Transfer Registered Servers From One SQL Server To Another
May 15, 2006
I have SQL Server 2000 installed on one hard drive. I just installed SQL Server 2000 to another hard drive. I'd like to be able to transfer all the registered servers (including the group they belonged to) to the new SQL Server. Is there an easy way to do this? Otherwise, it seems that I have to go to "Client Network Utility" and register each server again, which are a lot of servers.
On the machine on which I want to put my database, there is already a Registered server called berlinsophos - berlin is the name of the machine and sophos relates to the anti-virus system that has been installed on this computer. I added my database to this server - but on reflection have thought that this might not be best practice since the Sophos so closely tied with computer security. Or perhaps, it was just a name that the person setting up the server gave the name to the first registered SQL Server on the machine.
So I've had some issues upgrading to SQL Server Mgmt Studio Dev from Express. I finally got everything upgraded / installed and I see the instances that I was using with Express in my Registered Servers window but I can't connect to any of them. After looking in my Microsoft SQL Server directory I noticed that there are no MSSQL.# folders. How can I recreate these or create a new instance on my local machine?
Just got a new workstation and installed Enterprise Manager. Is there an easy way to migrate the registered servers from the old workstation to the new one.
I have about 30 servers defined under 6 groups. It would certainly be a lot easier if there was a file I could drag from one workstation to another.
I have 100+ SQL servers registered in SQL EM. Is there a way to migrate these servers to a new PC (registry keys?) or do I have to individually register each one in the new PC? Thanks in advance for any response.
Hello, I want to transfer data in between two or more sql servers. Actually One server is on the web while others are in small networks in diffrent locations. My problem is if the connection goes failed in between process of data transfer then how will it be recovered that how much of data is uploaded and how much is left. Please I need help on this isue. Thanks in advance pronov
I transferred objects of one to the other database from a development server to a production server using Database / Object Transfer tool in SQL Server 6.5. I found some of stored procedures and views didn’t go from the development server to the production server. I am wondering if there is a bug in SQL Server 6.5 (with SP5a) or I did something wrong.
Does someone know what is this problem?
Thanks in advanced,

Not sure thisis the right forum for my question. I have to insert data from one table into another. The problem is that the 2 tables are on different servers and computers for that matter. I only need data that is in one specific table. What is the easiest and most efficient way to do that.
If I access the 2 computers via remote desktop from my computer and actually go and copy the data from the table in computer 1 and paste it inside the table in computer 2 it does paste the data. However, for some reason it doesn't paste all the data. The column datatype is ntext. I mean if the entry is for example 'hello world how are you today? blah bla blah' It will only paste 'hello world how are'
I will appreciate your help.
Many thanks

I've got a quick question here. I'm still quite new to SQL Server. My question is how to transfer file between SQL Servers. For example, i have been working on the database - updating or editing some tables in the SQL Server 2000 at my end. Then, i need to pass whichever tables got updated on to my client who also uses the SQL Server 2000. So we have two separate SQL Servers 2000. i wonder how to transfer data like tables between the two SQL Servers.
my problem is about the slow execution of a query.
I have two database located in two different servers. The servers are linked with the linked server connection made with the enterprice manager.
The databases structure is the same and I copy some data from a database to the other with the following query:
INSERT INTO DATASERVER.RESULTS.dbo.Tab_Tests SELECT * FROM LINESERVER.WIP.dbo.Tab_Tests WHERE ID_Result = '{76271FC1-9470-4EF7-A403-000CF75C2215}' OR ID_Result = '{08C8EEB9-CD22-4CF9-8269-8C1CC58C752B}' OR ID_Result = '{B7B7EED1-36E4-48FA-9636-ABBE62AAE04D}' OR ID_Result = '{8F7BA69E-D2CE-4EB2-BBC4-AFFA165CE0CE}' OR ID_Result = '{273CB805-945F-4EFA-AE20-BC4E0898A19F}'
Everything works till the database grows up more than 400 MB.
Also if I select one result, that consist of some records, the query is very slow and the CPU is working over the 75 %.
I ask you if my working way is corret or if you have some solution or some explanation for me.
Hi, I'm looking for an artical or Someone who can explain me what is the best way to transfer data between two remot database?
I'll Explane: two business have local SqlServer in their office. 1 of business need to get Specific data from other. each database is protected. how can I read ake information of it?
As we all know logins and jobs aren't replicated when using AllwaysOn. What i wanna know is if the "tranfer login taks" will be enough to cover the transfer of logins between servers.
Hello AllI was wondering if there's a way to monitor/measure data-transferbeing taking place between 2 serves in a replicated environment.I cannot see any counters, etc. to monitor this..??thanksSunit
Hello everyone, Here's my situation... I'm running a web service which involves 51 seperate servers and databases. There are fifty licensee servers (One for each US state) and one corporate server. Each night I need to upload sales and membership data from the licensee's databases to the corporate database to compile reports. The application platform I'm using is ASP.NET 2.0 and the the database is SQL2005 express. I want this process to be run automatically, so I believe it's a scheduled windows service I need to setup up in .NET to make the data transfers. If anyone has already set something up like this, or knows the steps to take? I would love to have your input. Thanks in advance, Robert
Hello I have a production database that i need to refresh to our test environment daily. The database size is 700 MB. I do not need to transfer the stored procedures and triggers , users and logins. Would a DTS package that runs every night be the best and the easiest solution to implement or should i look into log shipping and snapshot replication.
Trying to use OPENROWSET in 2005 to pull data from a 2000 server. I have created a linked server named "ABC". But when I execute OPENROWSET I get an error message back: Msg 7403, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The OLE DB provider "ABC" has not been registered. This is not my comfort zone, so any advice on what settings I need to use is appreciated.
Hi all, i encountered this problem.. whenever i tried to create publications it always prompt me this error msg "sql server replications does not support nicknames, such "." or "(local)". i know i need to delete the registration and register a new server with a different name.. i just want to double confirm whether deleting the registration will affect the databases or not ? :
Under sql 2000 I needed to register my sql server before I could begin working with it under Enterprise Manager. Under sql 2005 I usually setup the server under "Object explorer" and work with it from there. So what does registering a server under sql 20005 do? Why is it needed?
SP2 for SQL Server 2005 x64 has been less than happy for me.
The initial problem, mentioned in another thread, concerned SSIS client which stopped liking Data Flow components. It was solved by a removal and reinstallation of the client tools.
However, there now seems to be a problem with making use of the Teradata oledb provider within SSIS. Prior to the installation of SP2 there was no problem.
I create a new SSIS package Add a Data Flow component Within the data flow add an oledb source Create a new connection - using the Teradata oledb provider Test the connection (it works!) Use SQL something like "select * from some_teradata_table_on_the_TD_server" Click on columns, wait a second, a list of columns is returned Add a SQL Server destination (with a new SQL Server connection) Connect the two components Save the package
Click go The TD oledb source component turns bright red and the error is "class not registered"
I have uninstalled the TD oledb provider (and underlying TD components) and re-installed (32-bit and 64-bit) - no change
Eventually with hosting in mind, what are the pros and cons of designing one's backend as a file ( within the Website directory) as compared to creating the database onthe egistered SQL server of the development machine? e.g. If I go thru SQL Server express 2005 and create a new db say MyDb, it creates it on the default SQL server of my machine, (without prompting for the DB files physical location.. I'm sure one would have to search) Is it the same as choosing between MSDE Vs SQL Server 8 in the VS 6.0 era? oris there more than meets the eye? Any known best practices, performance issues etc? Thanks ----------- Too many clicks, spoil the browse -------------
I am attempting to deploy a sample report (SQL 2005 Workgroup w/SP2) and I am receiving the subject error message when I attempt to view the report on the web server. We are using SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition connecting to an Oracle database.
Is this a limitiation of this version? In report designer, I am able to select Oracle as a connection type. If I try to create a data source at the server, "Microsoft SQL Server" is the only option available. If I look at the ReportServer config file, I see many other data connection types available. Did I miss a step, or is this a Workgroup Edition limitation (it's not documented as a limitation that I am able to find)?
I have recently downloaded Orcas beta VS product and had no previous version of VS before. The install went clean and I have been able to generate Window apps and web apps with very little issues; however, I have one issue with running a web app using the "view in browser" option for checking an aspx page for validity. If I use the default Northwind database provided and generate an aspx form using the "DataSet" toolbox widget, the tool prompts for the datasource etc. required to generate the required code. I can select the Northwind database and select the desired columns from one of the tables. Once completed, I build the project (clean build) and then select the "view in browser" option to verify the results. The result is an error page indicating a server error -> Failed to find or load the registered .Net Framework Data Provider.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: Failed to find or load the registered .Net Framework Data Provider.
I created on odbc connection to an iSeries(as400) box and was successfull in displaying the table on the webpage! I looked into the web.config file and it appears that all the required XML data is present. Any help would be appreciated as I am fairly green when it comes the .NET world.
Scenario: I register a remote (across the internet) SQL server in Enterprise Manager with SQL Server authentication using the "sa" account. Does this mean that whenever I connect to it, my "sa" username and password gets sent un-encrypted (cleartext) across the internet?
My guess is, yes, and that the only way to avoid this is to set up a VPN between my local LAN and the remote SQL server.
I am using transfer manager in SQL 6.5 to copy a database and all objects with data to another server. Transfer manager is not recreating all stored procedures. This even happens when I used it to another database on the same server. Any ideas??
Is it possible/advisable when transfering very large amounts of data from server to server to: trasnfer the data to a new table first second alter new table adding indexes, defaults, ets based on original table
if it is what flow item would be used to transfer/alter the indexes and defaults?
I'm very new to ssis so the more detail you can give the better.
I have a report that was designed using SQL Reporting Services that sits on a SQL reporting server. It's nothing too exciting, it is essentially a three page application with legal jumbo on pages 2 and 3 and applicant data in fields on page 1.
We use rectangles to force page breaks to page 2 and to page 3.
When running the report on the report server, it shows and prints fine.
When running the report from the QA website internally, it shows and prints just fine.
When running the report from the production website from a machine internally, it shows and prints just fine.
When running the report from outside of the company network, the report is jacked. It obliterates large chunks of text, crams text together, and creates blank pages.
I need help in determining where I even begin with trouble shooting this!
I have been trying to run transfer manager to transfer all of the data from the production database on one server to a test database on another server(to refresh it). In order to make sure it runs on the server, I have been scheduling it under EM to do so and I am pointing to the log on the destination server on the EM Transfer panel.
For some reason, I am getting the following message in the destination server error log:
99/02/16 10:24:41.42 ods Error : 17824, Severity: 10, State: 0 99/02/16 10:24:41.42 ods Unable to write to ListenOn connection '.pipesqlquery', loginname 'sa', hostname 'TEMP09'. 99/02/16 10:24:41.42 ods OS Error : 232, The pipe is being closed. 99/02/16 10:24:41.42 spid17 Error : 1608, Severity: 21, State: 2 99/02/16 10:24:41.42 spid17 A network error was encountered while sending results to the front end. Check the SQL Server errorlog for more information.
I checked the event viewer error log and see no messages for today.
Can any one advise me what I need to do for this to run successfully?
Thanks. Any information furnished will be greatly appreciated.
can anyone tell me if they know of a way to automate the update process from development servers to live server, with little interference from an administrator
I have a development team that are constantly updating their databases along with their ASP code, and want to publish changes an a weekly basis. They have asked me for a way to take their new structures, tables, procedures etc, and copy them to the live servers, but NOT to interfere with existing customer data.
Funny I know – and I hate the idea btw :(
Any references, contacts, 3rd party tool recommendations welcome,
I am in the middle of a major migraton project, moving from x86 SQL 2000 to IA64 SQL 2005. I have a business need to link to several legacy servers. I have a number of problems I am trying to solve.
1) Linking a Kerberos server to a non-Kerberos server. 2) Linking x64 or IA64 servers to x86 servers. 3) Linking SQL 2005 to SQL 2000.
Two of the errors I am encountering are: ------------------------------ TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Communication link failure". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10054) ------------------------------ And ------------------------------ The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for the linked server "SCDC250DB" reported an error. Authentication failed. Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB". OLE DB provider "SQLCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Invalid authorization specification". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)
If someone has worked through these problems before, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the relevant documentation to resolve these issues.
Thanks!
