Transact SQL :: Index Maintenance / Defrag Fails On CDC Enabled Database - 2008 R2
Oct 18, 2012
We have a new database with cdc enabled on all of its tables. This causes the index maintenance task to fail with following message:
"Executing the query "EXEC DBName.dbo.IndexDefrag_sp" failed with the following error:  "The unique index 'PK_TableName' on source table '[dbo].[TableName]' is used by Change Data Capture.  To alter or drop the index, you must first disable Change Data Capture on the table.  The transaction ended in the trigger. The batch has been aborted.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly" We would like to run the index maintenance without losing the cdc data. We plan on installing SP2 on SQL Server 2008 R2 soon, would that solve the issue? Disabling the cdc prior to index maintenance and then re-enabling back upon completion; would delete the data as I found in most discussions, but we would like to retain it.Â

I have several Maintenance jobs that keep failing. They
are , Integrity Checks, Index rebuild, and Update

have pasted it below. None of my other SQL 2000 servers

I have a maintenance plan step to perform transaction log backups. There are a few databases that are offline. The backup seems to fail because it tries to backup the offline databases. The backup step is by itself as one of three subplans, although it also fails when it is the only step in a plan with only one subplan.
I have another server that is only on SP1 and it does not have problems handling the offline databases.
Is this an issue with SP2(9.0.3054)?

I've noticed a huge transaction log size after having run an

Hi,
After issuing an index rebuild on a primary key index (and updating statistics), the index still shows a scan density of 12.5%!
Any ideas on why the rebuild doesn't seem to do anything on the fragmentation levels?
I'm using sql 2005
Thanx

I know the shortcut to 'defragging' the database to eliminate and
reclaim 'whitespace' in data and index pages is to setup a maintenance
plan. This doesn't work for me for two reasons:
1. I like to know how things work.
2. I can not create maintenance plans with my hosted provider.
I use the following T-SQL to rebuild all indexes on all tables:
-- exec sp_MSforeachtable "DBCC DBREINDEX ('?', ' ', 90)
But, does that not only address indexes? What about getting whitepace
back from data in tables themselves?
Am I over-thinking this?
When you're paying for SQL by the MB and generate a lot of data (with a
fair amount of churn) you want to keep it optimized and efficient,
right?

Does anyone know if dbreindex and index defrag ideally perform the same function? I have been told that index defrag does not hold locks on a table when executed and dbreindex does. Other than this is there any difference between the two functions? My understanding was that dbreindex reindexes the data stored in a table for faster reads and index defrag removes purged data. Am I correct? I am currently running both functions on my SQL server and was advised that I really only need to run the index defrag job. Is this advise correct?

I have a clustered index which shows as having a fragmentation level of 66% according to sys.dm_db_index_ physical_ stats.avg_ fragmentation_ in_ percent.
But no matter what I try the fragmentation level doesn't budge. And yes I'm updating the statistics after each attempt. Its not a huge issue the table only has 348 records. I'm testing a fixing fragmentation maintenance script. In Ironing out the syntax of my script I've fixed the fragmentation of indexes of over 65 % anyway..I've come across and index that I can't defragment. I've tried
ALTER INDEX ALL ON [GRIDINFO] REBUILD WITH (FILLFACTOR = 90)
I've tried
ALTER INDEX ALL ON [GRIDINFO] REORGANIZE
I've tried
DBCC INDEXDEFRAG (MYDATABASE, 'GRIDINFO', PK__GRIDINFO__3214EC2721F5FC7F);
The command complete successfully yet the avg_fragmentation_in_percent doesn't change. The table also has a nonclustered index. I've gleaned through all the statements of 'this will have no effect if' but so far I've not spotted a reason why this index won't defrag. The script has been modified to remove schema and database names for the forum.
dbcc showcontig('GRIDINFO','IDX_GRIDINFO1') with tableresults , all_levels
go
DBCC SHOWCONTIG ('GRIDINFO')
go
sp_helpindex 'GRIDINFO'
[code]....

line 1? Is that line one of the T-SQL statement? Because if that's the case then it's not because I copied and pasted the line in to a query and it executed without error.
Under SQL Agent there are no entries!
So what bloody log am I suppose to be checking?! This is very frustrating.
I then copied and pasted every sql statement in to a query and THEY all ran just fine.
What's going wrong here, and how can I correct it?

I am currently re-writing an overnight index defrag procedure and would like to audit indexes in my database - logging the before defrag action" avg fragmentation value and "after defrag action" frag value in an audit table. Â This will be for all databases on the server. Â I have completed the vast majority of it (cycling though all the databases, detecting which indexes need reorganising or rebuilding and inserting the information into a table) but I cannot get the audit values working properly. Â For example, a sample row in my audit table would look like this:
ID Name DB Table frag_before frag_after
1 Index2 DB1 Table6 70.33456 0.03
2 Index7 DB1 Table9 45.98 1.2567etc

I have a database backup (.bak) that was taken from UAT environment that has CDC enabled on some tables. I want to restore that database into my SANDBOX environment which does not support CDC (because of standard edition). The restore process fails due to this incompatibility. Is there any way to restore without CDC (I dont CDC enabled on my SANDBOX; just my data from the backup) ?

One of my programmers changed their database from full to Simple recovery. Saw that my job that backs up the Full Recovery mode databases failed, so I moved that database to my Simple database backup job plan and removed it from the Full Recovery job. I am unable to remove the db from the Transaction Log task on the Full Plan because when I try to edit that job "Databases with Simple Recovery will be excluded"
My transaction log backups are still failing with the following error: "The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE. BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.Just want to remove that database so my Full Recovery backup job does not try to back it up.

I have inherited a server on which is a maintenance plan with two subplans on different schedules. In each subplan there are Execute T-SQL tasks with scripts for index rebuilds. Each task is set up with a Completion arrow to the next task and a Failure arrow to a Notify Operator Task. I was asked to add a task for index rebuilds to a specific subplan for a specific database, which is what the other tasks also do. I discovered that my task was failing but the others were fine. No notification was sent about my task failing even though the job is marked in MSDB as a failed job. I have sent a test email using the "Send Test Email..." option when right clicking Database Mail in SSMSand I receive an email so I know Database Mail works.
I set up a test job to model the index job that I can't get notifications from. I have two T-SQL tasks that just select the top row from a small table. The first task has a syntax error that I did so it would fail. I have a failure arrow to a Notify Operator Task and a Completion arrow to another T-SQL task with no syntax error which has a Success arrow to a Notify Operator task. As expected, when I execute this job I receive one failure email and one success email.
The only other troubleshooting step I know to try is to add a Notify Operator task before my failing task. That Notify Operator task will hopefully fire to tell me that the previous step was successful. I am not having problems with the other steps so I was just thinking I would try to get the subplan to send me a success email about one of the steps that has been working fine.

I am trying to migrate a 2008 R2 (SP1) database with one secondary data file to a separate 2014 server using the Copy Database Wizard from the 2014 server, and connect to both SQL engines on that server. It consistently fails on step 5. I'm logging to a text file and the error I see is as follows:
InnerException-->Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.
StackTrace: at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection, Action`1 wrapCloseInAction)
I created a test database on the same 2008 server, also with a secondary data file, and it migrated flawlessly using the CDW. I am using the copy object method in all cases, and not the detach/attach method.
I would prefer to perform this without any downtime on the source (production) database.

Sql server 2008R2 (SP2) Ent, PROD DB myDB was encrypted. During Release mistakenly (Vendor created script blames some settings in ...- actually does not matter) Decryption started (ALTER .. SET ENCRYPTION OFF) as we got from ErrorLog.
For some reason initial encryption scan was aborted and then mentioned command: ALTER ... OFF was issued again. What we have now (after 60 h of decryption- encryption took only 2.5 h)- is_encrypted = 0 in sys.databases, encryption_state = 5 (decryption in progress) in sys.dm_database_encryption_keys (percent_complete= 0). But it seems myDB is still encrypted- I made a backup of myDB and tried to read it (restore filelistonly) from other server (with no encryption)- failed- asked for key. Seems metadata was changed when initial scan during decryption started but then stuck and (if I am correct) decryption was never completed. Question- any similar experience? How we can fix meta- data, i.e. assuming that myDB is still encrypted we should have is_encrypted = 1 and encryption_state = 3 (encrypted).

In my previous environment while doing so, i got space related error in primary filegroup for insufficient space in the primary filegroup. Is there any rule of thumb about how much space is required by index rebuild command for each database, or is there a safe threshold for free space in the database?

Hello,
I am working with a very large db (850+gig) that is in desperate need of defragging. I am familiar with DBCC Reindex and DBCC IndexDefrag but am concerned that these processes will take an extremely long time to run. Has anyone had any experience with any 3rd party tools that better/faster then DBCC? Or any ideas or suggestions how best to attack this? Among the many tables with large footprints and millions of rows, I have 3 tables with reserved space over 100g also 3 tables with over 500Mil rows (1 tbl with > 1bil rows). This is a 24x7 db.
Thanks in advance for any ideas and suggestions

Hi there,Used the wizard to create a maintenance plan for a db. But it fails most ofthe time. I checked the log-files.At 1.00 AM, it runs the "Optimizations" job for 6-9 seconds. It succeedsalways. At 1.05 AM, for 1 second, it runs "integrity check", but most of the time itfails, and says that it couldn't switch to single-user because other usersare using the database. And when "integrity check" fails the "backup" job won't run at 1.10 AM. Whenit DOES run it takes 2 seconds. How do I find out who is using the database ? How do I put a sp_who (orsimilar) in the "integrity check" job ?I got this tip:----------Assuming you have SQL2000, then you can use something like this tokick out all the users:ALTER DATABASE foo SET RESTRICTED_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATEIf you want to know who is using the database, then this is one way:select suser_sname(sid)from master..sysprocesseswhere dbid = db_id('foo')---------But how do I actually do it ? How do I edit a maintenance plan ?thx/jim

What user is it referring to? What user does a Maintenance plan use to login as? SA on the server has full access to all databases. SA’s default database is master and I can read and write to it with the enterprise manager and query analyzer.

Hi,
I'm running SQL 2005 SP2 and having a problem with a Database Maintenance task created in SSMS doing transaction log backups of all user databases.
When I look at dbo.sysmaintplan_logdetail I see the message:
Database 'Database1' will not be backed up because it does not have its recovery model set to Full or BulkLogged.
Great - that's what we want! Skip the SIMPLE recovery mode databases. However, the next entry is the following error message:
Executing the query "BACKUP LOG [Database1] TO DISK = N'D:\MSSQL$Windows\MSSQL.2\MSSQL\Backup\Database1\Database1_backup_200707231600.trn' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'Database1_backup_20070723160023', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 " failed with the following error: "The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE. BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
Which says to me it is trying to backup the same database(s) it just said it was skipping!
What's going on? I see that there is a fix to a similar error message with the cumulative update KB936305 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936305) for maintenance cleanup tasks.
Does anybody else have such a problem?

Rebuild index maintenance plan is failed, since we don't have space in the C:Drive we have left the option as it is to sort the results in user databases respectively. These user databases are in E: with sufficient space to rebuild index.
Check the below details.
SQL Server 2005: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.5000.00 (X64)  Dec 10 2010 10:38:40  Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation  Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)Â
Online reindexing supports in SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition? Job is failing because these options (sort results in tempdb & keep index online while reindexing) is not checked (enabled)?

Our backups by default go to a network location, but I'd like to modify our maintenance plans to backup to an alternative location if the primary location isn't available. I've setup two Backup Database Tasks where the second one runs only if the first one Fails, and if the second one runs (on first one's failure) it then sends a notification to me so I know this occurred.
The Plan is running as expected, when I simulate a bad path in the first Backup Task the second one runs and the notification is sent, but the Job shows failure. I'd like to show the job as Successful when this occurs since I'm handling the issue and notification within the Plan, but I'm unable to find out how. I've set FailParentOnFailure to False on the Plan and I've changed the MaximumErrorCount to 2 with the assumption that this would work, but neither didn't.
Also I'm running into this in both SQL 2008 and SQL 2012.
