Transaction Log Filesize Out Of Control
Sep 20, 2004
I have a DB that has a DB filesize of 6 gb and a transaction log filesize of 66gb!!!! This DB has a potential for alot of growth because it holds scanned documents for retention and they are in the process of scanning in several years worth of documents from what I understand.
I have my maintenance plan setup to backup the DB full overnight and transaction log backups hourly during the day. usually my transaction log backups are small - but on friday, the transction log backup was 66gb and it filled up the disk. after doing some cleanup, I ran a full and then a transaction log backup and everything seems OK. But the transaction log file itself remains at 66gb!
I'm just wondering how I can optimize my Database AND especially my maintenance plans so that the transaction log gets back down to a manageable size?? Can I or should shrink the transaction log?? Should my DB be set to 'autoshrink'???????

Hi all,
Just wondering if the virtual filesize of the transaction log can be changed to suite us.
run dbcc loginfo(sagent_dev) display the followings:
FileId FileSize StartOffset FSeqNo Status Parity
213041664 8192 2110128
213041664 130498561960128
213041664 26091520197064
2524288039133184201064
2524288065404928204064
2524288070647808203064
25242880102105088210064
25242880107347968000
25242880112590848214264
25242880117833728213064
25242880123076608212064
Note that the virtual filesize can comprise of different configuration. In other database I can specify this logical size to whatever I like.

When I do a data flow task like following, always blocking
1.get data from data source
2.conditional spit by column='Y' or 'N'
3.when column='Y' insert to table a
4 when column='N', ole db command, update table a
but when I run this package, I see there are some rows are 'Y', some rows are 'N',but they can't run together.
Why? I've took long time for the issues.
When I change this data flow to a data flow plus t-sql task, and change ole db command( update table a) to execute tsql task.
The issue can be solved. But I want to know why i can't put these in one data flow?

can we control how transaction send from principal to mirror ?
If application inserting 10000000 rows in one transaction to principal database
how infomation will be transfered once it is commited and where it will be stored before it is replayed on mirror database?
1. Is it going to be 1 big data packet ?
2.is it going to be split on many packets (of what size ?)

I've got a very filesize restricted database. I noticed that when I insert 1000 rows my filesize jumps to 80k, but when I delete all but 50 of those rows...the filesize actually increases to 84k. How do I make sure the filesize of my database shrinks when I delete rows?
Thanks!

Hi guys,
I have this stange problem after changing .Net CF 1.1 to 2.0.
I create the mobile database within the PPC, reading data from text files and use INSERT INTO query and build up the database. I don't recall having the 128MB filesize limit using CF 1.1 but after changing to CF 2.0 for my codes.
Dim sqlCreateTableW As Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand = ssceconn.CreateCommand()sqlCreateTableW.CommandText = "CREATE TABLE MyTbl(id integer IDENTITY(0,1) PRIMARY KEY, data ntext, ref ntext)"
sqlCreateTableW.ExecuteNonQuery()
Dim sqlIndexTableW As Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand = ssceconn.CreateCommand()
sqlIndexTableW.CommandText = "CREATE INDEX IdInd ON MyTbl (id ASC)"
sqlIndexTableW.ExecuteNonQuery()
Dim sqlInsertRowW As Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand = ssceconn.CreateCommand()
looping the code below
sqlInsertRowW.CommandText = "INSERT INTO MyTbl(data, ref) VALUES('" & str1 & "', '" & str2 & "')"
sqlInsertRowW.ExecuteNonQuery()
I have 3 columns in the table, including an index (id). I found this link http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms172451.aspx and it states that:
1The default maximum size is 128 MB.
2This limit is applied only if a storage engine temporary table is used for implementing ORDER BY. If the Query Processor can leverage an existing index, there is no maximum column-number limit.
Did I do anything wrong or missed out something?
Regards.

Hi All
I'm getting this when executing the code below. Going from W2K/SQL2k SP4 to XP/SQL2k SP4 over a dial-up link.
If I take away the begin tran and commit it works, but of course, if one statement fails I want a rollback. I'm executing this from a Delphi app, but I get the same from Qry Analyser.
I've tried both with and without the Set XACT . . ., and also tried with Set Implicit_Transactions off.
set XACT_ABORT ON
Begin distributed Tran

UPDATE #2: When it said "Do you want to install Microsoft SQL Server" I said "yes" and that caused it to work. I exited and re-ran and now the print runs w/o the "install SQL Server" (If the prompt had said "Do you want to install the print dialog" we wouldn't be having this discussion...)
UPDATE: After posting this i discovered that the same thing occurs when attempting to print the report direct from IE6: First a dialog pops up "Do you want to install this software?" Name: Microsoft SQL Server. When I click "Don't Install" I get the dialog "unable to load client print control." Since this happens direct from IE6 I suspect it's browser settings. I'll resume tomorrow and post a followup.
My WinForm C# app integrates Reporting Services by calling them from WebBrowser controls. The problem is attempts to print cause a dialog: "unable to load client print control."
I've read prior posts that say "enable Active-X in your browser" - I don't know how to do that from a WebBrowser control.
Any ideas how to support Reporting Services "Print" from within a WebBrowser control?

I'm receiving the below error when trying to implement Execute SQL Task.
"The ROLLBACK TRANSACTION request has no corresponding BEGIN TRANSACTION." This error also happens on COMMIT as well and there is a preceding Execute SQL Task with BEGIN TRANSACTION tranname WITH MARK 'tran'
I know I can change the transaction option property from "supported" to "required" however I want to mark the transaction. I was copying the way Import/Export Wizard does it however I'm unable to figure out why it works and why mine doesn't work.
Anyone know of the reason?

I created a Calculated measure in cube something like this : ([TransType].[TransTypeHierarchy].[TransTypeCategoryParent].&[SPEND],[Measures].[Transaction Amount]). To get only spend transactions. Now, I want to slice this measure with same hierarchy to find the amount distribution across different transaction types under spend transaction. But this query behaving like the measure doesn't have relation with measure.
you can think this as below query:
WITH
MEMBER SPEND AS ([TransType].[TransTypeHierarchy].[TransTypeCategoryParent].&[SPEND],[Measures].[Transaction Amount])
SELECT NON EMPTY {SPEND} ON 0
,NON EMPTY ([TransType].[TransTypeHierarchy].[TransTypeCategoryParent]) ON 1
FROM [CUBE]

Hi
How do I make use of begin transaction and commit transaction in SSIS.
As am not able to commit changes due to certain update commands I want to explicitly write begin and commit statements. but when i make use of begin and commit in OLEDB commnad stage it throws an error as follows:
Hresult:0x80004005
descriptionyntax error or access violation.
its definately not an syntax error as i executed it in sql server. also when i use it in execute sql task out side the dataflow container it doesnt throw any error but still this task doesnt serve my purpose of saving/ commiting update chanages in the database.
Thanks,

Hi,
I am having some problem with SSIS transaction. Eventhought I tried to imitate the concept that Jamie presented at http://www.sqlservercentral.com/columnists/jthomson/transactionsinsqlserver2005integrationservices.asp
. My workflow is as followed
*********************************
For Each ADO.Record in Oracle (transaction=not supported)
If (Certain_Field_Value = 'A')
Lookup Data in SQL DB with values from Oracle (transaction=not supported)
DO Sequence A (Start a Transaction , transaction=required)
INSERT/UPDATE some records in SQLDB(transaction=supported)
Finish Sequence A ( transaction should stop here)
UPDATE Oracle DB ( Execute SQLTask, transaction=not supported)
If (Certain_Field_Value = 'B')
Lookup Data in SQL DB with values from Oracle (transaction=not supported)
DO Sequence B (Start a Transaction , transaction = required)
INSERT/UPDATE some records in SQLDB (transaction=supported)
Finish Sequence A ( transaction should stop here)
UPDATE Oracle DB ( Execute SQLTask, transaction=not supported)
If (Certain_Field_Value = 'C')
------------
------------
End ForEach Loop
*************************************
My requirements are that I want separate transaction for each Sequence A, B, C, etc... If Sequence A transaction fails, the other should still be continuing with another transaction.
But I am getting an error regarding the OLEDB Error in next Task (e.g in Certain_Field_Value = 'B') "Lookup Data in SQL DB with values from Oracle ", the error message is ".......Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new transaction or the NULL transaction. ".
What is it that I am doing wrong?

KyawAM

Hi all,
In my ASP application, I've been using this code:
----------------------------------------------
dim conn, connectionstring
connectionstring= "Provider=SQLOLEDB.1; Data Source = blahblah; Initial Catalog = abc; User Id = osss; Password=xxx"
set conn = server.CreateObject("adodb.connection")
conn.open connectionstring
----------------------------------------------
It's just basically to set up the connection to the SQL server, it works on my other pages, but on a few pages, the last line (conn.open connectionstring) triggers this error:
"Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '8004d00a'
New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. "
I've never encountered this error before and I couldn't think of any solution... please help!!!
Thanks so much,

I had thought that if any statement failed within a BEING TRANS .. COMMIT TRANS block, then all the statements would be rolled back. But I am seeing different behavior (SQL Server 2000 8.00.2039)
For instance, run these statements to set up a test:
--DROP TABLE testTable1
--DROP TABLE testTable2
CREATE TABLE testTable1 (f1 varchar(1))
CREATE TABLE testTable2 (f1 varchar(1))
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX idx_tmptmp ON testTable1 (f1)
insert into testTable1(f1) values ('a')
So table testTable1 has a unique index on it..
Now try to run these statements:
--DELETE FROM testTable2
BEGIN TRANSACTION
insert into testTable1(f1) values ('a')
insert into testTable2(f1) values ('a')
COMMIT TRANSACTION
SELECT * FROM testTable2
..the first insert fails on the unique index.. but the second insert succeeds. Shouldn't the second insert roll back? How can I make two operations atomic?

We have a test db, a staging db and a live db. I have a stored procedure that runs fine on test and staging, but throws the following error on live.
The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) has cancelled the distributed transaction.
The stored procedure uses linked servers and a transaction.
We're using the following transaction code in the stored procedure
BEGIN
BEGIN TRANSACTION
BEGIN TRY
---
procedure stuff here
---
COMMIT TRANSACTION
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
DECLARE @ErrorSeverity INT, @ErrorNumber INT, @ErrorMessage NVARCHAR(4000), @ErrorState INT
SET @ErrorSeverity = ERROR_SEVERITY()
SET @ErrorNumber = ERROR_NUMBER()
SET @ErrorMessage = ERROR_MESSAGE()
SET @ErrorState = ERROR_STATE()
IF @ErrorState = 0
SET @ErrorState = 1
RAISERROR ('ERROR OCCURED:%d', @ErrorSeverity, @ErrorState, @ErrorNumber)
IF XACT_STATE() < 0
ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
END CATCH
END
I found the following link which seems to be the problem we're experiencinghttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/937517
The link includes a workaround which is the following:
"To prevent the SQLNCLI provider from sending an attention signal to the server, use the SQLNCLI provider to consume fully any rowsets that the OLE DB consumer creates. "
How do I use the SQLNCLI provider to fully consume any rowsets?

Hello everyone,This is more of an architectural question about SQL Server. Cansomeone please explain why when I perform a query such as the onebelow that updates a table using begin and end transaction I am unableto programmatically truncate the transaction log. The only way I havefound to truncate the transaction log is to stop and start the SQLServer Service. Does this transaction use the tempdb? Is that why Iam unable to truncate the transaction log? Is there a better way todo this?Begin trans T1Update sometableSet random_row = 'blah'End trans T1Thanks!
