i want to change the length of the datatype to nvarchar(8).
what is the best way to do with out dropping the table?

Jul 20, 2005Hi all,I need to change a varchar from 35 to 50. In the SQL Server books online it says that SQL Server actually creates a new table when youchange the length. I ran a test in a test database and it appears theonly thing that changes is the length. All the data remains in tact.The table with the column I want to modify is very critical. Is thereany chance I would loose data if I change the length to a larger size? Iam making a back up of the table just in case. Thanks,Kelly

Changing Char Length In Stored Procedures
Aug 11, 2004Hello all, I'm using SQL Server 2000 and have about 250 stored procedures that use an EMPLID parameter or variable of type varchar with a length of 4. I need to change the length to 10 instead and would like to do so without having to open every sp for editing. Is there a way to do this through SQL Server 2000? Does anyone have a script to do this? Any help would be appreciated.

Error When Changing The Length On DataReader Source

I am trying to import data from Oracle RDB into SQL Server 2005 using SSIS. Created a ODBC data source to connect to Oracle and used DataReader Source component and ADO.net to connect to the ODBC data source.
Under the Component properties tab, the SQL Command looks something like this.
Select ID, ADDRESS, REVISED from ADDRESS
The data type for the source columns are Integer, Varchar(30) and DATE VMS.
Now when I look at the Input and Output properties window,
The External columns has the following data types.
ID - four-byte signed integer [DT_I4]
ADDRESS - Unicode string [DT_WSTR], length = 0
REVISED - database timestamp [DT_DBTIMESTAMP]
The Output columns has the following data types
ID - four-byte signed integer [DT_I4]
ADDRESS - Unicode string [DT_WSTR], length = 0
REVISED - database timestamp [DT_DBTIMESTAMP]
When I tried to change the length of the ADDRESS on the output column, I get the following error.

Hi all,
I'm trying to get an understanding of a serious problem I have with a large DB in production. This is going to be obvious to someone (everyone probably) <bg>
I have a table which consists of numerous varchars and ints but also a Text type field. This table resides in a SQL 2000 Database. This DB currently has a data file size of 16Gb and a Transaction Log size of 17Gb. When I edit the table and increase the size of a Varchar field from 50 to 100 these files grow to more than double their size!
Why is this happening and how can I prevent this?

Is there any way or method to CHANGE the DATATYPE of a column in a published table being used for transactional replication (MSSQL 2000), WITHOUT DROPPING THE SUBSCRIPTION ????
Im stuck in this mess and do have the option to drop the subscription, alter the table, create the subscription and rerun the snapshot or to recreate it by Manual Synchronisation either.
Can anyone help? Has anyone been across this dilemma before and have troubleshooted the problem? If yes, help is much appreciated.
MY PROBLEM:

'MyTable' is currently being published and has subscriptions to it. The PRIMARY KEY column 'id' has an Identity property as well. 'id' is of datatype smallint, however because of bad planning, i now need to change that datatype to an integer to support a larger range WITHOUT DROPPING SUBSCRIPTIONS.
I CANT DROP THE COLUMN EITHER AS IT IS BEING THE PRIMARY KEY COLUMN.
IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY I CAN DO TO ARCHIEVE MY GOAL? THANKYOU.

I'm trying to change the data type on a column in a table that is used for a merge-replication with another (identical) DB.
I get this error:
Cannot alter the table '[Tablename]' because it is being published for replication.
I've tried to remove that specific table from the publication (Publication properties -> Articles tab) so I can change the data type and then put the table back into the publication, but I can't (probably because it's a MERGE rep.)
Any ideas ?

Oct 15, 2015I am trying to make the following update: All the columns are fine except for the 'name' column. datatype for 'name' column in the target table is varchar(30) and the datatype for 'name' in the sourcetable is varchar(40), I cannot change the datatype of the column 'name' to varchar(40) because I am told it may affect performance. what I want to do is just update the first 'name' column of the target table by the first 30 characters of the source table column 'name'
I am using the following query, is it possible to do it or are there any other ways I can update the column without changing the datatype?

Apr 11, 2005Here is the issue. I have ReadOnly Access to a database. All of the Columns are set to NVARCHAR(1000) by default. I cannot change them. I want to load the DataSet into memory and change the DataType of the columns from NVARCHAR(1000) to INT(4). The data is in integer (i.e. 4,5,123) format (but stored as a string), but is coming across as strings. The charting software I am using won't implicitly convert these Strings to Int or Double. How can I change an entire column to Int?

I can write a cursor but its a pretty big database with lots and lots of columns using nvarchars with most of them having a length of around 300 and doing a select max(len(nvarchar_col) from table from few tables return only 12 or 13. So I want to restrict the length of this data type accordingly.

Initial thought was to take Left(field, characters), and Right(field, characters), but now I see I am duplicating the data as I am capturing too much of the data in. However, what I actually need to achieve is in field1 capture the left 1000 characters, and in field 2 take from character 1001 to the end. When I then try joining on a common nvarchar column between the 2 tables, I get this error:

Transact SQL :: Changing Date Formats When Importing Data
Aug 9, 2015I’m retrieving Yahoo quotes into my database and have run into an issue when the dates sometimes change format in the csv file retrieved.
I am retrieving yahoo quotes via powershell, then running a package to import data to my table. This generally works expect when the yahoo date format changes.
In the yahoo csv file, the dates normally come through in dd/mm/yyyy format. I find when a quote is old the format changes to mm/dd/yyyy, just for that particular quote.
When this happens, the package fails because the quote date format does not match my destination table format. i.e. mm/dd/yyyy vs dd/mm/yyyy
When this occurs, I would like to skip the records in mm/dd/yyyy format altogether and have the rest of the quotes imported.
One approach I can think of is to import the dates as a text type and do some data validation / conversion once imported but it feels like adding unnecessary steps.
Is there some other way I can achieve this within the process I already have?
