In my procedure I need to pull data from a database which is on other server and domain.
As usual I have used the below query but having troubles with mode of authentication.
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('SQLNCLI', 'Server=x.x.x.xsyz;Trusted_Connection=yes;','SELECT top 10 * FROM pcm.stats.visits') AS a
I get the below error:
"Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication"
I understand from the error that the domain and mode of authentication is different.
I use windows auth and we are given sql auth on the remote server which is on different domain.
I was suggested to use 'sp_addlinkserver' to link the remote server and query the data.
I am just curious to know if we can succeed through link server, is there any script to use sql authentication of remote server in my procedure and pull the data.

I can use Profiler to see database usage activity. However, in addition to it, is there a good query I can use to see whether user databases are being used (last select, last update, last alter or last delete etc., with date/time stamp)?I am looking for both SQL2000 and SQL2005 as we need to decommission some of the older servers.

I need a query to list the tables in SQL sever with respective database they belong across databases.
I can obtain list of tables from Sys.Tables / Sys.Objects Views but how do I correlate to which DB a table belongs to?
The Sys.Databases View list the  databases with their respective Ids. But, the DBID is not part of Sys.Tables / Sys.Objects Views.
Which View will allow me to fetch database to table mappings?Â

I'm wondering if there is some sql I can run to check properties on a table. This would be used to verify things like data types, allow nulls and default values have been set to avoid mistakes. This could be done manually one table and one column at a time, but it would be a lot easier to look at it in the results window.

Using SQL 2012R2 Enterprise. I am unable to get the Size of the FILESTREAM data using the query below. The FileStreamSizeMB column is always Zero, but the other columns for log and data sizes are ok. The FileStream data directory has 2GB of data on the file system... Everything is working perfect, except I can not calculate size for FILESTREAM. My database is using the following Hard Disks.
D: = data files.
E: = log files.
F: = FILESTREAM data

A trigger existed on the job steps table which captured any changes before and after. The insert table was limited changes to 4000 characters.
SQL Server 2012 SP2 Enterprise Edition (11.0.5058.0) on Windows Server 2008 R2
At some point a few months ago we encountered an issue where we hit a size limit of ~4000 characters on the amount of text we could enter into a Transact-SQL step of an Agent job. Attempting to create a job like this with sp_add_job will produce the error
Msg 50000, Level 16, State 10, Procedure sp_add_jobstep_internal, Line 255
String or binary data would be truncated.
Adding the job step via SSMS yields
Alter failed for JobStep 'xxx'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Additional information:
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)
String or binary data would be truncated.
The statement has been terminated. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 8152)
I've checked sp_add_jobstep_internal, sp_add_jobstep and the sysjobsteps table and all references to the command field are nvarchar(max). We can run the same job creation code without error on a SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition machine and two SQL Server 2012 SP2 Developer Edition boxes. All our 2012 servers were fresh installs, not upgrades.

I have a procedure where an id is passed into the procedure. Â It will either be a numeric value or it will be the word "ALL." Â All that is taking place is a select statement for the specified user id. Â However, if All is passed in then I 1st need to get a list of all possible user id's and produce the results for all of the associated user ids. Â This is my syntax, but it keeps producing a compile error of:
Msg 3701, Level 11, State 5, Line 1
Cannot drop the table '#tbl_temp', because it does not exist or you do not have permission. And I placed a comment above the line that is throwing this error.

For each customer, I want to add all of their telephone numbers to a different column. That is, multiple columns (depending on the number of telephone numbers) for each customer/row. How can I achieve that?
I want my output to be
CUSTOMER ID, FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, TEL1, TEL2, TEL3, ... etc
Each 'Tel' will relate to a one or more records in the PHONES table that is linked back to the customer.
I want to do it using SELECT. Is it possible?

I have a query that performs a comparison between 2 different databases and returns the results of the comparison. It returns 2 columns. The 1st column is the value of the object being compared, and the 2nd column is a number representing any discrepancies. What I would like to do is use the results from this 1st query in the where clause of another separate query so that this 2nd query will only run for any primary values from the 1st query where a secondary value in the 1st query is not equal to zero.I was thinking of using an "IN" function in the 2nd query to pull data from the 1st column in the 1st query where the 2nd column in the 1st query != 0, but I'm having trouble ironing out the correct syntax, and conceptualizing this optimally.
While I would prefer to only return values from the 1st query where the comparison value != 0 in order to have a concise list to work with, I am having difficulty in that the comparison value is a mathematical calculation of 2 different tables in 2 different databases, and so far I've been forced to include it in the select criteria because the where clause does not accept it.Also, I am not a DBA by trade. I am a system administrator writing SQL code for reporting data from an application I support.

I have a column colC in a table myTable that has a value (e.g. '0X'). The position of a non-zero character in column colC refers to the ordinal position of another column in the table myTable (in the aforementioned example, colB).
To get a column name (i.e., colA or colB) from table myTable, I can join ("ON cte.pos = cn.ORDINAL_POSITION") to INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS for that table catalog, schema and name. But I want to show the value of what is in that column (e.g., 'ABC'), not just the name. Hoping for:
COLUMN_NAME Value
----------- -----
colB Â Â Â Â 123
colA Â Â Â Â XYZ
I've tried dynamic SQL to no success, probably not executing the concept correctly...
Below is what I have:
CREATE TABLE myTable (colA VARCHAR(3), colB VARCHAR(3), colC VARCHAR(3))
INSERT INTO myTable (colA, colB, colC) VALUES ('ABC', '123', '0X')
INSERT INTO myTable (colA, colB, colC) VALUES ('XYZ', '789', 'X0')
;WITH cte AS
(
SELECT CAST(PATINDEX('%[^0]%', colC) AS SMALLINT) pos, STUFF(colC, 1, PATINDEX('%[^0]%', colC), '') colC

I am trying to optimize a stored procedure in SQL 2008. Â When I look at an actual execution plan generated from when I run it in SSMS it shows a table being used in the plan that has no relation to what is actually in the query script and this is where the biggest performance hit occurs.
I've never seen a table show up before that wasn't part of the query. why this might occur and how to correct it? Â I can't just change the query script because the table in question isn't there.

Although I am able to connect to a SQL 2005 server (both through the SQL Management Studio and through the connection wizard in Visual Studio 2005), I am unable to parse a query if I use a connection set up as ADO.NET. When I use OLE-DB, it works properly. When I attempt to execute a SQL task (comprised of a single SELECT statement), I get "Failed to acquire connection 'servernamegoeshere'. Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection." How can this be if I'm able to parse data from this connection through other means? This happens both locally and remotely.

When using the 2005 SQL Server Management Studio Express to create a new query, most of the necesary keyboard functions do not work (Return/Enter, Backspace, Delete, etc). The only way to edit in the New Query tab is to select the undesired text and re-type it. The 'Enter' key is non-functioning so all text appears on one line.
A second issue arises when trying to execute a query. I always get an error message stating that the designated database cannot be found in the System Databases group. I have right-clicked on the database (Northwnd) I am querying to create the new query and I have also used the 'USE' statement but I still get the same error message.

I'm using a formview to display, insert and update records and it appears to be working fine except when I try to update anything. It takes the update and goes back to diaply mode but the changes aren't reflected in the data for some reason. It's like I didn't change anything at all.

I need some insight if possible. I installed a new server (to replace an aging machine) with SQL 2000. After installing SQL on the new server I tried to detach a database from the old server so that I can attach it to the new instance of SQL. My problem is that when I do the process I am stopped with an error message.
“Error 8146: procedure sp_detach_db has no parameters and arguments supplied.”
This is happening with all of the user databases on the old server.
I have tried to run this using both the Query Analyzer and from the right-click menu option and both return the same error message. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

A co-worker deleted the log file to a database that was running. At that point the database showed as suspect and stopped running. I was able to detach the database but I am unable to attach the database. I get a msg stating the logfile cannot be found would I like to create a new one. I select yes. I get the following error.
Error 1813: Could not open new database 'dbname'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. Device activation error. The physical file name 'fullpath to the original log file' may be incorrect.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I agree to it, however then I am receiving an error:Error 1813: Could not open new database 'db_name'. CREATE DATABASEaborted. Device activation error. The physical file name 'E:SQLDatabasesMSSQLDatadb_name.ldf' may be incorrect. Then after I have message than attaching database failed. In event viewer I have:17204 :FCB::Open failed: Could not open device E:SQL DatabasesMSSQLDatadb_name.MDF for virtual device number (VDN) 0.In the error log I have:2008-01-23 10:28:59.00 spid52 Starting up database 'db_name'.Do you have any ideas where the problem is?I have never had this problem before, only now.
