Transact SQL :: Create A User For Only One Database

Jul 17, 2015

I have a Java application (APP) that use SQL Server 2008 - 20014. In the SQL server there can be more than my database. During setup of the database the first user (ex:ADM) is created using MS SQL Server Management Studio (SMS). ADM can then launch the APP with proper credentials and connect to the database.ADM can then, in the APP, create new users for the APP and database. After some testing for proper CREATE and GRANTS I use the following code to create a new Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) user for the APP and database: CREATE LOGIN testuser WITH PASSWORD='password', DEFAULT_DATABASE = testdb

USE testdb
CREATE USER testuser FOR LOGIN testuser
GRANT AUTHENTICATE TO testuser WITH GRANT OPTION
GRANT CONNECT TO testuser WITH GRANT OPTION
GRANT ALTER ANY USER TO testuser WITH GRANT OPTION
GRANT CONNECT SQL TO testuser WITH GRANT OPTION
GRANT INSERT,SELECT,UPDATE, EXECUTE, DELETE TO testuser WITH GRANT OPTION

USE master
GRANT CONTROL SERVER TO testuser

USE testdb..When I the use the SMS and look at security the "testuser" is only added to testdb. To test I create a second database "testdb2" --> launch the APP to connect to testdb2 and can login with "testuser".I don't know if I give to much grants or missing one...proper TSQL so new users only have CRUD access to "testdb" and no other database on the SQL server.

I've created initial indexes for my table for the fuzzylookup process. I clicked on "Maintained index" but I don't see any triggers created on the reference table.

Do I create the triggers to maintain indexes myself?

Does anybody know how to create these triggers in terms of schema_name, Data_Modification_Statements etc.?

Would it be "Alter index <index name> REBUILD command?

SQL Server 2008 :: Store Long Values To Be Used In (IN) Statement In Separate Table?

Jul 14, 2015

I have several reports that are looking for a code within a certain set of codes or ranges. The specific list of codes to be including is determined by the end user. Currently my "IN" statement can be a hundred lines, listing several ranges, lists of specific codes, etc. I am constantly getting asked what codes does it include, is this code included, etc. Sometimes they'll give me a printed 10 page list of codes and want me to compare to what I have included in the report. Not ideal in the slightest.

What I'd like to do is have a table or a file of some kind somewhere where the end user can view the codes contained, add new ones, and delete ones they no longer want. Then I'd like to be able to just reference that file in my IN statement. Leaving the responsibility of listing the correct codes on them.

Transact SQL :: Verify Inserted Values From One Table (in CSV File) With Another Table (in Database)

Aug 4, 2015

I am looking for a Sql query to verify the inserted values from one table(in CSV file) with another table(in sql database)

For example: I have below Values column that is present in once CSV file, after my data migration the values get stored in Results table under Message column.

I need to very whether values(1X,1Y) are inserted in Message record "successfully inserted value 1X"

Values (CSV)
1X
1Y

Results Table(SQL)
CreatedDate                   Message
2015-08-04 08:45:29.203  successfully inserted value 1X
2015-08-04 08:44:29.103  TEst pass
2015-08-04 08:43:29.103  successfully inserted value 1X
2015-08-04 08:42:29.203  test point
2015-08-04 08:35:29.203  successfully inserted value 1Y
2015-08-04 08:30:29.203  Test Pass
2015-08-04 08:28:29.203  successfully inserted value 1Y

If all values are inserted:

Output:
All values from values table are inserted successfully
Total count of values inserted: 2
If only few values are inserted, example only 1X from Values table is inserted in Message

Example:
Results Table CreatedDate     Message
2015-08-04 08:45:29.203  successfully inserted value 1X
2015-08-04 08:44:29.103  TEst pass
2015-08-04 08:43:29.103  successfully inserted value 1X
2015-08-04 08:42:29.203  test point

Output:
All values from values are not inserted successfully in result table.
Total count of values inserted: 1

The 'sp' user I am connecting is the owner of the table. What could be the problem ?

Calculating Value From Two Separate Rows In The Same Table And Inserting As New Row In The Same Table

Jan 19, 2008

Code Block

Hi,

I'm working on a database for a financial client and part of what i need to do is calculate a value from two separate rows in the same table and insert the result in the same table as a new row. I have a way of doing so but i consider it to be extremely inelegant and i'm hoping there's a better way of doing it. A description of the existing database schema (which i have control over) will help in explaining the problem:

Table Name: metrics_ladder

id security_id metric_id value
1 3 80 125.45
2 3 81 548.45
3 3 82 145.14
4 3 83 123.32
6 4 80 453.75
7 4 81 234.23
8 4 82 675.42
.
.
.

Table Name: metric_details

id metric_id metric_type_id metric_name
1 80 2 Fiscal Enterprise Value Historic Year 1
2 81 2 Fiscal Enterprise Value Current Fiscal Year
3 82 2 Fiscal Enterprise value Forward Fiscal year 1
4 83 2 Fiscal Enterprise Value Forward Fiscal Year 2
5 101 3 Calendar Enterprise value Historic Year 1
6 102 3 Calendar Enterprise Value Current Fiscal Year
5 103 3 Calendar Enterprise value Forward Year 1
6 104 3 Calendar Enterprise Value Forward Year 2

Table Name: metric_type_details

id metric_type_id metric_type_name
1 1 Raw
2 2 Fiscal
3 3 Calendar
4 4 Calculated

The problem scenario is the following: Because a certain number of the securities have a fiscal year end that is different to the calendar end in addition to having fiscal data (such as fiscal enterprise value and fiscal earnings etc...) for each security i also need to store calendarised data. What this means is that if security with security_id = 3 has a fiscal year end of October then using rows with ids = 1, 2, 3 and 4 from the metrics_ladder table i need to calculate metrics with metric_id = 83, 84, 85 and 86 (as described in the metric_details table) and insert the following 4 new records into metrics_ladder:

id security_id metric_id value
1 3 101 <calculated value>
2 3 102 <calculated value>
3 3 103 <calculated value>
4 3 104 <calculated value>

Metric with metric_id = 101 (Calendar Enterprise value Historic Year 1) will be calculated by taking 10/12 of the value for metric_id 80 plus 2/12 of the value for metric_id 81.

Similarly, metric_id 102 will be equal to 10/12 of the value for metric_id 81 plus 2/12 of the value for metric_id 82,

metric_id 103 will be equal to 10/12 of the value for metric_id 82 plus 2/12 of the value for metric_id 83 and finally

metric_id 104 will be NULL (determined by business requirements as there is no data for forward year 3 to use).

As i could think of no better way of doing this (and hence the reason for this thread) I am currently achieving this by pivoting the relevant data from the metrics_ladder so that the required data for each security is in one row, storing the result in a new column then unpivoting again to store the result in the metrics_ladder table. So the above data in nmetrics_ladder becomes:

security_id 80 81 82 83 101 102
----------- -- -- -- -- -- --
3 125.45 548.45 145.14 123.32 <calculated value> <calculated value>
4 ...
.
.
.

which is then unpivoted.

The SQL that achieves this is more or less as follows:

*********
START SQL
*********

declare @calendar_averages table (security_id int, [101] decimal(38,19), [102] decimal(38,19), [103] decimal(38,19), [104] decimal(38,19),etc...)

-- Dummy year variable to make it easier to use MONTH() function
-- to convert 3 letter month to number. i.e. JAN -> 1, DEC -> 12 etc...
DECLARE @DUMMY_YEAR VARCHAR(4)
SET @DUMMY_YEAR = 1900;

with temp(security_id, metric_id, value)
as
(
select ml.security_id, ml.metric_id, ml.value
from metrics_ladder ml
where ml.metric_id in (80,81,82,83,84,85,86,87,88,etc...)
-- only consider securities with fiscal year end not equal to december
and ml.security_id in (select security_id from company_details where fiscal_year_end <> 'dec')
)
insert into @calendar_averages
select temppivot.security_id
-- Net Income
,(CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR))/12*[80])
+((12 - CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR)))/12*[81]) as [101]
,(CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR))/12*[81])
+((12 - CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR)))/12*[82]) as [102]
,(CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR))/12*[82])
+((12 - CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR)))/12*[83]) as [103]
,NULL as [104]
-- Share Holders Equity
,(CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR))/12*[84])
+((12 - CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR)))/12*[85]) as [105]
,(CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR))/12*[85])
+((12 - CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR)))/12*[86]) as [106]
,(CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR))/12*[86])
+((12 - CONVERT(DECIMAL, MONTH(cd.fiscal_year_end + @DUMMY_YEAR)))/12*[87]) as [107]
,NULL as [108]
-- Capex
-- Sales
-- Accounts payable
etc...
..
..
from temp
pivot
(
sum(value)
for metric_id in ([80],[81],[82],[83],[84],[85],[86],[87],[88],etc...)
) as temppivot
inner join company_details cd on temppivot.security_id = cd.security_id

*********
END SQL
*********

The result then needs to be unpivoted and stored in metrics_ladder.

And FINALLY, the question! Is there a more elegant way of achieving this??? I have complete control over the database schema so if creating mapping tables or anything along those lines would help it is possible. Also, is SQL not really suited for such operations and would it therefore be better done in C#/VB.NET.

Many thanks (if you've read this far!)

M.

Running Back Up Logs To A Different Server To Maintain A Copy

Dec 28, 1998

I am going to use the backup and restore function to copy data from one server to the other server. We would like to keep the servers in sink at this point (not instantaneously but update the server say once a day) and I would like to do this by using the back up transaction logs. I have tried to back up from individual transaction logs but in also seems to restore the full database also. The database is roughly 6 gig and transaction logs are about 25- 50 meg. I really do not want to have to restore the database every time.

I know I could set up replication but this has been more of a pain administering this on a daily basis. I would like to do a schedule and forget type of thing. This is going to be done on 6.5.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Thanks

Maintain Leading Zeros When Exporting To .csv Using SQL Server 2000 DTS

Jan 13, 2008

I am trying to export the result of a select into a .csv file using SQL Server 2000 DTS. The data for varchar fields has leading zeroes in the database, which is very much required in the csv file.

But, the .csv file trims the leading zeroes. How do we force to maintain the same data as in source?

I had used Text File Destination Connection as the destination, with the below options
File Extension: .csv
File Format: Delimited
File Type: ANSI
Text Qualifier: Double Quotes ("")
Row Delimiter: {CR}{LF}
Column Delimiter: comma

Source Data: 0123
Target Data (Requirement): 0123

The data in .csv: 123 (This is the issue)

When I open this file in a Text Editor, I do see the data in double quotes..."0123".

Thanks in advance.

[OT] User-Defined String Functions MS SQL Server 2005 Transact-SQL SQLCLR .Net

Feb 7, 2006

User-Defined string Functions MS SQL Server 2005 Transact-SQL SQLCLR (VB. Net, C#.Net, C++. Net)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to offer, free of charge, the following string functions MS SQL Server 2005 Transact-SQL SQLCLR (VB. Net, C#.Net, C++. Net):

AT(): Returns the beginning numeric position of the nth occurrence of a character expression within another character expression, counting from the leftmost character.
RAT(): Returns the numeric position of the last (rightmost) occurrence of a character string within another character string.
OCCURS(): Returns the number of times a character expression occurs within another character expression (including overlaps).
OCCURS2(): Returns the number of times a character expression occurs within another character expression (excluding overlaps).
PADL(): Returns a string from an expression, padded with spaces or characters to a specified length on the left side.
PADR(): Returns a string from an expression, padded with spaces or characters to a specified length on the right side.
PADC(): Returns a string from an expression, padded with spaces or characters to a specified length on the both sides.
