Database Mail And Alerts

Oct 7, 2007

Hello everyone,

This is my first participation in this forum
In fact I am trying to prepare myself to earn MCITP and I faced few problems during setting up the following points
- SQL Server Database mail
- Alerts
- Operators

I want to create an internal process to inform me (via email and Net Send) if some errors happened or if some procedures run.

At the beginning I configured the Database Mail then I created new Operator (same name of domain account) and I checked all alert options (email, pager and net send) for this operator.

After that I created a new Alert (Raised based on Error Number) and I selected the created operator to be notified and I checked (email, pager and net send).
Right now everything is good and no problem in all above steps for me
But when the error raised the notification message shown at the operator screen,
But unfortunately nothing was sent to email

Note: I have a website (www.international-systems.net) with SMTP (mail.international-systems.net)
And I have created an email for this operation called (SQL_Server@international-systems.net) but nothing sent to the email
The configuration of my Database Mail was

Email Address: SQL_Server@international-systems.net
Display Name: Essam Binzghayo
Replay Email: SQL_Server@international-systems.net
Server Name: mail.international-systems.net
Port No: 25

Can you help me and try to answer the question
What was wrong in my configuration that caused failure sending email?

Thanks

SQL Server System Alerts

Feb 27, 2002

Maybe a dumb question, the standard alerts like Severity 24 and 25 that come when you install SQL Server, will these alerts be called by SQL Server itself if there is a problem. I was going to set up notifications for these but wasn't sure if it was worth the trouble.

Transact SQL :: Table Locking Happening When Removing Huge Data

May 14, 2015

declare @error int, @rowcount int
select @rowcount = COUNT(1) FROM  STG_BCDR;
while @rowcount > 0
begin
 BEGIN TRAN Deletion

[code]....

Above code i try to delete records batch by batch to avoid table locking at BCDR table.total records in this BCDR  table is 40,000 records.  However I run the code at execution plan, the BCDR table still clustered index scan which means that the locking still happend.

If i change the delete top (5000)...... to delete top (5).... then thre is clustered index seek, which is good..The problem here is  each time  only delete top 5 records which is means it will realy take very long time to remove those  data.

how to cater the situation inorder for me to delete those huge data without table locking happend. If table locking happend , then other user will not be able to access this table at the same time.

Transact SQL :: WMI Alerts Errors

Jul 25, 2008

I am having a problem registering any WMI Event in the ootMicrosoftSqlServerServerEvents namespace on all of my SQL Servers.  It doesn't matter what instance I append behind this either.  MSSQLSERVER fails as will any other named instance.  I get the same exact errors on every server which isn't surprising since they currently all have identical configurations, excluding hardware:

"The @wmi_query could not be executed in the @wmi_namespace provided. Verify that an event class selected in the query exists in the namespace and that the query has the correct syntax."and it doesn't apply because my servernames are all 8 characters long, and I already applied CU6 to the servers months ago.  The current @@Version on all Servers is:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3233.00 (X64)   Mar  6 2008 21:58:47   Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation  Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

the only differece is that some of them are x86 instead of X64, but the problem occurs on the x86 servers as well.What is interesting is I can register other WMI namespaces just fine, like the following from Jason Massies Blog:

EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_add_alert
@name =N'Test',
@enabled =1,
@delay_between_responses =0,
@include_event_description_in =0,
@wmi_namespace =N'.ROOTCIMV2',
@wmi_query =N'SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 600 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_LogicalDisk" AND TargetInstance.FreeSpace < 100000'
GO

I can create the WMI Alert on my laptop which is build 3054.

Transact SQL :: Sessions Need To Have UPDLOCK To Avoid Deadlocks

Nov 21, 2015

The benifit of UPDLOCK is that it avoids deadlock in case both sessions run the below query at the same time.The table has clustered index on ID column

----session 1 --------
begin transaction
select * from a1

update a1
set id = 22
where id = 2

----session 2 --------
begin transaction
select * from a1

update a1
set id = 22
where id = 2

Now to avoid deadlock in the above scenario we should use (UPDLOCK) hint in the select statement.Now my question is that deadlock will be avoided in this case when both the sessions use UPDLOCK hint. If only one session uses UPDLOCk and other does not then there will be deadlock .For example session 1 uses UPDLOCK hint this will hold the U lock on the row, but the session 2 does not use this hint and apply shared lock on the same row. Now there will be deadlock when session 1 tries to update the record and is blocked by shared locks of session 2. same will be the case with session 2 and both will wait for each other and hence dead lock.so what steps can be taken to avoid deadlocks in this case. I do not want to use Snapshot isolation.

Transact SQL :: Reducing Deadlocks From Conflicting Delete Statements

Jun 15, 2015

I am working on an app that getting quite a few deadlocks due to delete statements.  I have turned on the sql trace flags and pulled the offending delete statements out of the ERRORLOG and trying to mesh those up with the indexes defined on the table, etc. looking to see if there is anything that can be done strictly from the db side (no app code change) to reduce/eliminate these deadlocks.  I have ran some tests/played around with RCSI and even disabling lock escalation but neither have improved my results.

What I have done is to search the errorlog file for DELETE FROM Tablename, output those matching lines, then sort of normalize the literal values to # or XYZ, open in Notepad++, removed trailing whitespace + dups and sort to come up with these results for the unique list of offending T-SQL statements (a LOT easier to read in text editor so sending screen cap.

MailMessage message = new MailMessage();

message.From = fromAddress;
message.To.Add(toAddress);
message.Subject = subj.Text;message.IsBodyHtml = false;
message.Body = messg.Text;smtpClient.Host = "myhost";
smtpClient.Send(message);resultLabel1.Text = "Email sent!";
}catch
{resultLabel1.Text = "Send failure";
}
}
The queries get e-mail addresses from a SQL database for all people who work in a particular building.
The buttons will send an email if I give a To address.
How do I write the code so that clicking on the "Building A" button will send the e-mail to the addresses from the query results individually?
Any ideas?

Database Mail Attachments Filling Up The System Drive!

Apr 30, 2007

Hi all,

Has anyone run into this issue before?

My company uses database mail extensively for alerting and the like, and most emails sent have attachments. We've put in place procedures for removing emails older than a month from the MSDB database, however we've now had a client server completely run out of the disk space due to attachments being stored in the C:Documents and SettingsUserLocal SettingsTemp folder!?!

When I check the sysmail_delete_mailitems_sp sproc, it only removes entries in the MSDB tables, and doesn't remove these temporary files in the temp directory.

Does anyone know why SQL Server stores them in the temp directory of the service account user, as well as how we can remove them (apart from manually deleting the files), as we need to have an automated process for cleaning up emails, and at the moment SQL Server 2005 doesn't handle this very well.

I've checked this on our test server as well, and we're getting the same there, and this server is running the latest SP2 + hot fixes.

Thanks,

Reece.

Putting System Variables In A Send Mail Task

Jul 13, 2006

KB Article 906547 suggest that it's possible to have system variables in the Subject & Body of a Send Email Task. Such as this:

"Package>>> " + @[System::PackageName] +" was executed at>>> " + (DT_WSTR, 40) @[System::StartTime] + " by user>>> " + @[System::UserName] + " on Machine>>> " + @[System::MachineName]

Or this in an OnError event handler:

"Error in the task: " + @[System::SourceName] + "with the ID: " + @[System::SourceID] + " has failed at: " + (DT_WSTR, 20) @[System::ContainerStartTime] + "."

But when I do this I just get this exact text, no variables.

I'm obviously missing something basic but I can't find it. Can anyone offer a suggestion please?

Transact SQL :: Send Mail If Any Records Returned

Nov 4, 2015

I would like to use sp_send_dbmail, but I only want to send mail if there are any records returned.

I have found some solutions, but you must always first check if there is any record and later you can call "sp_send_dbmail" and within you must again query database for results.

What I want to do is to query database just once, because I dont want to use server performance two times. Query is bit complicated.

Database Connection Not Happening. Please Help!

Jan 13, 2004

Hi
I have deployed a website on a server having Windows2000, IIS5.0 . It uses SQL Server 2000 which is on another remote server. While developing I used the visual tools in VS.net to make a connection and have used DYnamic properties of the connection object to map the connection string to the entry in to the config file.
This works fine on my developement machine which has IIS and SQL Server 2000 on the same machine.
The entry in the web.config for my connection string is:

value= " server=xxx.yyy.com; Trusted_Connection=yes;provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Initial Catalog=events; User id=myuser; Password=password;"

where xxx.yyy.com is the server running SQL Server2000.

I do not get any error but the conncetion doesnot happen and my datagrid doesnot get filled.
The code for creating the connection is designer generated code.
Any clues?

Can't Find Out Where This Insert Is Happening.....

Sep 6, 2007

Hello people, I don't expect anyone to know the answer to this but I guess we'll see huh?

I'm using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio to do all my SQL stuff, and one of the tools that comes with this is a program called Microsoft SQL Profiler 2005. Anyways, so I'm using this profiler to capture SQL processes in the background while I work with the front end.

Here is a problem I'm facing... I am looking at this table right... and I see that when I do this certain process on the front end, it inserts 3 rows into the table. So I'm thinking "I know that on the tracer, I should be looking for an insert or a Stored Procedure with and insert in it."

So I use the tracer on the front end process and it shows me all the stored procedures that happen during the process of inserting these 3 rows into this table (btw this process is doing other things besides inserting stuff into this table, but it's what i'm currently working with at the moment.)

So what I do here at my job is I take this code, tweak it to work for our front end, and wah lah.... we're good to go. So in saying that, I make my own stored procedure and I all these stored procedures that are happening.

My result......

I get only 2 row inserts into the table.... the 1st row and the last row..... the middle row isn't inserted for some mysterious reason. I tried checking all the stored procedures for unique information pertaining to that specific row insert but to no avail I couldn't.

So my question to you guys is.... is there anything I'm overlooking that could possibly be inserting that row in the table? Thanks guys!

Tables Seem Too Big - Timeouts Happening

Jul 23, 2005

I have two problems I need some help with.First, I've just inherited a system and am delving into a few timeoutproblems that are causing problems for the users.Now, if I do a simple select * from the table (which looks to be thecause of the problem at this stage) in QA, I get the results back inless than a second. If I open the table in EM it takes about 10. Isthere a difference in viewing the data this way ? I'm used to EM beingvirtually the same speed. There is only one row. Minor questionreally, just something I'd like to understand if there is adifference.CREATE TABLE [QUERY] ([QUERY_ID] [numeric](18, 0) IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[CAT_ID] [numeric](18, 0) NOT NULL ,[QUERY_DESCR] [varchar] (50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOTNULL ,[USER_NAME] [varchar] (40) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOTNULL ,[USER_ID] [int] NOT NULL ,[IND_EURO] [char] (1) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULLCONSTRAINT [DF_QUERY_IND_EURO] DEFAULT ('N'),[IND_DGCOLUMNS] [char] (1) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOTNULL CONSTRAINT [DF_QUERY_IND_DGCOLUMNS] DEFAULT ('N'),[NO_GROUPS] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_QUERY_NO_GROUPS] DEFAULT(0),[NO_FIELDS] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_QUERY_NO_FIELDS] DEFAULT(0),[NO_LINES] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_QUERY_NO_LINES] DEFAULT (0),CONSTRAINT [PK_QUERY] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED([QUERY_ID]) WITH FILLFACTOR = 90 ON [PRIMARY] ,CONSTRAINT [FK_QUERY_QUERY_CATEGORY] FOREIGN KEY([CAT_ID]) REFERENCES [QUERY_CATEGORY] ([CAT_ID]) ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE) ON [PRIMARY]GOI don't think any re-indexing has been done on this (or the othertables in the db). I was wondering if constant adding/deleting rowscould cause the index to be massive and in need of a good clear out.Any pointers would be appreciated. From what I can tell, there wassome problems trying to get replication to work. I need to dig deeperto see if this is now correct.-------------------------Secondly, there is a another table in the same database.CREATE TABLE [FIELD_DATA] ([ID] [numeric](18, 0) IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[DATA_ID] [numeric](18, 0) NOT NULL ,[FIELD_ID] [numeric](18, 0) NULL ,[FIELD_CODE] [varchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOTNULL ,[FIELD_VALUE] [numeric](15, 5) NULL ,CONSTRAINT [PK_FIELDDATA] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED([ID]) WITH FILLFACTOR = 90 ON [PRIMARY]) ON [PRIMARY]GOIt holds approx 4 million rows. The rest of the tables have minimaldata and about the same amount (consider them the same if you will).Now, another 'copy' of this database is held elsewhere (differentclient data) and this holds 40 million rows. The difference is thatthe first DB is 4.5GB and the second 6.5GB (approx). Does this provemy theory that re-indexing would be a good idea ?ThanksRyan
