Transact SQL :: Replicating / Synching Data Between Two Tables On Same Database With Live Transactions
Oct 7, 2015
Client is running X- version of application and corresponding database size is huge. Now client's vendor is releasing Y-version of same application with many database schema changes (like new tables added, new columns added, renamed existing columns and etc) To upgrade to the Y-version, vendor is suggesting to my client that down the system and do the upgrade for application/database to Y-version. We are sure that this process will take days together to upgrade to the Y-version. My client is not ready to down the system for that long. So we are trying to find the solution with minimal down time. The approach we are thinking is,
1) Create the replicated database to another server (server2) from production server(server1) using golden gate with X-version
2) Create new tables/schema updated tables from Y-version database on same server1. Here for Updated schema tables we are planning to use the name <table_name_Y_version> as the same table name exists in X-version.
3)With above 2 steps, golden gate replicate the changes from production to server1 and server1 will have the new Y-version table schema (with different concatenate name ' _Y_version'). BTW , there is no affect for the production
4) At this stage we are planning to find best approach, to fill the '<table_name>_Y_version' from X-version tables. two challenges here a) all data needs to be moved to Y-version tables b) they have to sync data in real time.
we thought of going to
a) ssis package to pump the data to Y-version tables, but real time data will not sync.
b) trigger based technique, previous experience said, lot of load
c) thinking about sql replication.

I need to live update my SQL-Server 2000 database from AS400 database.
I usually use Access 2002 database between the AS400 database and the SQL-Server 2000 database to reflect any live update.
I use the (Link Tables...) option when creating a new table in access and link it with the ODBC to connect with the AS400 database.
After that I work with the Access link table.
Is there any tool in SQL-Server 2000 to show the live transactions in AS400 databasee so I can work on it?
Please advise

I asked this question on another forum, and it was suggested that using SQL Server might be the way to go.
What I would like to do is create a database that can store detailed employee payroll information for workshop production. Included in this db would be employee info, job details, hours worked, pay rate, and so on and so forth. That will probably be the relatively easy part.
I would like to allow supervisors (job coaches) to enter this data on a Pocket PC (windows mobile) device, and then be able to synchronize the pocket pc to a workstation, allowing their data to be uploaded to the main database at the end of the day.
Can that be done using SQL Server as both the main networked database as well as having it (or a lite version of some sort) installed on a Pocket PC for synchronization purposes as described above?
Thanks for any input.

Hi,
I need to implement SQL Reporting Services but do not wish to use the production database for running the reports against. I intend to set a seperate server for reporting services. The data only needs to be refreshed on a daily basis, during slient hours. What would be the best way to copy data from the production to the reporting services server?
Thanks

have 2 databases in sql server 2000
Live
Dev
I need to append all the data from LIVE into DEV environment. I have tried using MS Access (linking tables & importing tables and running APPEND query to update the rows from LIVE to DEV but PK & FK is causing problems as some data will have the same ID's....
Could I use DTS--Access wizard in SQL Server.
What is the best option to use?
Thanks all in advance

Hi,
I have a number of "join" tables ie joins records from two other tables for example, an employee may be responsible for more than one product so the join table would look like this:
table name: employee_products
Employee_id foreign key from employee table
product_id goreign key from products table
My question is, how do I replication this table? Replication requires all table to have a primary key field. In this case, both fields are foreign keys and I dont have a primary key as the same data appears regularly in either field.
How should I get around this so I can implement replication? I dont want to have to add another field to be the primary key field.
Thanks

I have a table that is used for reporting, the problem is that the data in the table is refreshed every 30 minutes with a bulk insert. I am trying to find a way to have two tables that are mirror images of each other and when the loading table is loaded, then the table assumes the identity of the reporting table. The basic prinicpal is I need to have the table be available almost all the time and when the bulk insert is happening, users cannot query. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I can't seem to find the answer to this in the documentation.
I have several tables that I want to replicate via transactional replication. These tables do have some foreign keys between them.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of "one table per publication" versus "one publication with all of these tables listed as articles"?
If I do not define these in the same publication, will I get into trouble with the order that data is loaded to satisfy the foreign key constraints?

Hi there,
I have decided to move all my transaction handling from asp.net to stored procedures in a SQL Server 2000 database. I know the database is capable of rolling back the transactions just like myTransaction.Rollback() in asp.net. But what about exceptions? In asp.net, I am used to doing the following:
<code>Try 'execute commands myTransaction.Commit()Catch ex As Exception Response.Write(ex.Message) myTransaction.Rollback()End Try</code>Will the database inform me of any exceptions (and their messages)? Do I need to put anything explicit in my stored procedure other than rollback transaction?
Any help is greatly appreciated

Hi,
Please let me know if it is possible to replicate a table with identity property defined in it. Both the publisher and subscriber tables have identity property defined. Which option should be used while setting up transactional replication to allow the identity values at the publisher pushed to the subscriber, which also has identity property defined? Not for replication option with the identity property also fails. Whichever option I choose I get the error, 'An explicit value for the identity column in table 'jobs_id_nfr' can only be specified when a column list is used and IDENTITY_INSERT is ON.' This works only if the identity property is not defined at the subscriber. But, I need to have the identity property defined at the subscriber also because the subscriber should be an exact copy of production.
Thanks in advance,
Praveena

I have the following requirement that I would like some inspiration on.We have a requirement in our database to allow data to be entered that may show data errors, however the errors are a bit complex so that a normal FK relationship can not catch it.How this will work is
1) the user will be allowed to enter data in the database, the data can be across a lot of tables, so we will do it in a transaction
2) a store procedure will be executed that before commit will check the data (as a dirty uncommitted read), the store procedure either passes or fail, if it passes the data is committed into the database.
3) If the stored procedure reports that the data is not consistent it is rolled back, and the reason it is rolled back (which will be generated from the store procedure) should be stored in the database.
What I would like to know is this, is there any way of structuring the the code in a specific way that will rollback the dirty changes but commit the "Reason why it failed" bit of it.

When replicating a table which has an identity column I get the error: "Procedure cp_insert_tblname expects parameter @C1, which was not supplied.". The stored procedure appears to be called without any parameters so my insert stored procedure does not work. I know I'm missing something basic here!! Do I have to add the field names when telling replication to use a custom stored procedure. If not, how do arguments get passed to my SP, as globals somehow?
Any info greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Jay

I want to restore a database (from an encrypted .bak file) - but *not* over the live original if you take my meaning. Encryption is the standard AES-256 that comes with Sql Server 2014 btw. I don't want the original touched/altered in any way. I would like to capture a success message if possible.I can extract the physical device name of the database in question using the following code:
SELECT physical_device_name, *
FROM msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily
WHERE media_set_id =(SELECT TOP 1 media_set_id
FROM msdb.dbo.backupset
WHERE database_name='MyDatabase'
AND type='D'
ORDER BY backup_start_date DESC)
I would like if the newly restored database was rename to something different than 'MyDatabase' (as shown above) and has different logs than the original. If possible, and capture a success message when restored.

But in dbo.Table3 I need to have the Id column from dbo.Table2 populated since its a foreign key constraint in dbo.Table3. How do I go about doing this?

To setup some data in some new tables in t-sql 2012, I need to create a relationship between 2 tables were data is obtained from an inventory file. The inventory file will be loaded to sql server 2012 from an excel spreadsheet.
1. Columns that will be loaded to the first table are:
1. Inventory category number,
2. Inventory date,
3. Inventory Category total amount, and
4. Inventory category quantity on hand.
This table will have a column called Item number. This will need to be the value of item number that is in the second table.
2. Columns that will be loaded to the second table are:
1. Item Number,
2. item date,
3. Item price, Item quantity on hand.
Thus can you show me the sql that will load the table into both tables? This sql would also need to show how to obtain the values of item number from the second table and place that value into the first table.

I need to copy all the data from all the tables in a database to a copy of this database on another server.
What feature of SSIS should I take advantage of to accomplish this?
We have an SLA for 8am, most times the data warehousing jobs complete at 8:05am. Adding an additional process/set of tasks to this package would obviously make matters so I'm trying to update/copy/replicate the data in the fastest manner. Typically we're talking 2 marts (10-20GB) with 2 large tables (5-10 mill records) and 20 marts (0.5 - 5 GB) with many more smaller tables (~40 tables with record count ranging from 1 to a million)
Additionally please indicate if the design/feature you suggest can handle (pushing schema changes and additions to the target server) schema changes or new tablesviews added to the source database.
My only idea so far...is using the import wizard (in Management Studio) to create an SSIS package (top copy all the tables from one server to another) and saving it to the server, Then executing this package after the job is complete. However this would not work if the schema of a table changed, or if a a table is added. Moreover I don't think I can edit this package in visual studio.

I have a database consisting of two main tables and 12 sub tables.
This was leading to increase in database size. So we thought of storing the sub tables data in the main tables in form of xml in a column of varchar(2000) type.
So we created a new database that only had 2 tables and we stored the data of the sub tables in the new column of the main table.
Surprisingly we saw that the database size increased rather than decreasing .

I was wondering if there was another method to determine when a database was last backed up without using the backup history tables in msdb? whether using DBCC DBINFO, DBCC PAGE on a specific database page...etc.
Also, when restoring a database, is there a trace flag you can use to force restore details to be written to the error log?

I've a table named Master in which a column is referenced in other tables like Child1, Child2,.. ChildN. I've deleted a part of data( say Column Id values 1,2,3,4,5) from all the Child tables which pointed to Master table Id column.
Now, I want to delete the same Id values from Master table as there rows are not referred in any of the child tables. When I try to delete the Id values 1 thru 5 from Master table, it is scanning all child tables for the references and taking lot of time for the deletion.
Is there any way to specify to the system(in the query) to delete the Master table values without scanning the child tables..?

Hi,
Does SQL mobile require port 1433 to be open for RDA? I was under the impression that all synching occured through port 80. But when 1433 is restricted a connection cannot be completed.
I may be missing something really simple. My understanding of tcp/ip networking concepts are not very solid.

Hi,
I am very new to SQL Server. Plenty of SQL knowledge but the whoe SQL server enviornment is new.
I am working with SQL Server 2005. My task is to generate reports without affecting our live database. I have setup a second server and installed SQL Server 2005 on that too. My thought was that maybe I could mirror or replicate the table I require over to this new server and run my queries from here. Is this easy to do ?
I read that mirroring might not work as it is solely for back up /fall over purposes and that data on the mirrored server would not be accessible.
I have also been looking at SSIS but at the moment this is all a bit like double dutch to me ! Can anyone point me in the right direction, preferably somewhere beginner friendly ie not overly complicated !!
Thanks a mill,
Sophie
