Transact SQL :: Export BLOB (varbinary Max) Column To Excel Or CSV File?
May 20, 2015
I have a table in one of my databases that stores files in one of its columns. I need to be able to export this BLOB column into either a CSV or Excel file. I am forbidden from using xp_Cmdshell so I was wondering if there was a way to do this in the Cmd prompt.

We have an interface where we receive data from an external supplier. One of the fields in the interface is of type BLOB (the source is an Oracle database), which would be read into our MSSQL database as image. This can also be converted to varbinary, and a typical field value looks something like:
0x70697A5F8F000000789C0DCCBD0DC2301....etc. etc.
However, we know that the origin only contains text, and we even know the text from the GUI they supply us with. The text could typically be "Delayed by 3 minutes because of water damage" or something like that.
What I want to do, is to extract that text from the field.
First, I have stored the incoming data stream in a table, where one column is of type varbinary(max). It looks like this goes swell. But I don't know which command to use in order to get the text extracted.
I have tried these:
1) select master.dbo.fn_varbintohexstr(Myfield) from Mytable
-> Returns just the text "0x70697A5F8...." which I have no interest in
2) select cast(Myfield as varchar(max)) from Mytable
-> Returns just Chinese signs.
3) select cast(Myfield as nvarchar(max)) from Mytable
-> Returns just Chinese signs.
4) declare @ptrval varbinary(16)
select @ptrval = TEXTPTR(MyField) from MyTable -- with MyField defined as image
READTEXT MyTable.MyField @ptrval 1 30
-> Returns just the text "0x697A5F8...." which I have no interest in
Of course, since only text is stored in this field, the field should never have been defined as BLOB in the first place. But the source system is external, and it's a standard system, so we may not alter it in any way.

As the title indicates am i searching for a method to export values of a column to a file (plain text). I have been searching on the internet about it but can't seem to find any information. I am working with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
The values has to come out as they are in the table meaning
aaaa
------
bbbb
------
ccc
-----
to
aaaa
bbb
ccc
I am hoping there is a method to do this by creating a script, telling what table to copy and to save it on file yyy/xxx/zzz.txt

I use this code to get Tiff files from db , but output file seems to be corrupted :
Dim pubsConn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Server=(local);uid=sa2;pwd=sony;database=pubs;") Dim logoCMD As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("SELECT pub_id, logo FROM pub_info", pubsConn)
Dim fs As FileStream ' Writes the BLOB to a file (*.bmp). Dim bw As BinaryWriter ' Streams the binary data to the FileStream object.
Dim bufferSize As Integer = 100 ' The size of the BLOB buffer. Dim outbyte(bufferSize - 1) As Byte ' The BLOB byte() buffer to be filled by GetBytes. Dim retval As Long ' The bytes returned from GetBytes. Dim startIndex As Long = 0 ' The starting position in the BLOB output.
Dim pub_id As String = "" ' The publisher id to use in the file name.
' Open the connection and read data into the DataReader. pubsConn.Open() Dim myReader As SqlDataReader = logoCMD.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.SequentialAccess)
Do While myReader.Read() ' Get the publisher id, which must occur before getting the logo. pub_id = myReader.GetString(0) ' Create a file to hold the output. fs = New FileStream("\Server1shared1logo" & "KK" & ".tiff", FileMode.OpenOrCreate, FileAccess.Write) bw = New BinaryWriter(fs)
' Reset the starting byte for a new BLOB. startIndex = 0
' Read bytes into outbyte() and retain the number of bytes returned. retval = myReader.GetBytes(1, startIndex, outbyte, 0, bufferSize)
' Continue reading and writing while there are bytes beyond the size of the buffer. Do While retval = bufferSize bw.Write(outbyte) bw.Flush()
' Reposition the start index to the end of the last buffer and fill the buffer. startIndex += bufferSize retval = myReader.GetBytes(1, startIndex, outbyte, 0, bufferSize) Loop
' Write the remaining buffer. bw.Write(outbyte, 0, retval - 1) bw.Flush() ' Close the output file. bw.Close() fs.Close() Loop
' Close the reader and the connection. myReader.Close() pubsConn.Close()
Me.Div1.InnerHtml = ("<embed height=650 width=100% toolbar='' src= '" & "\Server1shared1logoKK.tiff" & "' type='application/x-alternatiff'>")

I've created a dts package that exports data to an excel. The data exports okay, but I'd like to make a few changes on how the data is exported.
First, when the data exports to the excel file, it always creates a new excel sheet. How can I map the data to the existing sheet in the Excel file? I have an existing sheet named 'Sheet1'. I've deleted the other two sheets in the excel file, so there is only one sheet. When I created the destination table in the dts package for the data transformation task, I specified the name as 'Sheet1', but when it exports, it creates a new sheet named 'Sheet11'. I haven't been able to correct this.
Second, I'd like to either ammend data to the last row in the excel file, which I'd have to know the last record that was inserted from the SQL table. Or probably much easier, simply drop the existing sheet in the excel file and simply re-create and insert.
How can I do this?
Thanks,
-D-

I have a request to export some table data to excel and the "notes" column (varchar 255) contains multiple lines separated by CR/LF. when I export to excel, the first record with CR/LF messes up the column alignment in excel, throwing off the format from that point on. how can i export to excel so that it preserves these CR/LF. or if not, how can I remove these characters so that excel can handle it?
See attached example

Until SSMS 2012 I copy and paste grid view with header directly to Excel. Problem starts when I try to copy results from SSMS 2012 because text column copy with some format and spreads around sheet and not in only one cell. What do I have to do how to select text columns and how to copy them to excel. IN SSMS 2008 it all works OK.

This seems to happen when the report is not 8.5 x 11 portrait. Any other size or orientation will cause it to put the column on the last page.
Does anyone know why?

I need to do a simple task. I have a oledb source which pulls data from sql server, creates an excel file abc.xls and dumps it with the Excel destination at remote location.
I need to create this file at runtime. However, when i give the location, the Excel Destination expects the file to be there for the Mapping of the source columns with destination ones.
My tasks are
1. Creating a table for the worksheet in Excel connection
2. Select from source table and write in Excel Destination
Will appreciate your response.

I can't find the answer to these problems. I'm using SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. I have a report with 15,036 rows and about 15 columns. It utilizes a table and a report header and footer. One column has data containing hyperlinks to another report.
1) When I export this report to Excel, the result is 14.2MB file. Why is this file so huge, and how can I make it smaller?
2) Is there anything I can do to prevent the inclusion of the hyperlinks in the exported Excel file?
Thanks,
Rosie

I have to export about 50 excel files from different tables. Some tables contain leading 0s in the columns. If I use bcp to export to xls file, the leading 0s will be missing. If bcp to csv or txt file, there will be no issue at all. But I have to export to xls file in order to let client update that xls file and reload to tables again.
Is there any other ways to do this task?
Thanks in advance.

I have an existing MS SQL database (2008 R2). I have a very simple SQL script. I need to run this script on a daily basis and save the results as a .csv file.
I've tried creating a job in SQL Manager - that didn't work. Then I found a tutorial that had me use MS Visual Studio... couldn't get that to function either.
what program I should be using, and how to go about creating this as a task / job that can run on a scheduled basis?

Hi
When I export a report to XLS, I get a huge file size, and performance really takes a hit.
When I copy the Excel Data, and Paste Special - Values into a new excel, the file size shrinks considerably again.
When I export to CSV instead, the file size is halved, and the processing time comes down from 5-6 mins to 10 seconds.
I use SQl 2005 with SP2, so some of the old problems with RS2000 do not apply.
I suspect SSRS uses XML to export to excel. Is there some way I can get over this problem?
TIA
Kar

I am curious what the "best practice" is for exporting data programmaticly from SQL Server to Excel. Is it best to do it straight from SQL Server, or should I do it with in my C# code? My program is going to pull the data, put in the excel file, then email the file. So I could write an SP that gets the data and puts it in the file, then have the C# code run the SP and email the file; Or I could have the code do everything, pull the data, export it & email it.
If it is considered better to have the SP do it, why and what is the best way? ROWSET functions?

Hi,
I got a table with a column datatype BIT.
I export it into RAW file destination.
When I try to import into another server the column is like DT_I4...
Error 26 Validation error. Attributi: SQL Server Destination [2646]: The column "conIntervallo" can't be inserted because the conversion between types DT_I4 and DT_BOOL is not supported. IMP_Sito_Raw.dtsx 0 0
OK, this message is clean but why appends?
Two table are same in all column...seems my PKG cast the column like an DT_I4?
There is some action for correct this error on import, without put on the plane an data conversion task?
I do from RAW to RAW for better performance....
Thanks Alen, Italy
