Problem With Quoted Identifier On 2000 Sql Server

Jan 16, 2003

Hi,

If you run the following code on 7.0 server, it will send a test file in csv format.

--*********************************
create table ##temp1
(tmp varchar(15))

insert into ##temp1
select 'Erin, Brockowich'

declare @cmd varchar(255)

select @cmd = 'select * from ##temp1'

EXEC master..xp_sendmail
@recipients = '<email>', --change to your email
@query = @cmd,
@subject = 'test-test',
@attach_results = 'true',
@attachments = 'test.csv',
@width = 800

drop table ##temp1
--**********************************

When you receive an email and double click on te attachment, it will launch excel automatically and put 'Erin' and 'Brockowich' in seperate columns. which is good and that is the way I want it.

But if I run this code on sql 2000 server, it will generate a file with 'csv' extension unrecognizable by excel. If you open this 2000 attachment in notepad, you can see that the data looks like
"Erin, Brockowich" (vs Erin, Brockowich without quotes on 7.0 server ), no wonder it is unrecognizable by excel.

I have set quoted_identifier off while compiling all the user sps on 2000 server. But while sending emails from within the procedure, all the attachments still generated with quotes.

How can I get rid of the quotes? We have at least 45 routines running generating coma seperated files as a result of the query and sending emails to the clients for years. Now all of a sudden all the routines got messed up with 2000 upgrade.

Can you suggest any work around?

Thanks,
Shaili

Replication Snapshot Failing - QUOTED IDENTIFIER

Hi,

My replication is failing to apply the initial snapshot because of the issue with QUOTED identifier. The snapshot files for the stored procedure are being generated using the 'SET QUOTED IDENTIFIER ON' where as my store procedure code is using the double quotes for string comparision e.g if @val = "test".

It is not possible for me to change the sps code as there are 1000+ sps exists. Is there any way to generate the snapshot files with 'SET QUOTED IDENTIFIER OFF'

Alter Table Add Constraint Null Value

Dec 1, 2007

I have a stored procedure that adds constraints from a variable:
ALTER procedure [dbo].[addMyConst](@txtAuto_ourlim money OUTPUT,@txtGen_ourlim money OUTPUT)ASEXECUTE('ALTER TABLE [dbo].[tbl1] ADD CONSTRAINT DF_auto_ourlim DEFAULT ' + @txtAuto_ourlim + ' FOR Auto_ourlim')EXECUTE('ALTER TABLE [dbo].[tbl1] ADD CONSTRAINT DF_Gen_ourlim DEFAULT ' + @txtGen_ourlim + ' FOR Gen_ourlim')
This works fine unless one of the variables is null or empty. Then I get the  error: "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'FOR'
Evidendly SQL Server Express sees "....DEFAULT + + FOR..." but I don't know.
I've fiddled with this a long time and haven't a clue how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve

ANSII NULL AND QUOTED IDENTIFERS - Upgrade Problems

Oct 26, 2007

I inherited a system that was started in Access and moved to SQL 2000.  The business has grown and we are trying to replace our older systems with ASP.NET and Server 2005.  Currently, we are trying to make a new asp.net page for searching the database for records with matching dates or date ranges. There are several types of dates to search, so they are all optional.  Set to default as null in the proc.  For each date there is an operator field, such as equal or greater, etc.  The proc only looks at the date if the operator is set to EQ" or "IN" and ignores the date if operator set to "NO"
The proc works fine when running under Management Studio, but fails coming through a SQLDataSource to a  gridview. It works with integer and string filters, but fails when entering the same date ('07/20/2007')  that works in the testing tool.  All dates are actually stored as datetime, and  they are set as DateTime Control Parameters in the SQLDataSource.
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:someConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand="spTESTSearch" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:Parameter DefaultValue="M" Name="TypeCode" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter DefaultValue="EQ" Name="FirstPubOp" Type="String" />
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="FirstPubDateTextBox" DefaultValue="" Name="FirstPubDate"
PropertyName="Text" Type="DateTime" />
<asp:Parameter DefaultValue="C" Name="UserName" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter DefaultValue="NO" Name="SearchTextOp" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="SearchText" Type="String" />
</SelectParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>
 The dates are selected properly in the testing tool, with code such as :
DateDiff(day, FirstPubDate, @FirstPubDate) = 0
I think my problem is based on option settings for the databases themselves.  The old database was set to Ansii Nulls and Quoted Identiers to OFF, and the new ones were defaulted to them being ON.  I noticed that the tool also, sets those options on when creating new stored procedures.
Would this difference be causing the dates to be quoted and viewed as objects rather than strings?  What are the dangers in changing those options on the database that still gets uploads from the old SQL 2000 database and some Mac-based systems?
I welcome any suggestions on how to get my new stuff running while not breaking my old production systems.
 Thanks for the assist!

Remember, the table already exists so when I write the script query then I want to first check the constraint if it exists then I dont want to add the constrait otherwise I will add it.

I was having problem to first add a constraint with the constraint name so I could find the constraint before finding it if it already exists.

Question: Has Anyone Written A Tool To Convert From ANSI-89 To ANSI-92 Join Syntax?

Oct 25, 2007

A question for everyone:
With the introduction of SQL 2005, we now have to use ANSI-92 T-SQL Syntax and I was wondering if anyone had written a tool to convert queries from old ANSI SQL to the new syntax.

We have some code that has to change for the outer joins, but we also have a lot of code that should change for the inner joins. It doesn't seem that difficult to write something that parses an old piece of code and at least suggests a new version. Especially if the conversion code wasn't SQL code.

Thanks, in advance,
Brian

Convert ANsi-89 To Ansi-92 Outer Join

Oct 1, 2007

I've been using this syntax for years on SQL Server and now comes the time to convert to SQL 2005 (90 compatibility). This syntax returns four rows. Basically it returns one row for each servername/component/context/property/value even when there does not exist a property of 'fff' since it's a left join:

Code Block
select t1.* from tblconfiguration t1
,tblconfiguration t2
where t1.component = 'AdjProcessUtility'
and t1.servername *= t2.servername
and t1.component *= t2.component
and t1.context *= t2.context
and t1.property = 'proc'
and t2.property = 'fff'

Result:
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility DuplicatesReport Proc Adjustment.dbo.prcDuplicatesReport
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ExtractAdjFile Proc Adjustment.dbo.prcAdjExtractMFFiles
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ValidationProcess Proc prcAdjValidations
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ValidationReport Proc Adjustment.dbo.prcValidationReport

When the converted (using SQL enterprise Mgr) runs it returns no rows:

Code Block
SELECT t1.*
FROM dbo.tblConfiguration t1 LEFT OUTER JOIN
dbo.tblConfiguration t2 ON t1.ServerName = t2.ServerName AND t1.Component = t2.Component AND t1.Context = t2.Context
WHERE (t1.Component = 'AdjProcessUtility') AND (t1.Property = 'proc') AND (t2.Property = 'fff')

I don't really see how to change this query to make it work. I've searched the web and I really don't see any examples of left joins which use more than one column.

Here's the table definition:

Code Block
CREATE TABLE dbo.tblConfiguration
(
ServerName VARCHAR(30) NOT NULL,
Component VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL,
Context VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL,
Property VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT PK_tblConfiguration PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED( ServerName, Component, Context, Property ),
Value VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL
)

I use this table to define reports and there attribues. The rows repeat themselves except for the Property and Value columns
Here is some of the data:

SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ExtractAdjFile Proc Adjustment.dbo.prcAdjExtractMFFiles

SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ExtractAdjFile RunTime 13:25
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ExtractAdjFile Schedule 2,3,4,5,6
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ExtractAdjFile FixedRecLength 71
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ExtractAdjFile WriteFileHeader Y
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ExtractAdjFile WriteTempTable Y

SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ValidationProcess Proc prcAdjValidations
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ValidationReport ReportClass ReportCSV
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ValidationReport Ids Validation
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ValidationReport RunTime 15:06
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ValidationReport Schedule 2,3,4,5,6
SQLEDEV1 AdjProcessUtility ValidationReport DefaultFileName Adj_ValidationReport_MMDDYYHHMM.csv

etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Sid

Transact SQL :: Declarations Do Not Have DECLARE Keyword Prefacing Variable Identifier

Jul 20, 2015

So I was looking at the code for the proc created by Ola's script and noticed a number of variable declarations happening early on (like at line 10) but these variable declarations do not have the DECLARE keyword prefacing the variable identifier.

Then, a couple lines lower, a new batch of variables are declared, but this time with the DECLARE keyword. I was under the impression that you always needed the DECLARE. Is it a scope thing? Like related to the fact the first set of variables are before the stored proc's begin statement?

DB Engine :: Changing ANSI PADDING On A Table

Aug 3, 2012

I have a question relating to the ANSI_PADDING setting on some existing tables in a SQL Server 2008 R2 database I am working with. When I generated the tables originally I basically programmatically created them by building CREATE scripts within my code. Since I did not explicitly set ANSI_PADDING to ON all these tables they seem to have been created with ANSI_PADDING as OFF. Some of these tables, which I now need to add columns to, contain varchar(n) and varbinary(n) columns.

When I try to alter the tables through Management Studio, SQL Server gives me a warning: "One or more tables have ANSI_PADDING 'off' and will be recreated with ANSI_PADDING 'on'" - this seems to be generated by the ALTER statement which by default sets ANSI_PADDING to ON. Another iteration of the same warning - "Columns have different ANSI_PADDING settings. New columns will be created with ANSI_PADDING 'on'".

From what I read regarding ANSI_PADDING it seems ON is definitely the way to go. I just need to know if changing the value may result in any of the existing data in the table to be changed or may have any other unintended side effect, as this may cause problems for me.

Cannot Alter Column To Make It Not Null

Dec 2, 2005

I have a table with a TEXT column that allows nulls.
Now I need to change it, and make it NOT NULL, but I Can't

And I get:

Is it impossible to make a text column NOT NULL when it accepts NULLS ?

All rows and columns are populated, in consequence there isn't any col with null values

Any idea?

Transact SQL :: Database Null Value And String Null

Oct 27, 2015

We have a case where in we should show date based on conditions for e.g if we had a column defined as

col varchar(10) then we would show col as 'NULL' for some condition and actual value when no condition

Normaly date values are stored here e.g under col 20150901 .

Case
when col>'20150901' then 'NULL'
else col
end as Derivedcol

Note this is an extract process and we are presenting data by pumping the data in a table .

Now there is another similar column -colz varchar(10)  which stores date but doesnt have case condition so whenever date has no value its shows null which is database null.

So whats the difference between database null and string null ?

 How can we show database null for the case condition instead of string "null"?
