Transact SQL :: How To Join Results Of Two Queries By Matching Columns
Aug 10, 2015
I have two queries as below;
SELECT EventID, Role, EventDuty, Qty, StartTime, EndTime, Hours
FROM dbo.tblEventStaffRequired;
and
SELECT EventID, Role, StartTime, EndTime, Hours, COUNT(ID) AS Booked
FROM tblStaffBookings
GROUP BY EventID, Role, StartTime, EndTime, Hours;
How can I join the results of the two by matching the columns EventID, Role, StartTime and EndTime in the two and have the following columns in output EventID, Role, EventDuty, Qty, StartTime, EndTime, Hours and Booked?

Hello all,
I have been using T-SQL for a while now although the majority of my work required relativley simple queries.
I just need to know is there a way to JOIN the results of several SELECT queries, maybe through the use of functions??
A reference to any online article would be most helpful.
Cheers,
Sean

I have a lookup table, as below. Each triggercode can have several service codes.
TriggerCodeServiceCode
BBRONZH BBRZFET
BBRONZH RDYNIP1
BBRONZP BBRZFET
BCSTICP ULDBND2
BCSTMCP RBNDLOC
I then have a table of accounts, and each account can have one to many service codes. This table also has the rate for each code.
AccountServiceCodeRate
11518801DSRDISC -2
11571901BBRZFET 5
11571901RBNDLOC 0
11571901CDHCTC 0
17412902CDHCTC1 0
14706401ULDBND2 2
14706401RBNDLOC 3
What I would like to end up with is a pivot table of each account, the trigger code and service codes attached to that account, and the rate for each.
I have been able to dynamically get the pivot, but I'm not joining correctly, as its returning every dynamic column, not just the columns of a trigger code. The code below will return the account and trigger code, but also every service code, regardless of which trigger code they belong to, and just show null values.
What I would like to get is just the service codes and the appropriate trigger code for each account.
SELECT @cols = STUFF((SELECT DISTINCT ',' + ServiceCode
FROM TriggerTable
FOR XML PATH(''), TYPE
).value('(./text())[1]', 'VARCHAR(MAX)')
,1,2,'')
[Code] ....

I would like to compare values in the same table and get the single record with different values in the multiple columns. For table tab1, ID is my key column. If type1 is active (A) then i need to update X else blank on Code1 column and if type2 is active (A) then i need to update X else blank on code2 column. Both type1 and type2 comes from same table for same ID..Below is the example to understand my scenario clearly....
declare @tab1 table (ID varchar(20), dt date, status varchar(1), type varchar(10))
insert into @tab1 values ('55A', '2015-07-30', 'A', 'type1')
insert into @tab1 values ('55A', '2015-07-30', 'C', 'type2')
insert into @tab1 values ('55B', '2015-07-30', 'C', 'type1')
insert into @tab1 values ('55B', '2015-07-30', 'A', 'type2')

And I can easily enough get the View columns from thesyscolumns table. The problem is that I haven't figured out how tolink a source column name to a view column name. For each customer, I want to add all of their telephone numbers to a different column. That is, multiple columns (depending on the number of telephone numbers) for each customer/row. How can I achieve that?
I want my output to be
CUSTOMER ID, FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, TEL1, TEL2, TEL3, ... etc
Each 'Tel' will relate to a one or more records in the PHONES table that is linked back to the customer.
I want to do it using SELECT. Is it possible?

Hi All
Microsoft released an introductory tutorial for data mining in September 2007, and I was attempting to match the results on:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms169911.aspx
I was not able to match the results, so then I went "under the hood" for the tables, and discovered that my copy of AdventureWorksDW has truncated values in the Education field of the ProspectiveBuyer table. I had wanted to connect "EnglishEducation" from the Mining Model to "Education" in the "Input Table" to see if the additional linkage would affect the prediction results (the wizard does not automatically link these fields because they technically do not have the same name).
1) Is everybody's "Education" field in the "Prospective Buyers" table populated with truncated values? (which may be intentional since it is a sample dataset) -- compare to "EnglishEducation" field in the vTargetMail table
2) Am I the only one getting 0.50580 for all rows when I use "Decision Tree" (per the tutorial instructions)? By contrast, I was able to see a variance in expression values for clustering and naive Bayes.
My guess: everybody has a truncated "Education" field, and there is something different in how the data mining model was run under the Decision Tree option to yield the tutorial's numerical results for "expression".

But when I browse my cube (using the same parameters, or should i say dimension combination) i get different results as compared to what I mentioned earlier

And by correctly, I mean the way it *should* match, of course.I've got 2 data sources, using a left outer join, matching 2 columns. Whatever is the right side of my table is never matching and returning data. Here's my basic setup:OLE DB Source 1 (table1)
Sel Name Order JoinKeyno UniqueID 1 yesyes Column1 0 no
...
OLE DB Source 2 (table2)
Sel Name Order JoinKeyyes ID 1 yesyes Columns 0 no
...
There is a link (arrow) between UniqueID and ID, and the join type is "Left Outer Join". When I execute the statement "SELECT * FROM Table1 LEFT JOIN TABLE2 ON TABLE1.UniqueID = Table2.ID", the data returns correctly to me. What am I missing with the properties I've set above with the merge join?

I have been assigned to write a report that queries 3 tables. Table Store, Store_ID unique index, Cust table Cust_ID non unique index, CUST_Store_ID relates to Store Table, Table Emp, Emp_ID non unique index, Emp_Store_ID relates to Store Table
The problem is that the Employes and the customer don't relate to each other in any way. There can be stores with no Employees and there can be stores with no Customers. There are employees and customers listed multiple times in thier respective tables, and the multiple listings need to show on the report. A result set may look like this.
Store | Emp | Cust
1|1|
2|2|1
2|2|2
2| |3
2| |4
3| |5
3| |5
4|3|6
4|3|7
4|3|7
4|3|8

I tried a full join, but ended up with this:

All
I have a table which contains 4 columns each of which are NULL or contain a 6 digit code.
Here is a sample of the table content:
COL1 COL2 COL3 COL4
----- ----- ----- -----
452359 NULL NULL 347406
NULL NULL 347406 347406
592319 NULL 347406 347406
592319 150009 347406 347406
592319 150010 347406 347406
Through out the table any number of the columns can be null.
I wish to remove rows from this table where the columns values are contained in another row i.e Row 2 above is contained within row 3. Similarly, row 3 is contained within row 4.
So, the only rows I want from the sample data above are rows 1, 4 and 5.
I hope I have explained my query adequately, and any help would be great appreciated. (Before I go mad...!)
Regards,
Katherine

How to return only non matching left join records. Currently I am doing a traffic management database to learn sql.
I am checking for all parishes with no associated drivers. Currently I only have 2 of such.
The regular left join
select parish.name, driver.fname from parish left join driver on driver.parish=parish.name
Returns the all the names of the parishes and the first name of the associated drive, followed by the matches, however the two parishes with no matches have null for the first name.

In Outer join, I would like to add the outer columns that don't exist in the right table for each order number. So currently the columns that don't exist in the right table only appear once for the entire set. How can I go about adding PCity, PState to each order group, so that PCity and PState would be added as null rows to each group of orders?

We were asked to fix a query to get rows from a prior year history table that did not match to rows in the current year to show a variance from one year to the next. Rows must match on [corpnbr],[plincd],[pgrpcd] and [pitmcd]. If the combination has rows in the current and prior year ([hstyr]) then everything is fine. However, if they have rows in the prior year (e.g. [hstyr]='2014') but not in the current year (e.g. [hstyr]='2015') then they do not show in the result. Below is how they designed the table and below that is the stored procedure to pull the records.
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[BillingHistory](

[plincd] [varchar](3) NULL,

I've two audit tables, AUDIT_ORDERS and AUDIT_ORDER_LINES.
The AUDIT_ORDERS has these columns: AUDIT_ID, ORDER_ID, AUDIT_DATE and other ones.
The AUDIT_ORDER_LINES has these columns: AUDIT_ID, ORDER_ID, ORDER_LINE_ID, AUDIT_DATE and other ones.
I need to join these two tables in order to select for each order line row the first order having the related audit date lower than or equal to the audit date of the related order line.
I don't want to use the TOP 1 clause or a subquery. I think to complete a such statement:
SELECT OL.Order_Line_ID, O.Order_ID, OL.Audit_Date, O.Audit_Date
FROM AUDIT_ORDER_LINES as OL INNER JOIN AUDIT_ORDERS as O
on OL.Order_ID = O.Order_ID and O.Audit_Date <= OL.Audit_Date ...
I'd like to get the first row of the Audit_Orders with audit_date <= of the audit_date of the Audit_Order_Lines table by using the join clause.

We have an application where we want to check to see if the vehicle part on a job matches to our internal parts inventory (PartsInventory table) before we order it. The problem is that sometimes the part number matches exactly and sometimes the part number has '-' or space but if those are removed, will match to our internal part number. Below is what I have so far but it only matches exact part numbers. One example would be if our part number was 1013738-00-C but the job (in RepairOrderLines) had a part number of 101373800C we should consider it a match. Both PartNumbers are varchar(30).

I've been matching some incoming contacts to existing contacts in a database and need to update, insert, or rematch based on the ifs below.
If name, phone, and email all provided for both, then use the highest Source. So if the Contact has a Source value of 5 and SourceContact has a ContactSource of 1, update Contact with SourceContact
If name, phone and email all provided, and source the same then update to new values.
If name and phone on SourceContact and name and Email on Contact then reset Contact_fk to -1 should not have matched, but should be an insert
If name and email on SourceContact and name and phone on Contact then reset Contact_fk to -1 should not have matched, but should be an insert
If name and phone on SourceContact and name and/or Phone is blank in Contact then update
If name and email on SourceContact and name and/or email is blank in Contact then update
If phone numbers can be different, just update record to SourceContact if it has a same or higher ContactSource
If email address do not match then set SourceContacts to -1 Contact_fk it was computed incorrectly. Both have a non blank email
If Contact_fk is 0 then it is a new contact and just insert it.

I have 4 rows below in file tblTEST, and I want to be able to transfer the CODE from the MAIN location to the INT location (replacing all existing "A" codes), preceeded by an "I".
ID LOC CODE

11 MAIN B
11 INT A
22 MAIN C
22 INT A
I want the result to be:
ID LOC CODE
-- ----- ------
11 MAIN B
11 INT IB
22 MAIN C
22 INT IC
I am stumped as to how to do this - any help or advice would be appreciated.
The only thing I've come up with is:
UPDATE S
SET s.code = B.code
FROM tbltest B
LEFT OUTER JOIN tbltest S ON B.id = S.id
WHERE (S.loc = 'INT')
But when I run it, it says "0 rows affected".

Consider the following: I have a table, say ORDERS, with these entries -
CustID
ProductID
1 CAN
2 2
3 1,2
4 4
5 1,2,3,4,5,CAN
6 10
7 CAN
8 1,CAN
I'd like to write a script to return only those rows WHERE ProductID = CAN along with other values in the same column. In this example, I'd like to return rows 5 & 8. How can I write this in T-SQL? So, say, check if ProductID has a comma ',' value plus the 'CAN' string. If yes, then return that row. If I use the LIKE operator, it'll return rows 1,5,7, and 8.

I have some stored procedure and there is a cursor inside it. I added some new columns to the table and those columns I included in the cursor declaration and fetch statement. In the cursor declaration I forgot to add comma (,) in between the new columns. So SQL Server it considers as a alias name for that column so syntactically it is correct. But logically in the cursor declaration having less number of columns than the columns in the fetch statement. So it should throw an error. But the procedure is getting compiled without raising any error. But if I execute the procedure that time it is throwing the error.
For example, below I have given the sample procedure. In this procedure, in the cursor declaration I removed the comma (,) between DOB and DOJ. If I compile this procedure it is getting compiled. But when execute that time only it is throwing the error. So I am interested in if any option is available to know the error in the compilation time itself.
ALTER PROCEDURE Test

BEGIN TRY

@fname VARCHAR(50),
@dob DATE,
@doj DATE

Of course the above query is missing a few things but with ETL the where clause UPPER(RTRIM does not appear to be something that has an object or property that I can use in the Lookup.
Please correct and educate me.

Chaps,
apologies for the drip-drip approach......
Is it possible to do pattern matching against a string using FINDSTRING or similar in a derived column expression without recourse to including 3rd party regexp style plugins?
I want to seach for a reference in a string which will have the format ANNNNNAAA ie. an alpha with a certain value followed by 5 digits followed by three alphas with specific values.
eg Z00001YYY or X00022HHH
thanks for your assistance,
regards,
Chris

Why does this right join return the same results as using a left (or even a full join)? There are 470 records in Account, and there are 1611 records in Contact. But any join returns 793 records.
select Contact.firstname, Contact.lastname, Account.[Account Name]
from Contact
right join Account
on Contact.[Account Name] = Account.[Account Name]
where Contact.[Account Name] = Account.[Account Name]

I have data:
Ticket User Priority
A ME 1
B ME 1
C ME 2
C ME 3
D ME 2
E YOU 2
F YOU 1
G ME 3
H YOU 2
H YOU 3
I ME 1
Essentially if Ticket and User are the same I just want the min priority returned.
SO:
Ticket User Priority
A ME 1
B ME 1
C ME 2
D ME 2
E YOU 2
F YOU 1
G ME 3
H YOU 2
I ME 1
I've tried partition and rank but can't get it to return the right output.

I was writing a query using both left outer join and inner join. And the query was ....
SELECT
S.companyname AS supplier, S.country,P.productid, P.productname, P.unitprice,C.categoryname
FROM
Production.Suppliers AS S LEFT OUTER JOIN
(Production.Products AS P
INNER JOIN Production.Categories AS C
[code]....
However ,the result that i got was correct. But when i did the same query using the left outer join in both the cases
i.e..
SELECT
S.companyname AS supplier, S.country,P.productid, P.productname, P.unitprice,C.categoryname
FROM
Production.Suppliers AS S LEFT OUTER JOIN
(Production.Products AS P
LEFT OUTER JOIN Production.Categories AS C
ON C.categoryid = P.categoryid)
ON
S.supplierid = P.supplierid
WHERE
S.country = N'Japan';
The result i got was same,i.e
supplier country productid productname unitprice categorynameSupplier QOVFD Japan 9 Product AOZBW 97.00 Meat/PoultrySupplier QOVFD Japan 10 Product YHXGE 31.00 SeafoodSupplier QOVFD Japan 74 Product BKAZJ 10.00 ProduceSupplier QWUSF Japan 13 Product POXFU 6.00 SeafoodSupplier QWUSF Japan 14 Product PWCJB 23.25 ProduceSupplier QWUSF Japan 15 Product KSZOI 15.50 CondimentsSupplier XYZ Japan NULL NULL NULL NULLSupplier XYZ Japan NULL NULL NULL NULL
and this time also i got the same result. My question is that is there any specific reason to use inner join when join the third table and not the left outer join.

I have tables and a function as representated by the code below. The names for objects here are just for representation and not the actual names of objects. Table RDTEST may have one or multiple values for RD for each PID. So the function GIVERD will return one or multiple values of RD for each value of PID passed to it.
When I run the following query, I get the required result except the rows for CID 500 for which PID is NULL in table T1. I want the rows for CID 500 as well with PID values as NULL.
SELECT A.CID,
A.ANI,
A.PID,
B.RD
FROM T1 AS A CROSS APPLY GIVERD(A.PID) B
CREATE TABLE [DBO].[RDTEST](
[PID] [INT] NULL,
[RD] [INT] NULL
)
[Code] ....
