Transact SQL :: UPDATE Statement Failing On Unique Key Constraint

Jul 9, 2015

I'm trying to update rows in a simple table that has a UNIQUE KEY CONSTRAINT defined on one of its columns. Here is the DDL for the table:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[SEC_USER](
 [SEC_USER_ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
 [USER_CODE] [varchar](100) NOT NULL,
 [USER_NAME] [varchar](128) NOT NULL,
 [EMP_CODE] [varchar](6) NOT NULL,

[Code] ....

When trying to execute the UPDATE statement the query fails with a constraint violation error:

Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'UQ__SEC_USER__A039F1EE62FE8444'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.SEC_USER'. The duplicate key value is (34337).

What has  me baffled is that I'm not doing any insert. Also, the value that it's referencing - 34337 - doesn't exist in the table at all. I'd rather not drop the constraint.

Help Fixing The UPDATE Statement Conflicted With The CHECK Constraint

Apr 8, 2008

Hi all,While using ACCESS and asp for years, I have just had to move my site onto a new server and the opportunity to move my 50MB access DB to msSQL was too good an opportunity to pass up! I used the Migration tools from MS and the data migrated nicely, I can do everything that I used to be able to do on the forum, except when a new user signs up or a member tries to edit their profile, the following error message comes up:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The UPDATE statement conflicted with the CHECK constraint "SSMA_CC$PORTAL_MEMBERS$M_ICQ$disallow_zero_length". The conflict occurred in database "DATABASENAME", table "dbo.PORTAL_MEMBERS", column 'M_ICQ'.

I have checked the database and the dbo.PORTAL_MEMBERS table and except for the autoincrement number, uname and pwrd, everything else is set to accept nulls.

I also went though and filled in everything on the form then I could update.

the same error applies when signing up - the only difference is the name of the table

I then tried to change the data straight in the table by opening it in Server Management Studio Express and got the same error if I did not fill in everything. This tells me that it is not the code, much to my relief!

So I am figuring that there is something somewhere in the DB that I have to change? could someone point me in the right direction - and as I am VERY NEW to this database system, and do not know my way around (it took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to open a table! *LOL*) very clear instructions would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time :-)

Transact SQL :: Update Unique Records Count For Subquery?

What Is The Difference Between A UNIQUE INDEX And A UNIQUE CONSTRAINT?

Sep 22, 2004

A UNIQUE INDEX must inherently impose a unique constraint and a UNIQUE CONSTRAINT is most likely implemented via a UNIQUE INDEX. So what is the difference? When you create in Enterprise Manager you must select one or the other.

Unique Constraint And Unique Index, What's The Difference?

Jun 24, 2006

What's the difference in the effect of the followings:
CREATE UNIQUE NONCLUSTERED INDEX
and
ALTER TABLE dbo.titles ADD CONSTRAINT
titleind UNIQUE NONCLUSTERED

I found there're two settings in Indexs/Keys dialog box of the management studio, Is Unique, and Type. The DDL statements above are generated by setting Is Unique to yes plus Type to Index, and just Type to Unique Key, respectively. What's the difference between them?

Unique Constraint Error When There Is No Constraint

May 13, 2008

We are using SQL CE 3.5 on tablet PCs, that synchs with our host SQL 2005 Server using Microsoft Synchronization Services. On the tablets, when inserting a record, we get the following error:
A duplicate value cannot be inserted into a unique index. [ Table name = refRegTitle,Constraint name = PK_refRegTitle
But the only PK on this table is RegTitleID.

The table structure is:
[RegTitleID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[RegTitleNumber] [int] NOT NULL,
[RegTitleDescription] [varchar](200) NOT NULL,
[FacilityTypeID] [int] NOT NULL,
[Active] [bit] NOT NULL,

The problem occurs when a Title Number is inserted and a record with that number already exists. There is no unique constraint on Title Number.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Unique Index Vs Unique Constraint

Mar 7, 2001

Hi everyone,
I need urgent help to resolve this issue...
As far as the performance goes which one is better..
Unique Index(col1, col2) OR Unique constraint(col1, col2) ?
Unique constraint automatically adds a unique index
and unique index takes care of uniqueness then whats the use of unique constraint ?

Which one do one use ?

Unique Constraint Vs Unique Index

BOL says a unique constraint is preferred over a unique index. It also states that a unique constraint creates a unique index. What then is the difference between the two, and why is a constraint preferred over the index?

Transact SQL :: Update Statement In Merge Does Not Work

Merge TST.dbo.LockCombination AS LKC1

Transact SQL :: Case Statement In Update Clause

Jun 4, 2015

I have used the below update query. However, its updating only the first value. Like its updating AB with volume when c.Type  = ABC, similarly for CD. Its not updating based on the 2nd or the next case condition.

Update XYZ Set AB = a.Amt * (CASE WHEN c.Type = 'ABC'  THEN  (c.volume)
 WHEN c.TYPE = 'DEF'  THEN  (c.volume)
 WHEN c.Type = 'GHI'  THEN  (c.volume)
 Else 0
 END),
 CD = CASE WHEN c.Type = 'MARGIN' THEN '4105.31'
 WHEN c.Type = 'ABC' THEN '123.1'
 WHEN c.Type = 'DEF' THEN '234.2'
WHEN c.Type = 'GHI' THEN '567.1'
END
 from table1 a join table2 b
 on a.Cust = b.Customer
 join table3 c
 on b.account = c.account and b.channel =c.channel

Why its not working properly? But if i use Select statement instead of update query its working properly.

Transact SQL :: Update Statement Truncates Varchar Value

Oct 8, 2015

In t-sql 2012, data is obtained from [Inputtb].lockCombo1 where it is defined as varchar(8). The data is copied to test.dbo.LockCombination.combo where the field is defined as varchar(8). This copies all the data except the last right column.

Basically a value that is '12-34-56' intially from [Inputtb].lockCombo1 ends on in st.dbo.LockCombination.combo looking like

'12-34-5'. In this case the last value of '6' is missing. I have tried to use various string functions to obtain the entire value that should be  '12-34-56'  and ends up looking like '12-34-5'.

Here are 2 sqls that I have used and I get the same results:

1.
UPDATE LKC
SET LKC.combo = lockCombo1
FROM [Inputtb] A
JOIN test.dbo.School SCH ON A.schoolnumber = SCH.type and A.schoolnumber =
@SchoolNumber
JOIN test.dbo.Locker LKR ON SCH.schoolID = LKR.schoolID AND A.lockerNumber =

[Code] ....

I can not change the definition of the columns since these are production settings.

Thus can you  should me modified sql that will end up with the entire value of 8 characters in the [Inputtb].lockCombo1 column?

Transact SQL :: Get Identity Column Value When Update Statement Fails?

Sep 9, 2015

My current proc updates(updates using joins of two or three tables) millions of records as per the condition provided for each department.

However, when the proc fails it writes to a ErrorTable, ERROR_MESSAGE(), ERROR_SEVERITY() and which department has failed.

Since the records are updated keeping the selected departments in loop, I get the department in a temp variable. Now, I was asked to log the specific record where the failure was occured.Something like log the identity column value or primary key value which record has failed.

Transact SQL :: UPDATE Statement - Returns Correct Results When Running Separately

May 1, 2015

SQL Ver: 2008 (not r2)
Problem:  The following code returns correct results when moving variable declarations and update statement outside a stored procedure, but fails to return a value other than zero for the "COMPANY TOTAL" records.  The "DEPT TOTAL" result works fine both in and outside the sp.This may have to do with handling NULL values since I was getting warning message earlier involving a value being eliminated by an aggregate function involving a NULL.  I only got this message when running inside the sp, not when running standalone.  I wrapped the values inside the SUM functions with an ISNULL, and now return a zero rather than NULL for the "COMPANY TOTAL" records when running inside SP.All variable values are correct when running.

SQL CODE:
DECLARE
@WIPMonthCurrent date = (SELECT TOP 1 WIPMonth FROM budxcWIPMonths WHERE ActiveWIPPeriod = 'Y')
  select @WIPMonthCurrent as WIPMonthCurrent

Unique Constraint

May 19, 2004

What is the simplest way to add a unique constraint on a field of type varchar(7) that can allow any number of <NULL>'s?

I only want to ensure that when this field is updated, it is updated with a value that has not been used.

IF EXISTS (SELECT Project FROM tbProjects WHERE Project = @cProject)
RAISERROR('Project number already used!',16,1)
ELSE
UPDATE tbProjects SET Project = @cProject WHERE ProjectID = @iProjectID
GO

Also, I cannot allow the user to chante the project field value once it is set.

Any suggestions?

UNIQUE Constraint

Aug 16, 2006

i'm just creating a table, no data as yet.

i have a varchar(15) fld with Nulls NOT allowed

i want to create a constraint that this field named ipkey be UNIQUE.

I'm having trouble with the syntax for the constraint expression.

i've typed in the SQL Server Managment Studio Express Expression field:
UNIQUE(ipkey)
and
@unq_ipkey UNIQUE(ipkey)

SQL Server Managment Studio Express complains:
"Error validating constrating, do you want to edit expression"

So - what am i doing wrong?
And thanks for taking the time to help.

Unique Constraint

Dec 3, 2007

Hi,

I have a table with two column, c1 and c2. c1 is set as primary key. I want c2 to be set with unique constraint.

I choose this talbe in object explorer, right click and select modify. Then I choose "index/key" from "table designer" menu.

The problem is that in the "index/key" dialog, the "Columns" item (under General) is always c1. if I click the "..." button to popup "index column", I could only choose either "c1" or <None> under "column name" dropdownlist.

How could I choose c2 and set unique constraint on it?

Thx

Enforcing Precedence Constraint While NOT Failing Package(On Failure Logic Ignored)

Aug 1, 2007

I have designed an SSIS package that :

(1) contains a for loop task (in which all the logic is contained) that loops through a particular folder for excel files
WITHIN THE FOR LOOP:
(2) pulls data from an excel file into SQL Tables(Data Transformation Task)
(3) run stored proc to validate data (Execute SQL TASK)
(4)ON SUCCESS of executing the SQL Task (Script Task - move file to success or reject folder based on value returned from sproc)
(5)ON FAILURE of executing the stored proc (Script Task - move file to bad format failure)

NOTE:
I have modified the MaximumErrorcount property of (1 FOR LOOP) and (3 EXECUTE SQL TASK) and the package itself to 0.
In order to deal with badly formatted excel files...I do not want the package to stop for every missing tab in excel file or data entry error. I simply want the badly formatted file to be moved to a special folder

PROBLEM:
on failure logic is never executed (I have 2 options after step (3)) on success do step (4) on failure do step (5)
step (3) fails...then it simply iterates to the next file
step 5 is never executed

Is this because I changed the maximumerrorcount property?
What am I doing wrong witht he Precendence Logic?

I need to create a constraint on this table that will not allow me to have two rows that are prime for the same code. So the following insert statement should fail:
