Transact SQL :: Update Statement With Cursor

When I run this update statement, it updates the proper badgenumbers but it only updates them to 1 when I did a count? As the data displays some of the results should be more than 1. Why did this occur?

Declare
@count int,
@Assignment varchar(100),
@fullname varchar(100),
@timeworkedtoday decimal(18,2),
@badgeNum varchar(50),
@ticket varchar(50)

Using Cursor For Update Statement?

May 9, 2012

I would like to get the results of a cursor into update statement but it fills only the last record of the cursor

this is the cursor:

Code:
DECLARE @avg varchar(50)
DECLARE @cur_avg CURSOR
SET @cur_avg = CURSOR FOR
select cast(avg(cast(reply as decimal(12,2))) as decimal(12,2)) from tbl_app_monitoring
group by test_name, application_id

this is the update statement:

Code:
OPEN @cur_avg
FETCH @cur_avg INTO @avg
WHILE (@@FETCH_STATUS = 0) BEGIN
UPDATE tbl_app_monitoring_archive
SET average = @avg
FETCH @cur_avg INTO @avg
END

is it also possible to do this without the cursor ?

Transact SQL :: Update Statement In Merge Does Not Work

Jul 29, 2015

In the following t-sql 2012 merge statement, the insert statement works but the update statement does not work. I know that is true since I looked at the results of the update statement:

Merge TST.dbo.LockCombination AS LKC1
USING
(select LKC.comboID,LKC.lockID,LKC.seq,A.lockCombo2,A.schoolnumber,LKR.lockerId
from
[LockerPopulation] A

Thus can you show me some t-sql 2012 that I can use to make update statement work in the merge function?

Transact SQL :: Case Statement In Update Clause

Jun 4, 2015

I have used the below update query. However, its updating only the first value. Like its updating AB with volume when c.Type  = ABC, similarly for CD. Its not updating based on the 2nd or the next case condition.

Update XYZ Set AB = a.Amt * (CASE WHEN c.Type = 'ABC'  THEN  (c.volume)
 WHEN c.TYPE = 'DEF'  THEN  (c.volume)
 WHEN c.Type = 'GHI'  THEN  (c.volume)
 Else 0
 END),
 CD = CASE WHEN c.Type = 'MARGIN' THEN '4105.31'
 WHEN c.Type = 'ABC' THEN '123.1'
 WHEN c.Type = 'DEF' THEN '234.2'
WHEN c.Type = 'GHI' THEN '567.1'
END
 from table1 a join table2 b
 on a.Cust = b.Customer
 join table3 c
 on b.account = c.account and b.channel =c.channel

Why its not working properly? But if i use Select statement instead of update query its working properly.

Transact SQL :: Update Statement Truncates Varchar Value

Oct 8, 2015

In t-sql 2012, data is obtained from [Inputtb].lockCombo1 where it is defined as varchar(8). The data is copied to test.dbo.LockCombination.combo where the field is defined as varchar(8). This copies all the data except the last right column.

Basically a value that is '12-34-56' intially from [Inputtb].lockCombo1 ends on in st.dbo.LockCombination.combo looking like

'12-34-5'. In this case the last value of '6' is missing. I have tried to use various string functions to obtain the entire value that should be  '12-34-56'  and ends up looking like '12-34-5'.

Here are 2 sqls that I have used and I get the same results:

1.
UPDATE LKC
SET LKC.combo = lockCombo1
FROM [Inputtb] A
JOIN test.dbo.School SCH ON A.schoolnumber = SCH.type and A.schoolnumber =
@SchoolNumber
JOIN test.dbo.Locker LKR ON SCH.schoolID = LKR.schoolID AND A.lockerNumber =

[Code] ....

I can not change the definition of the columns since these are production settings.

Thus can you  should me modified sql that will end up with the entire value of 8 characters in the [Inputtb].lockCombo1 column?

Transact SQL :: STATIC Defines A Cursor That Makes Temporary Copy Of Data To Be Used By Cursor

Aug 12, 2015

In MSDN file I read about static cursor

STATIC
Defines a cursor that makes a temporary copy of the data to be used by the cursor. All requests to the cursor are answered from this temporary table in
tempdb; therefore, modifications made to base tables are not reflected in the data returned by fetches made to this cursor, and this cursor does not allow modifications

It say's that modifications is not allowed in the static cursor. I have a  questions regarding that

Static Cursor
declare ll cursor global static
            for select  name, salary from ag
  open ll
             fetch from ll

              while @@FETCH_STATUS=0
               fetch from ll
                update ag set salary=200 where 1=1

   close ll
deallocate ll

In "AG" table, "SALARY" was 100 for all the entries. When I run the Cursor, it showed the salary value as "100" correctly.After the cursor was closed, I run the query select * from AG.But the result had updated to salary 200 as given in the cursor. file says  modifications is not allowed in the static cursor.But I am able to update the data using static cursor.

Transact SQL :: UPDATE Statement Failing On Unique Key Constraint

Jul 9, 2015

I'm trying to update rows in a simple table that has a UNIQUE KEY CONSTRAINT defined on one of its columns. Here is the DDL for the table:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[SEC_USER](
 [SEC_USER_ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
 [USER_CODE] [varchar](100) NOT NULL,
 [USER_NAME] [varchar](128) NOT NULL,
 [EMP_CODE] [varchar](6) NOT NULL,

[Code] ....

When trying to execute the UPDATE statement the query fails with a constraint violation error:

Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'UQ__SEC_USER__A039F1EE62FE8444'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.SEC_USER'. The duplicate key value is (34337).

What has  me baffled is that I'm not doing any insert. Also, the value that it's referencing - 34337 - doesn't exist in the table at all. I'd rather not drop the constraint.

My current proc updates(updates using joins of two or three tables) millions of records as per the condition provided for each department.

However, when the proc fails it writes to a ErrorTable, ERROR_MESSAGE(), ERROR_SEVERITY() and which department has failed.

Since the records are updated keeping the selected departments in loop, I get the department in a temp variable.Now, I was asked to log the specific record where the failure was occured.Something like log the identity column value or primary key value which record has failed.

Transact SQL :: UPDATE Statement - Returns Correct Results When Running Separately

Problem:  The following code returns correct results when moving variable declarations and update statement outside a stored procedure, but fails to return a value other than zero for the "COMPANY TOTAL" records.  The "DEPT TOTAL" result works fine both in and outside the sp.This may have to do with handling NULL values since I was getting warning message earlier involving a value being eliminated by an aggregate function involving a NULL.  I only got this message when running inside the sp, not when running standalone.  I wrapped the values inside the SUM functions with an ISNULL, and now return a zero rather than NULL for the "COMPANY TOTAL" records when running inside SP.All variable values are correct when running.

Transact SQL :: Alternative For Cursor

Oct 28, 2015

I have a Stored Procedure. In that SP, I am calling 10 table-valued user defined function to calculate different pricing charges (lets say delivery charge, fuel surcharge, etc). In that SP, there is one Temporary table to store the data required for calculating charges and some columns will hold the calculated data in the same temp table.

1. First step is loading the columns in Temporary table in the SP which are required for calculating charges (will be having 1000 records for example)
2. Second step is to calculate charges ( delivery charge, fuel surcharge, etc). for each rows(1000 rows) from the temporary table using table-valued user defined functions one by one*Call function to calculate DeliveryCharge in the SP and calculate DeliveryCharge for all 1000rows. For this step i am using cursor to loop through 1000records and find DeliveryCharge for each row and update it in the DeliveryCharge column in the same temporary table. I am using 10 cursors for 10 different price calculations in the SP
3. Finally, the SP will return that 1000 records with calculated prices. The question is how to avoid Cursor for these operations. How to pass all 1000 records to a function and get table valued results from that function and update those results in the Temporary table without using cursors?

Need Help With A SQL Statement - Trying Not To Use A Cursor

May 25, 2007

I'm just know basic SQL but not enough to write any complex queries.The problem I'm facing right now keeps me thinking to use a Cursor butI've seen a lot of posts on here saying Cursors are bad so I'm hopingthere is a complex query that can give me the data I need.I have about 6 pages in website where I need to display a datagrid ofinformation. There should be 5 columns, Filename, and then 4 CategoryTitles (These category titles are stored in a table calledPageCategory). I have another table, XREF_Doc_Page that stores thePageID, DocID (ID to know what file it is), and PageCategoryID. So Ican query this table with a pageID to see all the results that shouldbe on this page but I don't know how to format it the way I need mydatagrid?In order to have the records from PageCategory be columns, is this acrosstab query or something?My only thoughts right now are to user a cursor to query Pagecategoryand build a temp table somehow with these as the columns?? (Not surehow'd that would work yet).So the datagrid would have the 5 columns like I said and then justlist all files associated with this page and put a checkmark underwhichever category it was assigned to (example below...)Files PageCat1 PageCat2PageCat3 PageCat4abc.pdf Xxyz.pdf Xjkl.pdfx

Transact SQL :: Standard And Correct Cursor Format

Aug 12, 2015

I have a table which is a configuration table, I have declared cursors whereby the cursor doesn't get to all the rows in the configuration table even though there is no where clause in the select statement and the cursor ought to loop/go through every single row. Changed the cursor to the below and it started to go through all rows.

DECLARE XXX CURSOR LOCAL FORWARD_ONLY STATIC READ_ONLY TYPE_WARNING FOR

Now with the definition above, I am now having a situation whereby a column in row 1 which is a bit data type and has a value of 0, then the cursor gets to row 2 the same column but with a value of 1 and an if statement in the cursor saying

IF @row2columnX = 0 set @myval = 99

For some reason within the cursor the IF statement is being implemented even though the value in row2 columnX is = 1

I find it so weird. Is there a database property that affects the way cursors react or is there something that I am doing incorrectly ? Lastly, I would like to have a simple cursor template which simply goes through a configuration table or any table.

Using Select Statement Instead Of Cursor

ssn sex dob rel_code
111111111 m 19500403 01
111111111 f 19570908 02

111111111 m 19870907 30
111111111 m 19901211 31

Member's rel_code = 01
spouse's rel_code = 02
daughter's rel_code starts from 20 with the oldest and increments by 1.
Son's rel_code starts from 30 and increments by 1 from oldest to the youngest.

I know You can write a Sp with cursor and do this, but I would like to know if you can accomplish the same thing by a select or case or something else instead of a cursor.

Thanks in advance.

Cursor And USE Statement With Variables

Sep 18, 2013

I have a cursor that goes through a table with the names of all the database in my server. So for each fetch, the cursor gets the name of a database and assign it to a variable, @databaseName, and try to do some queries from that database by using the command "USE @databaseName". But "USE" doesn't take the variable @databaseName; it is expecting a database name (i.e. USE master).

Here is my code:

Declare @databaseName varchar(50)
Declare c_getDatabaseName CURSOR for SELECT name from tblDatabases
OPEN c_getDatabaseName
FETCH NEXT from c_getDatabaseName into @databaseName
While @@FETCH_STATUS = 0

How to get USE to take the variable value ?

Help With Cursor And Fetch Statement

Mar 17, 2008

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me with using the cursor and fetch functions. I have not used these features in the past and I am now stuck when trying to use IF statements with the fetch function.

I have a temp table populated with the below headers and their associated data.

The headers are as follows:
ItemRcvdKey, TranID, TranDate, QtyReceived, UnitCost, ItemKey, WhseKey, ItemID, ShortDesc, WhseID, QtyOnHand, StdCost.

The information contained in this temp table lists every single receipt of goods against all of our inventoried items. The QtyOnHand listed on each record is the total QtyOnHand for that item in that warehouse. What I need the fetch to do is grab the receipt of goods records, starting with the most recent TranDate, and pull them into the new temp table until the QtyOnHand is reached. The QtyonHand it should be comparing too is the one listed on the first fetched record. Once the Sum of the QtyRcvd is equal to or is greater than the QtyOnHand for that item I need the fetch to move on to the next item number and perform the same function.

One thing I need to be clear on is that if there are 3 Receipt Records(TranID) for Item A in Warehouse A, the total QtyOnHand will be listed 3 times. I need to make sure that the Fetch is comparing all the records for Item A in Warehouse A to one instance of the QtyOnHand.

The other aspect is that there will be receipt of goods for the same item in multiple warehouses. So I also need the Fetch to be sure that when it is grabbing records and putting them in the temp table, it makes sure it is matching the ItemID and the WhseID with the record it started with.

The current script I have written is below. If you can offer any help I would greatly appreciate it.

Code SnippetDeclare @ItemID VarChar(30),
@QtyOnHand Decimal (16,8),
@WhseID VarChar (6),
@SumRcvd Int,
@TranID VarChar(30),
@TranDate DateTime,
@QtyRcvd Decimal (16,8),
@UnitCost Decimal (16,8),
@ItemKey Int,
@WhseKey Int,
@ShortDesc VarChar (40),
@StdCost Decimal (16,8)

DECLARE Temp_cursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT TranID, TranDate, QtyRcvd,
UnitCost, ItemKey, WHseKey,
ItemID, ShortDesc, WhseID,
QtyOnHand, StdCost
FROM #Temp1 tem

OPEN Temp_cursor

FETCH NEXT FROM Temp_cursor
INTO @TranID, @TranDate, @QtyRcvd,
@UnitCost, @ItemKey, @WHseKey,
@ItemID, @ShortDesc, @WhseID,
