Transact SQL :: Joining 2 Similar Tables

Sep 28, 2015

What I am working with unfortunately is a very poorly designed and non-normalized database. Please don't criticize the design. I didn't design it, but I have to write queries against it.I have 2 tables. 1 is called EnterVolume. The other is ExitVolume. Similar columns exist in each.

CREATE TABLE [EventPortion].[EventEnterVolume](
[SequenceNumber] [int] NULL,
[TrialID] [nvarchar](255) NULL,
[TimeOfEvent] [int] NULL,
[UniversalTime] [nvarchar](255) NULL,
[SBOINumber] [int] NULL,
[SEntityPosUpdateIndex] [int] NULL,
[VolumeIndex] [int] NULL,

[code]....

The rules of the database state that for every EnterVolume row (for a given TrialID, SBOINumber, and OwnerBOI) there must be a corresponding ExitVolume row in the ExitVolume table. What I need to do is to capture the paired TimeOfEvent entries from each table for each paired row. Nothing says that an SBOI cannot enter and exit a OwnerBOI's volume several times during the same Trial.Every time a SBOI Enters an OwnerBOI's volume during a certain trial, a row is created in the EnterVolume table. And Likewise when Exiting a OwnerBOI's volume during a certain trial, a row is created in the ExitVolume table.

So here is a query that I attempted, but gave undesirable results:

SELECT EV.TimeOfEvent AS [Enter Time], XV.TimeOfEvent AS ExitTime
FROM IntegratedTest1.EventPortion.EventEnterVolume AS EV INNER JOIN
IntegratedTest1.EventPortion.EventExitVolume AS XV ON EV.TrialID = XV.TrialID AND EV.SBOINumber = XV.SBOINumber AND EV.OwnerBOI = XV.OwnerBOI

Here is some sample data:

EnterVolume
TrialID             SBOI           OwnerBOI         TimeOfEvent
1                     A                 D                      5
1                     A                 D                      2000

I have created a join statement with 3 tables in my database. The join wokers fine but the result is not on the format (Layout) I need it. Here is where I need help. Let me explain what I need to accomplish.
I have 3 tables in my database
1- Rates (Master Table)
Every Prepaid long distance card have a list of countries with individual rates
2- Countries_Template (Child table used to get the country name)
This table is to get copy of a list of countries every time a new card's rate is created
3- Card_Denominations (Child table where I create all the price denominations of each card)
Each cards have multiple cards denominations ($2, $5, $10, $20 and so on) so every time a card is inserted in the Cards table I insert the card denominations on the Card_Denominations table.
The format I need to return from my Query using above 3 tables have to look like this:
Flag   Country   Rate       $2      $5      $10      $20

Joining 3 Tables In Statement

Jan 15, 2015

I have 3 tables that I'm trying to joing together in an SQL statement. I've tried several different JOIN statements, but can't seem to get it to work correctly.

Scenario:

I want all records from TABLE_1
I want to LEFT JOIN TABLE_1 to TABLE_2, but I only want records from TABLE_2 that are an 'Active' STATUS. My problem is, the STATUS field is in TABLE_3.

I have to link TABLE_1 to TABLE_2 by ITEMNUM.
I have to link TABLE_2 to TABLE_3 by ORDERNUM since TABLE_3 does not have ITEMNUM, and pull across the STATUS.

TABLE_1 is an ITEMID table. TABLE_2 is our ORDER_LINE table, and TABLE_3 is our ORDER_HEADER info. I want all items listed; then I'd like to see all items that are on an order (TABLE_2), but only if the ORDER_HEADER (TABLE_3) is an 'ACTIVE' STATUS.

Joining Tables In A VIEW SELECT Statement

Jan 11, 1999

Wuddup,

I am trying to create a view that encapsulates some specific info from many different tables. I have about 30 tables all with exactly the same field names and field types. I want to take 3 of the fields from every table and put them together into one 'VIEW' so I can run more efficient queries. SQL however, doesn't let you 'combine' 2 columns from different tables into one column in the view. (making sense?)
I tried running a 'UNION' but you are specifically NOT allowed to run a union in a create view statement. Anyone have any ideas?

Transact-SQL Help - CASE Statement And Group By

Jul 20, 2005

I've always been mistified why you can't use a column alias in the group byclause (i.e. you have to re-iterate the entire expression in the group byclause after having already done it once in the select statement). I'mmostly a SQL hobbiest, so it's possible that I am not doing this in the mostefficient manner. Anyone care to comment on this with relation to thefollowing example (is there a way to acheive this without re-stating theentire CASE statement again in the Group By clause?):Select 'Age' =CaseWHEN(SubmittedOn >= DATEADD(dd, - 30, GETDATE())) AND (SubmittedOn <=DATEADD(dd, - 0, GETDATE()))THEN '0-30 Days Old'WHEN(SubmittedOn >= DATEADD(dd, - 60, GETDATE())) AND (SubmittedOn <=DATEADD(dd, - 31, GETDATE())) Then '31-60 Days Old'WHEN(SubmittedOn >= DATEADD(dd, - 90, GETDATE())) AND (SubmittedOn <=DATEADD(dd, - 61, GETDATE())) Then '61-90 Days Old'WHEN(SubmittedOn <= DATEADD(dd, - 91, GETDATE())) THEN '91+ Days Old'ELSE cast(SubmittedOn as varchar(22))end,max(SubmittedOn), COUNT(SCRID) AS NbrSCRsFrom SCRViewWHERE(StatusSort < 90) ANDCustomerID = 8 andUserID = 133group byCaseWHEN(SubmittedOn >= DATEADD(dd, - 30, GETDATE())) AND (SubmittedOn <=DATEADD(dd, - 0, GETDATE()))THEN '0-30 Days Old'WHEN(SubmittedOn >= DATEADD(dd, - 60, GETDATE())) AND (SubmittedOn <=DATEADD(dd, - 31, GETDATE())) Then '31-60 Days Old'WHEN(SubmittedOn >= DATEADD(dd, - 90, GETDATE())) AND (SubmittedOn <=DATEADD(dd, - 61, GETDATE())) Then '61-90 Days Old'WHEN(SubmittedOn <= DATEADD(dd, - 91, GETDATE())) THEN '91+ Days Old'ELSE cast(SubmittedOn as varchar(22))endOrder by max(submittedon) descThanks,Chad

So lets say I want to group the data by OS->browser->browser_version(just one example) then I cannot achieve that as the order of OS column comes later in the query.

I know one option would be to write a dynamic SQL but i dont want to do that because of performance reasons. Any other way this can be achieved?

Transact SQL :: Case Statement With Different Columns

Oct 20, 2015

Is it possible to combine a CASE statement with two different columns to retrieve data into one result column? In one column it has multiple JobCode, but this needs to be divided.  The only way I can see to do this is take the data from another column to get the results.Ex. JobCode - has one code for several job descriptions (there are about 30), but all within this code cannot have the same level of access.  So I need to divide them out, and put them in one column for AccessLevel.

JobTitle - has one code for one job, (but there are over 100).I want to pull from both columns to get the results I need to assign appropriate access level in one column.

Case JobCode     (they all have same job code, but everyone in this job code should not have same access)
When '45' Then '1' (Principal, Asst. Prin, or any Administrator, Counselors)
When '25' Then '2' (this could be teacher, etc. )
Case JobTitle   (this is how access should be)
When '12345' Then '1' (this is Administration only)

Transact SQL :: Case Statement In Update Clause

Jun 4, 2015

I have used the below update query. However, its updating only the first value. Like its updating AB with volume when c.Type  = ABC, similarly for CD. Its not updating based on the 2nd or the next case condition.

Update XYZ Set AB = a.Amt * (CASE WHEN c.Type = 'ABC'  THEN  (c.volume)
 WHEN c.TYPE = 'DEF'  THEN  (c.volume)
 WHEN c.Type = 'GHI'  THEN  (c.volume)
 Else 0
 END),
 CD = CASE WHEN c.Type = 'MARGIN' THEN '4105.31'
 WHEN c.Type = 'ABC' THEN '123.1'
 WHEN c.Type = 'DEF' THEN '234.2'
WHEN c.Type = 'GHI' THEN '567.1'
END
 from table1 a join table2 b
 on a.Cust = b.Customer
 join table3 c
 on b.account = c.account and b.channel =c.channel

Why its not working properly? But if i use Select statement instead of update query its working properly.

Transact SQL :: Case Statement In Where Clause - Select First / Default Value If Two Different Value Exists

Nov 16, 2015

I have scenario where i have to pick one particular value from where condition. Here is the example:A store can have different types i-e A or B , A and B or either A or B.

Store     Type    Sales
11           A        1000
23       A      1980
23       B       50
5         B      560

I want to filter the store in "where clause"  where

1)- if the store has type A and  B, then assign only A
2)- if the store has  type A associated with it then assign A
3)- if the store has type B associated with it, then assign B.

Select Store, sum(sales), Type
from table1
where (TYPE]=  (case when [TYPE] in ('A','B') then 'A'
when [TYPE]='A' then 'A' else 'B'end))

Transact SQL :: Case Statement For A New Column Based On Date And Username Columns

FinancialTransactionSummaryTest.UserName--,FinancialTransactionSummaryTest.TransactionDate

[Code] .....

So,if we look at the result set, we notice 2 conditions where the IG_FinancialTransactionSummary.Username is like 'Data' and if we see the transaction date then sometimes that is the max transaction date or sometimes there are transactions that happened after but that doesn't have like '%data%' in username . So, i need to add a new column to my sql query which should basically verify if the username is like '%data%' and if that is the max(transaction date) or even if there are any transactions after that doesn't have like '%data%' then YES else No.

Group by [City]

Here is the result:

St. Louis 1000
Kansas City 800
Columbia 700
Jefferson City 650
Joplin 300

When I add this Case When statement to roll up the city information it changes the name of the city to 'Other Missouri City' however it does not aggregate all Cities with the value 'Other Missouri City':

Select [City]= CASE WHEN [City] = 'St. Louis' THEN 'St. Louis' ELSE 'Other Missouri City' END, SUM([Cars]) AS 'Total Cars'
From [Output-MarketAnalysis]
Where [City] IN ('St. Louis','Kansas City','Columbia', 'Jefferson City','Joplin') AND [Status] = 'Active'
Group by [City]

Here is the result:

St. Louis 1000
Other Missouri City 800
Other Missouri City 700
Other Missouri City 650
Other Missouri City 300

What I would like to see is a result like:

St. Louis 1000
Other Missouri City 2450

Case Insensitivity Is On Server Wide: Tables Render Case Sensative...

Jan 6, 2005

Hello:

I have created an SQL server table in the past on a server that was all case sensative. Over time I found out that switching to a server that is not case sensative still caused my data to become case sensative. I read an article that said you should rebuild your master database then re-create your tables. So after rebuilding the master database, a basic restore would not be sufficient? I would have to go and manually re-create every single table again?

Any suggestions?

Problem Using Result From CASE In Another CASE Statement

Nov 5, 2007

I have a view where I'm using a series of conditions within a CASE statement to determine a numeric shipment status for a given row. In addition, I need to bring back the corresponding status text for that shipment status code.

Previously, I had been duplicating the CASE logic for both columns, like so:

Code Block...beginning of SQL view...
shipment_status =
CASE
[logic for condition 1]
THEN 1
WHEN [logic for condition 2]
THEN 2
WHEN [logic for condition 3]
THEN 3
WHEN [logic for condition 4]
THEN 4
ELSE 0
END,
shipment_status_text =
CASE
[logic for condition 1]
THEN 'Condition 1 text'
WHEN [logic for condition 2]
THEN 'Condition 2 text'
WHEN [logic for condition 3]
THEN 'Condition 3 text'
WHEN [logic for condition 4]
THEN 'Condition 4 text'
ELSE 'Error'
END,
...remainder of SQL view...

This works, but the logic for each of the case conditions is rather long. I'd like to move away from this for easier code management, plus I imagine that this isn't the best performance-wise.

This is what I'd like to do:

Code Block
...beginning of SQL view...
shipment_status =
CASE
[logic for condition 1]
THEN 1
WHEN [logic for condition 2]
THEN 2
WHEN [logic for condition 3]
THEN 3
WHEN [logic for condition 4]
THEN 4
ELSE 0
END,

shipment_status_text =

CASE shipment_status

WHEN 1 THEN 'Condition 1 text'

WHEN 2 THEN 'Condition 2 text'

WHEN 3 THEN 'Condition 3 text'

WHEN 4 THEN 'Condition 4 text'

ELSE 'Error'

END,
...remainder of SQL view...

This runs as a query, however all of the rows now should "Error" as the value for shipment_status_text.

Is what I'm trying to do even currently possible in T-SQL? If not, do you have any other suggestions for how I can accomplish the same result?

Thanks,

Jason

Transact SQL :: Joining To A Hierarchical Table

Oct 19, 2015

I have a lookup table with 4 levels of codes like follows:

create table #RiskElementCategory(
[RiskElementCategoryCode] [nchar](5),
[RiskElementCategoryCodeDsc [nvarchar](50),
[RiskElementCategoryCode_2] [nchar](5),
[RiskElementCategoryLevel2Dsc] [nvarchar](50),

[Code] ...

Along with some other rows with the same format. I need to join to this table using a RiskElementCode that I get from the Source system.  The trick is that it can be at any level, but I don't know which level it is at.  So what I have to do is somehow get the correct row from the lookup table based on the code from the source to get the correct level.

So for Example, If i receive the RiskElementCode of 'SSR', that is in column RiskElementCategoryCode_3 so I need the row that has 'NA' for anything after RiskElementCategoryCode_3 where RiskElementCategoryCode_3 = 'SSR'.  If i get 'DFR' I need to get the row where RiskElementCategoryCode_4 = 'DFR' since there are no levels deeper than 4 i don't need to check anything else.  If I get 'PRR', then I need the row where RiskElementCategoryCode = 'PRR' and code_2, code_3 and code_4 = 'NA'.

So besides getting the correct row based on the code, i need to get the correct row based on the level where the next levels are 'NA'.  I should only get 1 row each time.

I know people use ROW_NUMBER() function to do the pagination but my below two query is bit complex. Sohow to use pagination there ? I used ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY IsNull(A.OEReference, B.OEReference) ASC) as Line in one but not sure am i right or wrong.

IF IsNull(@GroupID,'') = ''
SELECT IsNull(PartGroupName, 'UnMapped') AS PartGroupName,
CASE IsNull(PartGroupName, '')
WHEN '' THEN ''
ELSE IsNull(IsNull(K.GroupID, IsNull(C.PartGroupID,'')),'')
END AS PartGroupID,

[Code] .....

Joining Tables - But Data Not Always In All Tables

Aug 18, 2007

I have created 3 views, which I then want to join to produce an overall result. The first view returns customer details, along with payment information. The next two views return values only when the customer has purchased extras outside our standard product i.e. if there is no purchase of an extra, then nothing is written to the extra's table. When I join the views together they only return values where data has been matched in all 3 views i.e. extra's have been purchased. Any data that did not match in all 3 view (i.e. no extra's purchased) is either ignored or dropped from the results. So I need my script to return all values even if no data exists in the two extra views.

My scripts are as follows:
Main View
SELECT
CUSTOMER_POLICY_DETAILS.POLICY_DETAILS_ID,
CUSTOMER_POLICY_DETAILS.HISTORY_ID,
CUSTOMER_POLICY_DETAILS.AUTHORISATIONUSER,
CUSTOMER_POLICY_DETAILS.AUTHORISATIONDATE,
ACCOUNTS_TRANSACTION.TRANSACTION_CODE_ID,
CUSTOMER_INSURED_PARTY.SURNAME,
SYSTEM_INSURER.INSURER_DEBUG,
SYSTEM_SCHEME_NAME.SCHEMENAME,
CUSTOMER_POLICY_DETAILS.POLICYNUMBER,

IsNull(SUM(CASE LIST_TRAN_BREAKDOWN_TYPE.IncludeInTotal
WHEN 1 THEN ACCOUNTS_TRAN_BREAKDOWN.AMOUNT
ELSE 0
END), 0) AS TotalPayable,
--NetPremium
IsNull(SUM(CASE ACCOUNTS_TRAN_BREAKDOWN.Tran_Breakdown_Type_ID
WHEN 'NET' THEN ACCOUNTS_TRAN_BREAKDOWN.AMOUNT
ELSE 0
END), 0) AS NetPremium,
--IPT
IsNull(SUM(CASE
WHEN SubString(ACCOUNTS_TRAN_BREAKDOWN.Premium_Section_ID, 1, 3) = 'TAX' THEN ACCOUNTS_TRAN_BREAKDOWN.AMOUNT
ELSE 0
END), 0) AS IPT,
--Fee
IsNull(SUM(CASE ACCOUNTS_TRAN_BREAKDOWN.Tran_Breakdown_Type_ID
WHEN 'FEE' THEN ACCOUNTS_TRAN_BREAKDOWN.AMOUNT
ELSE 0
END), 0) AS Fee,
--TotalCommission
IsNull(SUM(CASE

I have included all the scripts I have used, as others may find them useful, in addition to anyone that is able to provide me with some assistance. Thanks in advance for for the help.
