Transact SQL :: How To Alter Table To Add A Constraint
Sep 19, 2015
There is a table exists in a database name tbDatabaseProviders.
I want to alter this table to add a column DatabaseProvider Also I want to add a default constraint so if nothing than 1 should be added.
Remember, the table already exists so when I write the script query then I want to first check the constraint if it exists then I dont want to add the constrait otherwise I will add it.
I was having problem to first add a constraint with the constraint name so I could find the constraint before finding it if it already exists.
I have a stored procedure that adds constraints from a variable: ALTER procedure [dbo].[addMyConst](@txtAuto_ourlim money OUTPUT,@txtGen_ourlim money OUTPUT)ASEXECUTE('ALTER TABLE [dbo].[tbl1] ADD CONSTRAINT DF_auto_ourlim DEFAULT ' + @txtAuto_ourlim + ' FOR Auto_ourlim')EXECUTE('ALTER TABLE [dbo].[tbl1] ADD CONSTRAINT DF_Gen_ourlim DEFAULT ' + @txtGen_ourlim + ' FOR Gen_ourlim') This works fine unless one of the variables is null or empty. Then I get the error: "Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'FOR' Evidendly SQL Server Express sees "....DEFAULT + + FOR..." but I don't know. I've fiddled with this a long time and haven't a clue how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve
I have a default constratint on DateColumn getdate()-1
I have used enterprise manager to update it to yesterday's date everyday.
I would like to have a SQL which can check for the date in the system or even a trigger which checks when the date changes the constraint is updated itself. If this is not possible I would like to have a stored procedure which I will schedule to run as a job everyday once.
So if today 6/12/2006, the default value in the Datecolumn should be 6/11/2006.
This gives me a error, i tried but could not fix the bug.
Alter Table TABLE_NAME Alter Constraint DF_DATECOLUMN Default getdate()-1
I need to run the alter table to drop a default. However, the default name is kind of 'dynamic' from around 1000 databases, thus I need to run the following sql to get the name to a variable. Now, it looks the alter table statement does not like to drop a vaiable, is there a solution about it?
declare @radius_default varchar(40) select @radius_default = (select sobj.name from sysobjects sobj inner join syscolumns scolumn on sobj.ID = scolumn.cdefault where scolumn.name = 'radius' and sobj.name like '%LandMarks%') print 'Need To Drop @radius_default: ' + @radius_default --==================================== alter table LandMarks drop constraint @radius_default
Hi.I'm getting errors like this when I try to run an upgrade script I'm trying towrite/test:altering labels to length 60Server: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 4, Line 5The object 'ALTPART_ANNOT_ANNOTID_FK' is dependent on column 'label'.I used this to bracket my script:sp_msforeachtable "ALTER TABLE ? NOCHECK CONSTRAINT all"gosp_msforeachtable "ALTER TABLE ? DISABLE TRIGGER all"go/* updates here */sp_msforeachtable @command1="print '?'",@command2="ALTER TABLE ? CHECK CONSTRAINT all"gosp_msforeachtable @command1="print '?'",@command2="ALTER TABLE ? ENABLE TRIGGER all"goI guess the alter table nocheck constraint isn't disabling the fk'scompletely?Is there a way around this, or do I manually have to do the constraintdropping/recreating?ThanksJeff Kish
we have a table in our ERP database and we copy data from this table into another "stage" table on a nightly basis. is there a way to dynamically alter the schema of the stage table when the source table's structure is changed? in other words, if a new column is added to the source table, i would like to add the column to the stage table during the nightly refresh.
INSERT INTO PRODUCT_SALES (Salesmanid,Productid) VALUES (1,1) INSERT INTO PRODUCT_SALES (Salesmanid,Productid) VALUES (1,2) INSERT INTO PRODUCT_SALES (Salesmanid,Productid) VALUES (1,3)
SELECT * FROM PRODUCT_SALES
/* SalesmanID is reference key from Sales Master and ProductID is reference key from Product Master. How should i restrict user through DB with any constraint check, if user tries to enter
INSERT INTO PRODUCT_SALES (Salesmanid,Productid) VALUES (1,2),
It should throw error , if possible user defined message would be more useful.
I have existing table which is having Set Quoted Identifier Off and Set Ansi Null
Now I want to change those setting so Is there any alter statement for the same?
Also Let's say At my database level If those settings are off and If I convert it to ON then It is not taking effect on existing tables SP which are already build.
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT TOP 1 1 FROM dbo.syscolumns WHERE id = OBJECT_ID(N'dbo.Employee) and name = 'DoNotCall') BEGIN ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Employee] ADD [DoNotCall] bit not null Constraint DoNot_Call_Default DEFAULT 0 IF ( @@ERROR <> 0 ) GOTO QuitWithRollback END
It just takes a LOT of time in SQL Server Management studio. I have to cancel the query and cancelling takes a whole lot time. I am using SQL Server 2008.
I can't seem to get the syntax correct for ALTERing an existing column with a default constraint. I've been to Help and BOL. There are examples that show how to use the ALTER command to add a column with a default constraint but not how to do it on an existing column.
Hi people,I?m trying to alter a integer field to a decimal(12,4) field in MSACCESS 2K.Example:table : item_nota_fiscal_forn_setor_publicofield : qtd_mercadoria integer NOT NULLALTER TABLE item_nota_fiscal_forn_setor_publicoALTER COLUMN qtd_mercadoria decimal(12,4) NOT NULLBut, It doesn't work. A sintax error rises.I need to change that field in a Visual Basic aplication, dinamically.How can I do it? How can I create a decimal(12,4) field via script in MSACCESS?Thanks,Euler Almeida--Message posted via http://www.sqlmonster.com
I would like to add an Identity to an existing column in a table using astored procedure then add records to the table and then remove the identityafter the records have been added or something similar.here is a rough idea of what the stored procedure should do. I am using sql server ce.I am changing my tables sometimes.how to use 'alter table alter column...'.for example:I have table 'customers', I delete column 'name' and add column 'age'.Now I drop Table 'customers' and create again.but I read something about 'alter table alter column...'.I use thi command but not work.I thing syntax not true,that I use..plaese help me?
I want to enforce a constraint on the table where , the same MenuId cannot have 2 different prices for the same date range (accidentally).I think CHECK constraint won't work.
Im working on Partition purge process, where I need to specify following statement:
SET @cmd = 'ALTER PARTITION FUNCTION ' + @function_name + '() MERGE RANGE (@range)' EXEC (@cmd); SET @cmd1 = 'ALTER DATABASE '+ db_name()+ ' REMOVE FILE ' + @partition_file EXEC (cmd1);
I want to put this statement in Begin Tran /Commit statement but getting error that it is not allowed. "ALTER DATABASE statement not allowed within multi-statement transaction"..what are my options to rollback in case there is a failure.
SET NOCOUNT ON DECLARE @RowCount int; SET @RowCount = 0; Begin Try Begin Transaction -------------------------------------------------------- -----Table Name: AlertsStaticRecord_Archive -----Column Name: AlertID -------------------------------------------------------- ALTER TABLE [AlertsStaticRecord_Archive] ALTER COLUMN [AlertID] int NOT NULL;
[Code] .....
But, when I execute these batch, I am getting error:
Msg 8111, Level 16, State 1, Line 11 Cannot define PRIMARY KEY constraint on nullable column in table 'AlertsStaticRecord_Archive'. Msg 1750, Level 16, State 0, Line 11 Could not create constraint. See previous errors.
Because, the first ALTER statement is not getting executed.
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[bkrm_lendcoll] ADD CONSTRAINT ReqdCovgAmt_constraint33 CHECK ( case when CovgAmt = 0 and ReqdCovgAmt = 0 then 1 when CovgAmt = 0 and ReqdCovgAmt = 1 then 1 when CovgAmt = 1 and ReqdCovgAmt = 0 then 1 when CovgAmt = 1 and ReqdCovgAmt = 1 then 0 end =1 )
This is my first attempt to add a constraint for business logic. The desired behavior is that the two columns together have the same behavior as a radio button. (one can be true, the other true, both can be false, but both cannot be true.) I get this error when I attempt to update it.
The ALTER TABLE statement conflicted with the CHECK constraint "ReqdCovgAmt_constraint33". The conflict occurred in database "Std", table "dbo.lendcoll".
So, basically my question is, when you have two bit columns and want them to have the truth table such as described, how can I set a Check constraint to enforce this?
I have a table named [New Item] and created a default constraint on a column, and i wanted to change the data type of the column using the query
alter table [new item] alter column pcs_qty decimal(15,2) not null
but the name of the default constraint is 'DF__New Item__Pcs_Qt__2D12A970' and i am not able to delete the constraint because it contains a space in between.Is there any work around for this.
I tried to delete the constraint by using the query
alter table [new item] drop constraint 'DF__New Item__Pcs_Qt__2D12A970'
but I am getting the exception,
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
Incorrect syntax near 'DF__New Item__Pcs_Qt__2D12A970'.
I've a table with primary key defined as non-clusterd, now without dropping it can I modify the existing index to clustered through tsql as I had to write some migration script and in that script I wanna do this.
I have a table with ~30M records. I'm trying to add a column to the existing table with default value and have noticed following ... When using alter with default value- (Executes more than 45 min and killed forcefully)
ex: ALTER TABLE dbo.Table_X Add is_Active BIT CONSTRAINT DF_Table_X_is_Active DEFAULT 'FALSE' NOT NULL GO
When using update command after adding column with alter (without default value) it completes is 5 min.
ex: ALTER TABLE dbo.Table_X Add is_Active BIT NULL GO UPDATE Table_X SET is_Active = 0 WHERE is_Active IS NULL GO
Why there is so much of difference in execution times ? I was just trying to understand internal behavior of the SQL in these two scenarios.
I'm trying to update rows in a simple table that has a UNIQUE KEY CONSTRAINT defined on one of its columns. Here is the DDL for the table:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[SEC_USER]( [SEC_USER_ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [USER_CODE] [varchar](100) NOT NULL, [USER_NAME] [varchar](128) NOT NULL, [EMP_CODE] [varchar](6) NOT NULL,
[Code] ....
When trying to execute the UPDATE statement the query fails with a constraint violation error:
Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'UQ__SEC_USER__A039F1EE62FE8444'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.SEC_USER'. The duplicate key value is (34337).
What has me baffled is that I'm not doing any insert. Also, the value that it's referencing - 34337 - doesn't exist in the table at all. I'd rather not drop the constraint.
I am trying to create a check constraint that prevents entry of a date range that overlaps any other date range in the table. The below example script results in the error message: The INSERT statement conflicted with the CHECK constraint "ck_dt_overlap". what I am doing wrong?
CREATE TABLE t1 (d1 date,d2 date) go create function dbo.dt_overlap (@d1 date, @d2 date) RETURNS BIT AS BEGIN IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 from t1 where d1 between @d1 and @d2 or d2 between @d1 and @d2) RETURN 1 RETURN 0 END go alter table t1 add constraint ck_dt_overlap CHECK (dbo.dt_overlap(d1,d2)=0) go insert into t1 values ('2015-01-01','2015-02-01') insert into t1 values ('2015-01-15','2015-02-15')
--BOTH inserts result in the following message: The INSERT statement conflicted with the CHECK constraint "ck_dt_overlap".
Hi guys, If I have a temporary table called #CTE With the columns [Account] [Name] [RowID Table Level] [RowID Data Level] and I need to change the column type for the columns: [RowID Table Level] [RowID Data Level] to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time. What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?
I am trying to solve the question in the link below: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2093921&SiteID=1
Thanks in advance, Aldo.
I have tried the code below, but getting syntax error...
ALTER TABLE #CTE ALTER COLUMN [RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1), [RowID Data Level] INT;
I have also tried:
ALTER TABLE #CTE MODIFY [RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1), [RowID Data Level] INT;
I am really puzzled by an apparent difference between table index key column order and its statistics order. I was under understanding that index statistics mirror index definition. However, in my db 2470 index ordinal definitions match statistics definition but 66 do not. I also can reproduce such discrepancy in 2008 R2, 2012 and 2014.
As per definition,
stats_column_id int
1-based ordinal within set of stats columns
This script duplicates this for me.
BEGIN TRAN GO use tempdb GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[ItemProperties]( [itmID] [int] NOT NULL, [cpID] [smallint] NOT NULL, [ipuID] [tinyint] NOT NULL,
I have contract table which has built in foreign key constrains. How can I alter this table for delete/ update cascade without recreating the table so whenever studentId/ contactId is modified, the change is effected to the contract table.
Thanks
************************************************** ****** Contract table DDL is
create table contract( contractNum int identity(1,1) primary key, contractDate smalldatetime not null, tuition money not null, studentId char(4) not null foreign key references student (studentId), contactId int not null foreign key references contact (contactId) );
For the length of Column ID is not enough, So I want to alter its length.The alter statement is:
ALTER TABLE student ALTER COLUMN ID CHAR(20)
For the table student is referenced by table score, the alter statement can not alter the column of the table student, and the SQL Server DBMS give the errors.
But, I can manually alter the length of the column ID in SQL SERVER Management Studio. How to alter column length of the master table(student) along with the slave table(score)?
Here is my issue I am new to 2005 sql server, and am trying to take my old data which is exported to a txt file and import it to tables in sql. The older database is non relational, and I had made several exports for the way I want to build my tables. I built my packages fine and everything is working until I start building relationships. I remove my foreign key and the table with the primary key will get updated for the package again. I need to update the data daily into sql, and once in it will only be update from the package until the database is moved over.
It will run and update with a primary key until I add a foreign key to another database.
Here is my error when running the package when table 2 has a foreign key.
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "TRUNCATE TABLE [consumer].[dbo].[Client] " failed with the following error: "Cannot truncate table 'consumer.dbo.Client' because it is being referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
