Transaction Definition/Server Management
Dec 4, 2000
I need to keep a table indicating the number of "transactions" or Logical Units of Work (LUW) against each database each day. I know transactions are defined with a Begin and End statement but most of our software is from 3rd party vendors who don't use begin and end. How can I determine how many transactions (not necessarily I/O although that might be nice in the future) has occurred against each database. Books On Line does not address the question of transactions other than to say use the Begin/End statments. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I'm have a Xeon 64bit proc. using SP2. And had installed:
SQLServer2005_ADOMD_x64.msi, SLQServer2005_ASOLEDB9_x64.msi,SQLServer2005_OLAPDM_x64.msi, and SQLServer2005_XMO_x64.msi.

Hi,
I'm new to MS SQL and would like to get your opinion on how it's possible to automatically manage transaction log growth. I've read the following on the topic:
"When Microsoft SQL Server finishes backing up the transaction log, it truncates the inactive portion of the transaction log. This frees up space on the transaction log. SQL Server can reuse this truncated space instead of causing the transaction log to continuously grow and consume more space. The active portion of the transaction log contains transactions that are still running and have not completed yet."
I'm backing up the transaction logs on a daily basis. Still one of the logs grew up to 130Gb even though I have shrunk it in the past. How can I manage the growth automatically without shrinking the log files manually every time they grow beyond a certain threshold?
Thanks in advance,
Alla

Still one of the logs grew up to 130Gb even though I have shrunk it in the past. How can I manage the growth automatically without shrinking the log files manually every time they grow beyond a certain threshold? Also, how can I check whether some of the log portions are active or inactive?
Thanks in advance,

Let's say I may possibly use two transactions in a script, the secondone will depend on the successful execution of the first one.The following code works. However, I'm wondering if SQL Server 2000has some internal function like @@transaction_status to indicate thestatus of the most recent transaction by the connection. The analogueof @@FETCH_STATUS. Then, my own error tracking code could be omitted.Thanks.-- ENV: SQL Server 2000-- ddlscreate table tblA (col1 smallint, col2 smallint)create table tblB (col1 smallint, col2 smallint)create table tblX (col1 char(1), col2 varchar(20))declare @errorCode tinyIntset @errorCode = 0begin transaction fTraninsert into tblAvalues (7,1);insert into tblBvalues (8,0);-- we know this guy will failinsert into tblXvalues ('ab','abcdefge')If (@@error <> 0)beginselect @errorCode = 1endif (@errorCode = 1)rollback transaction fTranelsecommit transaction fTranif (@errorCode = 0)pseducode: start second transaction here ...elseprint 'fTran failed.';RETURN

I have a SSIS package that is run from one job, nowhere else. The package has TransactionOption NotSupported.
In the SSIS package I first have a sequence container that has TransactionOption Required (Serializable). The sequence container contains several Execute SQL tasks that access the same SQL Server 2005 database. The Execute SQL tasks have TransactionOption supported / Serializable. The first SQL statement is:
select p.column_name
from table_name p with (XLOCK, ROWLOCK)
where p.second_column_name = 'COLUMN_VALUE'
After this there are a couple of SQL tasks, and finally a task containing the following SQL:
select p.third_column_name
from table_name p
where p.second_colomn_name = 'COLUNM_NAME'
The idea is that the first query exclusively locks the row in the table_name-table for mutual exclusion purposes, i.e. so that if for some reason the SSIS package would be executed simultaneously two or more times, only one package execution could lock the row and proceed and the other executions will have to wait. There's an index on column second_column_name in the table to avoid the select locking other rows in addition to the required row.
Some questions:
1) Is it so in my setup that when SSIS runtime executes the sequence container it creates a transaction in the beginning of the sequence container and commits the transaction in the end of the sequence container? And in my setup the Execute SQL tasks in the sequence containar are executed under the same transaction?
2) I have a problem that the second query sometimes gives this error:"ErrorCode: -1073548784. ErrorDescription: Executing the query "XXXXX" failed with the following error: "Transaction (Process ID 73) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly."
The 1st query has locked the row for the transaction. How can the second query be deadlocked, shouldn't the transaction have a lock on the row? I'd understand if the 1st query failed sometimes, but don't understand how the 2nd quey can fail.

JM

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

I am trying to copy the table data from db to another db, because some tables has XML column with a schema collection, I would like to get difinition of the XML schema collection and create it on the target db, otherwise I will get below error:
Xml columns cannot refer to schemata across databases.
My plan is for those tables with xml column with schema collection, I will:
1. Get all tables/columns that requires xml schema
SELECT t.name AS table_name,
SCHEMA_NAME(t.schema_id) AS schema_name,
c.name AS column_nam,
c2.name
FROM sys.tables AS t
INNER JOIN sys.columns c ON t.OBJECT_ID = c.OBJECT_ID
inner join sys.xml_schema_collections c2 on c.xml_collection_id = C2.xml_collection_id
2. Get table definition
DECLARE
@object_name SYSNAME
, @object_id INT
, @SQL NVARCHAR(MAX)
SELECT
@object_name = '[' + OBJECT_SCHEMA_NAME(o.[object_id]) + '].[' + OBJECT_NAME([object_id]) + ']'
, @object_id = [object_id]
FROM (SELECT [object_id] = OBJECT_ID('TableName', 'U')) o
[code].....
3. Get XML Schema definition
4. Combine 2 and 3.
5 insert into newtable select .... cast(xmlColumnas xml) from OldDB.dbo.oldtable
I am stuck at step 3 now....

The developers in our shop have a need to explicitly grant view definition permissions to themselves on stored procedures they create in their development databases. They have dbo level permissions in these databases and although they can explicitly grant view definition permissions to other developers in the same database, they are unable to do so for themselves. When they attempt this, it appears that they are successful but when they check the stored procedure afterwards the permission is not there for themselves.
While this does not cause an issue in development, the intention is for these view definition permissions to be carried forward to the test and production databases where they only have datareader permissions.
When these stored procedures are scripted out by the dba to move to Test and Production the view definition permissions are not scripted out for the developer in question.
Is there a way that a developer with dbo rights in a database can explicitly grant themselves view definition permissions on a stored procedure they create as dbo?

One of my actual production environments is a Failover two-node cluster, SQL Server 2005 SP3 on Windows Server 2003 R2. Recently, the node 2 was failed, so I formatted a new machine to add the new node, but it failed with the following error: “Adding nodes to the Virtual Server definition using a newer version of Setup is not allowed.”I have searching across the web for a solution but I can’t find it.
The Summary file “Summary.txt” are:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.1399.06
OS Version : Microsoft Windows Server 2003 family, Enterprise Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 3790)
Time
: Thu Jun 04 13:04:38 2015
[code]....
One point of my attention, it’s that the Product Version that appears on this summary file corresponding a 9.00.1399.06 that is to say, a RTM version, not SP3 (9.00.4035).Based on this, I went to the path where the files of installation are (ARPWrapper.exe), "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup Bootstrap"and I 've found that these files contain a different version of what I have currently installed. For example, in properties of ARPWrapper.exe the version of this is 2005.90.1399.0 The same goes for the rest of the files in that folder:
Microsoft.SqlServer.AnalysisServices.UpgradeAdvisor.dll
Microsoft.SqlServer.BestPracticesAnalyzer.UpgradeAdvisor.dll
Microsoft.SqlServer.DTS.UpgradeAdvisor.dll
setup.exe
Is it possible that the solution is to replace these files with the corresponding version, in this case the version 2005.90.4035.0(SP3) and continue with the installation?

If I take away the begin tran and commit it works, but of course, if one statement fails I want a rollback. I'm executing this from a Delphi app, but I get the same from Qry Analyser.

I have increase and decrease the time to catch the error but it is still there i have tried to set 0 for commandout Properties.
if i'm using the 0 for commandtime out then i'm getting the Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new transaction or the NULL transaction.

SQL Server 7.0 (SP1)
Error:
------
OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' supplied inconsistent metadata. An extra column was supplied during execution that was not found at compile time.
A column was deleted from the a table on the linked server and now this message appears when using the linked server definition to access the table. Deleting/Recreating the Linked Server has no effect. I found an earlier note on this...but it just kind of ended with no resolution. Anyone have any thoughts on this now.
Thanks for any input.

Good morning, all!
I'm tasked with creating POCO (C# Class Object) and XML definitions for three different kinds of records coming from my input file. The problem is that I'm not sure how to do this within the SSIS framework. It seems to me that I can somehow define a class and include XML element tags in the definition, but I'm not sure where to look/who to ask/how to do that!
The goal is to be able to assign the data types and class attributes for various parts of each input record based on position, and to serialize the data as XML (and therefore my inputs to my Data Flow will be XML objects instead of a flat file, as I had been doing it...).
Can anyone point me at a good tutorial? Or a simple example?
Also, is "DateTime" a recognized data type in C#?
Thanks a bunch!
