Tranferring The MDF Files To SQL Server 2000
Oct 26, 2001
I created some MDF/LDF in SQL 7.0 containing my DB. After that I did not deatch it from the SQL server 7.0 and physically formatted the H.Drive. SQL Server 7.0 data directory is still on D drive, I just formatted the C drive. Before that NT 4.0 and SQL server 7.0 were running but now I installed WINDOWS 2000 Server and SQL server 2000 on this machine.
Is there any way to access the previous DBs (MDF/LDF) and put it into the SQl server 2000.
Thanking you in anticipation

Hi All
I have this table which has about 30 thousand records
I want to send all the records everyday at night to the other interface(TIBCO) in form of XML.
I can send all the records at once or maybe 10 records at a time
1. If I make one XML with all the records and send it, its risky as XML would be quite big, also it would be time consuming and would generate a big load on the program(.NET program will create XML). Also, any abnormal error would kill the whole process and we would have to start again
2. Processing 10 or 20 records at a time and then sending the XML(with these 10 or 20 records) and doing this till all the records are sent. If there is any error in between in the program(.NET), the program can start from that step again. Now the problem is how I can keep track of the record number already sent to the other interface
Can someone help?
Thanks

This problem may appear trivial to you guys but is troubling me since quite some time now! The problem is that I created a website using express studio happily and it worked flawlessly on the local host. Now I want to move it to a remote server and my host created a database name ASPNETDB for me on the server. The problem is that that ASPNETDB database is virtually empty and I want to copy all my tables, stored procedures etc etc(complete database) to the remote ASPNETDB database. How can I do that? In the management studio express edition there is no command available to copy paste all contents of the database to another database. Please help I am quite confused!

Someone:
I have the need to upload a file via a webpage and then save that file into the database. I would also like to retrieve it and show it to the user.
Can someone show me an example of how this should be done. Also I am concerned of the pros and cons of saving files in the database. Is there a performance hit on the server? Will it make the database unstable? Has anyone had problems doing this?
Any suggestions, samples, and/or help are welcome.

I am trying to transfer data into SQL Server from Excel using DTS.
I get error for a particular field:
Data for Source Column 3('Col3') is too large for the specified buffer size.
I gathered from other resources, that this error is due to some record in the excel sheet for which that particular field is too big.
and it reads only the first 8 records to determine a data type.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q281517
the fix is to chnage the registry value, as mentioned in the above link. But hat is not an option for me, as that slows down the process a lot.
Does any body else has any other suggestion for this?
I have an idea, that worked, but for that I have to manually insert a record on the top in the excel sheet, with a big size data in that field (which gives problem), and then run DTS, later delete that record.
To automate this idea, I tried to do a DTS from a dummy table (with a record with big data in it) to this excel sheet, but it puts the record at the bottom of the sheet. Is there any way to put this record on the top?
Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Nicky

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade from SQL Server 2000 to 2005. The problem I am having is that when I try to attach the existing db files I get a message that says "database cannot be upgraded because it is read only or has read only files...."
Thing is... there is no write protection on the files.
Can anyone advise me on how to overcome this problem so that I can attach the db, please?
Thank you
Robert

Hi gurus,
I've created a linked server (and set up the corresponding schema.ini file) in order to perform bulk-inserts from some CSV text files into SQL tables (from my standpoint the text files are just for reading purposes). The linked server works fine (I can select the data in the files without a problem).
Now the question: is possible to automatically detect when one or more of those files change in order to start the import process automatically? Something like having a trigger created on the CSV files Or there's no easy way to do that so I have, to say something, to create a Job that periodically checks if the files have changed programatically (say, recording each file's timestamp everytime is imported and comparing the recorded value with the current one, or whatever)?
Thanks a lot in advance!

I proposed on a new server that we separate Data Files, Log Files, tempDB, Backups, etc. onto separate LUNS on a SAN with High Speed Solid State Drives.I was told that with the new technology with solid state SAN's that it would decrease performance and that it did not work the same way as it did when you had RAID 5's etc.I thought that if things were cared out correctly by a SAN Administrator they would know how to configure for optimal performance.

I have the need to delete old backup files via TSQL job. Found this solution online:
PushD "
emoteservershareDIFF" &&(
forfiles -m *DIFF*.sqb -d -1 -c "cmd /c del /q @path"
) & PopD
It works remotely if I run it via command prompt. But when I add this to a TSQL job on my remote SQL instance, it runs without deleting anything. What I'm missing?

I thought I would just write a little VB app to loop through all the files in the directory and insert the data into an existing table but there must be an easier way.

I am trying to export the data from a number of MSSQL 2000 tables to UTF8 csv files.
Using the bcp that came with MSSQL 2000 didn't work (UTF8 related), so I am now accessing the 2000 database from within MSSQL 2008 R2 Management Studio and use its Import and Export wizard that does make UTF8 exports possible.
But it fails. This is the error I got for one table.
Code:

Hello,
I am experiencing an issue with SQL Server 2000 Maintenance Plan.
DB Backup job fails to delete old backup files from the file server (I am backing up to the network share - actually, a DFS).
Backup part of the maintenance plan/job succeeds, but then cleanup part fails.
I made sure that service account under which SQL Server Agent is running, has sufficient privileges over the network share by logging in and successfully deleting files in question.
I was not able to locate any log entries either on the SQL Server machine or on the file server machine that would indicate the root of the problem. Even though I turned on auditing for Delete operations for the destination folder, its subfolders and files, I could not find anything in the Security event log.
I would appreciate any ideas on how to troubleshoot and correct this problem.
Thanks in advance,

Hello,
I am attempting to restore the database from within VB.NET application I am making the following 3 calls:
RESTORE FileListOnly FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat'
USE Master RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat' WITH NORECOVERY, MOVE 'MyDatabase' TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataMyDatabase.mdf', MOVE 'MyDatabase_log' TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataLDFMyDatabase.ldf', REPLACE
RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat'
using SMO. This logic works fine with small *.dat files, however when using *.dat file of about 4Gb I get an error on the 3d restore database call:
ExecuteNonQuery failed for Database 'master'.
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
Operator aborted backup or restore. See the error messages returned to the console for more details.

The same program/logic also works fine when I use MS SQL 2005 and it runs fine from MS SQL 2005 Query Analyzer for both 2005 and 2000 databases. There seem to be only problem with MS SQL 2000 from within VB.NET. Anybody has any idea? I'd appreciate any response. Thanks

We have some to-disk backups scheduled on our 2000 Enterprise machine - nightly fulls, hourly logs - that go to a network share located on another machine. They were originally stored directly on the same machine as SQL Server, but we changed them to a remote destination within the past few weeks. This works okay, but despite having the maintenance plan set to remove files older than 2 days, old files don't seem to be removed. Understandably, this gets to be a problem when the backup disk becomes filled.
Is there any obvious reason why this option wouldn't work against a network share? I've checked the directory permissions, and the SQL Agent domain account should have no trouble deleting the files.
