Transerfering Development From MS SQL Server Windows2003 Server To SQL Express On A Vista Machine?

Hi all Pros I am transfering from windows2003 server and MS SQL 2000 to Windows Vista and SQL Express ...... Before I allways created a database manually and I could allways use as many databases I needed so in that way I could have several versions of a database for a certain software during development. Can you use separeted databasenames when developing in SQL Express? I am using a dotnetnuke installation file and inside the project there is a file /App_Data/Database.mdf should this file be renamed everytime I make a new testinstallation or setting up a separate dev environment /Johan

I have a PC running the 64 bit version of vista home premium (will be soon upgrading to ultimate).
On the download page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-au/express/bb410792.aspx for SQL Server Express under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 it mentions at the bottom of the page (referred by * & **) that there is a 64 bit install version available for both SQL Server & management Studio.
However, under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2, there is no * or **. As far as I can tell, the Advanced services has Reporting Services as well.
So, what I am wondering is, can I specifically download the 64 bit versions of SQL server express & management studio and as well, download just the reporting services part of Advanced Services?
I have tried this several times and each time get the same result. I even installed Visual Studio 2008 beta 2 - everything but SQL Server Express installed fine. The error I get when running the SQL Server 2005 Express download is (from the log file):

I have no idea what the error is or how to fix it; I've enountered a number of postings related to install errors but none match exactly.

Hi, I need help finding a good back up solution for SQL Server 2005. I am hosting several databases in a shared environment and do not have admin rights to detach & copy & reattach the database file. I can have the hoster back up the file, but that is a manual process and I have had other issues with it in the past (access rights, cost, etc.). I have also tried creating a new business intelligence project, but have found it difficult to do a complete exact copy (while maintaining primary key values) as I run into many concurrency violations. This is especially true in databases that use the standard asp.net membership services tables. Is there a way to get an exact duplicate of the structure & data of a sql server 2005 database without having to create a new Business Intelligence Project? Or is there an easy way to do this within BI that doesn't require a table-by-table setup? The primary purpose of this backup for me is for use on my development machine. Backup for data security/recovery is handled by the ISP. Thanks in advance for your help!
I changed the login password on my computer today, and now I cannot connect to the SQL Server instance I have on that same machine. I am using Windows Authentication. I would think that, if I can log on to my computer, I would be able to connect to the database, since I have been "authenticated" by windows but, that does not appear to be the case. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Hi all! I know I might sound stupid, but I have this problem. I have developed my database on my laptop which does not use Active directory. Lets say I access the database with: SPIDERMANDB1 on SQL server, where the name of my laptop is SPIDERMAN, and the database is DB1. Now, I create an SQL script from sql server and make the necessary changes, like changing the computer name to say, SUPERMAN where my deployment server's name is SUPERMAN. But when I run the SQL script on the SUPERMAN server, it gives me an error like: "User or role SUPERMANDB1 does not exist in this database". I have deployed databases in this way on servers without Acive directory, so I'm sure its not a mistake on my side. So how am I supposed to go around this active directory thingi! Please help me out! I'm counting on u guys!
hi there - I'm praying someone here can shed some light on this - after many google and web searches, I have found users with similar issues, but have yet to find a solution. Problem: I have recently upgraded my desktop from Windows XP to Windows Vista Ultimate (clean install) and have migrated my local machine to SQL Server 2005. However I have a number of .Net projects that access databased on another server running SQL Server 2000 - prior to my upgrade to Vista, I was running SQL Server 2000 on my desktop as well. During the install, everything seemed to go well, and I also installed the SQL Server 2005 Service pack as instructed via the MSDN site. However, when attempting to test my .net projects on my desktop pc (ie visit http://localhost), I encounter the error: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) note that the server I am attempting to connect TO is the old SQL 2000 server - NOT 2005. I specify my connection info in the web.config - and it points to an external ip address on the web. Can anyone shed some light on this? I've tried enabling remote access on my local SQL 2005 install, but I'm fairly sure thats for servers that want to connect to my desktop, rather than my desktop attempting to connect to external servers. I installed sql server 2005 sp2 including business intelligence development suite , however I got a message some client components not compablitable .This morning I searched my programs and found that I have new visual studio 2005 on my computer (before I just had vs 2008) as well as business intelligence developer (which does not work) It seems I I would like to get rid of vs 2005 also fix business intelligence studio . Previously I deleted vs 2005 express off my computer........(I have vista and I would only like to keep tools meant for sql standard 2005 reporting services etc here is a list of my sql sp2 install package By the way I doubled clicked sql_tools.msi and did not run as administrator Does that make a difference? I wonder if this is a problem with vs 2008 and sql 2005......

I must be missing something obvious. I'm not clear on how SQL Express can provide a decent development experience. Consider:
1. I have a class library that includes an express database file, set to always copy to output folder. 2. I have code that attaches to the database in the output folder at runtime.
As a result of the above, the first execution after restarting SQL Server will work. Subsequent builds will fail because SQL Server has a lock on the database file in the output folder. Or one of the two files will be copied (DB and log) and therefore they will be out of sync and detected as corrupt when the code attempts to connect. Either way, I have to restart SQL Server and rebuild before the DB connectivity will work again.
I figured I might need to detach from the DB in my shutdown code, but I cannot execute sp_detach_db from my code because it cannot be done through a connection to the database (database is in use). Moreover, I'm not sure I want to because the user might execute multiple instances of the application.
What am I missing here? Do I need to put steps in my build script to stop and start the local SQL Server instance?
hello, I am working with an instance of SQL Server express. I have to create some reports and understand that I can use BI Developer studio to do this. I went through all of the installs, but BI Developer studio doesn't seem to have installed. I rerun the install program (From the sql express toolkit download on the MS web site). When I choose the option to install the BI Dev Studio, it says that it cannot install b/c it has already been installed on the server.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? I really need to get this up and running to continue with the project.
I am trying to install SQL Server Express - (the non ADV version) and get the following error.
"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli_x64.msi'".
I have 64 bit Vista Ultimate running on an HP dv9000.
I am using the download from the bottom of the download page for SSX where it says 64 bit version.
Prior to this I got the. "64-bit ASP.net is registered. Required 32-bit ASP.NET to install Microsoft Reporting services 2005(32-bit)." messagd during the pre-install scan. From what I gather in the posts, the reporting issue is different from my installation package problem.
I have been trying to prove a point to friends about how far you can go with SSX but am having no luck installing it. This whole process took 1 hour in XP but I've been stymied for 2 days.

I have first installed SQL Server 2005 and after that SQL Express 2005. In machine.config I set the LocalSqlServer, needed for membership and stuff, to my SQL Server (using aspnet_regsql.exe tool). But because I saw some interesting articles with sample code that use .mdf files I also installed SQL Express.But the problem is that every time I want to execute something against .mdf file or want to see the tables in server explorer I get this error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.I also stopped SQL Server process but that didn't do the trick. What do I have to do to get these 2 working on my laptop?
I am having issues with adding a new database in vwd 2008 as i keep getting the error “Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.� I have tried most of the tips on the net already including changing SQLEXPRESS Built-in account to Local System instead of Network Service, running as a administrator and going into surface area to add new admin and adding priveledges to my account. None of these have helped. I can create a database in the management studio but can't create it in vwd and also the asp.net applications doesn't run either. can anyone help as i have no idea what to do.
I tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express on my VISTA Beta 2 Box but before doing so, I checked if IIS is already installed and running. During the assesment of my current configuration, SQL Server 2005 Express is still looking for IIS. Are the conflicts regarding IIS 7.0 to SQL Server Express or the feature is not yet available. I will be continuing to do experiments with this one and hope there will be people who can share their experiences too.
I have been trying to get Visual Basic 2005 Express and Visual Web Developer Express to work with SQL Server 2005 Express. I am using Windows Vista.
I am running VB as an administrator. SQL Server SP2 is installed and working, and I can use SSMSEE to connect to it, create databases etc.
But VB and Web Developer cannot connect to it. Can anyone tell me how to get these products working on Vista (or do they in fact simply not work on Vista)?

I'm just wondering if the MSDE & SQL Server 2005 Express can run on the same machine(winxp) without conflicts. Because I need both the reporting services & the publication functionality of replication.
I know there have been many posts made on this subject; however, despite the resources available, I have not been able to get this to work! I've spent time working on this here and there over the last couple of months only resulting in frustration. I am finally posting to solicit help for my situation to figure out what is wrong with my SQL Server or firewall configuration.
Two machines connected to a router, one wireless, one wired. Both have SQL Server Express and the Management Studio tools installed. From either machine I can connect to its local SQL Server Express instance.
I have enabled Shared Memory, Named Pipes, TCP/IP, and VIA in the SQL Server Configuration Manager. (BTW what is VIA?)
I have added sqlsrvr.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to my Windows Firewall exceptions. I have tried disabling Windows Firewall. One of the machines is configured as DMZ in the router configuration.
Please, someone offer up some brilliant diagnostic steps I am missing to expose what is wrong in my setup and make this work... Thank you!

I have SQL server 7 installed and running ok. Can I install express server? The idea is to have two different databases for different applications, each running in each sql.
ok, today i upgraded to Vista, but i can't create database. create database permission denied in database master. ("Microsoft sql server Error 262") it must be the Vista thing because i don't have any problem with xp. yes, i the patch installed. I use SQl server management studio with Windows Authentication
When I install SQL Express on my XP Machine, the registry keys under local machine (ie, MSSQL.1, etc) show up, but on my Vista 64bit machine, the MSSQL.1 etc keys are not there. SQL Server still works, but the reg keys are missing.

Alright I glanced over the forums to see if there was an answer for this and I didn't see one. I saw a few similar issues however nothing that fixes my issue. Here is my problem.
I installed SQL Server 2005 Express on my Vista partition along with Visual C# Express. For some reason I cannot get the SQL Server 2005 Express to function correctly. Back when installed this on XP it worked flawlessly, and I don't even recall doing anything special...I installed it and it worked. I do know that you have to manually add the user account to the admin list for the SQL server on Vista, and I did that. I chose the option to have it do it during installation as well as through the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration just to be sure.
I am just trying to get the basics of it working right, and that is connecting to the server using C# and filling a dataset...it shouldn't be this hard. This morning when I started with this I could connect and fill my DataSet programmatically however it wouldn't pass the test through the Data Source Configuration Wizard. When I did it manually, as I said it worked and filled the DataSet with the info I asked for below in the code sample. After getting annoyed by it not working through the wizard I decided that maybe I had my permissions wrong and I may have messed up when installing it. So I uninstalled everything to do with SQL Server 2005 and reinstalled it fresh.
This time when I installed it I made sure to set it up to use Windows Authentication. Now it will pass the Test in the Data Source Configuration Wizard and everything is working by doing it that way. However now it doesn't work when I do it manually with the code below(same code as before when it worked...lol). Why doesn't that work yet I can basically ask for the same information and it will work if I do it through the wizard? If it works 1 way I wouldn't think there could be any issues with the server being accessed remotely, right?
Is it possible to install sql express on a 2 cpu Vista pc, even though this is stated to NOT be supported, by assigning CPU affinty, e.g., something similar to c:windowssystem32cmd.exe /C start /afinity 1 notepad.exe?
Hi y'all, I just know that SQL Server Express Edition SP2 is being released by Microsoft recently, and from previous informations I gathered; it seemed that SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is not compatible with Windows Vista (any editions). With the release of SP2, does this mean SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is now compatible with Windows Vista? If so, do I have to install .NET Framework v2.0 first in my Windows Vista Business edition? BecauseI know that Vista Business edition already has .NET Framework v3.0 in it. Thanks for your help!
