T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Using For XML Path To Concatenate In A Sub-Query

Feb 17, 2015

how to properly use the "For XML Path" code to concatenate multiple values into one record. What I have is a procedure I've written for a SSRS report that summarizes drive information: date, account, recruiter, times. But each drive can have multiple shifts, and each shift will have it's own vehicle assigned. So a drive may have 1 vehicle assigned to it or it may have 5. If there are 5 shifts/5 vehicles, I don't want to the report to display 5 rows of data for the one drive. So I'm trying to get all of the vehicles to be placed into one field for the report. My initial sub-query will not work because it is possible that it will contain more than one item (vehicle):

Select
DM.DriveID [DriveID],
DM.FromDateTime [FromDateTime],
DSD.ShiftID [ShiftID],
Case When DM.OpenToPublic = 1 Then 'Yes' Else 'No' End As [OpenToPublic],
Case When DM.OwnerType=0 Then 'Mobile' Else 'Fixed' End As [OwnerType],
Case When DM.OwnerType = 0 Then Acct.Name Else CD.DescLong End As [OwnerName],

[code]...

SQL Server Newbie or here either. I'm a newbie as well.

SQL Server 2012 :: View To Concatenate File / Path Names Back To Root Directory?

Sep 25, 2014

We have a hierarchical table of some 2-3k of rows that grows slowly at only 3-5 rows a month, and is never likely to be above 5k, holding file/directory names with an IdParent int value pointing at that items immediate parent or NULL if root

Below is a sample:

Id Name IdParent
1 C: NULL
2 D: NULL
3 ProgramFiles 1
4 DataFiles 2
5 Excel.EXE 3
6 MyDataList.CSV 4

iterative code required to achieve the result I am looking for is best handled in the Application layer, but in this case the design brief is that we must get our results back as a View. Speed of execution and code clarity are secondary 'icing on the cake' issues.

I have tried recursive CTE's and XML FOR solutions but without success, and while I feel the latter is probably the best all rounder the searches I have made and the examples I have read do not seem to solve this particular issue.

Even to find the starting point of the search tree (i.e. the .EXE and the .CSV items) was difficult because the final slash is optional in some of the rows (.e. row 4)

The end result of my view on the above data should return:

Id FilePath
5 C:ProgramFilesExcel.EXE
6 D:DataFilesMyDataList.CSV (note the adding of the missing delimiter between DataFiles and MyDataList)

Transact SQL :: Concatenate IDs Into One Row For Each Name

May 13, 2015

I have the below problem:

DECLARE @t TABLE
(
ID int,
Name nvarchar(255)
)
INSERT INTO @t
SELECT 1, 'Raven'

[Code] ....

Returns the below:

ID     Name
1       Raven
4       Raven
43     Jack

Any names which are appearing twice I would like to have only one row so concatenate the IDs into one row for each Name, like below:

ID         Name
1, 4      Raven
43        Jack

Is this possible?

Essentially the result I'm looking for based on the example would be this: 201011 but I still want this to be an integer and not a string.

In other words I need to Aggregate the 2 dates and concatenated into a new string col string so basically a sum with a group by but instead of a sum I need to concatenate the string. I know this should be possible using stuff and for xml path but I can't seem to get my head around it everything I try concatenates all the strings, not just the appropriate ones.

10-hours
08-minutes
09-seconds

I need to combine the datetime and the int field to get the output as below

Transact SQL :: How To Concatenate Year / Month And Day Into Actual Date

Jan 10, 2012

I am working with a SQL Server database that was set up to store the year, month, and day in separate columns, rather than use a single column for the date. I plan to change this so that we store dates and times using the datetime data type. Until then, for now, I need to write transact-SQL select statements to concatenate the year, month and day to create a date that can be displayed in the results window in the format yyyy/mm/dd.

I can't seem to find any built-in function in SQL Server that will let me do this. Of course, using Excel or Access, I can use the DATE() function to reconstruct the date into yyyy/mm/dd. Is there a way to reconstruct the date into yyyy/mm/dd in SQL Server?

Transact SQL :: Combine Two Rows To One Without XML Path

Aug 13, 2015

I have one table list this

declare @test table(Id int, Description varchar(500))
insert into @test
values (1, '<b>Name :</b> XUZ <br/><br/>'),
       (1, '<b>Type : </b> QWE <br /><br/>'),
  (2, '<b>Name : </b> ABC <br /><br/>'),
  (2, '<b>Type : </b> FGH <br /><br/>')

My expected result is

1, '<b>Name :</b> XUZ <br/><br/> <b>Type : </b> QWE <br /><br/>'
2, '<b>Name : </b> ABC <br /><br/> <b>Type : </b> FGH <br /><br/>'

As you can see its combine two rows of data group by id. Issue is If I use for xml path('') then its replace my html tags <b> to like <b> so after that then I again i need to replace all these symbols. Is it possible to get expected result without using xml path or if we use xml path then still my html tag leave as it is.

Transact SQL :: HierarchyID - How To Give A Column Name For Node Path

Aug 19, 2015

I just started learning HierarchyID and copied the the following code from [URL] .... and Chapter 7 Hierarchical Data and the Relational Database of the book "Programming Microsoft SQL Server 2012", written by L. G. Lobel and A. J. Brust (Published by Microsoft Press):

-- shcHierarchyid_1.sql
-- 19 August 2015 13:15 PM

USE master
GO
IF EXISTS(SELECT name FROM sys.databases WHERE name = 'shcDB')
DROP DATABASE shcDB
GO
CREATE DATABASE shcDB
GO

[Code] ....

I executed the code in my Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Studio (SSMS2012).  It worked nicely. But, I don't understand the following 2 things:

#1: In the Results, I got:

(No column name)     Position    Title
                1       /          CEO
                2 /1/         0x58      Purchase Manager
                3      /1/1/         0x5AC0 Purchase Executive
                4      /2/             0x68       Sales Manager
                5 /2/1/         0x6AC0  Sales Executive

I don't know how to give a column name for the /, /1/, /1/1/, /2/, /2/1/ (NodePath (?) I guessed). How I can give a column name to that column.

#2:   The book lists "USE master  GO .....".  I wonder whether I can do the "hierarchyid" thing in the private database I created!!??  Whether I can do the "hierarchyid" thing in the private database or not.

And if check folder, can use "nul", but it doesn't work for UNC path

If use xp_subdirs like:

Msg 22006, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
xp_subdirs could not access 'ServerBSQL_Backups*.*': FindFirstFile() returned error 67, 'The network name cannot be found.'

Subject: BCM Install Error - Logfile &&amp; SQL Path Path &&amp; MSSQL.1?

Apr 16, 2008

When trying to install Business Contact Manager (BCM) for Outlook 2007, the setup failed and I was refered to a log file in my Local Settings/Temp folder. The log actually says that Business Contact Manager was installed sucessfully! BCM is supposed to install SQL Express 2005 as an instance or as instance if SQL Express is already installed. There is an MSSMLBIZ instance in Services..

Who can I send the Log File to for analysis and the fix feedback?

When I first went into Computer Management and clicked on Services and Applications in the left panel, the error message appeared "Snap-in failed to intialize. Name: SQL Server Configuration Manager CLSID:{CA9F8727-31DF-41D2-975C-887D84903967} This message diappeared when I clicked on Services and Applications again. Under Services, there are 3 SQL services - one is an application that was uninstalled 3-4 weeks ago and I disabled this service. The other 2 are: SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) and the other one is SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) When I tried to start either of the last 2, the message appeared: Services "Could not start the SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) service on Local Computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified. Under Program Files/Microsoft SQL Server/MSSGL.1 folder is mostly empty. So, it seems like the Path in the Registry is not valid and that nothing is being installed in the MSSQL.1 folder. If so, how do I fix this?

How do I get the BCM SQL instance to install and run properly? what do the messages in Services mean and how do I resolve these.

Thank you!

In this first have to  add Col1 and Col2 (Here one day is equals to 9 hours ) so the addition is 31.5

From this 31.5 I should display 3 Days 4 Hours 30 Mins because 31.5 contains 3 (9 hours) days 4 Hours and .5 is equals to 30 mins.
