To Have No FAT Partition - Good Or Bad For Server?
Jan 21, 1999
Hi!
I'm installing a new SQL Server machine. During NT Server
installation our NT support guy converted the only 2GB FAT
C: partition to NTFS. So as of right now all my 4 8GB drives are
NTFS. I think it would be better to keep this C: partition in FAT
because, as of my knowledge, having FAT boot partition can help
to boot the machine in case of NT crash.
Is there anything that I'm really losing by this conversion to NTFS or I
should not be worried so much about it? Does it put my SQL Server
databases, database .dat files or NT Server in more danger situation
in case of any crash?
Or it's giving me some advantages?
Thanks
Ninel

Most examples for SQL Server 2005 involve a sales table that you split based on date, i.e. sales records prior to 2000 go to this partition, and the ones after that go to another one. Nice and simple.
Say I have a sales table:
id Amount Date
1 10 1/1/1999
2 9.99 1/1/2007
Now then, I put all the records prior to 2000 in it's own partition.
So when I do something like this: SELECT * FROM Sales WHERE DATE = 1/1/1999
the SQL server will know which partition to look at. Very nice.
Now then, if I do this: SELECT * FROM Sales WHERE id = 1
How will the SQL server know which partition to look at?
Thank You!

Hi,
I'm about 6 weeks into SQL and SQL Server (7) - I was wondering whether you could share your opinions about which language to use as a programming tool for developing apps for & with SQL Server. I'm choosing between C++ (Visual) or JAVA.
I already know C and the DB-Libe contains a lot of it but I'm kinda trying to expand some horizons. I'm ok with either C++/VC++ or JAVA but I only have time to learn (or be good at) one.
Any suggestions? (I'd like to hear what you think even if you say neither C++ or JAVA - maybe VB? What's easy and marketable is what matters most.)
Thanks.

I am having problems getting my last revision number out when i am trying to use inner joins along with the row_number over partition
I am using 2 tables, tbl_acyear_lookup & tbl_targets
tbl_acyear_lookup columns = (pk)- academic_year_id, academic_year
looks like this:
1, 2010/2011
2, 2011/2012
3, 2012/2013
tbl_targets columns = targetID, Academic_Year_ID,Course_Mode,UK_ENROL, INT_ENROL, Notes, Revision_Number
I have one stored proc that uses the Row_number over partition that looks like this:
Select TargetID, Academic_Year_id, Course_Mode, UK_Enrol, Int_Enrol, Notes, Revision_Number from
(SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (partition by [Academic_Year_id] order by [Revision_Number] DESC) as [RevNum],TargetID, Academic_Year_id, Course_Mode, Target_Year, UK_Enrol, Int_Enrol, Notes, Revision_Number
FROM tbl_targets where course_mode=@course_mode) RV where (RV.RevNum=1)
Now the next store proc needs to use the above but i need to add the Academic_year from the tbl_acyear_lookup table also add filter the target_year ='year 1'

I want to move the SQL Server 7.0 root directory from C:MSSQL7 to D:MSSQL7 (same host). I see the startup parameters under server properties could be changed to point to the new location, but Master has the paths to all the databases recorded in sysdatabases table, so at least that would have to change, and sysdevices table points to files on C:. And maybe the NT registry points to some files there too. Anyway, is there some established method to move it? If that isn't practical, at least I would want to move TEMPDB ( perhaps by using the SP_DETACH and SP_ATTACH method ). My main database is already on D: so I do not have to move it. Any informed advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm looking to partition a big table into years.
I have a big table with data going back to 2001.
I need to partition this into file groups each for the last 5 years, and the rest into its own file group
I was going to convert the inherent date time field into the format int(yyyymmdd) and partition on that field.
Is this an acceptable way to achieve this? Is there a better way to partition on date? [not time]

I have a simple table with 4 columns
(idAuxiliarPF(BIGINT+PK), pf(BIGINT+FK), Data(DateTime), Descr(NVARCHAR))that has aprox. 50k rows.
I need to create a partition of the data to join to another table, the query that i have:
SELECT
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY pf ORDER BY Data DESC, idAuxiliarPF DESC) AS RN,
pf,
Data,
Descr
FROM dbo.PFAuxiliar
WHERE Data <= GETDATE()This query takes around 40 seconds to return the results
If i remove the Descr column, the query it takes no time.
SELECT
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY pf ORDER BY Data DESC, idAuxiliarPF DESC) AS RN,
pf,
Data
FROM dbo.PFAuxiliar
WHERE Data <= GETDATE()I have two indexes, Clustered (idAuxiliarPF), NONClustered(pf).
How can i improve the performance of this query?

Does anyone know of any documentation on the performance of partitionmerge/split? Does the merge or split of a partition cause any lockingon the partitioned table? If you were merging or splitting a largevolume of data rebalancing your partitioned table would youpotentially lock users out?

I created two partitions for my hard drive. The C drive which holds all of the Windows 2003 server operating system files and E drive which will be just for data and applications. The C drive is only 30GB while the E drive is 119GB. I need to be able to install in the application on the E drive. I already tried creating a folder on the E partition named program files with the sql2005 folder in it when I go through the installer package. SQL server still wants to be installed on the C drive. Is there anyway I can change this so it gets installed on the E partition. Thank You

Hi - I have a rather unreliable host just now - but they offer .net, sqlserver and SSL for a reasonable price.Problem is, the domain is hosted on a shared server - and it keeps goingdown apparantly because of code which is less than clean, on somepeoples sites. (ie. not closing connections etc).I am considering moving to a decicated server - but at this point intime, cannot afford a full SQL Server licence for it - however, thededicated server does offer MSDE. Is it acceptable to go back to usingthis from SQL Server - for a currently low hit site - ie. around 500hits per day.Does MSDE offer stored procedures (I don't use views or triggers)? CanI just take a DTC backup/export of my current SQL Server database, andrestore it to the MSDE one? What would be the cut-off point for using MSDE?Thanks for any info - also, if anyone knows why UK companies charge somuch more dor dedicated servers, than US companies - I'd be interested. Thanks, Mark*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!

I have to created a script that will add a new file group, add the new file to the group, and alter the the partition scheme and function. However, I need for this process to not cause a lock on the table. Typically I get the locking and issues when I am run the split command. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

Quick question. I am in the NYC area (Westchester) and I am using Cognos DecisionStream to build my SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Data Warehouse.
I want to learn more about complex SQL, specifically for SQL Server.
What do you reccommend? Should I go for strictly an advanced SQL course, or should I go for SQL Server training.
Does anyone know of a really good site where I can find Advanced SQL training?
Also, I want to learn more about scripting and VB. Can anyone reccommend a place where I can get this beginner training.
Sorry to take up your time, but to sum up:
1. Advanced SQL training in NYC area
2. Beginner VB training in NYC area.
Cost is not necessarily an issue.
Thanks!

Hi.I am wondering if it is a good idea to replicate sql server db filesusing frs.I don't really know how the frs works, sodoes frs replicates the whole database from time to time or just theportion that is changed? Also if the db is expected to change very often, and wouldn't it makethe whole system down?I wonder if it's a good idea just to make a backup of the database andcopy it.What's the usual practice?

we planning to create partitioning on existing tables. The partitioning is on date column, there should be one partition for each year.
Creating of new partitions should be automated, and also we dont have any plans of archiving old data, all we want is that new partition creation should be automated.

In this case why isn't datetime works?
