Transaction Cannot Start While In Firehose Mode....????

Apr 21, 2004

Can someone please help me with this problem....

I am having problems entering info into my database. I haven't had any problems so far. But all of a sudden when I try to add info to some of my columns I get the error message:

"Transaction cannot start while in firehose mode."

My column type is nvarchar. I thought I might have the length set to low, but I set the length as high as 400 and can't fit the same length of entries as some of my 200 length columns.

And also there are no constraints or foreign key values related to the column. I even created a new column with nvarchar at 400 length just to test it and same error. I'm stumped...

Thank you whomever knows this problem....

Transaction Cannot Start In Firehose Mode

Oct 15, 2004

Hello everyone,

In SQL Server Enterprise Messenger I've been getting the following error in a pop up window:

"Transaction Cannot Start in Firehose Mode"

Besides this error that is featured in the Microsoft KB
BUG #: 228790 at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;286199

Is there any other reason why someone could open a table (that only has around 200 rows in it) and get this error message upon trying to update a row?

Firehose Mode Problem In MS SQL Server

i am facing this problem for quite some time in SQL Server.Ours is an online dedicated server. When addition or deletion of rows is directly performed by right clicking on the row of table, an error occurs "TRANSACTION CANNOT BE STARTED IN FIREHOSE MODE". But, the same row is deleted when a query is written for that through query analyzer.Another same kind of problem, if deletion of rows is directly performed by right clicking on the row of table, error shows as "cannot perform as too many rows are updated" but, the same is done through query analyzer. Can anyone please provide me the solution of this problem and what is the meaning of this "FIREHOSE MODE".Thanks & Regards,Sitangshu Roy

How To Start The MMSE In Silent Mode?

Mar 17, 2007

Hi all!

I'm making a custom unattended installation of SQL Server 2005 Express. I'm using WPI (Windows Post-Install) installing first Framework 2.0, then SQL 2005 Express and then I want tu ejecute some SQL sentences using SQLCMD. The problem is, that if I don´t start at least one time the Managament Studion Express, those sentences are not ejecuted. But, Why?
The first time you run the MMSE, you get a horizontal progress bar, telling you that MMSE is preparing for firt run.
Is there any way to automate this?

P.S. I'm starting the MSSQL service automatically using a template.ini.

Thank in advance,

Unable To Start An .mdf Instance Under A Specific Debuging Mode.

Aug 21, 2007

I have an ASP.NET project that uses a ASPNETDB.MDF file. This file is attached with a SQL Server Express everytime when I run the application, include debuging session. There are two debugging modes under Visual Studio 2005, through WebDev.WebServer or IIS. Both ways worked fine with this project until yesterday. Right now, whenever I try to debug it with WebDev.WebServer, it will show me an error:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
But if I debug it with IIS it works fine. Also, using the same machine and same installation of Visual Studio 2005 I can debug another project with WebDev.WebServer, that also uses a .mdf file (a different file). So, seems to me I jsut have problem with one mode and one project. The only thing that I did yesterday that I think may be relevant was that I reinstalled Visual Studio 2005 SP1 to fix another issue. Anyone has an idea? Thanks!

SSIS Package In Transaction Required Mode?

Jul 24, 2007

Hi Guys,

Refering to my previous post I've a package which easily run when transaction mode is Supported but when i put it to Required and All DFs are supported inside the sequence container it won't run.

Well technically it goes and pass step 1, so it goes to green but regardless of what i put in the 2nd DF it won't run. It just hangs in there.
When i check the component service and check DTC, the transaction would be running but never commited.

I have done most of the things about DTC and configuration with the MS articles as this package was failing before but now it just sits at this point.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Tempdb Log Mode Waiting Active Transaction

May 22, 2007

I am relatively new to SQL Server so excuse my ignorance.

I have noticed in many of my SQL Server 2005 instances that the tempdb database is very often reporting the log mode as waiting active_transaction or waiting checkpoint.

Is this of concern, how can I determine the cause of these waits and how can they be reduced or eliminated ?

Transaction Log Still Growing When In SIMPLE Recovery Mode

Dec 3, 2007

hi,
we have a SQL Server 2000 database which we set to 'SIMPLE' recovery mode at 6pm (due to nightly large data loads). We revert back to 'FULL' recovery mode at 6am.

My understanding was that in 'SIMPLE' recovery mode, the transaction log would not grow because it would automatically be truncated after a checkpoint. However this is not the case. I thought perhaps it could be due to a long running uncomitted transaction, but when I ran 'dbcc opentran', the oldest running transactions doesn't last for more than a couple minutes. I manually run a 'checkpoint' command as well in the hope of forcing the transaction log truncation. I repeat this a couple of times to no avail. When I run 'dbcc sqlperf(logspace)' , I can still see the transaction log growing.

It is not until I run 'backup log db with truncate_only' that the transaction log gets truncated.
I do not understand, why the transaction log does not get automatically truncated in SIMPLE recovery mode?

Determine Updatable Transaction Replication Mode From Client Side

Sep 28, 2007

We are currently testing a Replication topology as follows:
SQL Server 2005 Developer as publisher and distributor of a push updatable transaction replication
2 SQL Server 2005 Express clients as subscribers.

The replication is working great. If the connection is lost, the subscribers switch from Immediate to Queued Updating, and seem to shift back to Immediate when they regain the connection.

My question is to determine if there is a way that I can ask SQL Express on the client which mode is it currently running, or ask SQL Express if it has a current live connection to the distributor.

I know that they are usually mutliple ways to accomplish tasks, and I would be open any suggestions, preferrable programming in VB (such as with SMO or RMO) or using stored procedures or functions.

I hope this give some people something to chew on during the weekend and thank you to all that have taking the time to read this.

Transaction Log Huge Loading SQL Profiler Trace Files In Simple Mode

Dec 8, 2007

Hi there - can anyone advise on the following issue. We have recently performed some server side tracing on a particular SQL instance over 24hr period. We are now attempting to load these into a database for analysis. Here lies the problem.

When we are loading the profiler trace files (one at a time) into the database the transaction log is growing at an excessive rate. Even though the database is in SIMPLE mode.

We are loading the traces using the command:

INSERT INTO sqlTableToLoad
SELECT * FROM ::fn_trace_gettable('MytraceFileName', DEFAULT)

Can anyone advise how we could possibly get round this issue as we're running out of space due to the transaction log.

Thanks

New Request Is Not Allowed To Start Because It Should Come With Valid Transaction Descriptor

May 9, 2006

Hi all,
We are getting "New request is not allowed to start because it should come with valid transaction descriptor" when using transactions against SQL 2005. As I understand it, it's a bug that occurs after some statement has terminated against the database; see http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/productfeedback/ViewWorkaround.aspx?FeedbackID=FDBK46530#1

Now, I wonder if there is a hotfix coming soon on this?

DB Engine :: Unable To Start Distributed Transaction Between Two Clustered Servers?

Jul 2, 2015

I have 4 servers, 2 each for application (Dev & Prod)

DEV 1 & DEV 2 are standalone servers

Prod 1 & Prod 2 are Windows Clustered Servers.

From one application to other we do Distributed transactions. Dev 1 - Dev 2 or Dev 2 - Dev 1 can start DTC and working fine, but issue comes when Prod 1 - Prod 2 or Prod 2 - Prod 1. I get error message OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "xyz" returned message "No transaction is active.".

Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 3

The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "xyz" was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

I have tested Dev 1 - Prod 1, Dev 1 - Prod 2, Dev 2 - Prod 1, Dev 2 - Prod 2 everything is working fine only Production servers are causing issue.

I enabled all settings needed for DTC on Cluster MSDTC service but no luck.

Query Executes Faster In Grid Mode Than In Text Mode!!

Mar 9, 2000

Hello,everyone!!

There is a query which when executed in the grid mode(ctrl+d) takes approx 0.02 seconds(about 21,000
rows) But when I execute in the text mode, it takes about 0.40 seconds!!
Why is this difference?
Also, when the records from this table are read from a VB application, they are equally slow (as in the text mode!)
Why is it so slow on the text mode & relatively faster in the grid mode?
Has anyone got any idea on ‘Firehose’ style cursor ?(which may speed up access of data in the VB application)

Rgds,
Adie

Local Intranet Mode Versus Internet Mode.

Jul 16, 2007

Hi,

Currently, our Report Builder is running on Local Intranet mode. I'm investigating what the security implications are in changing it to Internet mode. However, I've not been able to find any documentation on this.

Does anyone know of any documentation that addresses this issue or have experience that they can share with changing Report Builder security zone from Intranet mode to Internet mode?

Thanks very much.

Mixed Mode To Windows Mode Without Trace....

Hi folks,

I have a SQL 2005 OTC. CTP version running on Windows 2003 server.

I would like to find out how the SQL server option changed to Windows Authentication mode from Mixed mode over the weekend.  From the SQL log, I don't see when it changed.  I would like to see Date/Time and client IP.  If I can see User ID (windows) that would be great.  Where I can find these info in SQL server?

Thank you in advance...

Error 8525: Distributed Transaction Completed. Either Enlist This Session In A New Transaction Or The NULL Transaction.

May 31, 2008

Hi All

I'm getting this when executing the code below. Going from W2K/SQL2k SP4 to XP/SQL2k SP4 over a dial-up link.

If I take away the begin tran and commit it works, but of course, if one statement fails I want a rollback. I'm executing this from a Delphi app, but I get the same from Qry Analyser.

I've tried both with and without the Set XACT . . ., and also tried with Set Implicit_Transactions off.

set XACT_ABORT ON
Begin distributed Tran
update OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','Data Source=10.10.10.171;User ID=*****;Password=****').TRANSFERSTN.TSADMIN.TRANSACTIONMAIN
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1

set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1 and DONE = 1
update OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','Data Source=10.10.10.171;User ID=*****;Password=****').TRANSFERSTN.TSADMIN.WBENTRY
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1

set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','Data Source=10.10.10.171;User ID=*****;Password=****').TRANSFERSTN.TSADMIN.FIXED
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update TSADMIN.FIXED
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1
update OPENDATASOURCE('SQLOLEDB','Data Source=10.10.10.171;User ID=*****;Password=****').TRANSFERSTN.TSADMIN.ALTCHARGE
set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1

set REPFLAG = 0 where REPFLAG = 1

It's got me stumped, so any ideas gratefully received.Thx
