Transaction Log Maintenance

Sep 29, 2007

I've just install SQL Server 2005 and successfully navigated my way through using the Maintenance Plan to backup my databases but can't figure out how to keep my transaction logs from getting huge. Is this controlled by a Maintenace Plan and, if so, what is the preferred setup?

Maintenance Job Generates A Huge Transaction Log

Oct 12, 2001

Recently I did an upgrade form SQL 7 to SQL 2000. Everything went smoothly
except there is a little problem with an Optimization job (reorganize data and index pages/remove unused space from database files). The job itself runs
fine. But when I do a transaction log backup, it generates a huge log backup file. I don't remember that there was such a huge-sized transaction log backup file when I ran it on SQL 70. Is SQL 2000 different from SQL 7 on this aspect?

DB Maintenance - Backup Transaction Log Fails

Jul 23, 2007

Hi,

I'm running SQL 2005 SP2 and having a problem with a Database Maintenance task created in SSMS doing transaction log backups of all user databases.

When I look at dbo.sysmaintplan_logdetail I see the message:

Database 'Database1' will not be backed up because it does not have its recovery model set to Full or BulkLogged.

Great - that's what we want! Skip the SIMPLE recovery mode databases. However, the next entry is the following error message:

Executing the query "BACKUP LOG [Database1] TO DISK = N'D:\MSSQL$Windows\MSSQL.2\MSSQL\Backup\Database1\Database1_backup_200707231600.trn' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'Database1_backup_20070723160023', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 " failed with the following error: "The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE. BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

Which says to me it is trying to backup the same database(s) it just said it was skipping!

What's going on? I see that there is a fix to a similar error message with the cumulative update KB936305 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936305) for maintenance cleanup tasks.

Does anybody else have such a problem?

Transaction Log Growth During Maintenance Plans

Oct 5, 2006

During my maintenance plans every night, my transaction log for a 17GB database grows to about 9.5GB. I am running transaction log backups every 2 hours, and my transaction log stays around 300MB during the day. However, every night when the optimization job runs, this explosive growth occurs. I have the optimizations set to Reorganize data and index pages, changing free space to 10%, and remove unused space from database files to 10%, shrinking when they grow beyond 50MB. This database handles cash register operations which are not active during the maintenance plan.

Maintenance Plans Not Deleting Old Transaction Log Backups

Jan 31, 2007

I'm the dba for a large company and have setup many maintenance plans for our sql servers. One of the options I have set is to delete old backups of databases and transaction logs after 2 days. For some reason, the old database backups are being deleted, but the old transaction logs backups are not. I have them being put in the same directory. Anybody have any ideas why this is happening and what if any fix is available?

Transaction Log Does Not Truncate And Shrink Using A SQL Server 2005 Maintenance Plan

May 15, 2006

We are using SQL Server 2005 (SP1). I have created a maintenance plan that backs up up the datebase every night. The problem is that the transaction log is continuing to grow. I have been told that a full backup will automatically truncate and shrink the transaction log. However, this is not happening. How can I truncate and shrink the transaction log after a full backup as part of our maintenance plan. Thank you.

Maintenance Plan Wizard Vs Tsql Maintenance

Aug 17, 2007

Hello,

I have a question that I hope someone can clear up for me. I have come across a number of different suggestions on DB maintenance, for example reindexing with the following script:

USE DatabaseName --Enter the name of the database you want to reindex

DECLARE @TableName varchar(255)

DECLARE TableCursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT table_name FROM information_schema.tables
WHERE table_type = 'base table'

OPEN TableCursor

FETCH NEXT FROM TableCursor INTO @TableName
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
DBCC DBREINDEX(@TableName,' ',90)
FETCH NEXT FROM TableCursor INTO @TableName
END

CLOSE TableCursor

DEALLOCATE TableCursor

My question is, doesn't the maintenance plan have this functionality inherent in it when you create the maintenance jobs to reindex? Is there a benefit to scripting things out vs just using the maintenance plan wizard for this sort of thing and any of the items it covers? I came from an Oracle background where this was a no-brainer but I am a bit confused on the choices with SQL Server.

Thanks.

Error 8525: Distributed Transaction Completed. Either Enlist This Session In A New Transaction Or The NULL Transaction.

May 31, 2008

Hi All

I'm getting this when executing the code below. Going from W2K/SQL2k SP4 to XP/SQL2k SP4 over a dial-up link.

If I take away the begin tran and commit it works, but of course, if one statement fails I want a rollback. I'm executing this from a Delphi app, but I get the same from Qry Analyser.

I've tried both with and without the Set XACT . . ., and also tried with Set Implicit_Transactions off.

set XACT_ABORT ON
Begin distributed Tran
update OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','Data Source=10.10.10.171;User ID=*****;Password=****').TRANSFERSTN.TSADMIN.TRANSACTIONMAIN
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update TSADMIN.TRANSACTIONMAIN
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1 and DONE = 1
update OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','Data Source=10.10.10.171;User ID=*****;Password=****').TRANSFERSTN.TSADMIN.WBENTRY
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update TSADMIN.WBENTRY
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','Data Source=10.10.10.171;User ID=*****;Password=****').TRANSFERSTN.TSADMIN.FIXED
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update TSADMIN.FIXED
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','Data Source=10.10.10.171;User ID=*****;Password=****').TRANSFERSTN.TSADMIN.ALTCHARGE
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update TSADMIN.ALTCHARGE
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','Data Source=10.10.10.171;User ID=*****;Password=****').TRANSFERSTN.TSADMIN.TSAUDIT
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update TSADMIN.TSAUDIT
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
COMMIT TRAN

It's got me stumped, so any ideas gratefully received.Thx

SSIS, Distributed Transaction Completed. Either Enlist This Session In A New Transaction Or The NULL Transaction.

I have a design a SSIS Package for ETL Process. In my package i have to read the data from the tables and then insert into the another table of same structure.

I have increase and decrease the time to catch the error but it is still there i have tried to set 0 for commandout Properties.

if i'm using the 0 for commandtime out then i'm getting the Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new transaction or the NULL transaction.

Maintenance Commands Affect On Log File / Log File Maintenance Without Log File Backups?

Jun 18, 2015

I am testing some maintenance tasks sql commands such as index rebuild, index reorg, update statistics and db integrity check on a SQL Server 2014 Database. This is a new non-production vendor database (DB Size 500 GBs, Log Size 25 GBs) which eventually will be created in production. Currently, it is in full recovery model and without log backups. The database has a whole lot of indexes. I am just trying to rebuild and reorganize all the indexes (that need it), in addition to trying to get an idea of how long these maintenance task will take and the space needed in the log file to complete these tasks/commands. I would like to execute these tasks manually (the first time) to gather the duration and space required information. Eventually, I would probably schedule a weekly job to perform this maintenance.

I ran the index rebuild task on the database and noticed that the log file grew by over 50 GBs. I killed the process and truncated and shrunk the log file back down.

1. Does the index rebuild, index reorg, update statistics and db integrity check commands all use the log file?

2. Does Indexs Reorg have less impact on log file then Index Rebuild?

3. Should a truncate log and shrink log file be performed after these maintenance commands?

4. Should a full database backup be performed after these maintenance commands? Or before the maintenance commands?

I have read and understand that shrinking is not good for the database (could lead to more fragmentation and more data file growth when data is added) and I know about rebuilding indexes when fragmentation is GT 30% and reorganizing indexes when fragmentation is GT 5% and LE 30%.

Since this is a non-production database maybe I should set the recovery model to simple, run the maintenance commands and leave the database in simple recovery model unless the vendor needs it in full recovery model for some unknown reason.

5. With the simple recovery model the log file should be reused in a circular manner and not grow during these maintenance tasks. Is this correct?

TRANSACTIONS In SSIS (error: The ROLLBACK TRANSACTION Request Has No Corresponding BEGIN TRANSACTION.

Nov 14, 2006

I'm receiving the below error when trying to implement Execute SQL Task.

"The ROLLBACK TRANSACTION request has no corresponding BEGIN TRANSACTION." This error also happens on COMMIT as well and there is a preceding Execute SQL Task with BEGIN TRANSACTION tranname WITH MARK 'tran'

I know I can change the transaction option property from "supported" to "required" however I want to mark the transaction. I was copying the way Import/Export Wizard does it however I'm unable to figure out why it works and why mine doesn't work.

Anyone know of the reason?

Analysis :: Find Amount Distribution Across Different Transaction Types Under Spend Transaction

Jul 27, 2015

I created a Calculated measure in cube something like this : ([TransType].[TransTypeHierarchy].[TransTypeCategoryParent].&[SPEND],[Measures].[Transaction Amount]). To get only spend transactions. Now, I want to slice this measure with same hierarchy to find the amount distribution across different transaction types under spend transaction. But this query behaving like the measure doesn't have relation with measure.

you can think this as below query:
WITH
MEMBER SPEND AS ([TransType].[TransTypeHierarchy].[TransTypeCategoryParent].&[SPEND],[Measures].[Transaction Amount])
SELECT NON EMPTY {SPEND} ON 0
,NON EMPTY ([TransType].[TransTypeHierarchy].[TransTypeCategoryParent]) ON 1

How Do I Make Use Of Begin Transaction And Commit Transaction In SSIS.

Hi

How do I make use of begin transaction and commit transaction in SSIS.

As am not able to commit changes due to certain update commands I want to explicitly write begin and commit statements. but when i make use of begin and commit in OLEDB commnad stage it throws an error as follows:

Hresult:0x80004005

descriptionyntax error or access violation.

its definately not an syntax error as i executed it in sql server. also when i use it in execute sql task out side the dataflow container it doesnt throw any error but still this task doesnt serve my purpose of saving/ commiting update chanages in the database.

Problem With SSIS Transaction...Transaction Scope

Jun 1, 2006

Hi,

I am having some problem with SSIS transaction. Eventhought I tried to imitate the concept that Jamie presented at http://www.sqlservercentral.com/columnists/jthomson/transactionsinsqlserver2005integrationservices.asp

. My workflow is as followed

*********************************
For Each ADO.Record in Oracle (transaction=not supported)

If (Certain_Field_Value = 'A')

Lookup Data in SQL DB with values from Oracle (transaction=not supported)

DO Sequence A (Start a Transaction , transaction=required)

INSERT/UPDATE some records in SQLDB(transaction=supported)
Finish Sequence A ( transaction should stop here)
UPDATE Oracle DB ( Execute SQLTask, transaction=not supported)
If (Certain_Field_Value = 'B')

Lookup Data in SQL DB with values from Oracle (transaction=not supported)

DO Sequence B (Start a Transaction , transaction = required)

INSERT/UPDATE some records in SQLDB (transaction=supported)
Finish Sequence A ( transaction should stop here)
UPDATE Oracle DB ( Execute SQLTask, transaction=not supported)
If (Certain_Field_Value = 'C')

------------
------------
End ForEach Loop
*************************************
My requirements are that I want separate transaction for each Sequence A, B, C, etc... If Sequence A transaction fails, the other should still be continuing with another transaction.
But I am getting an error regarding the OLEDB Error in next Task (e.g in Certain_Field_Value = 'B') "Lookup Data in SQL DB with values from Oracle ", the error message is ".......Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new transaction or the NULL transaction. ".
What is it that I am doing wrong?

KyawAM

New Transaction Cannot Enlist In Transaction Coordinator (was Please Help...)

----------------------------------------------
dim conn, connectionstring

connectionstring= "Provider=SQLOLEDB.1; Data Source = blahblah; Initial Catalog = abc; User Id = osss; Password=xxx"

set conn = server.CreateObject("adodb.connection")
conn.open connectionstring

It's just basically to set up the connection to the SQL server, it works on my other pages, but on a few pages, the last line (conn.open connectionstring) triggers this error:

"Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '8004d00a'

I've never encountered this error before and I couldn't think of any solution... please help!!!

BEGIN TRANSACTION COMMIT TRANSACTION Help

Sep 24, 2007

I had thought that if any statement failed within a BEING TRANS .. COMMIT TRANS block, then all the statements would be rolled back. But I am seeing different behavior (SQL Server 2000 8.00.2039)

For instance, run these statements to set up a test:
--DROP TABLE testTable1
--DROP TABLE testTable2
CREATE TABLE testTable1 (f1 varchar(1))
CREATE TABLE testTable2 (f1 varchar(1))
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX idx_tmptmp ON testTable1 (f1)
insert into testTable1(f1) values ('a')

So table testTable1 has a unique index on it..

Now try to run these statements:

--DELETE FROM testTable2
BEGIN TRANSACTION
insert into testTable1(f1) values ('a')
insert into testTable2(f1) values ('a')
COMMIT TRANSACTION

SELECT * FROM testTable2

..the first insert fails on the unique index.. but the second insert succeeds. Shouldn't the second insert roll back? How can I make two operations atomic?

The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) has cancelled the distributed transaction.

The stored procedure uses linked servers and a transaction.
We're using the following transaction code in the stored procedure

BEGIN

BEGIN TRANSACTION

BEGIN TRY

---
procedure stuff here
---
COMMIT TRANSACTION
END TRY

BEGIN CATCH

DECLARE @ErrorSeverity INT, @ErrorNumber INT, @ErrorMessage NVARCHAR(4000), @ErrorState INT

SET @ErrorSeverity = ERROR_SEVERITY()

SET @ErrorNumber = ERROR_NUMBER()

SET @ErrorMessage = ERROR_MESSAGE()

SET @ErrorState = ERROR_STATE()

IF @ErrorState = 0

SET @ErrorState = 1

RAISERROR ('ERROR OCCURED:%d', @ErrorSeverity, @ErrorState, @ErrorNumber)

IF XACT_STATE() < 0

ROLLBACK TRANSACTION

END CATCH

END

I found the following link which seems to be the problem we're experiencinghttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/937517

The link includes a workaround which is the following:
"To prevent the SQLNCLI provider from sending an attention signal to the server, use the SQLNCLI provider to consume fully any rowsets that the OLE DB consumer creates. "

How do I use the SQLNCLI provider to fully consume any rowsets?

Maintenance A Very Large Db

Aug 31, 2001

Hi, anyone who administering the pretty big database not less than 30 Gb with the average number of rows in a table about 2M and more, please share you experience with maintenace of such a db. Esspecially i'm interesting in:

1) Indexes maintenance (When and how - just regular dbcc, maint. plan or some script to split the job twice and so on.)

2) Remove unused space from db. (not major)

The serever works 24*7, and it's transactional environment. SQL 7 sp3 on claster.

I run the sp. to rebuild all the indexes it takes about 2-3 hrs to determin the objects withfragmentation less than 80% and actually rebuilding, during this process the users experience the performance (specially for update/insert) problem. It looks like I need to change the plan or strategy to do this. Any thoughts appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Db Maintenance Plan

Oct 23, 2001

Hello All

I have been given a SQL Server 2000 database to look after which has been set up with a Database maintenance plan. The plan is set to backup the complete database and the transaction log. The backups are written to the local disk correctly but the plan is also set to remove any backup files (both database .BAK and transaction log .TRN) that are over one week old. Complete database .BAK files are written daily and the .TRN are written every hour daily. The .BAK files are removed ok automatically but the .TRN files are not - they are just slowly filling the disk. There does not seen to be anything different between the way the main database and the transaction log is set up in the maintenance plan.

I would be very grateful for any ideas
