Transactional Replicating Hanging SQL Server 2005
Dec 22, 2005
Hi,
It appears that every 5 or so days, my transactional replication is hanging. I see that I have a couple thousand undistributed commands and this number keeps growing. It forces me to generate a snapshot in order to sync up. When generating the snapshot, I will get frequent messages like "waiting for a response from server...". So I will keep stopping and starting syncronization. Eventually the snapshot will go out, with a delay after generation.
Has anyone experienced this?
Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Nick

Hi,I recently installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition (9.0.1399) andI have problems on queries concerning system file manipulation...For example, when I try to increase the Log File of MSDB database :ALTER DATABASE msdbMODIFY FILE(NAME = 'MSDBLog',SIZE = 50MB)This query never terminates...All SQL queries for database creation never terminateCREATE DATABASE EASYSHAREON PRIMARY(NAME = EASYSHAREData,FILENAME = 'D:AQSACOMDATAEasyshareEasyshareData.mdf',SIZE = 200MB,MAXSIZE = 1000MB,FILEGROWTH = 100MB)LOG ON(NAME = EASYSHARELog,FILENAME = 'E:AQSALOGEasyshareEasyshareLog.ldf',SIZE = 100MB,MAXSIZE = 300MB,FILEGROWTH = 50MB)Would someone have an idea of what happens...I'm running on Windows 2000 Server...ThanksPatrick

We have found an issue with using MSS 2005 with odbc connections, some of
our code inserts data, then reselects the data back with a select using a
different handle. This hasn't caused any issues before but in one customer
this causes a lock up. The timeout error doesn't occur as you would expect
if trying to select data that is uncommitted by another user.
Although obviously we could re-code to avoid selecting uncommitted rows, can
anyone tell me why this works sometimes but not others. Some kind of
setting in MSS that we're unaware of maybe. The code works ok on other MSS
2005 & MSS 2000 servers and oracle & sqlbase.

Hello,
I have been unable to create a replication from an SQL Server 2005 standard edition database to remote SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. The remote express edition is on a Virtual Private Server we are leasing from a hosting company. The name of the remote DB is similar to vs572.si-vs572.com. I can connect to this with SQL server authentication through Management Studio and also with SSIS. But, I have been unable to create a push subscription (I have tried a test push subscription with the same publication to a local SQL Express server here in our office and this works fine).
Here is the error message: SQL Server Replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, 'VS572SQLEXPRESS'.
The hosting company had originally installed a shared SQL server which would not support replication. They then installed SQL Express edition and I was hoping this would allow us to run a replication.
I tried to connect to VS572SQLEXPRESS with out any luck. I check the remote connections, made sure replication was installed, etc., but no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Albert

Subscription to "Transactional Publication with Updateable Subscriptions" works only one way. Changes take effect on subscriber, but the subcriber is unable to update data on publisher.
I have Sanpshot Agent process running under SQL Server Agent service account with login 'sa.' All agents are running at the Distributor (Publishing Server.)

I am trying to test simple replication (only tables) of a database that resides on a SQL Server 2005 instance to a SQL Server 2000 instance. The Publisher and Distributer are set up on the SQL Server 2005 instance for Transactional replication. The subscriber is set up on in the 2000 instance. Replication Monitor shows the following error after applying a few scripts:
"Category: SQLSERVER Source SQLSERVER2000 Number: 170 Message: Line 6: Incorrect syntax near
'max'."
Here SQLSERVER2000 is the name of my 2000 instance, as should be obvious.
Beyond this point, replication fails. Any pointers as to where the problem could lie? Is this a known backward compatibility issue? I've checked all tables in the database and none contain any datatype that is new to 2005 (the database was actually created in and for SQL Server 2000.
Replication from 2000 to 2005 works fine, but the other way round is failing as described above. Any clues?

I am using Sql 2005 and merge replication. I am relying on the feature where schema changes are replicated to subscribers but I have come across a situation where schema changes stop being replicated.
This is the scenario:
I create a database and publish it for merge replication.
I add subscribers.
If I need to change the published database I can use ALTER TABLE ddl and the subscriber gets the changes.
If I have to add or remove a merge article as part of a database change I specify the @force_invalidate_snapshot=1, @force_reinit_subscription=1. No any ALTER TABLE statements following the article change will NOT be replicated.
Is this a known 'feature'? Is it because @force_reinit_subscription is set to 1?
Can anyone help me?

I am wondering if there is a way to replicate changes in a SQL 2000 DB to 2005 without backing up the DB and restoring it in 2005.
We are running an ERP system using SQL 2000 and are moving to a later version that supports 2005 and we want to test it out before going live but I'd like to sync with the current system from time to time instead of having to convert the DB and get it ready again and again everytime I want to update the data.
Thanks for any help you can offer,

Hello,
I've been searching for information on this for awhile unsuccessully. I am using SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edititon and transactional replication with separate publisher, distributor and subscribers. I need to encrypt data on our publisher and then I need to replicate that data out (i.e., encrypted data, not encrypted transmission). Since the keys are server specific, I imaging there might be some difficulty in doing this, but I figure I can't be the only one with this problem. Does anyone have a resource or know what must be done to get this accomplished?
Thanks,

I have a problem with a process hanging my SQL server machine and the only thing that can fix it is to reboot the machine.
The environment is SQL Server 7, NT sp5, dual processor 500MHZ, 1 gig Ram.
The applications are run through MTS written in VB all executing stored procedures.
The symptoms are that the process hangs with an open transaction and it can be seen through DBCC OPENTRAN. It can also be seen in MTS on the Transaction List screen and shows as Aborting. It seems to get stuck in that state.
The Kill command does not work on the process either. I have tried one fixs that I thought may be causing the error by setting the Max Degree of Paralelism in sp_configure to 1 but that does not fix the problem.
Has anyone seen this and/or have any ideas on how to fix/repair the problem.
Thanks

Can anyone suggest what might be causing SQL Server 6.5 to hang?
The following messages were in the error log just before, but Books Online is not much help:
2000/08/21 10:35:20.90 ods Error : 17805, Severity: 18, State: 0
2000/08/21 10:35:20.90 ods Invalid buffer received from client.
2000/08/21 10:35:20.90 spid142 Process 142 entered sequencer without owning dataserver semaphore
there are then many messages like this one:
2000/08/21 10:36:21.06 ods Error : 17824, Severity: 10, State: 0
2000/08/21 10:36:21.06 ods Unable to write to ListenOn connection '.pipesqlquery', loginname 'E04180', hostname 'N90459'.
2000/08/21 10:36:21.06 ods OS Error : 109, The pipe has been ended.
and finally many more messages like this:
2000/08/21 10:51:20.75 ods Unable to connect. The maximum number of '750' configured user connections are already connected. System Administrator can configure to a higher value with sp_configure.
I don't think that simply increasing the number of user connections will help, but if anyone can throw some light on the cause of the first message I would be grateful.
Thanks,
John

Hi,Periodically I run some very complex queries or stored procedures that"hang", and the bigger problem is that it locks up all of the databaseclients ie 50 users connecting to the db via a windows application.I never know when this is going to happen, but when it does it leavesall the users completely hung up.1. Can I avoid this?2. Is there a way to "clear" what I was doing so that I don't have torestart the SQL Server serive?thanks,

I'm running 7.0 sp2,windows 2000, 1gig of ram, and a 933mhz cpu. Server has been very stable with no problems until I moved a 2gig table into the database. Query performance is excellent even table scans take less than 2 minutes. The problem is that once a table scan is performed on the table (I can't index for every possible query) the query finishes but the enterprise manager freezes on the server and users can no longer connect. I've set SQL server to have only 650 MB of ram and the rest is free, problem also existed when the memory was controlled entirely by SQL server.
My cache Hit Ratio was 97% and Cache flushes 0.0 (unfortunately these can't be checked when the problem exist because the box is frozen). I may have a concurrency issue but I'm not sure how to be positive. I don't want to just throw memory at the problem because I'm not sure the problem will be fixed.
Thanks for any help, Dave

I was wondering if anyone could provide me with some help, to do with a problem we are experiencing with SQL Server 7 and Windows NT 4.
We have a database that we have imported data into and are trying to build some indexes on one of the tables. THe database size is about 4GB and the table contains 21,000,000 records. When we try to build the indexes SQL server starts off OK, but after about five minutes all drive activity stops, the server stops responsing, and we need to reboot.
The machine has 2 P3 800 processers and 768Mb of RAM. NT is running on SP6 and SQL Server is running on SP3. We were initially running with 512 MB of RAM, but increased it because we thought the memory was a problem. The Server is not a dedicated SQL Server.
I have used performance monitor when running the query in SQL Analyser and have noted the following counters:
Total Server Memory
This starts off about 208000KB and creeps up to about 625000KB just before the server hangs.
Free Memory Available
This starts off high and is about 6MB just before the server hangs.
Page Reads Sec
Normally 370 and 410
Page Writes Sec
157
Buffer Cache hit Ratio
99.1
I have tried setting the SQL Server max memory option to about 600 MB, and also let SQL Server dynamically allocate it.

I am using SQL Server 6.5 (service pack 3) on an NT 4.0 (service pack 3). It is being used as the back-end database server for Solomon IV (accounting package from Solomon Software). The client machines eventually lock-up after limited activity. The first user to lock seems to do so when they issue a save, once they are locked all other users lock. In SQL activity log the processes has several tables locked. If this process is killed, the other users seem to free up. The only error message found in SQL errorlog is an ODS Unable to write to ListenOn "pipe.sqlquery".
This message seems to have been occuring for some time though (prior to the lock-up problems).
The only thing (I`m aware of) that changed is many of the clients where put on a 100Mb LAN and the database was expanded from 1G to 2G because it ws almost full.
Any suggestions???
Thanks,
Chris Sheehy

The backup jobs on one of our sql servers started hanging. The job appears to be complete because the backups are on the disk but the job never completes when viewed in the activity manager. sqlmaint.exe had numerous instances running all night long but the job never completes.
sql server 2000 standard edition sp3a
Windows server 2000
The jobs on this server have run successfully for well over a year and just recently they started hanging. We've done everything short of reboot the server. We've restarted the agent, shut down the sqlmaint.exe but alas nothing we do lets the job complete.
Other jobs that are not back up related are working as they should.
There is plenty of disk space.
Any ideas?
thanks in advance because we are lost as to the cause and resolution.

Hi all,Have a situation that my company has never run across before. Clientis running NT4 for the domain server, using terminal services 2000 andrunning an application with a SQL Server backend and they areexperiencing locking problems. Once one person gets locked out theneveryone trying to access that tables is also locked out as a result. It is not specific to a certain User, or module within theapplication. It's not a specific time of the day (like when a backupwould be running) and sometimes it's in the middle of the night whenthere are actually less Users on the system. We have 500 customers using this application. Most are using SQLServer backend, alot of the newer customers are using TerminalServices, and the number of Users is not accessive as compared to ourother customers. THe only difference is that I do not specificallyknow of another client with an NT4 Domain server in the mix.We actually switched to SQL Server as the recommended back end due tolocking issues using SQLBase because SQL Server is row locking andSQLBase is page locking. Since making this change we have stoppedseeing the locking for years until now. Is this a SQLServer issue orissue with the NT Domain server?Anyone have any ideas???ThanksA

I have a table that is used for reporting, the problem is that the data in the table is refreshed every 30 minutes with a bulk insert. I am trying to find a way to have two tables that are mirror images of each other and when the loading table is loaded, then the table assumes the identity of the reporting table. The basic prinicpal is I need to have the table be available almost all the time and when the bulk insert is happening, users cannot query. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have a SQL 2005 Mobile db merge synching to SQL Server 2005. I've been using this for a few months now and generally it works well (except when adding not null columns with default values, but that's another story...). I just added a new table to the server, went into the publication articles and checked the new table. It told me I would need to generate a new snapshot for the table, so I then generated a new snapshot. Then I synched the mobile db and it worked with no errors, but the new table I added on the server is not on the mobile db (I checked using the Query Analyzer). I have also tried reinitializing subscriptions, but this didn't work either. Any ideas why this table would not be synched to my mobile db (and no error message on mobile device)?
Regards,
Greg

Hi,
I setup transactional replication between 2005-> 2000 database for only one table. It works fine no problem. I checked replication monitor everything works well.
My Subscription was Push Subscription on Publisher.
This morning I restored main database at publication server, I saw all my publication configuration were gone.
I then went to create a publication and push subscription again..and did it, But when I went to replication monitor.
I checked that Snapshot are being created, but from distributor to Subscriber is saying below message?
"The concurrent snapshot for publication is not available because it has not been fully generated.....lONG CHPPPED off meassage"
Can any body tell me hwo to get over this issue?
Many Thanks

Hi There
WHen creating publciations under 2005 i saw a very interesting option under stament delivery, for inserts , updates , deletes there is an option that simply says insert/update/delete statement.
I could find very little in BOL about this under "Article Properties", is this what it soudns like ? FOr example if you say :
update Table set Cloumn = 'whatever', this will not trigger the update sp for each row at the subscriber , will it actually deliver the update statements and literally do the update/insert/delete statement at the subscriber?
Thanx

I have a publication on 2000 machine, replicating by pull subscription to a 2005 machine. I added a table to the Articles in the publication. Reinitialized the subscription, and also restarted both the snapshot and log reader agent. I was kind of assuming the publication would automatically create the table on the subscriber, but after a very long wait it is still not there. Am I missing anything?
PS. Distination Object setting : "Action if name is in use" is set to drop and create new, not that that should make any difference since name is not in use anyway.

I'm a newbie to Replication and recently setup the following.
Publisher and Distributor on the same SQL2005 server, then I've got 7 subscribers(SQL2000 servers) and I'm using push subscriptions. I'm replicating 5 SQl tables which don't have too many changes and these are scheduled to run every 3 hours. In a few days a large one off SQL update with add an additional 10,000 rows to one of the replicated tables. I was wondering what impact this would have on the above setup i.e are there any sort of limitations here. I'm assuming not but thought I would check. I'm thinking it will just cause additional overhead on the server, but the update is being applied when no users will be using the database.
Any feedback greatly appreciated.
Thanks
