Transact SQL :: How To UPDATE More Than 500 Records In One Call
Aug 13, 2015
I have following query which is created dynamically as -
UPDATE BUILDTABLE SET BUILD_ID = '984137' WHERE SET_NUMBER = '1889147436' AND SEND_DATE = '1941-03-04';
UPDATE BUILDTABLE SET BUILD_ID = '984137' WHERE SET_NUMBER = '1115509374' AND SEND_DATE = '1991-09-01';
UPDATE BUILDTABLE SET BUILD_ID = '984137' WHERE SET_NUMBER = '1515579671' AND SEND_DATE = '1941-05-24';
UPDATE BUILDTABLE SET BUILD_ID = '984137' WHERE SET_NUMBER = '1795509670' AND SEND_DATE = '1958-01-14';
UPDATE BUILDTABLE SET BUILD_ID = '984137' WHERE SET_NUMBER = '1915508672' AND SEND_DATE = '1961-09-07';
Here till " UPDATE BUILDTABLE SET BUILD_ID = '984137'" is the same clause for all queries, but "where" condition is different for all queries. I have to update more than 500 UPDATE statements(like above) in one call. Currently I am concatenating all the queries in string Builder which is time consuming.I want to increase performance of application.Any other class like BulkCopy ?

Every day the timestamp is changed on all rows in one of the table(table has 1 mio records).
What is the best way to find out which query is doing this?
Could be also query which updates only one record(or couple of them) but is executed for each record once.
I have been looking sys.dm_exec_query_stats and sys.dm_exec_sql_text for past but couldn't find.
I can't use event notifications since there is service broker disabled.

I need to update more than one record at once. I have ~ 100 records that I have to update and don't want to execute query 100 times.
My query looks like this:
Update Table1
Set Table1.field1 = ( select Table2.field1 from Table2 where Table2.field2 IN ('a', 'b', 'c')
where Table1.field2 IN ( 'a', 'b', 'c')
It obviously failed because subquery returned more than one value and error message stated that I can't use '=' operator in this case.
My question: how could I update the same column from many records in one execution?

The query is currently counting the # of rows for all payers together and updating 3 as # of payers. I need it to count # of rows for each payer like shown inDesired result below. I want to update the STATUS column based on min date in my table.
For example – If minimum BOOKING_DATE of any RecieptID is below to 2015-10-01, then Status of that RecieptID should be 0 for all records pertaining to dedicated RecieptID So I need an output in this way.

I have a table with 1 million records. I want to update only 400 records. The update statement is provided by a 3rd party vendor. Once i run the update statement it will update all the 400 records. Once the table is updated the users will validate the table
if the update is successful or not. What i'm looking for is:
1) Is there a way to identify what records were updated.
2) If the update done is not what the users wanted i need to undo and bring back the 400 records to their previous values.
I'm on sql server 2008.

I have my SQL call:
SELECT CallLog.CallID, Journal.HEATSeqFROM CallLog INNER JOIN Journal ON CallLog.CallID = Journal.CallID
There are multiple enteries in the Journal table for every entry in the CallLog table, so I receive multiple records:
CallID HEATSeq00000164 983290904 00000164 983291548 00000164 983295209 00000231 984818271 00000231 985194317 00000231 985280248
I only want to return the LAST record in the Journal table, so the output will be:
CallID HEATSeq00000164 983295209 00000231 985280248
Can this be done directly in the SQL call?

i have a table of phonecall records detailing amongst other things the time and duration of the call. there is a relationship linking this table to a table of handsets and from there to a table of users. this users table lists the start date the user had the phone. as ever sample data might make this easier to show:
PhoneUsers table
PhoneUserID Name StartDate PhoneID
1 john 1/08/2006 1
2 bob 20/08/2006 1
3 fred 2/08/2006 2
etc
Phones table:
PhoneID
1
2
etc
PhoneCalls table:
PhoneCallID PhoneID CallDate Duration
1 1 10/08/2006 25
2 1 23/082006 20
3 2 23/08/2006 20
i want the following result set:
user calldate duration
john 10/08/2006 25
bob 23/08/2006 20
fred 23/08/2006 20
essentially i am trying to link the phonecalls to the user of the phone at the time of the call. i make the following assumptions regarding the data:
the user is responsible for all calls for a given handset from the 'startdate' until the next 'startdate' for a different user, if such a record exists, if not then for all calls after that date
thanks

my Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition table:
name: tblShop
colums: txtDate datetime
txtTime datetime
txtDept nchar(8)
txtName nchar(11)
txtPiece nchar(15)
txtCut nchar(7)
txtGlue nchar(8)
txtMach nchar(8)
txtFab nchar(7)
txtInsp nchar(8)
Background:
This table receives data from exactly 5 different departments (cut, glue, mach, fab, insp). This creates 5 records.
Objective/issue:
Update the intitial record, with the new department.(instead of 5 records, 1 updated record).
Approach:
I've tried, but failed (most likely due to syntactical errors) using:
- variations of IF UPDATE ELSE INSERT
- placed the statement in a stored procedure (but didn't know where to call it from).
- placed the statement in a trigger.
- tried to call the stored procedure from the trigger.

I have a table where table row gets updated multiple times(each column will be filled) based on telephone call in data.
Initially, I have implemented after insert trigger on ROW level thinking that the whole row is inserted into table will all column values at a time. But the issue is all columns are values are not filled at once, but observed that while telephone call in data, there are multiple updates to the row (i.e multiple updates in the sense - column data in row is updated step by step),
I thought to implement after update trigger , but when it comes to the performance will be decreased for each and every hit while row update.
I need to implement after update trigger that should be fired on column level instead of Row level to improve the performance?

Student.StudentSurname + ', ' + Student.StudentForename AS Fullname,
HomeworkLogLine.HomeworkLogLineTimestamp,
HomeworkLog.HomeworkLogDescription,
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY HomeworkLogLine.HomeworkLogLineStudentID ORDER BY

Inside some TSQL programmable object (a SP/or a query in Management Studio)I have a parameter containing the name of a StoreProcedure+The required Argument for these SP. (for example it's between the brackets [])
EX1 : @SPToCall : [sp_ChooseTypeOfResult 'Water type']
EX2 : @SPToCall : [sp_ChooseTypeOfXMLResult 'TABLE type', 'NODE XML']
EX3 : @SPToCall : [sp_GetSomeResult]
I can't change thoses SP, (and i don't have a nice output param to cach, as i would need to change the SP Definition)All these SP 'return' a 'select' of 1 record the same datatype ie: NVARCHAR. DECLARE @SPToCall NVARCHAR(MAX) = N'sp_ChooseTypeOfXMLResult

I have a stored procedure that attempts to INSERT @BatchSize number of records at a time into a table. Currently, I have @BatchSize set to load 50,000 at a time. The table I am inserting from has a little over 67,000 records.
When I execute the procedure with NOCOUNT left off, the procedure seems to run indefinitely, and the count of records returned surpasses what I have in the source table. However, only 50,000 records are inserted into the table.
Below is my code:
begin try
--error catching variables:
declare @Error_NumberLocal int
,@Error_MessageLocal varchar(4000)
,@Error_SeverityLocal int
,@Error_StateLocal int
,@Error_ProcedureLocal varchar(200)
,@Error_LineLocal int
,@User_NameLocal varchar(200)
[code]....
What is the problem with the looping structure that would cause this issue?
