Transact SQL :: Stored Procedure To Determine Which Databases To Restore?

Sep 27, 2015

I have 5 databases that the user will chose which ones to restore. I was thinking the variable with the 5 database names separated by commas. I was thinking about using the CONTAIN function but two of the databases have the same name except for a few letters at the end.

Transact SQL :: Looping Through Multiple Servers And Databases In Stored Procedure

Aug 27, 2015

I am doing some administrative tasks and need to collect some principals information from multiple instances and user databases.

I have table "dbo.instances" with list of instances.
I have databases from "sys.databases".

How can I execute the query to get principals information from "sys.database_principals" on each remote instance and database. I know that can use cursor, but not sure how to do this with multiple servers and databases.

Stored Procedure Dynamically Determine Columnname

Dec 3, 2006

I want to dynamically determine which column I select data from. The table I want to select from looks like this:tblSexualitySexualityID int PKEN nvarchar(20)NL nvarchar(20)DE nvarchar(20)Based on the value of variable @LanguageColumnName I want to select the value from either column "EN", "NL" or "DE"In the sample below the value of @LanguageColumnName is "NL".Unfortunately the value of sexualityname is ALWAYS: "tblSexuality.NL" and not the value from that specific column...how can I alter my procedure so that it does the select the value from that column?ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[spFindUsers]@LanguageColumnName nvarchar(3),@startRowIndex int,@maximumRows intASBEGINSET NOCOUNT ON;
declare @tblSexualityName nvarchar(40)set @tblSexualityName='tblSexuality.' + @LanguageColumnName SELECT UserName,UserCode,ThumbNailPicture,BirthDate,ShowAgeOnly,IsMale,NearestBigCity,DistanceToNearestBigCity,Description,IsDonator,IsVIP,SexualityName FROM(SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY UserCode) as RowNum,tblUserData.UserName,UserCode,IsDonator,IsVIP,Description,BirthDate,IsMale,ShowAgeOnly,tblCountries.CountryPicture,@tblSexualityName as sexualityname,tblCountries.CountryName,ThumbNailPicture,LastActivityDate,UserRanking,NearestBigCity,DistanceToNearestBigCity FROM aspnet_Users INNER JOIN tblUserData ON aspnet_Users.UserId = tblUserData.UserID INNER JOIN tblCountries ON tblUserData.Country=tblCountries.CountryID INNER JOIN tblSexuality ON tblUserData.Sexuality=tblSexuality.SexualityID) as MemberInfoWHERE RowNum > @startRowIndex AND RowNum <= (@startRowIndex + @maximumRows)END

Stored Procedure Using Multiple Databases

Sep 14, 2006

Ok, this is kind of an odd problem.  Back in June we were having problems with our call manager software, and they decided to have it just start usinga new database.  Now I'm trying to generate some reports which need to cover both the old call stats and the new, so that means the stored procedure builds a temp table and populates it from both databases. This works perfectly fine in Management Studio, and when being called from Excel. However when I try to call it from an ASP.NET web app using SqlCommand.ExecuteReader(), I only get results from the new database! What on earth could cause that?

Calling Other Databases From Stored Procedure

Jan 8, 2007

Hi,
I am working with multiple databases on the same server and in a stored procedure I need to be able to call on one of them.
Here is an example of what I am trying to do in this stored procedure:create procedure sp_procedure(@variable int)select anitem from atable where selection = @variable
declare @anothervariable Char(3)
select @anothervariable = item_that_determines_database from atable where selection = @variable
use dbo.@anothervariableselect count(id) from Some_table where selection = @variable
The database is not found using this method and I do need to use it in a stored procedure.  All of the databases being used are (3) letter names in lower case (aaa, bbb, ccc, etc...), the info that @anothervariable pulls from the table is the name of that database but in all caps.  Does this part make a difference?
Also, what method could I use to get the database variable to read from that selected database?

Thank-you for your help.

Eric

Changing Databases In An Stored Procedure

Aug 24, 1999

Hello all,

I have discovered that you cannot use the "USE" command in a stored procedure to change to another database.

Is there any way I can change to another database within a stored procedure besides calling another stored procedure on the database I want?

Thanks,

Nev.

Stored Procedure To Loop Through Databases

Mar 16, 2015

We're running SQL Server 2008 and have run into a bit of a situation. We have 5 databases all with the same tables and we are trying to create a query that will loop through the different databases and output the results per company database. I originally did a cursor, but my boss wants the query to be in a more readable format:

His ideal wish would be the query in a stored procedure and the cursor to create the input parameter for the stored procedure for the different databases.I've tried looking through some forums and googling some possibilities but can't seem to make any sense of them.

declare @dbname varchar(100)
,@sql varchar(max)
createtable #TempDBs (
dbname nvarchar(100)
, Orig_Jnl int
, BaseRef int
, Posting_Date date

[code]....

Distincts Databases On The Same Stored Procedure

Jun 28, 2006

Hi!

I need to use two distincts databases on the same stored procedure. One, database1, is where I want to place the procedure, and where the table the procedure populates is (table1). The other, database2, hosts the table (table2) from where I select some data to put into table1 in database1.
Database1 name is fixed, while database2 name may change. So, I would like to pass database2 name as a parameter to the procedure. In this simple example, it works fine:

use database1
go
create procedure teste @db_name varchar(10) as
exec ('select * from ' + @db_name + '.dbo.table2')

But the problem is that in my procedure, database2 is used in a cursor, something like this:

create procedure myProcedure @year int, @pDatabase2 varchar(30) AS

declare ...

WHILE ...
BEGIN
  ...
  declare cursor1 cursor for
 select column1, column2 from @pDatabase2.dbo.table2
 where ...

  open cursor1
fetch next from cursor1 into ...

  close cursor1
  deallocate cursor1

 -- insert data into table
 INSERT INTO table1
     VALUES...

....

And I get an error if I try to use the exec! How can I do it? Can anyone help me please?

         Thank you!

Backup/Restore Stored Procedure

Oct 5, 2006

Hi there

I just want to create Stored Procedure which will do following thing

i) Create a text file, which will have a Schema Script(including all the constraint & others, for a database(by passing Parameter)

ii) the same file must also have, all the data from the selected database tables,in again plain text format (could be CSV, or Tab SV, etc...)

I mean to say, the file should be act as the full backup of database, in plain text.

The same need to be done in the reverse order, this SP will do following things

i)Open the file created by first SP, create new database, with same name as backup in SP one

ii) create the tables, by reading the Schema script.

iii) Insert all the data in corrsponding tables.

For EX:

--creating backup

sp_CreateDatbaseBackup('DatabaseName')

--Restoring

sp_RestoreDatabaseBackup('FileName')

I know abou the Backup & restore in SQL Server 2005, but they gives me backup as .bkp file which is not editable. I too cant use the SSIS(just only SPs)

I want an editable full Backup and Restore.

Please help me in creating these SPs or any other idea, solution ?

OR

any other FREE third party tool which will make the Full database backup & restore in one go & in plain text file.

Regards,

Thanks.

Accessing Multiple Databases From Stored Procedure In SQL 2000

May 16, 2006

Hi ,

I have around 5 databases with same structure used to store data for different locations and services.

I have created an intermediate database which will have all the stored procedures to access data from above 5 databases.

My queries are common to all the databases. so,I would like to pass database name as an argument to my stored proc and execure query on specified database.

I tried this doing using "USE Databasename " Command. but it says ...We can not use "USE command " in stored proc or triggers. so ..what i did is ..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CREATE PROCEDURE TestDB_access(@dbname varchar(100))
AS

BEGIN

DECLARE @localDB varchar(100)

Set @LocalDB=@dbname

if @LocalDB='XYZ'

EXEC ('USE XYZ ')
elseif @LocalDB='ABC'

EXEC ('USE ABC')

Select * from Mytable

END

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I run this from my database , it gives me an error "unable to find table "mytable".

What is the best way to make my queries work with all the databases.

Thanks in advance

Venu Yankarla

Transact SQL :: Backup / Restore Tools Which Can Restore Multiple Environments

Jun 25, 2015

I am looking for a SQL Backup/Restore tools which can restore multiple environments.  Here is high level requirements.

1.  We have 4 DBs, range from 1 TB - 1.5 TB Each Database.  When we restore to QA, DEV, or Staging, we usually restore 4 of them.
2.  I am looking for the speed to complete restoring between 1 - 2 hours for 4 DBs.

I am evaluating the Dephix Software but the setup is very complex and its given us a lot of issues with Windows Authentions, and failure in the middle of the backup.  I used Guess Software many years ago but can't find it on the web site any more. Speed is very important for us mean complete restoring as fast as possible.  We are on SQL 2012 and SQL 2008 R2.We are currently using NETAPP Technology and I have Redgate Backup Tool but I am mainly looking for fast Restore Process.

Transact SQL :: Delta Process In Stored Procedure

Apr 30, 2015

Currently through my stored procedure, I am pulling the data from my source systems in the way Daily Truncate and loading the data in to my database table. Currently my query looks as follows,

SELECT
     a.col1,a.col2,b.col3,b.col4,c.col5
FROM
a
left outer join b ON a.col1 = b.col1
left outer join c ON b.col1 = c.col1.

Now, I want to change the above one to delta process(I have updateddate field in all the tables). The requirement is any of these 3 tables has updateddate = getdate() then i need to take "a.col1,a.col2,b.col3,b.col4,c.col5" columns and push to destination
table.

I think usually delta process means we will use to consider the key table, in that table if there is an updated record will take that record and join with the other required tables to pull the updated record. But these logic seems different.how to build the query for the above delta process? Since it is an urgent requirement need to implement asap.

Transact SQL Debugger Not Stopping In Stored Procedure

Sep 5, 2007

I am trying to use the Transact-SQL debugger to step through a stored procedure on a server to determine where it is failing. I right-click the stored procedure I want to debug in the Query Analyzer's Object Browser and choose Debug... In the Debug Procedure dialog I fill in the values for the parameters, choose the Auto roll back checkbox, and press Execute.

The T-SQL Debugger screen comes up with my stored procedure and a message on the bottom of Waiting for user input. But I can input nothing, neither click on the icons on top, set breakpoints, or doing anything else, as the stored procedure runs to the end and gives me the return code.

If I subsequently set some breakpoints in my stored procedure and try the Go button. Once again the stored procedure runs to the end without stopping at any breakpoint.

In both cases, the stored procedure shows the waiting icon as it proceeds to the end, so that I can not click on anything to stop it.

I have been told this is may be a permissions issue between myself as a client on my machine and the stored procedure on the server. If so, does anybody know what I the things that have to be done on the permissions side to be able to debug the stored procedure using the Transact SQL debugger.
