & _

'Dim connString As String = "Data Source=JPCHENOTSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=EdenOverseasProperty;" & _
' "Integrated Security=SSPI;User ID=sa;"Dim sqlConn As New SqlConnection(connString)
'Create a new command and associate the connection object to it.Dim cmd As New SqlCommand()
cmd.CommandTimeout = 120
cmd = sqlConn.CreateCommand()
'Define the command type and the source
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text
cmd.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM Clients"

da.SelectCommand = cmd
da.Fill(ds, "Clients")
'Bind the data to the datagrid
EdenDataGridView.DataSource = ds
EdenDataGridView.DataMember = "Clients"
End Sub

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Completion Of The Operation Or The Server Is Not Responding

Feb 1, 2008

HI,

I am getting this error on web server. My Appication is working fine on my Local Network where DB server and web server are on different machine. But getting TimeOut on web server. I tested the query on Query Analyzer it takes hardly 3 sec (Max) to execute. There is only Select query and total number of records are around 2100 which is not a big data.
I have used Connect Timeout = 180  in connection string which is also not effective.
please tell me how can I handle this exception.

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Completion Of The Operation Or The Server Is Not Responding.

We've been having timeout problems.
In our development environment we have IIS and SQL Server 2005 both running on the same box. We use VWD or our dev server's IIS to run the apps.
What happens is the database stops responding to our web applications and we continue to get the timeout error. I can still execute queries from Management Studio but all of the web apps all timeout.
Then, the only was we can get the database to start responding again is if we restart the SQL Server service.
Any ideas as to why the database would stop responding to all of the web apps but not Management Studio? It tends to happen a couple times a day when we are developing. Only the other developer and myself use the DEV environment.

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Completion Of The Operation Or The Server Is Not Responding.

May 12, 2008

Hi, I keep getting this error. I have a query that takes 47 seconds when I run it in SQL Server 2005. My connection string looks like this:connectionString="Server=server; Database=db; Pooling = true; Connect Timeout=60; Max Pool Size=300;I understand that Connect Timeout 60 = 60 minutes. Is there any other place where a timeout can be set in an ASP.NET 2.0 application? Thanks for any ideas.
