Transact SQL :: Using CAST (column AS BIGINT) And ISNUMERIC
Aug 27, 2015
I found this to work:
SELECT uri, evFieldUri, evFieldVal
, CAST(evFieldVal
AS BIGINT)
FROM TSEXFIELDV
[Code] ....
It Returns:
uri
evFieldUri
evFieldVal
(No column name)
224016 3267
+000089243829 89243829
224019 2717
+000089243825 89243825
224472 3333
+000000000000000000000017 17
225052 3267
+000089243829 89243829
225055 2717
+000089243825 89243825
So, then I went back to:
SELECT uri, evFieldUri, evFieldVal
, CAST(evFieldVal
AS BIGINT)
FROM TSEXFIELDV
[Code] ....
And it returns this error:
Msg 8114, Level 16, State 5, Line 1
Error converting data type varchar to bigint.
So, I tried again, and this worked…
SELECT uri, evFieldUri, evFieldVal,CAST(evFieldVal
AS BIGINT),
ISNUMERIC(evFieldVal)
FROM TSEXFIELDV WHERE URI
> 0 AND evFieldUri
IN ( SELECT URI
FROM TSEXFIELD WHERE exFieldFormat
IN (1,11))
I logged out and came back and tried again, and it still worked. So then I tried…
SELECT uri, evFieldUri, evFieldVal,CAST(evFieldVal
AS BIGINT)
FROM TSEXFIELDV
WHERE URI
> 0
[Code] ...
And it fails.

Following SQL statement attempts to convert a bigint to date
SELECT CAST (DATEADD(SECOND, SEM_AGENT.LAST_UPDATE_TIME /1000 + 8*60*60, '19700101') AS VARCHAR(50)) as Last_Checkin ........
But no matter what I try, the output is
May 27 2015 1:18AM
and I wish the output to be
May 27 2015
I also tried
SELECT CAST (DATEADD(SECOND, SEM_AGENT.LAST_UPDATE_TIME /1000 + 8*60*60, 'Jan 1, 1970') AS VARCHAR(50)) as Last_Checkin ....
but same result

This is a common error for SQL Server, but I got it in a uncommon way.I have a table called - tblIDNumber where there are two columns - IDN_Number [NVarchar(200)] and Temp [BigInt]
If I run,
SELECT *
FROM dbo.tblIDNumber
WHERE IDN_IDNumberTypeStaticValue = 33
AND IDN_Removed = 0
AND CAST(IDN_Number AS BIGINT) = 1
SQL Server give me the error:
Msg 8114, Level 16, State 5, Line 1
Error converting data type nvarchar to bigint.
I first thought IDN_Number in type 33 has characters, but it doesn't, becasue the below query works!!!
UPDATE dbo.tblIDNumber
SET Temp = CAST(IDN_Number AS BIGINT)
WHERE IDN_IDNumberTypeStaticValue = 33
AND IDN_Removed = 0
To workaround, I ran the query,
UPDATE dbo.tblIDNumber
SET IDN_Number = '123'
WHERE IDN_IDNumberTypeStaticValue = 33
AND IDN_Removed = 0
and then I ran the first query, and SQL Server does NOT give me the same error - Msg 8114, Level 16, State 5, Line 1 Error converting data type nvarchar to bigint.
Second query approved there is nothing wrong from converting the value in IDN_Number to a BigInt, but the third query gave the hint that data might be the cause?????
finally, I found the root cause to be an index that the first query uses :
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_tblIDNumber_Covering] ON [dbo].[tblIDNumber]
(
[IDN_Removed] ASC,
[IDNumberCode] ASC
)
INCLUDE ( [IDN_Number],
[IDN_Reference]) WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, DROP_EXISTING = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON, FILLFACTOR = 85) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
If I remove the index, the first query works without the error.

Hi,
I have dates in "mmddyy" format coming from the sources and they are older dates of mid 80s like 082580 for instance.
When I cast it this way (DT_DBTIMESTAMP) Source_Date , It says ok but throws a runtime error.
When I hardcode a date in same format, (DT_DBTIMESTAMP) "082580" , It becomes red (an indication of syntax error) . Please note that we use double quotes in expressions in Derived Column Transformation; So an anticipation that using double quotes over single ones would be the syntax problem would be wrong.
Any help in this will sincerely be appreciated.
Thanks

I recently converted a column that was once an int to an bigint on one of my tables. The modified column provided a generic row id information and there are duplicates within this column. I am trying to perform a self join via the following:
SELECT a.row_id FROM test_db a INNER JOIN test_db b ON b.row_id < a.row_id.
This code use to work when the column was an int but now I am getting high CPU issues since I converted to bigint. I am unsure on why the change to bigint will cause such an issue. The OS/SQL is 64BIT.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Casting 0 to SMALLDATETIME or DATETIME is allowed in T-SQL which produces to 1900-01-01. However, you can't cast 0 to DATE or DATETIME2. Why is that?

I am doing some analysis on shifts and what I want to do is say if the time from a timestamp field is between 00:00 and 05:59 then the figures belong to the day before. Eg. We have a night shift that work 22:00 - 06:00.
Here is my coding which logically looks sound to me but when I run it, it has an error:

CAST(e.TimestampasTime)asEventTime,

ELSECAST(e.TimestampasDate)

I am having issues trying to write a query that would provide me the unique GUID numbers associated with a distinct PID if the unique GUID's > 1. To summarize, I need a query that just shows which PID's have more than one unique GUID. A PID could have multiple GUID's that are the same, I'm looking for the PID's that have multiple GUID's that are different/unique.
Table1
GUID PID
GUID1 PID1
GUID1 PID1
GUID1 PID1
GUID2 PID1
GUID3 PID2
GUID3 PID2
GUID3 PID2
The result of the query would only have PID1 because it has two unique GUID's. PID2 would not be listed has it has the same GUID3 in each row.
Result:
PID1

hi,
i am migrating data from a legacy system with a not nice front-end.
as a result, i have all sorts of garbage stored on the tables.
i
am trying to convert values from varchar(12) to float, but i have an
error during selecting data that says that data can not be converted
eventhough i am using the ISNUMERIC() function to check.
case when
isNumeric( myCol01 ) = 0 then null
else
convert( float , myCol01 )
end
but my error occours when ISNUMERIC() encounters the value '. ' ; that is a dot with spaces after it.
try the expression below;
SELECT
myValue = '. '
, is_numeric = ISNUMERIC('. ')
, converted = CONVERT( FLOAT , '. ')
has anyone got any idea how to work around this?

Hi,
I have a table described as follows:
TableA
GrpDate DateTime;
grpMiscError varchar(1);
Ex Data:
2/1/2008 1
2/1/2008 1
2/1/2008 0
2/1/2008 x
2/1/2008 0
The grpMiscError can contain 0, 1 or x only. I need to sum up this column for all the zeros by a particular date.
I have the following but doesn't work:
SELECT
SUM(CASE ISNUMERIC(grpMiscError) WHEN 0 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)AS MiscError
FROM TableA
WHERE GrpDate = '2/1/2008'
I get back an answer of 1 MiscError instead of 2
What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks,
J

Hi all,
I have never seen this problem in SQL Server 7. The isnumeric() returns true for non-numeric data, as show in the following example:
declare @x as varchar(5)
select @x = '00d01'
select isnumeric(@x)
I would expect the isnumeric() function to return false. Can anyone give a reason why this should occur.
Does SQL Server think that this is a hex value and is performing an implicit conversion? If so how horrible...
