Transact SQL :: Instead Of Insert / Verify Not Inserting Into Identity Column

Apr 24, 2015

I am writing an Instead of Insert trigger. I would like to fire an error when inserting into an 'Identity' column. Since UPDATE([ColumnName]) always returns TRUE for insert statements, is there an easy/fast way around this? I don't want to use:

IF(EXISTS(SELECT [i].[AS_ID] FROM [inserted] [i] WHERE [i].[AS_ID] IS NULL))
here is my pseudo-code...
CREATE VIEW [org].[Assets]
WITH SCHEMABINDING

[Code] .....

-- How does this statement need to be written to throw the error?
--UPDATE([AS_ID]) always returns TRUE

IF(UPDATE([AS_ID]))
RAISERROR('INSERT into the anchor identity column ''AS_ID'' is not allowed.', 16, 1) WITH NOWAIT;

-- Is there a faster/better method than this?
IF(EXISTS(SELECT [i].[AS_ID] FROM [inserted] [i] WHERE [i].[AS_ID] IS NOT NULL))
RAISERROR('INSERT into the anchor identity column ''AS_ID'' is not allowed.', 16, 1) WITH NOWAIT;

-- Do Stuff
END;

-- Should error for inserting into [AS_ID] field (which is an identity field)
INSERT INTO [org].[Assets]([AS_ID], [Tag], [Name])
VALUES(1, 'f451', 'Paper burns'),
(2, 'k505.928', 'Paper burns in Chemistry');

-- No error should occur
INSERT INTO [org].[Assets]([Tag], [Name])
VALUES('f451', 'Paper burns'),
('k505.928', 'Paper burns in Chemistry');

How To Fetch Data Before Inserting A New ROW If We Are Using Identity Column??????

Apr 21, 2008

Hi,

I am using SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition & Merge Replication

in this I want to insert a record into table,
in that table I have taken UserID coloumn as auto incrementing Identity type.

In a book I read that,
If you are using an Identity column, you must find the next available number and reseed before an insert can be successful. You will also have to set up ranged identity columns on the published database to prevent errors when the new data is merged.

Now I want to ask here that, how should I ressed that value before inserting?????

any help in a form of CODe will be appriciated.....

thanks in advance...

Question On Inserting A Record On Sql Server With Identity Column As Key

Jan 16, 2006

Hi, All:Please help. I use sql server as back end and Access 2003 as front end(everything is DAO).A table on SQL server has an identity column as the key.We have trouble on adding records to this table using the following SQL.strSQL = "INSERT INTO myTableOnSQLServer (A, B, C, D, E) SELECT A, B, C, D,E FROM myTableonAccessLocal"db.execute strSQLThe schema of the table "myTableOnSQLServer" and the schema of the table"myTableonAccessLocal" are all the same except that the "myTableOnSQLServer"has an identity column (ID). The key of the "myTableOnSQLServer" is "ID" andthe table "myTableonAccessLocal" does not have a key.When we try to run the query, it gives errors indicating the key is violatedor missing.Should I figure out the autonumber for it first and then add to the SQLserver table?Many thanks,HS

Transact SQL :: Insert Records And Write Back Identity Value

Jun 19, 2015

I'm trying to insert records into "holding" table and write back identity column value (Entry_Key) to the original table. So my setup is I have two tables; tblEWPBulk and tbleFormsUploadEWP. Users will enter records into tblEWPBulk and use BatchID to group records, once batch entry has been completed (usually less than 30 records) user will click on UploadAll button and insert records (not all fields) into tbleFormsUploadEWP. One record in tblEWPBulk can be sent multiple times to the holding table but tblEWPBulk will need to have latest Entry_Key captured. Records are sent from holding table to DB2 z/VSE using SQL stored procedure and based on certain logic records are marked uploaded or certain error capture... that part works fine.

So for example I want to send

BatchID, AccountNumber, Period, ReceiveDate, AccountType, ReturnType, NetProfitOrLoss, TaxCredit FROM tblEWPBulk to the holding table and write back Entry_Key (identity column) back to the record in tblEWPBulk (field called UploadEntryKey). As I said one record could be sent to the holding table multiple times until uploaded or deleted and UploadEntryKey always needs to be updated so that when results are processed response from the DB2 can be inserted into table and presented to the user.

No foreign key relationship exists since records in the holding table get sent to the archive table and table is truncated and entry_key starting value reset back to 2000... just some DB2 restrictions.

Transact SQL :: Get Identity Column Value When Update Statement Fails?

My current proc updates(updates using joins of two or three tables) millions of records as per the condition provided for each department.

However, when the proc fails it writes to a ErrorTable, ERROR_MESSAGE(), ERROR_SEVERITY() and which department has failed.

Since the records are updated keeping the selected departments in loop, I get the department in a temp variable.Now, I was asked to log the specific record where the failure was occured.Something like log the identity column value or primary key value which record has failed.

INSERT Into Table With IDENTITY Column

Jul 31, 2001

I'm sure this is a common problem but I can't find any relevant info on this site

I have a table that I would like to insert values into. I want to take the values from a secondary table using a select statement.

e.g. a simplified version...

TABLE1
(
Id INTEGER IDENTITY,
UserName VARCHAR(50),
Description VARCHAR(50)
)

TABLE 2
(
UserName VARCHAR(50),
Description VARCHAR(50)
)

Runing the insert statement

INSERT Table1 (UserName, Description)
SELECT *
FROM TABLE2

results in the error
erver: Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Line 2
Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'Id', table 'CDS_Live.dbo.Table1'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.
The statement has been terminated.

I was under the impression that an identity column would be automatically inserted by SQL server. Now I know I could write a piece of anonymous Transact SQL which declares a cursor by selecting all rows from table 2 and inserting rows into table 1 on a row by row basis, but is there any way I could do the Insert with a single INSERT statement?

thanks

neill

How To Set Start Identity Column During An Insert

May 2, 2008

Hi.

I am doing a left join insert from two tables, and i know my ID is the Indentity column. I am doing something wrong and it has to do with the identity issue. I have set the identity to on, b/c i currently have data in the table (tblProduct) and I am inserting all the records not in that field from a table named Complete_Products. Can someone please examine this query and tell me what I am doing wrong? I think I need to set a start value for the identity but not totally confident on how to do that.

Thanks. Below is my query with error.

Set Identity_Insert tblProduct on
INSERT INTO tblProduct
(productCode, productName, productNavID, CanBeMounted, productRetailPrice, productHeight, productWidth, Rank, CanBeFramed, ProductType)
SELECT Complete_products.APNum, Complete_products.Title, Complete_products.CategoryID, Complete_products.Mountable, Complete_products.price,
Complete_products.Height, Complete_products.Width, Complete_products.IRank, Complete_products.frameable, Complete_products.Typ
FROM Complete_products LEFT OUTER JOIN
tblProduct AS tblProduct_1 ON Complete_products.APNum = tblProduct_1.productCode
where tblProduct_1.productCode IS NULL

Msg 545, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Explicit value must be specified for identity column in table 'tblProduct' either when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to ON or when a replication user is inserting into a NOT FOR REPLICATION identity column.

Insert Out Of Range ID Value Into Identity Column?

Feb 7, 2007

I need to import some data into a table that is in a merge bi-directional publication. The table has an identity column that is being "auto managed". The ID numbers I need to import are not within any of the assigned "ranges". They are less than any of the current ranges.

Turning ident_insert on does not work because of the check constraints error. The merge replication triggers validate the ID range as well.

Edit: using SQL 2005 standard publisher and subsciber. Publication is 2005.

Identity Column Value Increments By 2 Rather Than 1 On Insert

Jul 26, 2007

I have an issue with a stored procedure activation on a service broker queue. The activation stored procedure simply RECEIVES the top message and then INSERTs a row into a table with an identity INT column. Each row inserted has the identity column value incremented by 2 rather than 1. Only one row is inserted in the table.

If the activation is set to OFF and then manually calling the original stored procedure the insert works fine and the identity column value is only incremented by one.

Do you have any suggestions on why the identity column value increments by 2?

Thanks.

Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_TargetTable'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'DW.TargetTable'. The duplicate key value is (58544748).First I checked with DBCC CHECKIDENT with NORESEED and found that there is difference in the current identity value and current column value. I fixed it by running DBCC CHECKIDENT. But to my surprise again got the same issue. interesting thing is that the error comes after inserting 65466 records.

Can't Insert Rows In Table With Identity Column

Dec 5, 2007

Hello, I have a problem. I am trying to pull data out of one system and bring it into a SQL Server database for faster retrieval. The original table does not have an identity column and has a composite primary key. The table I am inserting the data into matches the original table exactly except I have an Identity column that I need for the removal of duplicates. The task gets to the final commit and then fails telling me that it can't insert a NULL into an identity field. Why is it trying to insert a NULL, the field should be auto-populating. I did add the Identity field to the table after the SSIS package was already built, but I did go into the destination and fix the column mappings. For the Identity column I just selected the "skip" option or whatever it was. Why are the identities not being auto-inserted and why is SSIS throwing this error?

Can anyone help???

Thanks!
