Transact SQL :: Updates Are Not Updating Database
Jun 12, 2015
No error is thrown, but the update is not made? Possibly due to the dreaded inline sql being used? The data structure for these 2 servers is horrific (but that is a story in itself). The current structure (which needs immediate change) is each employee all 10 of them, have their own database. If the userid is 6 or higher they are on server2 if the userid is 5 or below they are on server1. Then they each have their own table that stores the data. (A story for another day, but def needs overhaul). However, here is the sql -- what needs to be altered to work with the current data structure and still get the updates needed? Or we can scratch the update statements entirely if we can get the correct counts needed.
Declare
@employeeID varchar(50)
,@managerID varchar(50)
,@sql varchar(Max)
,@employee varchar(max)
,@itemsold varchar(max)
[Code] ....

I seem to having a really hard time when making schema changes. Adding a new fact table, renaming a dimension column, adding a new measure or renaming an existing one. Somehow these things tend to cause problems at one or more stages - either running the schema wizard or processing the cube.So I ask, what is your overall strategy for adding or updating new schema updates into your DB with regards to the SSAS project?
Another way to ask this - is how often do you find yourself deleting the the DSV and / or the whole cube and starting over because some schema change lead to a cascade of issues that just didnt seem to want to let you correct them?

How to do some procedural updates based on a record string. What I wish to do.
If the value (of type string) in my column contains the ‘/’ character I wish to ‘do something’
If the value (of my string) in my column contains the ‘-‘ character I wish to ‘do something else’.
Assume my column contains both ‘/’ and ‘-‘ in the same table.column, but not within the same record.
The data in question is in
tbl_Quotes.tLastDateValue
I’ve found I can use something like this to search my string.
SELECT
Count(CHARINDEX('/',tbl_Quotes.tLastDateValue))
FROM tbl_Quotes
WHERE
CHARINDEX('/',tbl_Quotes.tLastDateValue)>0
And similar for ‘-‘ records.
I’m thinking something like this could be used as the test.
How do I put this into play, I’m thinking of an IF or CASE but not sure how to best test and which program flow to use in SQL.

SID statusid listindex listsize sent
1 12 25 25 1
2 12 25 50 0
3 12 75 150 1
4 14 25 25 1
I have a table like above where cid is unique but status is not for all the status id i need put 1 as they sent out .but till now i used max listindex because they used to send files sequentially but now list index is random so how to update sent to 1 for all the status ids.

I would like to use the following code for querying summary records with paging.
DECLARE @PageNumber AS INT, @RowspPage AS INT
SET @PageNumber = 1
SET @RowspPage = 10
SELECT * FROM (
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY create_date) AS NUMBER,
* FROM summary
) AS TBL
WHERE NUMBER BETWEEN ((@PageNumber - 1) * @RowspPage + 1) AND (@PageNumber * @RowspPage)
ORDER BY create_date
Paging is implemented for fast response since the data pool is very large up to 10000000.
The above query works fine in testing. However, in reality, since new records are keep inserting to the tables, I have concern about the accuracy of viewing another page of result.
E.g. At 12:00pm, the result of page 1 (5 per page) is
R20, R19, R18, R17, R16
After 2 mins, 12:02pm, the user press next page button
Since records R21, R22, R23, R24, R25, R26 are inserted
page 2 result would be R21, R20, R19, R18, R17
So the result is showing many records same as page 1 which has already been seen. Could this situation be improved?

I am trying to update a large table which consists of 45 million records , it is taking more than 2 days to the update , below is my approach
1. The table has only one clustered index and no other indexes on the table.
2. I am updating in batches say 20000 record-wise.
3. Changed the recovery mode to bulk logged and auto-growth size is set to 300MB and there is enough space in my disk for transaction log .
But still the query is running slowly.

I'm a little bit unsure...
declare @t table
(col1 varchar(10),
col2 varchar(10),
col3 varchar(10),
col4 varchar(10) )
insert into @t values ('A123', 'Test', '','')
insert into @t values ('', 'Test 1', 'Y','N')
[Code] ...
Which comes out as
col1 col2 col3 col4
(No column name)
A123 Test
1
Test 1
Y N 0
Y N
0
A125 Test
1
Test 9
Y N 0
N Y
0
but what I would like is col 1 populated As A123 until it hits A125 then populated A125 etc. I was thinking about using the iff but not getting anywhere fast.

After parsing unformatted XML file, we are loading XML in formatted for into a SQL table rows, so that SSIS can read it and load it to DW tables.
We have a flag column in the above table, which gets updated after each row is extracted successfully by the Procedure(cursor inside Proc) used in SSIS, but cursor inside Procedure is taking 16 hours to load 100k xml source files, if we remove cursor and use bulk load then it takes only 1.5 Hrs. but with bulk load we cannot update the flags.

This question is extension from the topic Updating table Rows with overlapping dates: [URL] .....
I am actually having a table as following:
Table Name: PromotionList
Note that the NULL in endDate means no end date or infinite end date.
ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag
1 1 2015-04-05 2015-05-28 0
2 1 2015-04-23 NULL 0
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 0
4 1 2015-04-23 2015-05-29 0
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 0
And I would like to produce the following outcome to the same table (using update statement): As what you all observe, it merge all overlapping dates based on same promotion ID by taking the minimum start date and maximum end date. Only the first row of overlapping date is updated to the desired value and the flag value change to 1. For other overlapping value, it will be set to NULL and the flag becomes 2.
Flag = 1, success merge row. Flag = 2, fail row
ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag
1 1 2015-04-05 NULL 1
2 1 NULL NULL 2
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 1
4 1 NULL NULL 2
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 1
The second part that I would like to acheive is based on the first table as well. However, this time I would like to merge the date which results in the minimum start date and End Date of the last overlapping rows. Since the End date of the last overlapping rows of promotion ID 1 is row with ID 4 with End Date 2015-05-29, the table will result as follow after update.
ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag
1 1 2015-04-05 2015-05-29 1
2 1 NULL NULL 2
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 1
4 1 NULL NULL 2
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 1
Note that above is just sample Data. Actual data might contain thousands of records and hopefully it can be done in single update statement.
Extending from the above question, now two extra columns has been added to the table, which is ShouldDelete and PromotionCategoryID respectively.
Original table:
ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag ShouldDelete PromotionCategoryID
1 1 2015-04-05 2015-05-28 0 Y 1
2 1 2015-04-23 2015-05-29 0 NULL NULL
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 0 N NULL
4 1 2015-04-23 NULL 0 Y 1
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 0 NULL NULL
Should Delete can take Y, N and NULL
PromotionCategoryID can take any integer and NULL
Now it should be partition according with promotionid, shoulddelete and promotioncategoryID (these 3 should be same).
By taking the min date and max date of the same group, the following table should be achieve after the table is updated.
Final outcome:
ID PromotionID StartDate EndDate Flag ShouldDelete PromotionCategoryID
1 1 2015-04-05 NULL 1 Y 1
2 1 2015-04-23 2015-05-29 1 NULL NULL
3 2 2015-03-03 2015-05-04 1 N NULL
4 1 NULL NULL 2 Y 1
5 1 2015-01-01 2015-02-02 1 NULL NULL

I wanted to confirm that when using Database Mirroring that DDL Updates such as table and stored procedure updates on the principle server are replicated to the mirror server.
I thought I read that non-logged operations would not be replicated to the mirror server. What would be some examples of that. At the moment...you would think every entry in the the database would be saved into a table and that would be replicated.

MS-SQL 2005, C# 2.0
I will have many client databases that will be updated. When they are updated I need to transfer some of that data to a central Server database somewhere on the Internet. Note, schemas do not necessarily match.
Transfering the data (Web Services, Remoting) is not a problem.
What I am looking for is a cool, correct, advisable way, for the client database to notify me of an Insert, Update or Delete. I can then initiate the connection to the Server and 'push' the data (maybe pull some back from the Server too).
Obviously Triggers may be a place to start... But I need to know 'external to the database' that an update has happened or can I send the data from within the SQL Server assembly?
Anyone have any ideas or a technique, maybe something new in SQL Server 2005 (all databases will be 2005), for acheiving this? Just so I don't go down the 'wrong' path...
There are some BLOB's involved (1-2 page PDF's), if that makes a difference.
I envisage that the process transfering the data will be a Windows Service running on each client. The connection may not always be available, so some kind of 'to do' list of outstanding data to be transfered is required.
I'm just starting on this, so any pointers would be great, I'm sure it's all been done before ;)
Thanks
Rob.

I'm trying to work out a database design to make it quicker for my clientprogram to read and display updates to the data set. Currently it reads inthe entire data set again after each change, which was acceptable when thedata set was small but now it's large enough to start causing noticabledelays. I've come up with a possible solution but am looking for others'input on its suitability to the problem. Here is the DDL for one of the tables:create table epl_packages(customer varchar(8) not null, -- package_type char not null, -- primary keypackage_no int not null, -- /dimensions varchar(50) not null default(0),weight_kg int not null,despatch_id int, -- filled in on despatchloaded bit not null default(0),item_count int not null default(0))alter table epl_packagesadd constraint pk_epl_packagesprimary key (customer, package_type, package_no)My first thought was to add a datetime column to each table to record thetime of the last change, but that would only work for inserts and updates. So I figured that a separate table for deletions would make this complete.DDL would be something like:create table epl_packages(customer varchar(8) not null,package_type char not null,package_no int not null, dimensions varchar(50) not null default(0),weight_kg int not null,despatch_id int, loaded bit not null default(0),item_count int not null default(0),last_update_time datetime default(getdate()) -- new column)alter table epl_packagesadd constraint pk_epl_packagesprimary key (customer, package_type, package_no)create table epl_packages_deletions(delete_time datetime, customer varchar(8) not null,package_type char not null,package_no int not null)And then these triggers on update and delete (insert is handled automaticallyby the default constraint on last_update_time):create trigger tr_upd_epl_packageson epl_packagesfor updateas-- check for primary key changeif (columns_updated() & 1792) > 0 -- first three columns: 256+512+1024insert epl_packages_deletionsselectgetdate(),customer,package_type,package_nofrom deletedupdate Aset last_update_time = getdate()from epl_packages Ajoin inserted Bon A.customer = B.customer andA.package_type = B.package_type andA.package_no = B.package_nogocreate trigger tr_del_epl_packageson epl_packagesfor deleteasinsert epl_packages_deletionsselectgetdate(),customer,package_type,package_nofrom deletedgoThe client program would then do the initial read as follows:select getdate()selectcustomer,package_type,package_no,dimensions,weight_kg,despatch_id,loaded,item_countfrom epl_packageswherecustomer = {current customer}order bycustomer,package_type,package_noIt would store the output of getdate() to be used in subsequent updates, which would be read from the server as follows:select getdate()selectcustomer,package_type,package_no,dimensions,weight_kg,despatch_id,loaded,item_countfrom epl_packageswherecustomer = {current customer} andlast_update_time > {output of getdate() from previous read}order bycustomer,package_type,package_noselectcustomer,package_type,package_nofrom epl_packages_deletionswherecustomer = {current customer} anddelete_time > {output of getdate() from previous read}The client program will then apply the deletions and the updated/insertedrows, in that order. This would be done for each table displayed in theclient.Any critical comments on this approach and any improvements that couldbe made would be much appreciated!

Hi all,
This managed application was written to run on a Symbol 3090 Win CE 5.0 scanning device. We are using the symbol provided classes to access the scanning interface, and SQL Compact database on the device to collect the scanned data, and then using merge replication to synchronize scanned data when the device is docked. The problem we have experienced seems to be releated to the performance when inserting and updating records in the database.
We have tested some randomly generated 1000 records and inserting/updatating into a database. At first the time to commit a record increases when the database is flushing into the memory (The flush interval in the connection string property is 10 seconds by default). and then as the database size grows increasing the time to commit every single record which is causing the application to perform slowly as they scan items into the database. However, the device program memory remains consistant as they are scan items. From our tests, I found the time to execute either a update/insert command on 2MB sqlMobile database (upto 10000 records, depending on the size of the columns) is taking nearly 2 to 2 and half seconds to complete. Below is the only code I am executing,
If Not sqlObj.UpdateItem(1061022, itemNo, 1) Then
sqlObj.InsertResultSet(1061022, itemNo, itemObj.Style, itemObj.Color, itemObj.Size, itemObj.Description, 0, 1)
End If
For the notes, I am using prepared updated command and resultset.insert methods to perform update and insert commands into the database.
Any help on this issue is highly appreciated.
Thanks
Ravi.

I am not sure if the 'Copy Website' function in Visual Studio 2005 will update the database structure and data or will simply overwrite it.
Does anybody know the answer? If it overwrites it, would you please point me to information on how can I update the database structure and data without ruining it?

I have a project that consists of a SQL db with an Access front end as the user interface. Here is the structure of the table on which this question is based:
Code Block
create table #IncomeAndExpenseData (
recordID nvarchar(5)NOT NULL,
itemID int NOT NULL,
itemvalue decimal(18, 2) NULL,
monthitemvalue decimal(18, 2) NULL
)
The itemvalue field is where the user enters his/her numbers via Access. There is an IncomeAndExpenseCodes table as well which holds item information, including the itemID and entry unit of measure. Some itemIDs have an entry unit of measure of $/mo, while others are entered in terms of $/yr, others in %/yr.
For itemvalues of itemIDs with entry units of measure that are not $/mo a stored procedure performs calculations which converts them into numbers that has a unit of measure of $/mo and updates IncomeAndExpenseData putting these numbers in the monthitemvalue field. This stored procedure is written to only calculate values for monthitemvalue fields which are null in order to avoid recalculating every single row in the table.
If the user edits the itemvalue field there is a trigger on IncomeAndExpenseData which sets the monthitemvalue to null so the stored procedure recalculates the monthitemvalue for the changed rows. However, it appears this trigger is also setting monthitemvalue to null after the stored procedure updates the IncomeAndExpenseData table with the recalculated monthitemvalues, thus wiping out the answers.
How do I write a trigger that sets the monthitemvalue to null only when the user edits the itemvalue field, not when the stored procedure puts the recalculated monthitemvalue into the IncomeAndExpenseData table?

I have my first small SQl Server 2005 database developed on my localserver and I have also its equivalent as an online database.I wish to update the local database (using and asp.net interface) andthen to upload the data (at least the amended data, but given thesmall size all data should be no trouble) to the online database.I think replication is the straight answer but I have no experience ofthis and I am wondering what else I might use which might be lesscomplicated. One solution is DTS (using SQL 2000 terms) but i am notsure if I can set this up (1) to overwrite existing tables and (2) notto seemingly remove identity attributes from fields set as identities.I know there are other possibilities but I would be glad of advice asto the likely best method for a small database updated perhaps onceweekly or at less frequent intervals,Best wishes, John Morgan

Hi,
How do I insert data that I have collected in a local database onto a table on my online ie hosted database which is on a different server?
At the moment I am just uploading all the data to the hosted DB but this is wasting bandwith as only a small percentage of data is actually selected and used.
I thought that if i used a local DB and then update the table on my hosted DB this would be much more efficient, but I am not sure how to write the SQL code to do this!
Do I do some kind of
INSERT INTO sample_table
SELECT xxx

Or is it more complicated than this?

I got thrown into a new project that is going to require me to update an SQL server database tables from an Access table on the backend of an Oracle database on another server. At the end of each day the Access dabase will be updated from the Oracle database.
What I need to do, is when the Access database is updated I need to have the table in the SQL database automaticaly updated. When a new record is added to the Access table I need the new record added to the SQL table. When a record is deleted in the Access table I need to keep that record in the SQL table and set a field to a value (such as 0). And when a record is updated in Access, have it updated in SQL.
Needless to say this is a bit out of my area and not sure how to accomplish this.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

i have sql 2005 installed on my personal machine, but our server has sql 2000 on it. the structure of my database was made on the server, but i'm not sure how to update the server copy from my local copy. when i try to export my data from my local machine to the server (or import from my local machine to the server), i get pre-execute errors.
roughly every other week, i'll need to be able to update the server version from my local version, so i'm trying to find the most efficient method. what is the best way to update a 2000 database from a 2005 database? it doesn't matter if i append or overwrite, but i do use identity fields. the error i get when trying to use the import/export wizard is:
- Pre-execute (Error)

password given by the user ....Imports System.Data.SqlClient Dim con As New SqlConnection("server=sys2;initial catalog=kris;integrated security=SSPI") Dim cmd As New SqlCommand("select * from u_login", con) Dim dr As SqlDataReader Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load End Sub Private Sub btnUpdate_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSubmit.Click con.Open() dr = cmd.ExecuteReader While dr.Read() If dr(0) = txtEmail.Text And dr(1) = txtoldpwd.Text Then Dim NewPwdStr As String = txtnewpwd.Text Dim OldPwdStr As String = txtoldpwd.Text Dim sqlstr As String = "Update U_Login set pwd = ('" & NewPwdStr & "') Where pwd = '" & OldPwdStr & "'" Dim cmd1 As New SqlCommand("sqlstr", con) cmd1.ExecuteNonQuery() Response.Write(" Password Changed ...
